To limit an AI phone’s access, audit two separate layers: the operating system’s app permissions and the AI assistant’s account, activity, and service settings. On Android, start with Privacy Dashboard, then inspect permissions for the assistant’s host app (Google app for Gemini), and finally review the assistant’s cloud-processing controls. This reduces unnecessary access, but no permission audit by itself proves that your account data or prompts are never processed by an online service.

What an AI-phone privacy review can—and cannot—show

Phone permissions control whether an app can use resources such as the camera, microphone, location, contacts, photos, files, calendar, phone, call logs, SMS, notifications, or nearby devices. They are the first control to check when an AI feature asks for more access than you expect.

Assistant activity and service settings answer a different question: what information the provider may retain, use as context, or process on its servers when you use the assistant. A permission can be denied while you still use an account-based service, and a permission can be granted without every possible category of data being used in every interaction. Treat the two layers as complementary checks, not substitutes.

Android is the clearest starting point because Google documents its controls and Gemini integration. Menu names vary by Android release and manufacturer. If your labels differ, search Settings for Privacy, Privacy dashboard, Permission manager, or the name of the AI service. Do not assume an Android path is the same on an iPhone; Apple Intelligence controls are not covered by the steps below.

1. Record the phone and software version first

Write down the phone model, Android version, and the name and version of the AI assistant before changing anything. The same manufacturer can move controls between releases, and an AI feature may be available only on selected models or regions. On Android, open Settings and search for About phone or Android version. Also note whether the assistant is Gemini, another vendor’s assistant, or an AI feature built into a camera, keyboard, gallery, dialer, or messaging app.

This record gives you a way to reverse a change and helps support staff reproduce a problem. It also prevents a common mistake: applying instructions for a separately installed AI app when the feature is actually delivered through a system or host app.

2. Check recent camera, microphone, and location access

Recent access history is the fastest way to spot an unexpected use of a sensitive sensor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy, or Security and privacy followed by Privacy, depending on the phone.
  3. Tap Privacy dashboard.
  4. Select Camera, Microphone, Location, or another listed permission.
  5. Review the apps shown, the access times, and the app entry that opened the resource.
  6. Open an app from the list to go directly to its permission controls.

Google Android Help describes the dashboard this way: “From the privacy dashboard, you can see which apps are accessing data, which permissions apps are using, and when that access is happening.” The documented history window is version-specific: Android 13 shows the previous seven days, while Android 12 shows the previous 24 hours. These are interface history windows, not measurements of how often people use AI.

If an AI app appears at a time when you were not using its relevant feature, investigate before simply deleting it. A scheduled task, a voice wake feature, an embedded assistant, or another component of the same app may explain the entry. If the access is not needed, change the permission in the app’s detail screen and test the feature you still want.

The dashboard is an activity view, not a network monitor. It can show that an app used a permission, but it cannot establish that no information left the phone, that an account record was not used, or that a service did not receive information supplied directly in a prompt.

3. Review permissions both by app and by category

Open one app’s permission list

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the AI app or the app that provides the feature.
  3. Tap Permissions.
  4. For each sensitive item, choose the least access that still supports the function you use.

Google also documents a category-first route: Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. From there, select a permission such as Location or Microphone to see every app that can use it. Manufacturers may rename or rearrange these screens, so use Settings search if the path is absent. Google’s Android permission guidance is available at Change app permissions on your Android phone.

Choose the narrowest useful setting

Permission Choices to look for What the choice changes Practical decision
Location All the time; Allow only while using the app; Ask every time; Don’t allow Determines whether location can be used in the background, only during active use, after a prompt, or not at all. Use Allow only while using for navigation or location-aware answers you actively request. Use Ask every time when use is occasional. Deny it when the feature has no location requirement.
Camera Allow, ask where offered, or deny Controls camera-based questions, scanning, visual search, and camera capture. Deny it if you never ask the assistant to interpret a live view or image. Grant it temporarily when you need that feature.
Microphone Allow, ask where offered, or deny Controls voice input and other audio capture features. Deny it if you use text only. Re-enable it for voice conversations or dictation.
Contacts Allow or deny, with device-specific granular options Can enable contact-aware suggestions, calling, or message addressing. Deny it if you do not want contact names available to the assistant. Test calling and message features after the change.
Photos and videos/files Selected items, all items, or deny, where supported Controls whether the assistant can use saved images or files as input. Choose selected items when your phone offers that option; otherwise deny until you need an upload.
Calendar, phone, call logs, SMS Allow or deny Enables scheduling, calling, messaging, or context based on communication history. Grant only the specific workflow you use. Removing access can disable contact suggestions, calls, messages, or calendar actions.
Notifications and nearby devices Allow or deny Controls notification reading or interaction with nearby hardware, depending on the app. Keep disabled unless the AI feature demonstrably needs the function.

