Review your Google Account’s linked-apps page, identify what each connection can access, and remove only the permission you no longer trust or need. Google separates connections into Sign in with Google, third-party access to account data, and linked accounts; each has different consequences when removed.

Revoking access blocks future use of the connection, but it does not necessarily delete information an app already copied. If you see other signs that someone accessed your account, change your Google Account password immediately and run Security Checkup.

What “third-party access” can mean

Google uses several connection types for relationships between your account and an outside app or service. They can look similar in a list, but they do not grant the same authority or respond the same way when you remove them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Connection type What is connected What removal does What removal does not guarantee
Sign in with Google Your Google Account is used to sign in to the other app. Stops the automatic Google sign-in link. It does not delete the account or data held by the other app.
Third-party access to Google Account data The app receives the specific Google data or service permissions shown during authorization. Prevents the app from obtaining that authorized access in the future. It may not erase copies the developer already made.
Linked account Google and an account at another service are connected so a feature can work across them. Breaks the link. Features that depend on the link may stop working; the other account is not deleted.

When investigating an unfamiliar entry, first determine which row describes it. “Remove access” is the appropriate control for data permissions, while a sign-in or linked-account connection has its own removal action. Treating every entry as if it were the same can either leave a permission in place or disable a feature you still need.

A useful comparison is to ask who is accessing whose information. With data access, an outside app is asking Google for the products or information named on the authorization screen. With Sign in with Google, Google is primarily proving your identity to the other service. With a linked account, the relationship is reciprocal in the sense that Google and the other service coordinate a feature. The details page, not the app’s logo or name, tells you which situation applies.

Prepare for a safe review

  • Use the correct Google Account. Sign in to the account that may have granted the permission. If you use several Google Accounts, check the profile indicator before reviewing the list.
  • Have the service context in mind. An app may be familiar because you used it once, because its developer changed its name, or because another person set it up with your permission. Do not remove every entry you do not immediately recognize; inspect its details first.
  • Expect the interface to vary. Google’s labels and filter presentation can change by account, device, or interface update. Look for the current linked-apps or connected-apps page in your Google Account settings and use the labels shown there.
  • Never provide your Google password to an outside app. Google Account Help states: “Do not share your Google Account password on a third-party app.” A legitimate connection uses Google’s authorization screen rather than asking an app to collect the password directly.

Review from a device and browser you normally trust. If you are already locked out, or if the page shows that your recovery details changed, handle account recovery and password security first. The linked-apps review is most useful once you can reliably sign in to the affected account.

How to review connected apps and services

  1. Sign in to the account you want to inspect. Confirm the account name or profile picture, especially if your browser keeps multiple sessions.
  2. Open the Google Account linked-apps page. This is the Google settings page that lists apps and services connected to the account. The exact navigation labels may change, so use Google Account settings or Google’s current help instructions to reach the page.
  3. Use the available filters. Separate Sign in with Google connections from third-party access to data and linked-account connections. Filtering prevents you from applying the wrong removal procedure.
  4. Select an entry you do not recognize or no longer need. Open its details rather than relying only on the app name or icon.
  5. Read the access description. Note the Google products named, the categories of information involved, and whether the app can view or copy information or manage data. Google says an app is limited to the data and services you authorize, so the displayed permissions are the scope to evaluate.
  6. Decide whether the connection is legitimate and still necessary. Consider when you used the service, which feature required the connection, and whether you still trust the developer. An old connection that you no longer use is a reasonable candidate for removal even if it was originally legitimate.
  7. Repeat the inspection for other entries. Work through each suspicious or unnecessary connection individually so you can predict the effect of each removal.

Take note of the Google products listed before you act. A request involving a basic profile may serve a different purpose from one that can view or copy information, and management access can permit the app to administer data. Google’s guidance is to grant access only to third parties you trust. If an entry’s purpose is unclear, pause and verify it through the service’s own account or privacy documentation rather than guessing.

Remove third-party access to Google Account data

Use this procedure when the details identify permissions to Google Account data or services rather than only a sign-in link.

  1. Open the app’s details from the linked-apps list.
  2. Choose See details if that option is shown.
  3. Review the named Google products and permission scope one more time.
  4. Select Remove access.
  5. Confirm the removal when Google asks.

