To review Facebook privacy settings, open your profile menu and go to Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Check each area separately: there is no single switch that makes every profile detail, post, Story, Reel, and older activity private. On Instagram, review the privacy controls currently shown in the app; exact menu labels can vary. For content shared between the services, check the audience on the Facebook item itself rather than assuming it matches Instagram.
Review Facebook’s privacy settings
Facebook groups its controls under Audience and visibility. The available areas can vary by profile type and interface, so review the options shown in your account. For a guided starting point, use Privacy Checkup to review sharing choices.
- Open your Facebook profile menu.
- Select Settings & privacy, then Settings.
- Under Audience and visibility, review the relevant settings for your profile, posts, Stories, Reels, followers and public content, profile and tagging, and blocking.
- Use Privacy Checkup to work through sharing choices, then return to the individual settings for anything it does not cover.
Choose audiences for posts and Stories
Review the audience options for future posts and Stories, and choose the scope that fits what you intend to share. A future-post default does not necessarily change the audience of material you already published; check older items separately.

Check which profile and contact details are visible, who can find or contact you, and whether Facebook can suggest your profile based on your email address or phone number. These discovery controls are different from the audience on an individual post. Facebook says current profile and cover photos are public, so avoid including information in them that you do not want publicly visible. Check tags, followers, public content, and blocking
Review profile-and-tagging controls to manage how tagged content relates to your profile, along with follower and public-content settings. Use blocking controls for accounts you do not want interacting with you. These controls address different situations; changing one does not automatically change every other audience or discovery setting.
Review linked accounts and connected experiences
Accounts Center manages selected settings and connected experiences for accounts added there, including some contact-information and ad-preference controls. Linking accounts can enable cross-account personalization, ads, and account suggestions. Review which profiles are connected and the connected experiences enabled, but do not treat Accounts Center as a universal privacy switch: account-specific audiences and other controls still need to be checked in each service. Facebook describes these options in its Accounts Center overview.

Understand what “public” and search visibility mean
A Facebook item set to Public is public information. Review the audience on posts and profile details rather than relying on a general impression that your account is private. Facebook also notes that search engines may retain a cached result after you change the external-search setting. Facebook does not control those caches, and they can take time to update, so changing the setting does not guarantee immediate removal from search results. Audit older Facebook activity
Use Activity Log to find and manage activity you have shared or interacted with. The log’s interface is visible only to you, but that does not make each underlying post or Story private: those items may still appear on your timeline, in search, or in friends’ feeds according to their own settings. Open an item from the log and review its audience or available management options. Facebook explains this distinction in its guidance on managing shared activity.

Facebook also offers tools to access or download categories of account information, including activity, personal information, connections, logged information, security and login details, off-Facebook apps and websites, preferences, and ads information. Some options may not appear in Accounts Center for every account; check Facebook Settings if you cannot find a relevant control there. See Facebook’s information-access guidance.
Check the audience on Instagram content shared to Facebook
Instagram and Facebook audiences are not necessarily the same. Facebook says that when an Instagram Reel is shared to Facebook and no Facebook Reels default has been selected, the Facebook default is Friends for a private Instagram account and Public for a public Instagram account. Instagram followers and Facebook friends may also be different groups of people. Before or after sharing, inspect the Facebook audience on the Reel itself. Review Instagram privacy controls in the app
Open Instagram and review the privacy controls currently available in your account, including options relevant to who can see your content and interact with you. Menu labels and availability can vary, so use the controls displayed in your app rather than relying on a fixed tap-by-tap path. Review Instagram’s audience choices independently from Facebook’s, then verify the audience on any item you share across the services.

A practical review checklist
- Review Facebook’s future-post and Story audiences.
- Check profile details, contact information, and whether people can find or contact you using your email address or phone number.
- Review tags, followers, public-content settings, and blocking.
- Check older posts and Stories through Activity Log, and change each item’s audience where needed.
- Review linked profiles and connected experiences in Accounts Center.
- Inspect the Facebook audience on every Instagram Reel you cross-post.
- Check Instagram’s current in-app privacy controls and the audience on individual content.
