Use two image-search services, then verify the pages they return. Start with Google Lens to find visually similar images and webpages, submit the same file or URL to TinEye to locate exact and altered copies, and inspect each candidate page for its date, credit, and surrounding context. The oldest result is a lead about when a service found an image—not automatic proof of who created it or when the image first existed.
This workflow works with a downloaded meme, a screenshot, or an image URL. It can uncover cleaner copies, uncropped versions, related edits, and earlier indexed appearances even when the meme itself has been reposted many times.
What reverse-image search can—and cannot—tell you
A reverse-image search starts with pixels instead of words. The service compares your image with material in its index and returns pages or files that match it, resemble it, or contain a modified version. That makes it useful for tracing a meme backward through reposts, finding the unobscured photograph beneath caption text, and locating pages that used the same image.
It does not create a guaranteed chain of custody. A result can show the earliest copy that a particular service found, while an older page may be unindexed, deleted, blocked, or absent from that service’s retained data. Google says image-search operators have indexing and retrieval limits, so a missing result does not establish that an image was never online: Google’s image-search operator documentation. Likewise, a displayed credit, embedded metadata field, or “first found” date can be changed or wrong.

- Strong evidence: the same distinctive image appears on a page whose date and surrounding text can be checked, with a clear credit or an earlier linked source.
- Useful lead: a service reports an early match, a similar image, or a first-seen estimate.
- Not proof by itself: the top search result, a filename, EXIF data, an account bio, or the oldest date visible in one index.
Use the results to build and corroborate a timeline. If you publish a claim, describe it precisely—for example, “the earliest indexed page I could verify” rather than “the original creator”—unless independent evidence supports the stronger statement.
Prepare the best image you have
Keep the untouched file or screenshot before making any edits. A meme may contain a caption, border, watermark, chat interface, or browser chrome that distracts a visual matcher. Save a second working copy for crops, but retain the original so you can repeat the search and explain exactly what was submitted.
- Use the highest-resolution copy available. Do not repeatedly resave a JPEG before searching.
- If you only have a webpage, copy the image URL when possible; otherwise download the displayed file or take a screenshot.
- Record where you obtained it and the date you found it. That is your own observation, not evidence of the image’s creation date.
- Note visible words, logos, usernames, watermarks, and distinctive objects. They become useful text-search clues if image matching stalls.
Do not strip metadata expecting it to reveal a source. Metadata and digital credit information can be edited, and Google cautions that they may be inaccurate. Treat them as clues to check against the page, not as a provenance record.

Step 1: Search the meme with Google Lens
Google’s computer instructions allow three ways to submit an image: upload an image file, drag the file into the search box, or paste an image URL. In a supported browser, you can also right-click an image on a webpage and choose the Google Lens search option. The returned page can include similar images and websites containing the image or a similar image: Google’s “Search with an image on Google” instructions.
Upload a saved file
- Open Google’s image-search interface and choose the Lens image-search control.
- Select the meme file from your computer. If the file is visible in a folder, dragging it into the search box is an equivalent method.
- Wait for the visual results, then open candidate webpages in separate tabs rather than relying only on thumbnail labels.
- Save the useful URLs and note what each page actually contains: the same meme, a clean underlying image, or merely a visually similar subject.
Use an image URL
- Copy the direct URL of the image, not just the page address, when the site exposes one.
- Paste that URL into the Lens search field and run the search.
- Compare the returned pages with results from the downloaded file. A URL submission and a file submission can expose different indexed representations.
Search an image already on a page
When the browser supports it, right-click the displayed image and select the Google Lens search command. This is convenient for a meme encountered online because it avoids downloading a copy first. Still save the page URL and publication details; the right-click result does not prove that the page is the first source.

Read the result types correctly
Separate “exact-looking” matches from visual similarities. A page showing the same captioned meme is different from a page showing the uncropped photograph, a scene with similar colors, or another image of the same person. Open the image preview and then the linked page so you can determine which category applies.
Check About this image
Google’s About this image feature may show when Google first saw the image or a visually similar version and may surface pages it found earlier than other results. Google describes this as information about what it has seen, so use it as an approximate indexing clue, not a creation date or authorship certificate: Google’s “Learn more about an image” guidance.

A first-seen estimate is only as complete as Google’s index and retention, and a visually similar version may not be the same file as your meme.
Step 2: Run the same image through TinEye
TinEye is a useful second index because it is designed to find exact and altered copies, including images that have been cropped, edited, resized, or rotated. Its documentation lists four submission methods: upload, image URL, clipboard paste, and drag-and-drop: TinEye’s “How to use TinEye” guide.
Submit the original file or URL
- Open TinEye and upload the untouched meme, paste its image URL, paste an image from the clipboard, or drag the file onto the page.
- Review each match’s thumbnail and destination URL. Check whether the match is pixel-identical, an edited copy, a crop, or a different image that only resembles yours.
- Open promising destinations and record their visible dates, credits, captions, and links to other sources.
Use TinEye’s sorting controls
TinEye documents sorting by first occurrence found, newest match, most changed version, and largest version. Use oldest or first occurrence to generate an early-use lead, newest to see later spread, most changed to locate substantial edits, and largest to look for a clearer or less compressed copy: TinEye’s FAQ. “First occurrence” means the first occurrence TinEye found; it is not an independently verified original author or creation timestamp.

Do not assume the largest file is the earliest file. Resolution can increase when someone republishes an image, and a later page may host a larger copy than the original. Treat each sort as a different investigative view.