After confirmation, the app should no longer be able to use that authorization for future access. If the service later needs Google data, it must ask you to authorize a new connection. Do not assume that the removal also closes your account with the service or deletes information that service already received.

Removal is specific to the connection you selected. If the same provider appears under more than one connection type, inspect each listing separately. Revoking data access does not automatically remove a separate Sign in with Google relationship, and breaking a linked account does not necessarily revoke an independent data permission.

Remove a Sign in with Google connection

A Sign in with Google connection is primarily an authentication link. Removing it stops the automatic sign-in relationship; it is not the same as deleting the account you created at the outside service.

  1. Filter the linked-apps page to Sign in with Google connections.
  2. Open the entry and read the service details to verify that it is the account you intend to disconnect.
  3. Use the page’s control to stop or remove the Sign in with Google connection.
  4. Before removing it, make sure you know another way to sign in to the outside service if you plan to keep using it. The service may require you to establish a separate sign-in method through its own account settings.

Removing this link does not delete data held by the service. If you want that data removed, use the service’s deletion process or contact its developer separately. If you have no alternate sign-in method and remove the link, you may need the service’s recovery process to regain access.

Remove a linked-account connection

A linked account connects Google with an account at another service so that a feature can operate across both accounts. The details should identify the linked-account relationship and the feature that depends on it.

  1. Filter the list to linked accounts, then select the connection you are evaluating.
  2. Read which accounts are linked and what feature or exchange the link supports.
  3. Choose the control to remove or delete the link and confirm.
  4. Test the related feature only if you still need it. If it stops working, decide whether restoring the connection is worth the access it requires.

Deleting a link does not delete either account. It can, however, disable functions that rely on the relationship, so record the affected feature before confirming if it is important to you.

What happens to data after you revoke access

Revocation changes what the app can do going forward; it is not a guaranteed wipe of the past. An app may have viewed, copied, or stored information while its permission was active. Google’s guidance distinguishes stopping future access from deleting data already held by a developer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the app and the permission you removed. This gives you a clear reference if you need to contact the developer.
  2. Contact the developer and request deletion. Explain which account or data you want deleted and follow the service’s privacy or account-deletion procedure.
  3. Check the service’s own account controls. Removing Google access does not necessarily cancel a subscription, close the outside account, or remove files stored there.
  4. Watch for a new authorization request. If the app asks to reconnect, read the new scope carefully rather than approving automatically.

Ask the developer what information it retained, where it is stored, and whether copies shared with other providers are covered by the deletion request. The Google setting can stop new access, but only the developer can explain or delete data already in its systems.

When an unfamiliar app may indicate account compromise

An unknown connection is not proof that someone took over your account, but it is a setting Google tells users to review when investigating suspicious activity. Look for other signs, such as an unexpected password change, unfamiliar devices, or activity you do not recognize.

Change the Google Account password first

If you think another person is signed in, Google advises changing the Google Account password immediately. Use a new password that you have not used elsewhere. Then change reused passwords on apps and websites that shared the old password; revoking a Google connection does not protect those separate accounts.

Review unfamiliar apps and devices

Return to the linked-apps page and remove connections you cannot verify or no longer need. Also review the devices and sessions shown in your Google Account security settings. Sign out or secure anything you do not recognize, following Google’s current account-security prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Security Checkup

Security Checkup provides personalized recommendations, including a review of apps that can use your account information. Google Account Help summarizes the purpose plainly: “To better protect sensitive information, review which apps can use your account info and remove the ones you don’t need.” Follow the recommendations that apply to your account rather than treating the checkup as a substitute for reading each permission.

A practical decision test for each connection

Use these questions in order when an entry looks suspicious or unnecessary:

  1. Do I recognize the service? Check the name, the account context, and the feature for which you might have authorized it.
  2. Which connection type is it? Identify Sign in with Google, data access, or a linked account before selecting a removal control.
  3. What exactly can it access? Read the Google products and permission category shown in the details. Distinguish viewing or copying from managing data.
  4. Do I still need the feature? If not, removal usually reduces the account’s active connections. If yes, consider whether the developer is trusted and whether the scope is appropriate.
  5. What will stop when I remove it? Automatic sign-in may stop, a cross-service feature may be disabled, or the app may lose future data access.
  6. Could the app already hold copies? If so, plan to request deletion from the developer after revoking access.