Android may also provide device-wide privacy switches for camera and microphone. On supported configurations, open Settings > Privacy (or Security and privacy > Privacy controls) and turn off camera or microphone access globally. This is broader than changing one app: every app that relies on that sensor will stop working until you turn the switch back on.

After each reduction, open the intended AI feature and test it. A denied permission can make voice input, camera questions, contact-aware calls, or location-dependent answers fail by design. That failure tells you which capability depended on the permission; it does not mean the permission was universally required for every assistant function.

4. Audit Gemini and the Google app together

On Android, do not look only for an app entry named Gemini. Google says Gemini’s mobile assistant capabilities are hosted by the Google app, and Gemini can use permissions granted to that app. Review both any Gemini entry shown on your phone and the Google app itself:

  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Search for Gemini and open its permissions if it appears.
  3. Return to the app list, open Google, and tap Permissions.
  4. Review camera, microphone, contacts, location, calendar, phone, call logs, photos/files, and any other permission listed on your device.
  5. Remove access for capabilities you do not use, then test the remaining assistant tasks.

Google’s documentation gives examples of what Google app access can enable: microphone access supports voice input; calendar access supports calendar-related features; phone access supports calls; and call-log information can inform contact suggestions. Those examples are feature-dependent, not a statement that every permission is required for every Gemini session. See Manage your Google app permissions for Google’s current descriptions.

Make the decision feature by feature. If you never use voice input, camera-based questions, contact-aware tasks, or location-dependent answers, removing the corresponding access is reasonable. If you do use one of them, choose a while-in-use or prompt-based option when available instead of granting permanent background access.

5. Separate Android permissions from Gemini’s service and account controls

Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes additional system and device information that the mobile experience may process. Its description includes call and message logs, contacts, installed apps, language preferences, screen content, and page context or URL when using the Gemini overlay. It also describes precise-location processing when permission is granted.

That list is Google’s description of possible service context and handling; it is not a claim that every category is collected in every interaction. The practical consequence is that an Android permission audit cannot answer every privacy question about an account-based assistant.

Review the service controls separately:

  1. Open Gemini and your Google account controls, using the current Gemini Apps activity or privacy settings labels shown on your device.
  2. Check whether activity history is on, how long activity is retained, and which connected services or apps are enabled.
  3. Review overlay and screen-context features if you use Gemini over another app.
  4. Delete activity or change retention according to the choices offered, then revisit connected-service access after major app updates.

These controls govern account and service processing, while Android’s Permission manager governs access to local device resources. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

6. Use Google Play’s Data safety label as a second disclosure—not a permission audit

For an AI app you are considering or already installed, open its Google Play listing and expand the Data safety section. Google says the label presents developer-provided information about collection and sharing for that app’s Google Play distribution. It is useful for seeing the developer’s stated practices, but it answers a different question from the Android permission screen.

Read the label alongside the app’s privacy notice and your phone’s permissions. Google notes that disclosures can vary with use, region, age, and app version, and that some on-device or ephemeral processing is treated differently under the label rules. The label is therefore a disclosure with stated scope and exceptions, not an independent audit or a guarantee that no data will be processed.

If the listing says an app can collect a category that does not appear in its current permission list, that is not automatically a contradiction: the category may come from information you submit directly, an account, an integrated service, or processing that does not require the listed runtime permission. Conversely, a granted permission does not prove that the app used it recently; Privacy Dashboard is the better place to check recent use.

