To change a permission for a known app, open Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions, select the permission, and choose an available setting. To audit every app that can use a particular type of data, open Settings → Security & Privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy → Permission manager, choose a permission category, and review the listed apps. Android’s labels and available choices vary by phone and Android version, so use Settings search for “Permissions” or “Permission manager” when the paths do not match.

What Android app permissions control

An Android permission is a grant that lets an app use a protected capability or type of information. Depending on the device and Android release, categories can include location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and videos, notifications, nearby devices, and files. A permission decision is separate from whether an app has an account or whether you are signed in: the app can request access, but Android controls whether that request is granted.

There are three useful views of those decisions:

  • App page: the quickest way to change one known app’s access.
  • Permission manager: a category-based inventory, such as every app that has location access.
  • Privacy dashboard: a recent-activity view showing which apps used selected sensitive permissions.

Use the app page when a particular app is the concern. Use Permission manager for a broad audit. Use Privacy dashboard when you want to know whether an app recently accessed a permission rather than merely whether it is allowed to do so. Google documents these controls in its Android app-permissions guide and its Privacy dashboard guide.

Before changing anything

Expect different labels on different phones

Google notes that menu paths, names, and feature availability can differ by phone manufacturer, Android version, and software build. One phone may put the controls under Security & Privacy; another may show a top-level Privacy menu. A category may also be named slightly differently, or a particular permission may not be available on an older release.

Know what you are trying to accomplish

Decide whether you are trying to stop an app from using a capability, limit when it can use it, find an app with unusually broad access, or investigate a recent access event. That goal determines the most efficient view. Revoking a permission can remove a feature, so plan to test the app’s relevant function afterward.

Use least access that still works

Grant only the access needed for the feature you use. A navigation app may need location while you navigate; a photo editor may need selected photos or photos and videos; a messaging app may need the microphone only when you record a voice message. If Android offers a narrower choice, start there and expand access only if the feature cannot work.

Change permissions for one app

This is the clearest route when you already know which app you want to inspect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps. If the app is not immediately listed, tap See all apps (or the equivalent list control).
  3. Select the app’s name.
  4. Tap Permissions.
  5. Choose a permission shown under allowed, not allowed, or a similar status group.
  6. Select one of the settings Android offers for that permission.

The available choices depend on the permission and Android version. A camera permission may present a simple allow-or-deny decision, while location can offer timing and precision choices. If a permission is absent, the app may not request it, the phone may use a different category name, or that control may not be exposed on your Android release.

Check the result in the app

Return to the app and try the feature that uses the permission. If it fails, Android may display a new request explaining what the app needs. You can grant a narrower option if one is offered, or return to the same Permissions screen to restore access. A feature that does not need the permission should continue to work without it; a feature that genuinely depends on it may not.

When the app is not in the list

On the Apps screen, choose See all apps and search or scroll. System components can be listed separately or have names that differ from the icon label. If you still cannot find the entry, use Settings search for the app name, then look for a result that opens its app-information page.

Review and change access by permission type

Permission manager is better for an audit because it groups apps by the capability they can use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security & Privacy or Privacy.
  3. Open Privacy if it is a separate submenu.
  4. Tap Permission manager.
  5. Select a category such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos and videos, Notifications, Nearby devices, or Files, where those categories are present.
  6. Choose an app in that category and select a different available setting.

The category screen normally separates apps by their current state, such as allowed and not allowed. Open each app entry to see the choices for that particular permission. Do not assume that a setting offered in one category is available in another: permission-specific rules control the list.

What this view answers

  • “Which apps can use my microphone?” Open the Microphone category and inspect the allowed group.
  • “Which apps can see my location?” Open Location; location may have additional timing and precision controls.
  • “Can I remove access without opening every app?” Yes. Select each app from the category list and change its setting there.

Permission manager shows the current grant state. It does not by itself prove that an app used the permission recently; use Privacy dashboard for that question.

See which apps recently used a permission with Privacy dashboard

Privacy dashboard is an activity view, not a replacement for Permission manager. It helps you investigate recent access to sensitive capabilities.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, or open Security & Privacy → Privacy on phones that nest it there.
  3. Tap Privacy dashboard.
  4. Select the permission category you want to investigate.
  5. Choose an app in the activity list to review its access and, where offered, update the permission.

Google documents a lookback of seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. Those durations are version-specific documentation, not a promise that every Android release or manufacturer interface retains the same history. A lack of an event means no activity is shown in the dashboard’s documented window; it does not establish that an app has never used the permission.

Dashboard versus Permission manager

Question Use this view What it tells you
Which apps currently have a permission? Permission manager Apps grouped by a permission category and their current grant status.
Which app used a permission recently? Privacy dashboard Recent access events within the history available on that Android version.
How do I change one known app? App page → Permissions All permission controls exposed for that app in one place.

Understand the choices Android may offer

Android does not use one universal set of labels for every permission. The options below describe common choices documented by Google; your phone may show fewer options or different wording.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
Choice Meaning Typical use
Allow all the time Permits access in the background when the permission supports that mode. A location-dependent feature that must operate when the app is not on screen. This is a location option, not a universal option for every permission.
Allow only while using the app Permits access while you are actively using the app. Maps, camera, or microphone features that do not need background access.
Ask every time Prompts you when the app requests access, where Android supports this choice. Occasional use when you want to decide at each request.
Don’t allow Denies the permission until you change it. Apps whose feature does not need the capability, or access you do not want to grant.

