Open About You from your Amazon profile to see the personal details Amazon uses for personalization. You can correct a detail, provide feedback, or remove a detail you do not want used. That is only one layer of Amazon’s recommendation system, however. To correct a specific product signal, also review Improve Your Recommendations and Your Browsing History. Alexa recordings, transcripts, and typed requests have a separate privacy screen.
The practical way to regain control is to review each signal in the place where it is stored: profile details in About You, individual products in recommendation controls, viewed products in browsing history, Alexa interactions in Alexa Privacy, and advertising choices in advertising preferences. Changing one setting does not erase every other activity record or guarantee that every recommendation changes immediately.
What Amazon may be using to personalize your experience
Amazon describes personalization as drawing on several kinds of account activity rather than one master list of interests. Its About You profile can reflect information connected with your shopping activity and preferences, including:
- Alexa for Shopping conversations.
- Reviews you have written.
- Your purchase history.
- Saved Lists.
- Searches and related activity.
Amazon’s recommendation help also identifies purchased products, products customers have said they own, and products they have rated as recommendation inputs. Amazon compares activity with patterns from other customers, so recommendations can change as your activity and broader customer-interest patterns change.

This means an unwanted recommendation may have several possible causes. A product could be present because you bought it, viewed it, rated it, placed it on a List, mentioned it to Alexa, or because Amazon inferred a connection from related activity. About You is useful for correcting visible profile assumptions, but it is not a complete export of every account event Amazon may retain.
Use About You to correct or remove profile details
About You is Amazon’s current profile-editing route. Amazon says it lets customers share information, give feedback on specific details, and remove information they do not want used for personalization. You can update these details at any time.
Open About You on a desktop browser
- Go to Amazon and sign in to the account whose personalization you want to review.
- Hover over your name near Account & Lists.
- Select your name or Who’s shopping?, depending on the label shown.
- Choose the relevant shopping profile if Amazon asks you to select one.
- Open About You.
Amazon can change navigation labels and placement. If you do not see the exact wording above, open your account or profile menu and look for About You under profile or personalization settings. The feature is described as available in the Shopping app, on mobile web, and on desktop, but availability and labels can vary by marketplace, account, profile, and interface version.
Open About You in the Shopping app or on mobile web
- Sign in to the Amazon account you want to edit.
- In the Shopping app, open the Me tab. On mobile web, open the account or profile area.
- Tap your name.
- Tap About You.
If the Me tab or About You entry is absent, check that you are using the current Shopping app and the intended account profile. Amazon’s instructions cover the Shopping app and mobile web, but a feature can appear later, use different wording, or be unavailable in a particular country.
Review each detail before changing it
About You may display inferred or supplied details that Amazon considers relevant to personalization. Read the wording carefully before acting. A detail can describe a preference, identity-related attribute, household context, or another profile characteristic. If it is wrong, outdated, or too sensitive for your comfort, use the feedback or edit control presented beside that detail.
- Use the edit or feedback option when the information is inaccurate and you want to correct it.
- Use the remove option when you do not want the detail used for personalization.
- Only submit information you are comfortable sharing with Amazon for this purpose.
Amazon’s published description says: “About You lets you share what you want, provide feedback to update specific details, or remove information.” Removing a profile detail does not necessarily delete the purchase, review, search, List, or voice record that may have contributed to the inference. Those records have separate controls.

Correct a particular product with Improve Your Recommendations
About You handles profile-level details. If one purchase or product is distorting your recommendations, use Amazon’s item-level recommendation control instead.
Turn off a product as a recommendation signal
- Open Amazon’s Improve Your Recommendations area while signed in.
- Find the product you do not want influencing recommendations.
- Turn off Use this item for recommendations for that product.
The wording matters: this control tells Amazon not to use that item as a recommendation input. It is not the same as canceling an order, deleting the order record, removing a product from every List, or erasing all related browsing and search activity.
Use this control for situations such as a gift you bought for someone else, a one-time project, a product you disliked, or an item that no longer represents your interests. If several products are producing the same unwanted theme, review each relevant item rather than assuming one change will correct the entire category.
Remove viewed products from Your Browsing History
Your Browsing History is a separate list from About You and Improve Your Recommendations. It records products you have viewed and provides controls for removing products you do not want retained in that list.
Remove an individual viewed item
- Open Your Browsing History while signed in.
- Locate the product you no longer want listed.
- Use the remove or delete control associated with that item.
Removing an item from the visible browsing-history list does not establish that every internal record connected with the visit has been erased. It also does not delete an order, review, List entry, Alexa interaction, or About You detail. Treat it as a history-list control and combine it with the recommendation control when the viewed item is also affecting suggestions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to use both controls
Use Improve Your Recommendations when your main goal is to stop a known product from influencing suggestions. Use Your Browsing History when your goal is to remove a viewed product from the history list. A product can be relevant to both, so reviewing both areas is the most complete response to a single unwanted item.