7. Look for an on-device-only AI setting

Some phones expose an AI-specific switch that changes where supported features process data. The Galaxy Z Flip6 user guide documents Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device. The guide also says that some features require online processing, so enabling the option can reduce feature availability or leave particular functions unable to run.

Use that setting only as documented for your exact model and software:

  1. Open Settings and search for Galaxy AI, AI, or Process data only on device.
  2. Read the feature list or warning shown beside the switch.
  3. Enable on-device-only processing if the privacy trade-off is more important to you than online-dependent functions.
  4. Test each AI feature you rely on; do not assume that a successful toggle means every AI operation is local.

The documented control is evidence for the supported Galaxy Z Flip6 configuration, not a universal setting for every Galaxy AI phone or feature. If your phone has no equivalent option, do not infer that it processes everything locally or everything online; check its current manual and feature-specific privacy information.

The cited guide is available as a PDF from Samsung: Galaxy Z Flip6 user guide.

How to choose between permission settings

When two settings both appear workable, compare them on five practical axes: the functionality retained, whether access can occur in the background, whether the control applies to one app or the whole phone, how much recent history you can inspect, and whether the AI task runs on-device or needs online processing.

Choice Functionality Background exposure Scope Best fit
Allow all the time Maximum location or sensor convenience Highest for that permission Usually one app; a device-wide switch can be broader A feature that genuinely must work while you are not actively viewing it
Allow only while using Active-session features continue Limited while the app is not in use App-level Navigation, live camera questions, or voice use started intentionally
Ask every time Intermittent access remains possible Requires a prompt for each eligible use App-level Occasional camera, microphone, location, or file access
Don’t allow Any dependent feature stops No access through that permission App-level Capabilities you never use or cannot justify
Device-wide camera/microphone off All apps lose that sensor Blocks sensor use across the phone Device-wide A temporary high-privacy state or troubleshooting an unexpected sensor use
On-device-only AI processing Only supported local features remain available Reduces online processing for covered tasks Feature/model-specific When local processing matters more than full feature coverage

Common problems after tightening access

Voice input stopped

Check the microphone permission for the app that actually hosts the assistant. With Gemini, that may be the Google app rather than a separately named Gemini entry. If you want voice only occasionally, choose an ask-every-time option where offered instead of restoring permanent access.

The assistant cannot identify a photo or live scene

Camera permission is required for camera-based questions. Grant it temporarily, perform the task, and revoke it again if you do not use visual features regularly. If you are selecting a saved image, check photos or files permission separately; camera and file access are not interchangeable.

Calls, messages, contacts, or calendar actions fail

Review the relevant Google app or assistant permissions for contacts, phone, call logs, SMS, or calendar. Restore only the permission tied to the action you want, then test it. Removing one permission can disable a feature without affecting text chat or unrelated tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dashboard entry is older than expected or missing

Android’s documented history is seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. A different Android version or manufacturer interface may show another window or label. Use the current app permission screen for the present state, and do not treat an empty history as proof that no service processing occurred.

An AI feature still processes information after a permission is denied

Check whether the information was supplied directly in a prompt, came from an account or connected service, or was handled by another app. Android permissions govern local resource access; they do not disable account activity, cloud processing, or data already shared with a provider. Review the assistant’s activity and connected-service controls separately.

A maintenance routine that keeps the review useful

  • Repeat the Privacy Dashboard check after a major Android or assistant update.
  • Revisit Google app permissions after enabling a new Gemini capability.
  • Remove access from AI apps you no longer use instead of leaving broad permissions indefinitely.
  • Check the app’s Google Play Data safety disclosure and privacy notice when installing a new AI tool or when its behavior changes.
  • Record any permission you restore temporarily, then return it to a narrower setting after the task.
  • Review connected services and Gemini Apps activity separately from local permissions.
  • For phones offering on-device-only processing, confirm which individual features are covered rather than assuming the toggle applies to all AI operations.

The practical stopping rule is simple: keep only the permissions that support a feature you actively use, prefer while-in-use or prompt-based access to background access, and make a separate decision about account and online processing. That combination limits unnecessary local access without pretending that a settings screen can answer every question about an AI service’s data handling.
