Gboard’s privacy controls are in Gboard Settings > Privacy. Open any text field to display the keyboard, tap the settings icon, and select Privacy. You can also use Android Settings: System > Language & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Privacy. Labels and menu locations vary by Android version and phone manufacturer. From this screen you can review personalization, federated learning, voice and audio-donation choices, and delete learned data.
These controls answer different privacy questions. Personalization changes how Gboard adapts to you, federated learning concerns information sent for broader improvement, audio donations govern voluntary voice snippets, and Android’s microphone permission determines whether Gboard can access the microphone at all. Review them separately rather than looking for one universal privacy switch.
What Gboard’s privacy screen controls
The Privacy page brings together several different activities. They should not be treated as one master switch: changing one does not automatically change the others.
| Control or activity | What it affects | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Personalization | How Gboard adapts recognition to your typing and voice use | Gboard Settings > Privacy |
| Federated learning | Sharing what Gboard learns so recognition can improve across users, without sending the text or speech itself according to Google | Gboard Settings > Privacy |
| Audio donations | Voluntary upload of short voice snippets for speech-technology improvement | Gboard Settings > Privacy > Voice |
| Learned words and personalization data | Information stored locally on the phone | Gboard Settings > Privacy, or Android Settings > Dictionary |
| Microphone permission | Whether Gboard may use the microphone for voice typing | Android app permissions |
Google’s descriptions explain how these features are intended to work; they are not an independent audit of Gboard’s network traffic. For Google’s current explanation of the controls, see Learn how Gboard gets better.

Before you change anything
First identify which keyboard is active. A phone can have several on-screen keyboards installed, but the Privacy page described here belongs to Gboard. Open a text field and check the keyboard name or the input-method switcher if the gear icon does not lead to Gboard settings.
It can also help to note your current choices. Android and Gboard updates may rename a setting, move it to another section or change which options are displayed. A quick screenshot or written list lets you compare the state after an update without assuming an old guide still matches your phone.
Decide whether your goal is to prevent future collection, remove information already stored, restrict microphone access, or all three. Turning off a switch and deleting existing data are different actions. You may need to complete both.
Recommended Free Tools
Open Gboard’s Privacy settings
Use the keyboard’s Settings button
- Open an app that accepts text, such as a messaging or notes app.
- Tap a text field so Gboard appears.
- Tap the gear-shaped Settings icon. If you do not see it, tap the four-square or arrow button on the keyboard toolbar and then choose Settings.
- Tap Privacy.
The exact toolbar arrangement can differ between Gboard releases. You are in the right place when the page contains sections for learning, voice and deletion of learned information.
Use Android’s Settings app
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Language & input.
- Choose On-screen keyboard (sometimes shown as Virtual keyboard).
- Select Gboard, then Privacy.
Manufacturers may place language controls under General management, Additional settings or a similarly named category. Search Android Settings for “Gboard” if the hierarchy above is not present.
On some phones, the first menu is called Languages & input rather than Language & input. The wording is not a sign that the feature is unavailable; look for the on-screen or virtual keyboard list and then select Gboard.
Review personalization and learning choices
Personalize for you
Personalize for you is intended to improve recognition for your own use. Google says audio recordings and transcripts used for this personalization are stored on the device. Turning the option off stops this personal adaptation; it does not by itself delete information already saved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWith personal adaptation disabled, Gboard may be less familiar with your unusual names, abbreviations or speaking patterns. That is a behavior change, not a deletion command. If you want previously learned words and personalization information removed as well, use one of the deletion routes later in this guide.
Improve for everyone
Improve for everyone refers to using learning to improve recognition for a wider population rather than only your personal keyboard. The wording and switch state can vary with the Gboard version, so read the explanation shown below the switch before changing it.
This choice is about the intended scope of improvement. It is not the same as granting Android microphone access, and it is not a replacement for the separate audio-donation control. A setting that mentions improvement for everyone does not automatically mean that every recording is uploaded.

Federated learning
Google says federated learning is enabled by default. In Google’s description, Gboard sends what it has learned for combination with learnings from other users, while the original text or speech stays on the phone. The process is described as running when the phone is charging, connected to Wi‑Fi and not being used. Turn off the federated-learning option on the Privacy page if you do not want to participate.
Federated learning is therefore different from a conventional upload of the words or recordings used to produce a suggestion. Google describes the shared material as what the keyboard learned, while the source text or speech remains on the device. This is Google’s explanation of the feature, not an independent inspection of data leaving the phone.
This is different from uploading an audio recording. Federated learning is about sending learned information; the separate audio-donation setting controls whether snippets themselves are sent.
Read the status instead of assuming
Switches can have different defaults after an update, restore or device migration. Check the current position of each switch on your phone. A change normally takes effect for future learning; it is not a substitute for the deletion controls described below.
If several people use the same phone, review the settings while signed into the relevant device profile. Gboard’s local learned words and personalization data are stored on the device, so changing a setting on one phone does not function as a universal switch for every device where you use Gboard.

