To see what an AI tool can do with Gmail, sign in to the Google Account that contains the mailbox, open its linked-apps or third-party-access settings, select the tool, and read See details. Remove access when the connection is no longer needed. If Gemini or another Google AI agent can use the connection, stop that agent separately. Revoking authorization blocks future access through that connection, but it does not automatically erase data the service already copied.
What a connected AI tool can access
Connecting an AI service to Google does not give every service the same Gmail capability. The authorization screen and the connection’s details identify the Google product involved and the level of access requested. A tool might be able to inspect message contents, see only mailbox metadata, send mail as you, change message state, or permanently delete mail. Those are materially different risks.
Access is tied to a particular Google Account. If you use more than one account in the same browser, review the account that actually contains the Gmail inbox you want to protect. Checking the wrong account can make a connection appear to be missing or lead you to revoke a harmless connection while leaving the mailbox you meant to review exposed.
“AI access” is therefore not a single permission. A summarizer, an automatic reply assistant and an agent that organizes your inbox may need very different scopes. The safest starting point is to identify the exact feature you intend to use, then ask whether every requested capability is necessary for that feature.

Gmail permission scopes explained
Google’s Gmail API documentation describes scopes that map to different capabilities. The scope name is useful, but always read the complete permission description shown for the app.

Google groups Gmail API scopes as non-sensitive, sensitive or restricted. That classification mainly affects an app’s verification obligations. It does not prove that a developer is trustworthy, nor does it show whether the requested access is appropriate for the feature you want to use.
A metadata-only scope is not the same as no access. Even without message bodies, a service may learn how much mail you receive, which labels are used and information contained in headers. Conversely, a send-only scope does not authorize the provider to search old mail merely because the provider offers an AI chat interface. Judge the actual scope, not the marketing description.

How to see which apps have access to your Gmail
Google periodically changes the wording and layout of Account settings. Look for the linked-apps, third-party access or connections area rather than relying on one exact menu label.
- Sign in to the correct Google Account. Use the account that owns the Gmail mailbox you are checking. If several accounts are open, confirm the profile or account selector before changing anything.
- Open Google Account settings. Go to the area that lists linked apps, third-party apps and services, or your connections to third parties. Google may offer filters for access to a particular Google product or for other types of account access.
- Find the AI tool by name. An integration can be listed under the service’s developer or product name rather than the name you use in its chat interface. If you do not recognize a listing, do not approve it merely because the name looks familiar; open its details first.
- Select the connection and choose See details. Read the Google product named, the account involved and every permission description. Note whether the app can read bodies, view metadata, send, compose, modify or permanently delete mail.
- Match the access to the feature. A feature that sends a one-time confirmation message may not need permission to read every message. A tool that summarizes selected mail may need message-reading access, but a metadata-only connection will not provide the bodies required for that summary.
- Check for separate agent access. If the listing appears under an Agent access filter, it may be usable by Gemini or another Google AI agent in addition to the ordinary linked-app authorization. Record that status before deciding what to stop.
- Repeat the check for other accounts. Authorizations are account-specific. If you have personal, work or school Google Accounts, inspect each one that might have been connected to the AI service.
If an app is not easy to identify, compare its developer name, logo and support details with the provider’s official site. A familiar consumer-facing name can conceal a separate integration operated by another company. Do not reconnect an unknown entry simply to see what it does.
How to remove an AI app’s Google Account access
- Open the connection’s details in the linked-apps or third-party-access area.
- Select Remove access and confirm the warning.
- Return to the connections list and verify that the app no longer has the authorization, or that its status shows access has ended.
- Test any workflow that depended on Gmail. Removing access can disable importing, searching, drafting, sending or other features that require the connection.
Removal stops the app from making new requests through that Google authorization. It does not necessarily close your separate account with the AI provider, delete conversations stored there, or remove copies of Gmail data the provider already received. For those matters, use the provider’s privacy policy, data controls or deletion-request process.
Removing access is also different from deleting the app from your phone or browser. Uninstalling a client may leave the Google authorization active, while revoking authorization may leave a separate provider account and its stored history intact. Treat the Google connection and the service account as two separate cleanup tasks.

