Use Settings > Privacy & Security as your starting point. Review access by category, tighten location and tracking permissions one app at a time, turn on App Privacy Report before investigating activity, and use Safety Check when people, devices, or accounts may be sharing your information. Make selective changes first when you need to preserve a feature or avoid alerting someone; use a broader reset only when you understand its safety and access consequences.
The labels below match Apple’s current iPhone guides, including iOS 27-era screens. Names and available choices can vary by installed iOS version, Screen Time restrictions, mobile-device management, and Stolen Device Protection.
Before changing a privacy setting
A permission switch controls what an app can request or receive; it does not, by itself, prove what the developer stores, sells, or shares. Some information can be processed on the iPhone without being collected by the developer. If a request seems unnecessary, check the app’s privacy policy or ask the developer what feature requires it.
Choose a reversible, narrow change first
- Prefer changing one app’s permission instead of disabling a device-wide service when only one app is concerning.
- Use approximate location when an app does not need a precise coordinate.
- Record the original setting if you rely on the app for navigation, safety, authentication, health, or home control.
- After changing a permission, test the feature that motivated the change so you know exactly what stopped working.
Consider personal-safety consequences
If another person may monitor your phone or depend on a shared service, a sudden change can reveal that you are reviewing access, stop a safety feature, or trigger a notification. Apple advises considering potential effects before changing settings or deleting information. In a sensitive situation, make changes when you can do so safely and know how to restore essential access.

Review access by data category
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. Choose a category to see apps that have requested that type of access. Categories include Contacts, Photos, Calendar, Reminders, and Motion & Fitness, along with camera, microphone, Bluetooth, local network, and other sensors or data types that appear on your iPhone.
An app is listed only after it has asked for the permission. Therefore, an app missing from a category has not necessarily been audited; it may simply never have requested that particular access.
Step-by-step review
- Open Settings, then tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap the data category you want to inspect, such as Photos or Contacts.
- Review every listed app and note whether its access is full, limited, or denied.
- Tap an app and select the least-permissive option that still supports the feature you use.
- Open the app and test the relevant function. If it fails, return to the same screen and choose a more suitable access level.
Common category decisions

The exact choices differ by category and iOS release. A permission request alone is not evidence of misuse; judge it against the feature you are trying to use and the developer’s explanation.

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. Location Services has a device-wide switch and an app-by-app list. Review the individual entries before considering the global switch.
Review one app
- Tap an app in the Location Services list.
- Read the app’s stated reason for requesting location.
- Choose the narrowest option that fits the feature, such as Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, or Always, where those choices are offered.
- Turn Precise Location off when the app needs a general area but not your exact coordinates.
- Use the app’s key feature immediately afterward to confirm that the new setting is workable.
Approximate location can be enough for local weather, nearby store discovery, or regional content. Navigation, emergency functions, geofencing, and some automation may need greater precision or background access.

Review Apple system services
At the bottom of the Location Services screen, tap System Services. Review services individually rather than disabling Location Services reflexively. Apple warns that turning Location Services off can stop many important iPhone features. A global shutdown can affect maps, location-based suggestions, emergency behavior, time-zone detection, device-finding features, and other functions depending on your configuration.
Understand the trade-off

Stop or limit cross-company tracking
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. This screen concerns permission for an app to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites, including activity used for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. It is separate from ordinary app permissions such as camera or contacts access.
Change one app
- Review apps that have requested tracking permission.
- Turn an individual app’s switch off if you do not want to grant that request.
- Leave the switch on only when you understand why the app needs cross-company tracking and consider that use acceptable.
Prevent future prompts
Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track to stop apps from asking for this permission. This is a broad preference for tracking requests; it does not remove ordinary permissions already granted for contacts, photos, location, camera, or microphone.
Use App Privacy Report as an evidence tool
App Privacy Report shows observed access to privacy-sensitive data and sensors, plus app and website network activity. It helps you investigate what happened on the device, but it is not a trustworthiness score and cannot reveal an app’s intent.
Enable it before investigating
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Tap Turn On App Privacy Report.
- Use the iPhone normally while the report gathers observations.
- Return later to review the available access and network sections.
Collection starts only after you enable the report. Apple describes a past-seven-day view, so a report that is empty or sparse immediately after activation does not show that an app never accessed data. It simply has not collected enough history yet.