Stop voluntary audio donations
- Open Gboard Settings > Privacy.
- Scroll to the Voice section.
- Turn Audio donations off.
Google describes audio donations as voluntary. It says donated snippets are sent to Google to improve speech recognition and may be heard or transcribed by human reviewers. Google also says the snippets are not associated with you or your account after they are sent.
Most donated snippets are no longer than 15 seconds. Google says a snippet can be as long as 25 seconds when it includes silence or unrecognized audio, and that it will not keep snippets longer than 18 months. These are Google’s stated limits, not measurements from an independent test.
Turning audio donations off does not turn off federated learning. If you want to stop both activities, inspect both switches separately. Likewise, disabling donations does not revoke Android’s microphone permission; it only changes the donation choice.
Turning donations off also cannot undo a snippet that was already sent. The switch governs future voluntary donations. If your broader aim is to remove local material Gboard has learned, use Delete learned words and data; that command addresses on-device data rather than previously transmitted snippets.
What Google says Gboard sends—and does not send
Google’s Gboard Help documentation says that searches typed through Gboard are sent to Google to provide search results. It also says usage statistics are sent so Google can understand how features are used and improve Gboard, and that talk-to-text voice input is sent for transcription.

The same documentation says Gboard does not send other typed content, such as passwords or chats, and that saved words are not sent. Google describes saved words this way: “These words are saved only to your device.” Treat these statements as Google’s product documentation rather than a guarantee established by an outside security audit.
These statements describe different activities. Typing a query into a Gboard search feature is not the same event as entering a password into a password field, and pressing the microphone button for talk-to-text is not the same as opting into audio donations. The relevant feature and its explanation should guide your decision.
Federated learning has a different data flow in Google’s explanation: the text or speech itself remains on the device while information learned from it is sent for aggregation. Conventional audio donations, in contrast, involve sending the selected snippets. The two mechanisms therefore require separate decisions.

Use Gboard’s broader deletion control
- Open Gboard Settings > Privacy.
- Tap Delete learned words and data.
- Read the confirmation message and confirm the deletion.
This control clears the learned information Gboard has saved on the device, including the personalization data covered by that screen. Your keyboard remains installed, but suggestions may be less familiar until Gboard learns from future use.
Afterward, test a few ordinary words rather than concluding that the keyboard is broken because its suggestions changed. A reset removes the local history that made predictions feel personal. If personalization or other learning choices remain enabled, new local suggestions can be created as you continue typing.
Delete saved dictionary words only
- Open Android Settings.
- Go to System > Languages & input > On-screen keyboard (the labels can vary).
- Choose Gboard, then Dictionary.
- Tap Delete learned words.
- Enter the confirmation number shown on screen and confirm.
Google documents this dictionary route separately from the Privacy-page deletion command. Use it when your goal is specifically to remove saved dictionary words rather than review every learning setting.
The confirmation number is an intentional safeguard against an accidental tap. Read the number displayed by your phone and enter that number, not a code from another screen or an earlier attempt.
Understand what deletion does not change
Deleting local data does not automatically switch off personalization, federated learning or audio donations. If you do not want new information to be learned or donated, change the relevant switches after deleting the existing data. Conversely, turning a switch off does not necessarily erase information already stored; use the deletion command for that.
Deletion also does not uninstall Gboard, remove Android’s microphone permission or alter other keyboards. It is a targeted cleanup of learned information. Review the separate controls if your objective includes restricting voice access or stopping future shared learning.
Check microphone permission separately
Voice typing depends on Android’s microphone permission, which is independent of audio donations and learning controls.

- Open Android Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Gboard.
- Choose Permissions.
- Tap Microphone.
- Select Allow only while using the app if you want Gboard to access the microphone during active use without granting unrestricted background access.
If microphone access is denied, the voice-typing button may fail even when audio donations are disabled or enabled. Granting permission allows voice input; it does not enroll you in audio donations.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Conversely, turning off audio donations does not prevent Gboard from using the microphone for a voice-typing request when Android permission allows it. Choose settings for common privacy goals
You want normal typing but no voluntary voice uploads
Leave the keyboard enabled, turn Audio donations off under Privacy > Voice, and keep microphone permission only if you use voice typing. Audio-donation status does not determine whether talk-to-text can transcribe your current request.
You do not want your device contributing to shared learning
Turn off the federated-learning option on the Privacy screen. If you also do not want snippets sent for speech improvement, turn off audio donations separately. These are two independent choices.
You want the most local control available in the documented settings
Review Personalize for you, turn off federated learning and audio donations if those forms of participation do not fit your preference, and set microphone permission to Allow only while using the app or deny it when you do not use voice typing. Then delete learned words and data to clear the existing local history. This combination changes both future behavior and the data already stored on the phone.
You want to remove words Gboard has already learned
Use Delete learned words and data for the broader on-device cleanup, or the Dictionary route when you only want to remove saved dictionary words. Then review the learning switches if you want to prevent the data from being rebuilt.
You rely on voice typing but want tighter access
Keep microphone permission set to Allow only while using the app. Decide separately whether to allow audio donations and whether to participate in federated learning. Voice typing can remain available without opting into donations.

