To return or replace an Amazon purchase made during a sale, open Your Orders, find the order, and choose Return or replace items if it appears. Select the item and a reason, then follow the available options and deadline shown for that order. A sale price does not guarantee an exchange or replacement; Amazon’s order-specific options determine what you can do.
How to start a return or replacement
- Open Your Orders and locate the sale purchase.
- Select Return or replace items, if available.
- Choose the item and the reason for returning it.
- Review the resolution options, return method, instructions, and Return By Date shown for the order. Follow those instructions.
Amazon’s US help guidance says most eligible items can be returned for a refund or replacement/exchange within 30 days of delivery when they are in original or unused condition. The product detail page and Order History show item-specific eligibility. The displayed options for your order are the practical guide; rules can differ outside the US.
Can you exchange an item bought on sale?
Amazon says items purchased with a promotion do not qualify for an exchange. That restriction applies to an exchange; it does not by itself mean the item cannot be returned. If no exchange option is shown, Amazon’s guidance is to return the original and place a new order. Whether a return is available still depends on the item and the options shown for that order.
For exchanges that are eligible, Amazon says the exchange order uses the original shipping speed. The original item must be returned by the order’s Return By Date to avoid being charged for keeping both items; the exchange may ship only after Amazon receives the original. If the replacement costs less, Amazon says it refunds the difference; if it costs more, it charges the difference. Amazon’s exchange guidance also says only orders paid by credit or debit card qualify.

How to replace a damaged or defective item
For a damaged, defective, or broken item, use Your Orders → Return or replace items, select the item and reason, and follow the instructions shown. Check the stock status: Amazon says the replacement order uses the original shipping speed, but timing can vary with availability. A replacement may ship only after the original is returned, and you must return the original by the displayed deadline to avoid a charge for keeping both.
If Amazon does not offer a replacement, its guidance is to return the item and place a new order. Amazon may ask for photos of damage; if so, submit images that clearly show it. For a defective hazardous item, follow the Online Returns Center instructions rather than improvising packaging or shipping arrangements.

What to check before choosing an option
Read the choices and instructions on the order before sending anything back. The relevant details may differ between a refund, replacement, and exchange.

- Available resolution: Confirm which options Amazon actually offers for the item.
- Promotion restriction: A promotional purchase is not eligible for an exchange under Amazon’s exchange guidance; a return and new order may be the alternative.
- Stock and shipping: Check whether a replacement is in stock and whether Amazon requires the original to be returned before it ships.
- Deadline and return method: Note the Return By Date, label, and approved drop-off or shipping instructions. Amazon warns that charges may follow if an item subject to an advanced refund or replacement is late, not in original condition, returned with the wrong label, or left at an unapproved location.
- Price and payment: For an eligible exchange, check any price difference and the payment-method requirements.
How long an Amazon return refund takes
Amazon says refunds can take up to 30 days after it receives and processes a return. That is an upper estimate, not a promise that every refund takes that long; timing depends on the order type, return shipping speed, processing time, and payment method. To check progress, open Your Returns.

The amount and destination can also vary. Amazon describes advanced refunds issued when a carrier first scans a return, refunds routed to Amazon account balance when the original payment method cannot be used, partial refunds for returned items that are used, damaged, or missing parts, and gift refunds issued to the person who returned the gift. Check the confirmation and order status for the outcome that applies to your return.