How to stop Gemini or another AI agent from using a linked app
Google documents agent access as a separate control. An agent can be allowed to interact with a linked app even when you have not changed the app’s underlying Google Account connection.

- Open the Google Account connections or linked-apps area while signed in to the relevant account.
- Use the Agent access filter, if it is available.
- Select the app whose agent access you want to change.
- Choose Stop using for the relevant Gemini or AI agent and confirm.
Stop using ends that agent’s use of the linked app; it does not itself remove the app’s Google Account authorization. If you no longer trust the service at all, perform both actions: stop agent use and remove the underlying app access.
This distinction matters when you want to keep a narrowly defined app feature but do not want an AI assistant to invoke it automatically. After stopping the agent, revisit the ordinary app entry and confirm that its remaining scope still matches the feature you intend to keep.
Revoking access is not the same as deleting your data
Google’s control governs access through the authorization you revoke. A service may already have copied messages, attachments, headers or account data to its own servers while the connection was active. Google cannot control how that third party stores, exposes, retains or deletes those copies.
After revocation, check the AI provider’s privacy policy and account settings for:
- Conversation or mailbox-import deletion controls.
- Retention periods and whether deleted data remains in backups for a stated interval.
- Options to delete an integration’s stored index, uploaded files or message cache.
- Whether personnel, contractors or subprocessors can access submitted content.
- Procedures for closing the provider account or submitting a formal deletion request.
Describe the data precisely when contacting the provider: for example, imported Gmail messages, message headers, attachments, generated drafts or an account identifier. Keep a copy of the request and any confirmation. If the provider’s policy does not explain retention or deletion, ask for that information before reconnecting the mailbox.
Deleting a conversation in an AI interface may not delete an underlying mailbox index or a copy held in a backup. Ask whether the provider’s deletion control covers imported Gmail data, embeddings, generated drafts and support logs, rather than assuming that one “delete chat” button covers every copy.
How to decide whether a permission is justified
Use the narrowest access that can perform the job. Evaluate the connection on five separate dimensions instead of treating “AI access” as one category.

Pause when an app asks for a broader scope than its stated feature needs. Ask the provider why the broader scope is required, whether a narrower scope is available, how long data is retained and how to delete it. Do not accept a broad request simply because the authorization dialog is familiar or the app is popular.

For a sending feature, compare the request specifically with gmail.send. For a message-summary feature, determine whether full message reading is necessary and whether the service can limit processing to messages you select. For mailbox-management automation, ask why modifying messages is needed and whether permanent deletion is part of the workflow. These questions turn a vague privacy concern into a concrete scope review.
Unverified apps and authorization warnings
An “unverified” label means Google has not completed the verification associated with that app’s requested access. Google notes that an app may be unverified because it is still in development or limited to an organization. The label alone does not establish that the app is malicious, but it is a reason to verify the developer, the feature and the necessity of the requested scope before proceeding.
- Confirm that you reached the authorization page from the provider’s genuine domain and expected workflow.
- Check the developer name and support contact against information you already trust.
- Read every requested Gmail permission instead of approving the screen automatically.
- Stop if the app’s explanation does not match its requested ability to read, send, modify or delete mail.
If the app is used by a work or school organization, ask the administrator which integration is approved and what retention rules apply. An organizational restriction can explain an unverified warning, but it does not remove your need to understand what data leaves Google.

Use Google’s authorization flow, where the account and requested scopes are displayed, rather than typing your Google password into a third-party app. Google’s direct instruction is: “Do not share your Google Account password on a third-party app or service.”
Password sharing bypasses the permission review and makes it harder to revoke one service without changing credentials everywhere. If you have already entered a password into a third-party page, change the Google password from Google’s own account settings, review recent security activity, remove unfamiliar connections and enable or verify two-step verification.
Do you need to buy a security product?
No physical product or paid privacy utility is required to inspect or revoke Gmail permissions. The relevant controls are part of Google Account settings, and a generic security application cannot substitute for reading the scopes or requesting deletion from the AI provider.
You may choose a paid service for unrelated needs, but do not let an upsell distract from the basic review. First identify the connected account, inspect the permission description, stop agent access if necessary and remove the authorization. Those steps address the Gmail connection directly without adding another service that may itself request account access.