For categories such as notifications or files, Android may present a different set of controls. Treat the labels shown on your screen as authoritative for that permission and version.

Set approximate or precise location

Location has two separate decisions on supported devices: whether the app can access location and how precise that location may be. Google’s location-permissions guidance describes approximate and precise choices.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions → Location, or open Permission manager → Location and select the app.
  2. Choose the timing option your phone provides, such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Some devices also offer Allow all the time.
  3. If a precision control is shown, turn Use precise location off to provide approximate location, or leave it on when the app genuinely requires greater accuracy.

Approximate location can be sufficient for nearby recommendations or regional information, while turn-by-turn navigation may need precise data. The app’s own feature requirements and the controls your Android version exposes determine what you can select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use device-wide camera and microphone controls

Android also provides broad controls that can block camera or microphone access for the device, in addition to each app’s individual permission.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Security & Privacy → Privacy → Privacy controls when those labels are present.
  3. Locate the device-wide Camera access or Microphone access control.
  4. Turn the relevant control off to block access broadly, or on when you need apps to use the hardware.

Google includes these controls in its permission instructions. Because the control is device-wide, turning it off can affect every app that depends on the camera or microphone. If one app is the concern, changing that app’s permission is more targeted.

A practical privacy-permission audit

Use this sequence when you want a repeatable review rather than a single change.

  1. Start with recent activity. Open Privacy dashboard and inspect camera, microphone, location, or another sensitive category that concerns you.
  2. Identify unexpected apps. Note apps whose recent use does not match what you were doing, then open their permission details.
  3. Check the full category. Open Permission manager for that category so you see apps that have access even if they have not appeared in the dashboard’s recent window.
  4. Reduce broad grants. For each app, choose while-in-use, ask-every-time, approximate location, or don’t allow when that still supports the feature.
  5. Review high-impact hardware access. If you need an immediate device-wide block, use the camera and microphone Privacy controls.
  6. Test essential features. Open the app and try the function you care about. Restore a permission only when the failure demonstrates a real requirement.

This process separates evidence of recent use from the standing permission itself: the dashboard tells you what happened recently, while Permission manager tells you what is currently permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do when a permission request seems risky

Some apps ask you to enable a setting outside ordinary runtime permissions, such as a restricted setting associated with accessibility or another sensitive capability. Google warns that harmful apps may request risky settings and says: “We don’t recommend that you allow restricted settings unless you trust the app developer.” Read Google’s full explanation in Learn about restricted settings.

Pause before enabling it

  • Confirm that you intentionally installed the app and recognize its developer.
  • Ask whether the requested access is necessary for the feature you want.
  • Be especially cautious if the app provides no clear explanation or pressures you to bypass a warning.
  • If you cannot establish trust or necessity, leave the restricted setting disabled and remove the app if appropriate.

Accessibility access deserves particular care because Google explains that it can let an app read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. That is substantially broader than granting access to one photo, one location request, or one microphone session.

Troubleshoot a menu that does not match

Search Settings directly

Open Settings and search for Permissions, Permission manager, Privacy dashboard, Camera access, or Microphone access. Search often reaches the correct screen when a manufacturer has renamed or regrouped menus.

Check the Android version and manufacturer guide

Privacy dashboard history and available choices vary by Android release. Manufacturer software can also move controls or omit a feature. Check the phone’s Android version in its system-information screen, then use the manufacturer’s support instructions for that model if Google’s labels do not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a permission-specific limitation

A missing “allow all the time” choice does not necessarily indicate an error: that option is associated with location on supported versions and is not offered for every category. Likewise, approximate-versus-precise controls appear only where the device and app flow support them.

Recover a broken feature

Return to Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions, select the denied permission, and choose the least permissive option that lets the feature operate. Then reopen the app and retry. If no suitable choice exists, the feature may require a permission your Android version cannot grant in a narrower mode.

Common decisions, with concrete examples

A weather app asks for location

If you only check conditions while the app is open, choose Allow only while using the app. If the app offers approximate location and city-level forecasts are sufficient, turn precise location off. An always-on location choice is unnecessary unless a feature you use genuinely works in the background.

A video-call app needs the microphone

Grant microphone access when you make calls, then keep the app-level permission limited to the choices your phone provides. If you need an immediate block for all apps, use the device-wide microphone control; remember that this will also stop legitimate calls until you turn it back on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A photo utility requests contacts

Open Permission manager → Contacts to see whether the utility has access and whether other apps do as well. If the utility’s photo function does not require contacts, choose Don’t allow and test the feature. Do not grant contacts merely because the app requests it.

An unfamiliar app appears in Privacy dashboard

Open the event, then inspect the app’s Permissions page and its entry in the relevant Permission manager category. If the activity is inconsistent with the app’s purpose, deny the permission and investigate the app’s developer before granting it again.

Quick reference

Goal Path
Change one app Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions
Find every app with a category Settings → Security & Privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy → Permission manager → [category]
See recent use Settings → Privacy (or Security & Privacy → Privacy) → Privacy dashboard → [permission]

Fix a path mismatch Search Settings for Permissions, Permission manager, or Privacy dashboard; then check the Android version and manufacturer documentation.

Sources and version notes

The menu names and choices in this guide follow Google’s Android Help documentation. Consult the relevant page for your device’s current wording:

Because Android manufacturers customize Settings, your phone may not expose every category, timing option, dashboard period, or device-wide toggle described here. The reliable method is to identify the app or permission category, use the closest matching Settings path, and select the narrowest available access that still performs the function you need.