Common situations and the right response

You recognize the app but no longer use it

Open the details, verify that it is an old authorization, and remove the connection type that is no longer needed. If the app stored information independently, use its own deletion controls as well.

The name is unfamiliar, but the permission is narrow

Do not approve or remove based only on the name. Inspect the details, identify the Google products involved, and check whether another service or account in your household used it. Remove it if you cannot establish a trusted purpose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The app requests management access

Management permissions deserve closer scrutiny than a basic profile request because they may allow the app to change or administer data. Confirm that the feature genuinely requires that scope and that you trust the developer. If not, remove the data-access connection and consider contacting the developer about information already copied.

A feature breaks after you remove a link

This is an expected consequence for some linked-account connections. Decide whether the feature is essential and whether you are comfortable restoring the link. If you reconnect, read the authorization screen and grant only the scope you understand.

You removed access but still see the outside account

Revocation affects the Google connection, not the third-party account itself. Use the outside service’s account or privacy controls if you want to close that account or delete its stored data.

The same company appears more than once

Do not assume duplicate-looking entries are redundant. One may be a sign-in link while another is a data permission or linked account. Open each entry, compare the access scope and feature, and remove only the connection you no longer want.

Optional stronger protection for people at high risk

Google’s Advanced Protection program is aimed at people at high risk of targeted online attacks. It limits third-party app access and requires sign-in with a passkey or security key. Google says the program is free, although you may need to purchase a security key if you choose that sign-in method.

Advanced Protection is not required to inspect or revoke app connections. The linked-apps page is where you review and remove access; a passkey or security key does not identify which apps are connected. Consider the program only if its stronger sign-in and app-access restrictions fit your threat model.

Final checklist

  • Verify the Google Account you are reviewing.
  • Open the current linked-apps page and separate the connection types with its filters.
  • Inspect each app’s named products and permission scope.
  • Remove data access with See details → Remove access → Confirm.
  • Use the appropriate control for Sign in with Google or a linked account.
  • Expect future access to stop, but do not assume previously copied data is erased.
  • Ask the developer to delete data that may already be stored.
  • If compromise is possible, change the Google Account password immediately, change reused passwords, review devices, and run Security Checkup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove third-party access to my Google Account?

Sign in to the correct Google Account, open its linked-apps page, select the app, choose See details, select Remove access, and confirm. If the entry is a Sign in with Google or linked-account connection, use that connection’s removal control instead.

How do I know which apps have access to my Google Account data?

Open the linked-apps page and inspect each listing’s details. The page identifies the Google products and permission categories, including whether the app can view or copy information or manage data. Use the filters to separate data access from sign-in and linked-account connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does removing an app’s access delete my account with that app?

No. Revoking Google access stops the connection, but it does not delete the third-party account, cancel a subscription, or erase data the service already holds. Use the service’s own account or privacy process for those requests.

Can an app still have my data after I remove access?

Yes. Removal blocks future use of the authorization, but the developer may have copied or stored information while access was active. Contact the developer and request deletion of the data already held.

What should I do if I do not recognize a connected app?

Inspect its details and connection type before acting. If you cannot establish a trusted purpose, remove the relevant connection. If you also see unfamiliar devices, password changes, or other suspicious activity, change your Google Account password immediately, change reused passwords, review devices, and run Security Checkup.

Will removing Sign in with Google stop me from using the outside service?

It stops the automatic Google sign-in link, but it does not delete the outside account. If you plan to keep using the service, establish another sign-in method through that service before or after removing the link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when I delete a linked-account connection?

The link between Google and the other service is broken. Accounts are not deleted, but features that depend on the link may stop working. Read the details and note the affected feature before confirming.

Do I need a security key to remove third-party access?

No. Review and removal are completed in Google Account settings. Advanced Protection is an optional program for people at high risk of targeted attacks; it limits third-party app access and can use a passkey or security key, but the hardware is not required for routine app review.

The Bottom Line

Review each Google Account connection by type and permission, then remove only the link you no longer trust or need. Data-access revocation stops future access; it does not promise deletion of copies already held by the developer. If the unfamiliar connection is accompanied by other warning signs, change your password immediately, review devices and reused passwords, and run Security Checkup.
