Windows has more than one place where an AI feature can obtain access. If you are managing an agent in a Windows agent workspace, use Settings > System > AI Components > Agents, select the agent, and review its Files controls. If you mean Copilot PC insights, change its grant in Copilot settings instead. These are separate experiences, not one universal Windows AI-permissions dashboard.
First identify which AI feature requested access
The correct revocation method depends on what you approved. Windows agent-workspace permissions are managed per agent in Windows Settings. Copilot PC insights has its own permission choices inside Copilot. Asking which app or feature displayed the consent request prevents you from changing an unrelated setting.

Neither path should be described as a complete inventory of every permission held by every AI application. Other apps can have their own consent pages, connector settings, or account-level grants.

These steps apply to the agent experience documented under Windows’ experimental agentic features. Microsoft says the feature is currently in preview, and per-agent folder management is available on preview builds 26100.7344 and later. A device that does not expose the menus may not be eligible yet rather than being misconfigured.

1. Confirm that the feature is available
Open Windows Settings and look for the AI Components area. The experimental agentic features setting is a preview feature, so its presence, label, and behavior can change as Microsoft rolls it out. If your build is earlier than 26100.7344, do not expect the documented per-agent folder controls to be present. Feature availability can also depend on the device’s rollout status and administrative policy.
2. Open the per-agent page
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > AI Components > Agents.
- Select the agent whose access you want to inspect.
The list is agent-specific. Selecting one agent does not automatically show or change another agent’s permissions.
3. Inspect the Files section
Open the selected agent’s Files section. The documented controls cover six common folders:

Read the current setting for each folder before changing it. A setting that looks convenient for one task may create standing access that is inappropriate for an agent you rarely use.
4. Choose the least access that still supports the task

Select Ask every time to replace standing access with an explicit decision at each request. Select Never allow to deny requests for the six documented folders. These choices reduce or remove access to those folders; they do not automatically erase other permissions the agent may hold.
5. Review connectors separately
On the individual agent’s settings page, review any enabled connectors. Microsoft’s documentation describes connector enablement separately from the Files setting because a connector may be required for a task but is not the same thing as access to the six known folders. If you revoke folder access while leaving a connector enabled, the connector’s permissions have not necessarily changed. Disable a connector through its own control when it is no longer needed.

6. Use the broader feature switch only when you intend a broad change
For the documented broader folder restriction, Microsoft says to turn off Settings > System > AI Components > Experimental agentic features. This is a feature-level switch, not a narrowly targeted replacement for one folder’s permission. Turning it off can affect the experimental agentic experience more broadly, so use the per-agent Files choices when your goal is to change one agent while leaving the feature available.
Understand what the six-folder setting does not cover
The six folders are a defined convenience boundary, not a promise that an agent can see nothing else. Microsoft notes that agent accounts can also access folders available to all authenticated users, such as public user profiles. Therefore, setting Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos to Never allow should not be presented as a complete file-system isolation mechanism.
Before granting access, consider where the information actually resides. A file in a public profile or another location exposed to all authenticated users may fall outside the six-folder choice. Connector access can also provide a separate route to data. Review both categories when you are trying to reduce an agent’s overall data reach.
Review and revoke Copilot PC insights access
Copilot PC insights is a different permission experience. It asks for permission before accessing relevant PC information and is being gradually rolled out. If you do not see the feature or its access choice, that may simply reflect rollout status.
1. Open Copilot settings
Open Copilot and go to its settings. Microsoft documents the permission choices there, but does not publish a more specific sequence of menu labels in the cited support material. Avoid assuming that the Windows Settings path for agents will control PC insights.

Microsoft says you can change Always allow to Ask every time, or revoke access completely. Choose Ask every time when you want to decide on each request. Choose the revoke option when Copilot should no longer use PC insights access at all.