Review and delete Alexa shopping history separately
Alexa interactions have their own review and deletion path. Amazon identifies recordings, transcripts, and typed requests as information customers can review in Alexa privacy settings.
Open Alexa Privacy in the app
- Open the Alexa app signed in to the relevant Amazon account.
- Tap More.
- Open Alexa Privacy.
- Review the available recordings, transcripts, and typed requests.
- Delete individual records or use the available deletion controls.
Use Alexa Privacy Settings on the web
You can also open Amazon’s Alexa Privacy Settings page while signed in. The page provides the same general purpose: reviewing Alexa-related activity and managing deletion or automatic-deletion choices. The exact controls and date ranges shown can vary by account and region.
Understand what Alexa deletion does and does not do
Deleting Alexa records can limit personalization or affect some Alexa features. Amazon also warns that deletion may not remove every related interaction record, de-identified data, or information outside Amazon’s cloud. In other words, deleting a recording or transcript is an important privacy action, but it is not a guarantee that every derived signal disappears instantly from every system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If Alexa suggested products after a shopping conversation, review the relevant Alexa history and then check Improve Your Recommendations for any product that was added as a recommendation signal. Editing About You alone will not replace this Alexa-specific review.
Do not confuse recommendation settings with advertising preferences
Amazon describes interest-based advertising separately from product recommendations. You can adjust advertising preferences, but Amazon’s Privacy Notice does not say that changing an ad preference disables all personalized recommendations.
Use advertising settings when your objective is to change how interest-based ads are delivered. Use About You, Improve Your Recommendations, Your Browsing History, or Alexa Privacy when your objective is to correct the underlying personalization signal. These controls address different systems and should not be treated as one universal personalization switch.

What happens when you browse while signed out
Amazon says a signed-out browsing session with cookies blocked avoids linking that browsing history to your account. This has a practical privacy trade-off: rejecting cookies can interfere with the cart, checkout, sign-in, and other site functions. It is therefore a way to reduce account-linked browsing in a particular session, not a replacement for cleaning up an existing profile or history.
How the controls differ
| Control | What it addresses | Typical action | What the action does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| About You | Profile details and inferred personal information | Correct, provide feedback on, or remove a detail | It does not necessarily delete the purchase, review, search, List, or Alexa record behind the detail |
| Improve Your Recommendations | A particular product used as a recommendation input | Turn off Use this item for recommendations | It does not cancel an order or erase every related account record |
| Your Browsing History | Products shown in your viewed-item history | Remove viewed products from the list | It does not prove that all internal activity data has been deleted |
| Alexa Privacy | Alexa recordings, transcripts, and typed requests | Review, delete, or configure automatic deletion | Deletion may affect features and may not remove de-identified or off-cloud information |
| Advertising preferences | Interest-based ad delivery | Adjust advertising choices | It is not a universal switch for product recommendations |
| Signed-out browsing with cookies blocked | Linking a new browsing session to your account | Browse signed out and block cookies | Cart, checkout, sign-in, and other functions may stop working correctly |
A practical cleanup sequence
When Amazon’s suggestions are broadly wrong, work from the profile layer to the individual-event layers. This sequence avoids spending time in the wrong setting.
- Start with About You. Open your profile and review every displayed detail. Correct inaccurate information and remove details you do not want used for personalization.
- Check the obvious products. Open Improve Your Recommendations and turn off Use this item for recommendations for gifts, one-time purchases, unwanted products, or other items that no longer represent you.
- Clean the viewed-item list. Open Your Browsing History and remove products you do not want retained in that list.
- Review Lists and ratings you created. About You can reflect saved Lists and authored reviews. If a List or rating no longer represents your interests, manage that source in the area where you created it.
- Audit Alexa activity. In the Alexa app, use More > Alexa Privacy, or use Alexa Privacy Settings on the web. Delete records or configure automatic deletion as appropriate.
- Adjust advertising preferences separately. Do this only when your concern is interest-based ads, not as a substitute for recommendation cleanup.
- Recheck later. Recommendations can change as new activity arrives and as Amazon’s comparison patterns change. A cleanup is not a promise that every surface updates at the same moment.
Why recommendations may remain wrong after an edit
Different signals are stored in different places
Removing an About You detail does not automatically remove the order, review, search, List, browsing, or Alexa event associated with it. Likewise, deleting an Alexa transcript does not automatically remove a product from Improve Your Recommendations. The system can continue receiving signals from controls you have not reviewed.
Recommendations are not based only on your own profile
Amazon says its recommendation process compares your activity with other customers and changes as both your activity and other customers’ interests change. That means an edit can reduce one signal without producing an immediate or complete change in every recommendation row, email, or product page.
Profiles, marketplaces, and interfaces differ
The About You instructions cover desktop, mobile web, and the Shopping app, while the recommendation help cited by Amazon is for Amazon UK and the Privacy Notice cited here is for Amazon.com. Menu placement, feature availability, and labels can vary by country, marketplace, account, profile, and interface update. Do not assume that a control visible on one Amazon site appears identically on another.

