To limit when your teen can use ChatGPT, link your accounts and set Quiet hours in Settings > Parental controls. You can also manage selected features and schedules, but linked parental controls do not let you read your teen’s conversations or see their activity in real time. Study hours are different: they start eligible new chats in study mode rather than blocking access.
Link your account to your teen’s
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Add family member and invite your teen by phone or email. Your teen must accept the invitation. Alternatively, your teen can invite you from their own Parental controls settings.
- After linking, select your teen under Family members to review or change the settings available for their account.
Before changing anything, discuss what you plan to adjust and why. Linking accounts gives you access to supported settings, not to your teen’s chats.
Choose a control that matches your goal

OpenAI’s parental controls guide describes the available controls and their behavior. Options and defaults can vary by setting or account. For example, OpenAI lists Study mode as disabled by default; Quiet hours and Study hours are disabled until scheduled. Check the settings displayed for your teen’s account rather than assuming every option is available.

- Go to Settings > Parental controls and select your teen under Family members.
- Choose Quiet hours to restrict use, or Study hours to schedule study-mode starts for eligible new chats.
- Set the start and end times. Add additional blocks if needed, then review the displayed settings.
Some changes may not take effect immediately, and settings that apply only to new conversations may leave existing conversations under their previous settings. OpenAI advises checking the displayed settings after making a change.

Understand feature-specific controls
Turning off a supported setting can hide or block its related feature; turning it on makes that feature available while other safety protections continue to apply. The Study mode switch changes how eligible new main-experience conversations start; it is not an access restriction. Study hours likewise do not block ChatGPT use.
Some ChatGPT Work controls have a narrow scope. Disabling Codex network access concerns code run by ChatGPT Work connecting to online services, while disabling Cloud browser concerns ChatGPT Work’s built-in browser. These switches do not control ChatGPT search, plugins, or connectors.

What parents can and cannot see
Linked parental controls do not provide access to a teen’s chat history, conversation contents, or real-time activity. In limited situations, OpenAI may send a safety notification with a brief description of the concern, any related account action, and support information; it does not include chat transcripts. Notifications are enabled by default after linking, may take a few hours to begin, and their delivery channels can depend on the contact information and preferences configured.

Either the parent or teen can unlink the accounts at any time. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and loses the ability to manage settings and receive safety notifications for that account.

What teen protections do—and do not—promise
OpenAI says ChatGPT for Teens is automatically enabled for eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18. It includes age-appropriate safeguards and learning-oriented features, as well as reminders that may encourage breaks.
The Reduce sensitive content setting addresses categories including graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay, extreme beauty ideals, and unhealthy dieting. OpenAI says the safeguard lowers the chance of certain responses; it does not guarantee that every response will be appropriate. Treat it as an added safeguard, not as a substitute for talking with your teen about their use of ChatGPT. See OpenAI’s pages on ChatGPT for Teens and reducing sensitive content for details.

What changes when your teen turns 18
When ChatGPT identifies a linked teen account as belonging to someone 18 or older, it may transition out of the ChatGPT for Teens experience. In that transition, teen protections and parental controls are turned off, the link ends, and teen safety notifications stop; the account holder controls their settings. OpenAI describes the automatic transition as rolling out to eligible accounts, so timing may not be identical for every user.
The account holder can review the age category under Settings > Account. Only the account holder can complete age verification. They may be able to link with a parent again later, but must accept the parent’s invitation. OpenAI explains the transition in What changes when a ChatGPT user turns 18.
