Treat every Claude Code response as proposed work, not as an automatic change. Before accepting anything, inspect the affected files, read every command it wants to run, check the permission scope, and test the result in an environment appropriate to the risk. Anthropic’s own security guidance puts responsibility for reviewing suggested code and commands on the user. The workflow below turns that principle into a repeatable review process.
What “review before applying” means
Claude Code can suggest edits, create files, modify configuration, and execute shell commands. A useful response may still contain an incorrect assumption, an unnecessary change, an unsafe default, or a command with a wider effect than the requested task. Approval is therefore a control point: you decide whether the proposed action is in scope, whether its side effects are acceptable, and whether the project is ready for the change.
Review has two separate dimensions:
- Content review: Does the diff implement the intended behavior, and only that behavior?
- Execution review: Are the requested tools and commands allowed to touch the relevant files, network services, credentials, or external systems?
Passing one does not make the other safe. A correct-looking patch can be delivered by a dangerous command, and a harmless command can apply a flawed patch.
Start by defining the change boundary
Give Claude Code a narrowly stated objective before it edits anything. Include the files, module, behavior, or bug that is in scope and identify what must not change. If you are fixing a parser, for example, say whether tests, documentation, generated files, and dependency manifests may be modified. A clear boundary makes the later diff easier to judge.

Ask for an implementation summary first
Before approving edits, ask Claude Code to explain:
- What it plans to change and why.
- Which files it expects to read or modify.
- Which commands or tools it intends to use.
- What assumptions it is making about the project.
- How it will verify the result.
This explanation is a planning aid, not proof that the plan is correct. Compare the stated scope with the actual files and commands presented for approval. If the explanation is vague, ask for a file-by-file plan before allowing an edit.
Set a stopping condition
Decide in advance what requires another review. Examples include a new dependency, a database migration, a change to authentication, access to production credentials, network calls, a modification outside the requested directory, or a test failure. Tell Claude Code to stop and explain when it encounters one of those conditions rather than improvising around it.
Inspect the actual diff, not just the explanation
The diff is the authoritative record of what changed. Review it after each meaningful batch of edits and again at the end. If the project uses Git, these commands provide a straightforward local review:
git status --short
git diff --stat
git diff -- path/to/file
git status --short reveals modified, deleted, and untracked files. The summary shows whether the change is unexpectedly large. A path-limited diff lets you examine one file without losing context in unrelated output. For a complete final review, inspect the full diff and include untracked files separately; an untracked file is not shown by a normal tracked-file diff until it is added or viewed directly.
Check every changed file for scope
- Expected source files: Confirm that the implementation matches the requested behavior and the project’s existing conventions.
- Tests: Check that assertions cover the changed behavior rather than merely being edited to make a failure disappear.
- Configuration: Look for altered ports, permissions, logging, environment selection, feature flags, and security defaults.
- Dependency manifests and lockfiles: Verify that each new or upgraded package is necessary and that the lockfile change corresponds to the intended manifest change.
- Generated or build output: Determine whether it belongs in version control. Unexpected generated artifacts can conceal a much larger change.
- Documentation and comments: Ensure they describe the actual behavior and do not expose credentials, internal endpoints, or misleading instructions.
- Deleted or renamed files: Confirm that references, imports, deployment scripts, and tests were updated deliberately.
Look for changes that are easy to miss
Read the surrounding context, not only the highlighted lines. A one-line permission change may alter an entire deployment. A new fallback may silently disable validation. A broad search-and-replace can modify examples, fixtures, or generated files. Pay special attention to shell scripts, CI workflows, container definitions, infrastructure files, authentication code, serialization, and code that handles user-controlled input.

Search the diff for secrets and unsafe material
Before accepting a change, search modified files for API keys, passwords, private keys, tokens, connection strings, personal data, and internal hostnames. Also check for hard-coded credentials in tests and sample configuration. If a secret appears, do not simply delete the visible value and continue: determine whether it was real, where it may have been copied, and whether it must be revoked or rotated.