3. Keep the scope precise
Microsoft’s PC insights description says the feature can answer questions about the PC, the system, and files. It cannot make system changes or monitor the computer in the background. The same support information says PC insights does not access work email, Teams chats, calendar data, or organizational Microsoft 365 documents. Those statements describe the documented scope of PC insights; they do not turn it into a general permission manager for other Copilot capabilities or unrelated applications.
Why general Windows Privacy settings may not show the agent
Windows’ Privacy & security pages include capability controls for listed app permissions. They are useful for capabilities that appear there, but Microsoft says desktop apps may not appear in those lists and are not affected by those controls. An agent or desktop-hosted feature can therefore be absent even when it is functioning normally.
If an agent is missing from a Privacy & security capability page:
- Return to the agent’s own page under Settings > System > AI Components > Agents, if that experience is available.
- Inspect the application or feature’s internal privacy and connector settings.
- Check the feature’s documentation for account-level or service-level grants.
- Do not infer that an absent list entry means the feature has no access or that a global switch has revoked it.
The Windows agent controls and Copilot PC insights controls are the authoritative locations described for those respective experiences; the generic capability pages are not a universal substitute.
Troubleshoot common permission problems
The AI Components or Agents page is missing
First check the Windows edition and build information in Settings > System > About. The documented per-agent folder controls require preview build 26100.7344 or later, and the experimental agentic features setting is currently in preview. A missing page can therefore indicate that the feature has not reached your device, your build is not eligible, or an organization policy has withheld it. Do not transplant this Windows 11 path to Windows 10.
The agent still asks for a connector after folder access is denied
Folder permission and connector enablement are separate controls. Review the selected agent’s connector list and disable the connector you no longer want enabled. Denying the six known folders does not, by itself, revoke a connector’s access.

An agent can still reach a location after the six folders are denied
Check whether the location is available to all authenticated users, such as a public user profile, or is exposed through an enabled connector. The six-folder control is limited to the named folders and is not a complete boundary for every possible file location.

Copilot PC insights is not visible
Microsoft describes PC insights as gradually rolling out. If it does not appear in Copilot settings, the feature may not yet be enabled for your account or device. There is no documented Windows Settings path that can be substituted for the Copilot control.
A UAC prompt appears while an agent is working
User Account Control (UAC) is a separate security mechanism. A UAC prompt concerns an attempted administrator-level change; it is not a report of which files, folders, or connectors an agent can read. Approving or denying UAC does not replace reviewing the agent’s Files and connector settings.
You are using Windows 10
Microsoft provides general app-privacy guidance for Windows 10, but the Windows 11 agent-workspace path should not be copied to it. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If a feature is not documented for your Windows 10 installation, use the application’s own controls and current Microsoft support guidance rather than assuming the Windows 11 menus exist.

Permission review matters because an agent does more than display a static answer: it may interpret documents, interact with connected services, and request actions on your behalf. Microsoft warns that agentic apps can face cross-prompt injection, in which malicious content in a user-interface element or document attempts to override the agent’s instructions and trigger unintended actions. Limiting the data an agent can read, requiring a prompt for each request, and disabling unused connectors reduce the opportunity for an unexpected instruction to influence work.
Microsoft states the following design principle in its Experimental Agentic Features support documentation: “Agents should always act under the principles of least privilege and must not be granted permissions or capabilities exceeding that of the initiating user, including administrative rights.” This is a stated principle, not a guarantee that every implementation currently achieves perfect isolation. Treat it as a reason to inspect grants rather than as a substitute for inspection.

- Prefer Ask every time when a task is occasional or the files are sensitive.
- Use Never allow for the six folders when the agent has no legitimate need to read them.
- Enable connectors only for the agent and task that require them.
- Turn off the experimental agentic feature when you want a broader stop rather than a per-agent adjustment.
- Revisit settings after a feature update because preview labels and availability can change.
A practical decision path
- Identify the requester. Was the prompt from an agent listed in Windows’ AI Components area, or from Copilot PC insights?
- Use the matching settings surface. Choose Windows Settings for an agent workspace; choose Copilot settings for PC insights.
- Replace standing access where possible. Select Ask every time when you still need occasional access but do not want silent reuse.
- Deny what is unnecessary. Select Never allow for the six known folders or revoke PC insights completely when the feature should not access the data.
- Check independent routes. Review connectors, public or shared folders, and application-specific permissions.
- Escalate only the right problem. A UAC prompt calls for an administrator-action decision; a missing preview menu calls for an availability or policy check.
Frequently asked questions
Does denying the six folders block every file an agent could access?
No. The control covers Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Music, Pictures, and Videos. Folders available to all authenticated users, including public user profiles, and separately enabled connectors are outside that narrow list.
Can I use UAC to revoke an agent’s file permission?
No. UAC governs administrator-level changes. Use the agent’s Files settings, connector controls, or Copilot’s PC insights settings for data-access decisions.
Why does Microsoft call the agentic feature experimental?
The support page states that the experimental agentic features setting is currently in preview. That status explains why a device may lack the menu and why labels or eligibility can change.
