Review AI-generated HTML as a draft, not as publish-ready code. Check that its content is accurate, validate its markup, inspect accessibility and security, and preview the result in the real publishing environment. A pass on one check does not establish that the page is safe, accessible, correct, or ready to publish.
How do I review AI-generated HTML before publishing it? Use the workflow below to separate checks a tool can assist with from decisions that require human judgment.
1. Check the content against the request
Start with the page’s intended purpose, source material, and publishing requirements. Confirm that the generated HTML says what the page is supposed to say—not merely that the tags look plausible.
- Verify factual claims against the source material and correct omissions or misleading wording.
- Check that links point to the intended destinations and that labels and headings accurately describe their content.
- Confirm that the page meets the requested format and any requirements of the site, CMS, email system, or application where it will appear.
These are editorial checks. A markup validator cannot determine whether a claim is true or a heading represents the page honestly.

2. Validate the HTML markup
Submit the document to the W3C Nu Html Checker. Review reported errors and warnings, then decide what to fix in context rather than treating every message as a complete diagnosis.
W3C’s H88 technique, “Using HTML according to spec,” recommends checking whether the page uses specification-defined elements and attributes, uses them as specified, and parses correctly. Its procedure says: “Check that the page can be parsed correctly, according to the rules of the specification.”
Validation is useful evidence about markup, not a general approval or safety certificate. As H88 notes, tools can help with some checks; evaluating whether markup is used properly can call for heuristic tools and human judgment.
3. Review accessibility in the page’s real context
Use the relevant criteria in W3C’s WCAG 2.2 Quick Reference to guide the review. Check the page’s structure, names and labels, text alternatives for non-text content, keyboard operation, and whether assistive technologies can access the information and functionality.
- Inspect headings and other structure for a meaningful organization.
- Check that controls have clear names and labels, and that images or other non-text content have appropriate alternatives for their purpose.
- Try keyboard interaction and, where feasible, use the browser and assistive technology relevant to the intended audience.
Conformance and real-world support are not identical. W3C’s guidance on WCAG 2.2 conformance explains that support varies among browsers, assistive technologies, and languages. Automated tools can flag issues, but they cannot by themselves establish that the whole experience works for people in the deployment context.
4. Inspect security-sensitive code and content
Look specifically for scripts, event handlers, dynamic HTML insertion, embedded third-party resources, and content that comes from an untrusted source. The key question is not just what the HTML contains, but how the application handles data when it renders the page.

OWASP’s Web Frontend Security Cheat Sheet states: “The fundamental security rule is to never use innerHTML with untrusted data.” If the application needs to insert plain text, use textContent so the text is not interpreted as markup. If inserting HTML is genuinely required, sanitize it with an appropriate library and review it for the specific context.

5. Preview the result where it will be published
Open the page in the destination CMS or application, then check it in the target browsers. The publishing system may transform or filter the source, so review the resulting page rather than relying only on the HTML file.

- Follow links and exercise interactive behavior.
- Look for changes the CMS or application applied to the markup.
Standards conformance in the source alone does not establish that the rendered publication matches the intended result.

Keep a short record of issues found, fixes applied, and checks performed manually. Note any known limitations that remain. After edits, rerun the checks relevant to those changes, then have a responsible person review and approve the final output.
What an AI authoring tool can—and cannot—establish
Authoring tools can help create accessible content, but using one does not make every output accessible. W3C’s Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) addresses both the accessibility of authoring tools and how they support authors in creating WCAG-conforming content. ATAG 2.0 was published in 2015, and W3C encourages use of the latest WCAG 2 version.