The Privacy item is missing
- Verify that the active on-screen keyboard is Gboard rather than another keyboard.
- Open the Play Store and update Gboard. Google recommends making sure Gboard is updated when a setting is unavailable.
- Reopen the keyboard after the update and follow the Android Settings path again.
- Search Settings for “Gboard” because some manufacturers rename Language & input or place it under another system category.
Some controls can also be described with slightly different wording in different Gboard releases. Read the explanatory text beneath a switch, not only its title, before deciding that an option is absent or equivalent to another one.
The microphone button does nothing
- Check Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.
- Confirm that another app or a device-wide microphone privacy switch has not blocked access.
- Test voice typing after granting Allow only while using the app.
- Remember that microphone permission and audio donations are separate. Changing one does not repair or alter the other.
Suggestions changed after deletion
That is expected: deleting learned data removes the local history used for personalization. As you type, Gboard can build new on-device suggestions according to the learning switches that remain enabled.

You cannot find the Dictionary route
Use the Privacy page first and search Android Settings for Dictionary or Gboard. The dictionary command is documented separately, and a manufacturer may place it under a slightly different language or keyboard category. Updating Gboard can also restore controls that are missing in an older release.
Advanced voice-typing context
Some devices expose additional voice-typing explanations or controls. Google’s documentation for advanced voice typing describes how recognition features can use on-device processing and learning options; review the wording shown for your Android version before enabling a feature. See Google’s advanced voice typing guidance for the feature-specific description.
Do not infer from an on-device personalization label that every voice-related function is local, or from an audio-donation opt-out that all voice data flows have stopped. Check the individual setting, the microphone permission and the explanation beneath each switch.
A practical privacy review checklist
- Open Gboard Settings > Privacy and record the current status of each switch.
- Decide whether you want personal adaptation, shared learning through federated learning, and voluntary audio donations; they are separate decisions.
- Turn off Audio donations under Privacy > Voice if you do not want future snippets sent.
- Turn off federated learning if you do not want learned information sent for aggregation.
- Use Delete learned words and data to clear the broader local history, or Dictionary > Delete learned words for dictionary entries.
- Review Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone independently of the Privacy page.
- After an Android or Gboard update, revisit the page because labels, defaults and menu locations can change.
- Test the result: type a few words, try voice typing if you permit it, and confirm that the controls still match your goal.
Official help
Google’s main explanation of Gboard learning, personalization, federated learning and audio donations is Learn how Gboard gets better. For microphone permissions, learned-word deletion and troubleshooting, consult Fix problems with Gboard. Menu names can differ by Android release and manufacturer, but these pages describe the controls that the Privacy screen is designed to manage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Gboard’s privacy settings on Android?
Open a text field, show Gboard, tap the gear icon, and choose Privacy. Alternatively, open Android Settings and go to System > Language & input > On-screen keyboard > Gboard > Privacy. Menu names can differ by phone.
Does turning off audio donations disable federated learning?
No. Google documents them as separate choices. Turn off Audio donations under Privacy > Voice, and turn off federated learning separately if you do not want learned information sent for aggregation.
Does deleting learned words turn off future learning?
No. Deletion clears existing on-device learned information. Review and change the personalization, federated-learning and audio-donation switches separately to control future behavior.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I use voice typing without audio donations?
Yes. Voice typing depends on Android’s microphone permission. You can allow microphone access while using Gboard and turn audio donations off; permission and donations are independent.
How long are donated Gboard audio snippets?
Google says most are no longer than 15 seconds, with some lasting up to 25 seconds when they include silence or unrecognized audio. Google also says it will not keep snippets longer than 18 months.
Are saved Gboard words sent to Google?
Google’s Gboard Help says saved words are not sent and describes them as saved only to your device. This is Google’s documented product explanation, not an independent network audit.
Why did my suggestions change after I cleared learned data?
Clearing learned data removes the local history used for personalization, so suggestions may become less familiar. If learning remains enabled, Gboard can build new on-device suggestions over time.
What should I do if the Privacy option is missing?
Confirm that Gboard is the active keyboard, update Gboard in the Play Store, reopen its settings, and search Android Settings for “Gboard.” Manufacturers may move or rename the language and keyboard menus.
The Bottom Line
Gboard’s Privacy page contains separate decisions, not one all-purpose switch. Review personalization and federated learning, disable voluntary audio donations under Privacy > Voice if desired, clear learned data when you want existing local information removed, and manage microphone permission in Android’s app settings. Recheck the page after updates because labels and menu locations can change.