Troubleshooting common cases
“I cannot find About You.”
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended account and shopping profile.
- On desktop, open the menu near your name and look for your profile or Who’s shopping?
- In the app, use the Me tab, tap your name, and look for About You.
- Try mobile web or desktop if the app does not show the entry.
- Allow for marketplace and account differences; the feature is not guaranteed to have identical placement everywhere.
“I removed a detail, but the same category still appears.”
Review Improve Your Recommendations, Your Browsing History, ratings, Lists, purchases, and Alexa Privacy. The About You change addressed a profile detail, not necessarily the activity that generated or reinforced the recommendation.

“I deleted an Alexa recording, but a related recommendation remains.”
Deletion may not remove every related record or derived signal, and recommendations can update at different times. Check the specific product in Improve Your Recommendations and remove related viewed products from Your Browsing History.
“I changed ad preferences, but recommendations did not change.”
That result is expected under Amazon’s distinction between interest-based advertising and recommendations. Return to About You and the item-level recommendation controls for recommendation changes.
“I want to erase everything Amazon knows about this interest.”
No single control described by Amazon guarantees that outcome. Use each relevant control, understand that an order, review, search, List, browsing record, Alexa record, and inferred profile detail can have different retention and deletion behavior, and read the notices shown for the specific feature before deleting data that may affect account functions.
What to expect after making changes
Amazon says About You details can be updated at any time. That does not specify a universal processing time for every recommendation surface. Some pages may continue showing older suggestions while systems refresh, while new activity can introduce different signals.
Keep a simple record of what you changed if you are troubleshooting a persistent problem: note the profile detail removed, the product toggled off, the browsing item deleted, and the Alexa date range reviewed. If a recommendation remains, you can then identify which data source has not yet been checked instead of repeating the same profile edit.
Privacy trade-offs to consider before deleting
- Alexa deletion: Amazon says deleting Alexa records can limit personalization or affect features.
- Cookie blocking: Blocking cookies can prevent account-linked browsing but can interfere with cart, checkout, sign-in, and other functions.
- Recommendation exclusions: Turning off an item for recommendations changes its use as a signal; it does not remove the item from your order history.
- Profile removal: Removing an About You detail addresses the personalization detail, not necessarily the underlying activity record.
Choose the narrowest control that solves your problem. If a single gift is polluting recommendations, exclude that item rather than deleting broader history. If an inferred profile detail is inaccurate, correct or remove that detail. If voice privacy is the concern, use Alexa Privacy and review its retention choices.
The shortest accurate answer
Open About You from your Amazon profile in the Shopping app, mobile web, or desktop. Review the details Amazon lists, then use its edit, feedback, or remove controls. For individual products, also open Improve Your Recommendations and turn off Use this item for recommendations; remove unwanted viewed products from Your Browsing History. Manage Alexa recordings, transcripts, and typed requests separately under More > Alexa Privacy or Alexa Privacy Settings. Treat advertising preferences as a separate control, because none of these settings is a guaranteed, account-wide eraser of every personalization signal.