How Google Lens and TinEye complement each other

The services index different material and use different matching methods. Agreement between them strengthens a lead, but it still does not replace checking the linked pages.
Verify the candidate page instead of trusting the thumbnail
Once a result looks promising, open the destination page and inspect it as a source document.
- Identify what is actually embedded. Confirm that the page contains your image, not a thumbnail generated from another file or a merely similar picture.
- Read the surrounding text. Captions, article paragraphs, comments, and image credits can explain whether the page is reporting, quoting, or reposting the material.
- Check the page’s date. Record the displayed publication or upload date and look for signs that the page was updated. A page date is evidence about that page’s publication history, not automatic proof of when the image was created.
- Follow attribution links. A credit may point to an earlier account, portfolio, article, or image host. Open the link and compare the actual file and context rather than copying the credit uncritically.
- Compare versions. Check dimensions, crop boundaries, caption wording, watermarks, and visible edits. A clean photograph can predate a captioned meme, while a caption can be added much later.
- Record uncertainty. If a page is undated, deleted, dynamically generated, or only visible through a search snippet, describe that limitation in your notes.
Google specifically recommends checking evidence and perspectives when evaluating images and warns that credit and digital-source metadata can be modified or inaccurate: Google’s image-context guidance. A search result establishes an indexed appearance. It does not, by itself, establish the first creation, the creator’s identity, or permission to reuse the image.
Find an earlier version when the full meme does not lead anywhere
Remove the overlay text
Make a separate working crop that excludes the caption, border, reaction buttons, and other interface elements, leaving as much of the underlying picture as possible. Submit that crop to both services and compare the results with the full-meme search. TinEye documents matching some cropped and edited copies, but no service promises a result for every crop or meme: TinEye’s FAQ.

Keep the full image as your primary evidence. The crop is a search tactic, not a replacement for the file you are trying to identify. If the crop removes the only distinctive feature, restore more of the original and try again.
Try several meaningful crops
- Crop around a distinctive face, object, logo, landmark, or background detail.
- Crop out a large watermark if it dominates the image, but retain a copy with the watermark for attribution clues.
- For a collage, search each panel separately and then the complete collage.
- For a screenshot, crop away browser tabs, chat controls, and status bars before submitting it.
Change one thing at a time and label each crop. That lets you tell whether a new result came from the image content or from an accidental change in quality.
Use the meme’s text as a second search channel
Image indexes can fail when a meme is heavily compressed, mirrored, overlaid with large lettering, or absent from the service’s index. Copy a distinctive caption or visible phrase into an ordinary web search. Use a short, unusual sequence first; add a second phrase, username, character name, or event detail only if the initial results are too broad.
- Transcribe the exact spelling, punctuation, and unusual capitalization you can see.
- Search the phrase in quotation marks when you need pages containing that wording.
- Try a shorter fragment if reposts changed one or two words.
- Open candidate pages and compare both the text and the underlying pixels.
- Record the page dates separately from the dates supplied by Lens or TinEye.
This text-search method is a practical fallback, not a guaranteed technique. A caption can be rewritten, translated, or added long after the underlying image appeared.
A defensible end-to-end workflow
- Preserve the evidence: save the original file or screenshot, its source URL, and the date you obtained it.
- Run Google Lens: use upload, drag-and-drop, URL paste, or supported-browser right-click search.
- Check context: inspect similar images, linked pages, and About this image when available.
- Run TinEye: submit the same file or URL and review exact and altered matches.
- Sort deliberately: examine first occurrence, newest, most changed, and largest matches for different investigative purposes.
- Open the pages: verify the embedded image, publication date, caption, credit, and any earlier link.
- Search the underlying image: crop away overlays and repeat both image searches if the full meme fails.
- Search distinctive words: use the caption or visible text to locate textual reposts and dated discussions.
- Build a timeline: list each verified page, what version it shows, and what its date actually documents.
- Write the conclusion narrowly: distinguish “earliest page I verified” from “original creator” unless the evidence supports authorship.
Common failure modes and fixes
No results appear
Try the image URL instead of the downloaded file, then reverse the choice. Submit a crop containing the central subject, and remove browser or app controls from screenshots. A no-result page can reflect indexing and retrieval limits; it cannot prove the image never appeared online: Google’s image-search limitations.

Results show only generic similar images
Crop to a distinctive object or face, reduce large text overlays, and search the caption separately. Inspect several result pages rather than stopping at the first visually similar thumbnail.
The oldest result is a repost
Follow its credit and outbound links, search the clean underlying image, and compare caption and crop changes. Report the repost as the earliest page you could verify if no earlier indexed page can be established.
Dates conflict
Separate the date each service first found a match from the date shown on a destination page. Check whether the page date refers to publication, an update, or a user-upload event. Do not merge those different events into one “created on” date.

The credited name looks convincing but cannot be confirmed
Check the credit on the candidate page, then look for corroborating pages or an earlier source. Metadata, filenames, and copied credits can be modified, so keep the claim at the level the pages support.
How to report your finding responsibly
A clear write-up states the method and the evidence boundary. Name the service that supplied an early lead, link to the candidate page, identify the image version shown there, and state the page date exactly as presented. Explain whether the result is an exact copy, an altered copy, or a visual similarity.
Prefer wording such as “TinEye found this page as the earliest match in its results” or “Google’s About this image indicates Google may have first seen a similar version by this date.” Avoid converting either statement into “this is the original” unless the page itself and independent corroboration establish authorship and timing.
If you are deciding whether to reuse the meme, provenance and copyright are separate questions. Finding an earlier page does not grant permission, and finding no source does not make an image free to use. Keep your search notes, URLs, screenshots, and uncertainty so another reader can reproduce the trail.