Read every proposed command before approving it
Anthropic’s security guidance recommends reviewing suggested commands before permission is granted. Read the complete command, including arguments, redirects, substitutions, pipelines, and environment variables. Do not approve a command merely because its first word looks familiar.
Ask what the command can affect
For each command, identify:
- The files and directories it can read, create, overwrite, or delete.
- Whether it follows symlinks or uses a recursive wildcard.
- Whether it executes code obtained from the network or from an untrusted file.
- Whether it sends data to a remote service or downloads a package.
- Which user, service account, or credentials it runs under.
- Whether it can alter databases, cloud resources, deployments, or other external systems.
- Whether failure could leave a partial migration, half-written file, or locked resource.
Commands that use elevated privileges, recursive deletion, bulk replacement, package installation, database writes, deployment tools, or network access deserve a slower review. If you cannot explain the command’s effect, ask Claude Code to decompose it into smaller, inspectable steps or run it yourself after examining it.
Prefer preview and read-only operations first
Use listing, status, validation, dry-run, and diff modes where the tool supports them. A preview can expose an incorrect path or unexpectedly broad match before a mutating command runs. Separate discovery from modification: first identify the files or records, then approve the operation against that explicit set.
Watch for shell-specific hazards
Quoting and expansion rules can turn a harmless-looking command into a broad operation. Check variables that may be empty, globs that may match more files than expected, command substitutions, redirects such as >, and pipelines that hide an earlier failure. Verify the working directory and the presence of spaces or special characters in paths. A command copied from a different operating system or shell may behave differently than Claude Code expects.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Anthropic’s CLI reference documents permission modes and allow/deny controls, including --allowedTools, --disallowedTools, and --dangerously-skip-permissions. Permission settings determine when Claude Code asks before acting; they do not replace your review of the resulting code.

--disallowedTools |
Block tools that should not be available in a session. | Use it to rule out sensitive capabilities, then still inspect commands from permitted tools. |
| Permission mode selection | Choose how much explicit approval is required for actions. | Use a mode that preserves approval for edits and command execution when you are reviewing unfamiliar work. |
| Batch acceptance | Accept multiple proposed file changes in one action. | Use only after reviewing the complete batch and confirming that every file belongs to the same scope. |
--dangerously-skip-permissions |
Skip permission prompts. | Treat it as a high-risk option. The CLI documentation warns to “use with caution”; do not use it as a convenience on a personal machine or a sensitive checkout. |
Exact menu names, defaults, and behavior can vary by Claude Code release and configuration. Confirm the current CLI reference and the version installed in your environment before relying on a click-by-click instruction. A setting that was available in one release may be renamed, moved, or combined with another control.
Scope approvals to the project
An approval rule should be no broader than the operation needs. Prefer a narrowly identified tool, command pattern, directory, or repository over a blanket permission. Reconsider temporary allowances after the task ends. A rule that was reasonable for a local test may be unsafe when the same session has production credentials or a different working directory.
Do not confuse a prompt with a safety guarantee
A permission prompt tells you that an action is about to occur; it does not certify that the action is correct. Read the proposed command and inspect the diff even when the tool asks for confirmation. Conversely, a denied action may be a useful signal that the requested workflow has reached a boundary that needs human judgment.

Choose an isolation boundary for untrusted work
Permission controls and isolation solve different problems. A permission setting governs what Claude Code may request or execute. Isolation limits what a mistake can reach. Anthropic’s security guidance suggests considering a development container when additional isolation is useful, particularly for untrusted scripts or tool calls.
When a container or separate environment is appropriate
- The repository contains scripts you did not write or cannot fully inspect.
- A dependency’s install or build process executes arbitrary lifecycle scripts.
- The task requires network access that you do not want on your main workstation.
- The project may read environment variables, cloud credentials, SSH keys, or other sensitive files.
- You are evaluating a proof of concept, generated code, or a contribution from an unknown source.
- A failed command could damage the host, neighboring projects, or production systems.
Use an isolation boundary that matches the threat: a development container, disposable virtual machine, separate operating-system account, or a clean checkout with deliberately limited credentials. A container is not automatically secure if it mounts the host filesystem, forwards sensitive sockets, shares credentials, or has unrestricted network access. Review those integrations before starting the session.
Prepare the isolated environment
- Create a disposable checkout or branch so the original working tree remains recoverable.
- Mount only the project data required for the task; avoid broad home-directory or host mounts.
- Provide test credentials or no credentials at all unless the task genuinely requires them.
- Restrict network access where practical, and document any endpoint that must remain reachable.
- Install only the tools and dependencies needed to reproduce the task.
- Record the environment details so a result can be reproduced outside the container if it passes review.
Apply changes in small, reversible batches
Large approvals are difficult to audit. Ask Claude Code to make one conceptual change at a time: implementation, tests, documentation, or refactoring. Review the diff after each batch. If the batch includes unrelated formatting or generated output, ask for it to be separated or explain why it is required.

