If you upgraded Windows recently, first check Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. That built-in rollback is the simplest way to return to the previous Windows version when it is still available. If you need a fresh installation, Microsoft’s public Windows 10 media instructions describe version 22H2; they do not promise downloads of every historic release.
Choose the right way to get an older Windows 10 version
There are two different routes, and they do not do the same thing: use Go back to undo a recent upgrade, or use installation media for a reinstall or clean install. A clean install is not a substitute for the time-limited rollback option.
| Decision | Go back after an upgrade | Install from media |
|---|---|---|
| When it is available | Usually within 10 days of upgrading, if the required rollback files remain. Microsoft Support | Requires suitable installation media. Microsoft’s public Windows 10 download instructions describe version 22H2. Microsoft |
| What happens to files and apps | Personal files are kept; apps and drivers installed after the upgrade may be removed, and settings changes are reversed. Microsoft Support | A clean install can remove data. Back up files before starting. Microsoft and Microsoft Support |
| Which Windows version you get | The Windows version that was installed before the upgrade, if rollback is available. | The release supplied by the media you have; the public download page does not establish access to arbitrary historic releases. Microsoft |
Use Go back after a recent upgrade
Microsoft says, “In most cases, you have 10 days to go back.” The option depends on the rollback files still being on the PC and other conditions being met. If you upgraded recently, check for it before trying a clean installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under recovery options, select Go back if it is available, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Read the prompts and make sure you have any information or files you need before confirming the rollback.
The windows.old and $windows.~bt folders must remain for the option to work. Microsoft also notes that user accounts added after the upgrade may need to be removed, and you may need the USB drive used to perform the upgrade. If Go back is absent, the rollback period may have passed, required files may be missing, or another condition may not be met.

Install Windows 10 from installation media
Use installation media when you need to reinstall Windows or perform a clean installation rather than undo a recent upgrade. Microsoft’s public Windows 10 download page describes the Windows 10 2022 Update, version 22H2, and provides instructions for creating media with the Media Creation Tool or using an ISO. It does not document a public selector for every past Windows 10 feature release.
Create a USB installer
- On a working PC, open Microsoft’s Download Windows 10 page and follow its instructions to create installation media.
- For a USB installer, use a blank flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the media deletes everything on that drive.
- Check the PC’s system requirements and select the matching Windows language and edition. Microsoft directs Enterprise users to a separate Microsoft 365 admin center route.
- When the media is ready, use it to start Windows Setup on the target PC and follow the setup instructions for a reinstall or clean installation.
Back up important files to a separate location before installing. A clean installation can remove data, and the USB drive used to create the installer is erased during media creation. Microsoft recommends backing up before moving between Windows versions; an external storage drive is one way to keep a separate copy.
If you specifically need a historic release
The public Microsoft download instructions establish a route for Windows 10 version 22H2, not a guarantee that any chosen older build is available. If a legacy program or device requires a particular release, check whether your organization’s licensed media or applicable subscription portal provides it. Availability depends on your license and account. Avoid assuming that an unofficial ISO is authentic or safe.

Keep edition and activation aligned
For a reinstall on the same PC that previously activated Windows 10, Microsoft says you can skip entering a product key during setup; Windows can activate later using the device’s digital license. Install the same Windows edition as before. This guidance does not establish activation rights for a different PC, edition, or license.
Know the support consequences before choosing an older release
Windows 10 general support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system continues to run, but general free updates, technical assistance, and security fixes have ended. Installing an older Windows 10 release does not restore that support.
Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11 or enrolling an eligible consumer device in Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU). Microsoft says consumer ESU can provide protection until October 12, 2027. Check Microsoft’s current Windows 10 support guidance for eligibility and program details.