The app is not listed
First confirm the Google Account and look for the provider’s developer name or an alternate product name. Some tools use more than one connection, so inspect other relevant entries and product filters. If the service can still access Gmail but no authorization appears, stop using its integration and contact the provider; do not grant a new connection just to make the listing easier to find.

The app is listed, but the permission description is unclear
Do not infer capability from the app name. Open the full details and compare the wording with the Gmail scope capabilities above. Ask the provider for a plain-language explanation and a narrower option. An unclear description is a reason to delay approval, not a reason to assume the least dangerous interpretation.
You removed access, but the AI still shows old emails
Revocation blocks future access through Google’s authorization; it does not erase data already imported. Use the provider’s deletion controls or submit a deletion request that identifies the Gmail data. Also check whether the old material is merely a locally stored conversation or export that you downloaded yourself.
You want to keep the app but prevent agent use
Use the Agent access filter and choose Stop using for the relevant agent. Leave the ordinary app authorization in place only if the app’s own feature still needs it and the scope remains acceptable.
The app needs to send mail but asks for full mailbox access
Compare the request with gmail.send. Ask why send-only access is insufficient and whether the feature can work without reading or modifying existing messages. Do not approve gmail.modify or mail.google.com merely for convenience when the stated task is sending.
You removed access by mistake
Reconnect only from the provider’s expected workflow and review every permission again. Removal may have disabled a feature, but it did not require you to restore the broadest prior scope. Choose a narrower authorization if the provider offers one.

Permission review works best as a recurring account-hygiene task rather than a one-time cleanup.
- Review linked apps after installing a new AI integration or enabling a Gmail feature.
- Remove connections you no longer recognize, use or need.
- Recheck permissions when an app adds a new feature or changes its privacy terms.
- Review both ordinary app access and Agent access; they are separate controls.
- Keep high-privilege scopes such as
mail.google.comfor cases that genuinely require permanent deletion. - Maintain a record of providers that received mailbox data and the deletion method each provider offers.
Bottom line
Open the linked-apps page for the Google Account that holds your Gmail, inspect the app’s detailed scopes, and compare them with the feature you intended to use. Remove the app’s access when it is unnecessary, and stop Gemini or another AI agent separately when agent access is enabled. Choose the narrowest permission that works, never share your Google password, and contact the provider directly to delete data that was already copied.

Can ChatGPT or another AI tool read my Gmail?
Only if you authorized a connection with a scope that allows reading. gmail.readonly can expose message contents, while gmail.metadata exposes headers and labels but not message bodies. A send-only authorization does not by itself permit reading mail.

How do I see which apps have access to my Gmail?
Sign in to the Google Account that contains the mailbox, open Google Account settings, go to the linked-apps or third-party-access area, select the app and choose See details. Check each Google Account separately if you use more than one.
Does removing Google Account access delete the Gmail data an AI service already copied?
No. Removing access stops future requests through that authorization, but the provider may retain imported messages, attachments, headers, indexes or conversations. Use the provider’s privacy policy and deletion controls, or contact it with a specific deletion request.
What is the difference between Remove access and Stop using?
Remove access ends the app’s Google Account authorization. Stop using ends Gemini or another Google AI agent’s use of a linked app. They are separate controls, so use both when you want to disconnect the service completely.
Is gmail.metadata safe?
It is narrower than full message reading because it does not include message bodies, but it can still reveal labels, headers and patterns of mail activity. Decide whether that information is appropriate for the feature and the provider’s retention practices.
Why does Google show an unverified-app warning?
Google says an app may be unverified because it is in development or restricted to an organization. The warning alone does not prove malicious behavior, but you should verify the developer, the feature and the necessity of every requested permission before continuing.
Do I need to pay for a privacy or security product to revoke Gmail access?
No. Google Account controls let you inspect and revoke connected-app permissions without buying another product. A generic privacy tool cannot replace reviewing the actual Gmail scopes or requesting deletion from the AI provider.
What should I do if I gave an AI service my Google password?
Change the password using Google’s own account settings, review recent security activity, remove unfamiliar connections and enable or verify two-step verification. Going forward, use Google’s authorization screen instead of entering the password into a third-party service.