Keep a recovery path
- Work on a dedicated branch or disposable checkout.
- Commit a known-good starting point before allowing edits, when the project’s workflow permits it.
- Preserve the original diff or patch before accepting a second round of changes.
- Know how to restore a file, reset a branch, or recreate the checkout before running a risky command.
Reversibility is especially important for migrations, code generation, dependency upgrades, and commands that modify files outside the immediate source directory.

Testing is a separate review stage, not evidence that the code is automatically safe. Run the project’s relevant checks after the diff is understood. Start with focused unit or integration tests for the changed behavior, then run broader checks required by the repository, such as type checking, linting, build validation, or packaging.
Interpret a passing result carefully
A passing test demonstrates only what that test exercised. Check whether the changed path is covered, whether the test used production-like configuration, and whether a new branch, error condition, migration, or permission path remains untested. Review test output for warnings, skipped cases, deprecations, and network-dependent behavior.
Handle failures without blindly approving fixes
When a test fails, ask Claude Code to explain the failure before allowing a fix. Compare the proposed fix with the original requirement. A change that weakens an assertion, suppresses an error, disables a check, or changes a timeout may make the suite green while reducing correctness. Keep the failure output, the diagnosis, and the resulting diff connected in your review notes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Perform the final review before commit or merge
After edits and tests, inspect the final state rather than relying on earlier approvals. Run the status and diff checks again, including untracked files. Confirm that temporary debugging code, downloaded artifacts, logs, credentials, and generated files are absent or intentionally handled.
- Compare the final file list with the original change boundary.
- Read the final diff from start to finish, including whitespace-sensitive files and configuration.
- Verify that tests and other checks correspond to the final, not an earlier, version of the files.
- Review any command that still needs to run for packaging, deployment, migration, or publication.
- Confirm that permission allowances and temporary credentials can be removed.
- Commit or merge only when the implementation, execution history, and verification results are understandable to another maintainer.
A practical approval checklist
Use this checklist at each approval point:
- The requested outcome and non-goals are written down.
- Claude Code has identified the files it intends to touch.
- The actual diff contains no unrelated edits, unexpected deletions, or unexplained generated files.
- No secrets, personal data, or internal endpoints were introduced.
- Every command was read in full, with its working directory, arguments, redirects, and side effects understood.
- Network, credential, database, deployment, and elevated-privilege effects are deliberate.
- Permission rules are limited to the current task; broad bypasses are not being used casually.
- Untrusted code is isolated to an environment appropriate to its risk.
- Relevant tests and checks were run, and their output was reviewed rather than assumed.
- The final diff is recoverable and ready for an independent reviewer.
Common failure modes and safer responses
“The summary says only one file changed, but status shows more”
Stop approval. Inspect every extra file, including untracked files. Ask Claude Code why each one exists and revert anything outside the agreed scope before continuing.

“The command is familiar, so I approved it automatically”
Reconstruct its actual effect from the full command and current working directory. If it can write broadly, access credentials, or contact an external service, rerun it only after narrowing the target or moving to an isolated environment.
“The tool wants to skip all permission prompts”
Do not treat skipped prompts as a productivity setting. The --dangerously-skip-permissions option removes an important review point and is explicitly cautioned against in the CLI documentation. Keep interactive approval, or use a disposable environment with deliberately limited access when automation is genuinely necessary.
“The tests pass, but the diff is hard to explain”
Do not merge an opaque change. Break it into smaller conceptual commits or ask for a simpler implementation and a file-by-file explanation. Passing tests cannot establish that unrelated edits are acceptable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“A script needs credentials to run”
Determine exactly which credential, endpoint, and operation are required. Prefer a least-privileged test credential or a mock service. Do not expose a personal token merely to remove an approval obstacle, and rotate any credential that may have appeared in logs or files.
What a safe completion looks like
A change is ready to apply when its scope is explicit, the final diff is understood, every proposed command has an acceptable effect, permissions are appropriately narrow, isolation matches the risk, and relevant checks have been run with their results reviewed. If any of those conditions is unknown, the correct next action is clarification or further inspection—not blind acceptance.