Interpret an unexpected entry
- Check whether the app has a legitimate feature that explains the sensor or data access.
- Review the app’s permission screen and privacy policy.
- Look at contacted domains in context. A domain can be reached directly by the app or through content displayed inside it; its appearance alone does not establish misuse.
- If the activity remains unexplained, deny the relevant permission, remove the app, or contact its developer.
Apple says App Privacy Report data is encrypted and stored only on the device. Turning the report off clears the report data, so export or document observations you need before disabling it.

Use Safety Check for sharing with people, apps, and devices
On an iPhone with iOS 16 or later, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. Safety Check is designed for reviewing sharing relationships and account access, not just individual sensor permissions.
Manage Sharing & Access
Choose Manage Sharing & Access for a selective review. Follow the screens to inspect and adjust sharing with people, apps, and connected devices. This path is appropriate when you want to stop one relationship or remove one app without resetting everything.
Emergency Reset
Choose Emergency Reset when you need to stop sharing quickly and proceed through Apple’s reset steps. Because a broad reset can affect relationships, devices, and services, verify the resulting settings and make sure you can still access essential accounts and safety tools.
Quick Exit and notifications
Safety Check includes Quick Exit, which closes Settings and returns to the Home Screen. Changes already made are saved. Some people or services may be notified when sharing is stopped or restarted, so consider timing and possible consequences before confirming a change.

When Safety Check options are missing
Some Safety Check options may be unavailable when Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile is installed. Behavior can also differ with Stolen Device Protection. If a control is missing, check whether the iPhone is managed by an employer or school and whether restrictions are enabled.
Know what Safety Check does not cover
Safety Check cannot review every account, device, or sharing channel. Apple specifically identifies gaps that can include:
- Non-Apple accounts and their passwords.
- Social-media sharing configured inside those services.
- Devices signed in to a different Apple Account.
- Some sharing settings on an iPad or Mac.
Review those services directly. Check account security pages, active sessions, recovery methods, shared albums, family or household access, and other devices when they are relevant to your situation. A privacy review is incomplete if an iPhone is secure but an old tablet, browser session, or non-Apple account remains connected.

- What data is involved? Distinguish a precise location from an approximate area, a selected photo from the full library, or one app’s access from sharing with another person.
- Who receives it? The audience may be one app, multiple companies through tracking, a person, a family group, or a connected device.
- What feature depends on it? Identify the exact function you use rather than assuming the entire app needs permanent access.
- What evidence do you have? A current permission is an access control; App Privacy Report is a recent, observed-activity record that begins only after activation.
- How reversible is the change? A single-app change is usually easy to test and undo. An Emergency Reset or device-wide shutdown can be faster but more disruptive.

Troubleshoot common results
The app is not listed
It may not have requested that category yet. Use the app’s feature that would require access, then return to the category screen. If it still does not appear, the app may use a different mechanism or may not need that permission.

A feature stopped working
Return to the relevant category, restore the minimum access the feature requires, and test again. For location, try While Using the App before Always; for photos, provide selected items instead of the entire library when possible.
App Privacy Report shows nothing
Confirm that it is enabled and allow time for activity to accumulate. The report does not contain history from before activation, and turning it off clears its data.
A Safety Check control is unavailable
Check the iOS version, Screen Time restrictions, mobile-device-management status, and Stolen Device Protection. A managed phone may require the administrator to change the policy.
You changed settings and need to confirm the result
Reopen the relevant permission screen, verify the switch or access level, and test the associated feature. For sharing changes, inspect connected devices and people again in Safety Check rather than assuming one change covered every channel.
Maintain your privacy settings
Repeat a short review after installing a group of new apps, changing phones, adding a family or work account, or noticing an unfamiliar notification. Start with the categories most likely to contain sensitive information: location, photos, contacts, camera, microphone, and tracking. Keep App Privacy Report enabled when you want an ongoing recent view, remembering that it is a local activity record rather than a complete statement of an app’s business practices.
Use selective controls for ordinary cleanup and Safety Check when the issue involves people, devices, or broad sharing. Whenever a change could affect personal safety, account access, or an essential service, plan the change, verify the result, and keep a safe way to recover access.
