After an x402 request times out, do not create a fresh payment signature just because the response is missing. If the relevant scheme supports retrying the same payment, resend the original request with its exact original PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. A timeout means you did not receive a response; it does not prove that verification, service work, or settlement failed.
A new signature may create a distinct authorization, depending on the scheme and implementation, and could expose you to a second payment. Separately, replay protection does not guarantee that a service delivers the paid resource only once. Safe recovery depends on the payment scheme, request binding, settlement handling, and application-level deduplication.
Why signing again after a timeout is risky
An x402 transaction involves a client, a resource server, and sometimes a facilitator. In the default authorization flow, the server verifies payment before performing the requested work, then settles payment directly or through a facilitator. Schemes can define different flows. If a connection fails after any of these steps, the client may not know whether the first attempt was merely verified, already executed, settled, or fully completed. The official x402 repository documents the flow and its participant roles.

Creating a new signature can produce a new signed payload or authorization—for example, where a scheme uses a fresh nonce or transaction. The two authorizations may be distinguishable. That does not mean every second signature will be charged: the outcome depends on the scheme and implementation. But it does mean a fresh signature is not a safe substitute for determining what happened to the first attempt.

There is a second, separate risk: a service might accept repeated submissions and deliver the resource more than once. The x402 Foundation’s exact-scheme specification puts the distinction plainly: “The network primitive prevents double-spend, not double-delivery.” A chain-level replay or double-spend safeguard cannot, by itself, prevent duplicate application work or fulfillment.
What to do when an x402 request times out
- Keep the original attempt intact. Preserve the request and exact signed payment payload, including the original
PAYMENT-SIGNATURE. If retries can outlast the process, persist them so a restart does not force the client to create a new authorization. - Check the scheme and service’s retry rules. If they specify that an uncertain or pending attempt should be resumed with the same payment, resend the same request and original signed header. Do not assume every scheme or service uses the same replay cache, retry behavior, or retention window.
- Use the service’s operation identifier consistently, if supported. Keep the same identifier for retries of one logical operation. Confirm what it binds and what the service does with concurrent or conflicting attempts; an identifier is not a universal x402 guarantee.
- Do not sign a replacement merely because the HTTP response is absent. First follow the documented recovery path for that scheme. If the outcome remains uncertain and the service gives no safe retry procedure, contact its operator rather than submitting a second authorization blindly.
One scheme-specific example is the official Cardano scheme documentation: when settlement is pending, the client repeats the original PAYMENT-SIGNATURE; it must not build another transaction. This is a Cardano rule, not a universal instruction for every x402 scheme or flow.

What clients, servers, and facilitators need to protect
Client: persist and retry the same intent
Represent one logical operation with a stable identity when the implementation supports payment identifiers. Store enough request data and the exact signed payload to retry consistently. Bind retries to the intended payment requirements and request rather than silently changing the amount, asset, network, payee, resource, method, path, query, or body. Follow the implementation’s documented behavior for changed request fields or signatures.

Resource server: deduplicate fulfillment, not just payment
Protect the paid operation itself from duplicate execution and delivery. Where a scheme requires a one-time claim, make that claim atomic before protected work. Ensure concurrent requests cannot both pass a check and then perform the same operation. The exact-scheme specification also calls for atomic settlement deduplication shared across all processes serving /settle when repeated submissions could otherwise appear successful. Retain deduplication state for the full period in which the payment can still land.

Facilitator and settlement layer: define the pending path
Specify what happens when verification, execution, or settlement fails, and what the client should do when the final response is lost. Make clear when settlement counts as final, who sets the confirmation-depth policy, and whether the service performs work before that point. Do not imply that a facilitator alone prevents duplicate signing or duplicate fulfillment.
Solana’s official x402 guidance likewise emphasizes checking expiry and replay status, waiting for the required confirmation level, and preventing a retry from settling or fulfilling the same purchase twice. It distinguishes V2 headers and network names from V1, so use the guidance that matches the deployment in question.

What an idempotency identifier does—and does not—guarantee
An idempotency identifier can help an implementation recognize retries of the same logical operation, but its safety depends on the implementation. Check what it covers, how concurrent attempts are handled, how long its state is retained, and what happens if a response cannot be cached. Also establish what a duplicate receives: a cached response, an in-flight wait, a conflict or error, or another settlement attempt.

For example, FortiSwap’s documentation describes an optional identifier for a logical operation. It says that changing the signed payment under the same identifier conflicts, and that its in-memory idempotency store retains state for 15 minutes. Those are FortiSwap-specific terms, not general x402 behavior; the documented 15-minute window should not be treated as a protocol-wide retry period.

How to evaluate a retry guarantee
Do not rely on the label “idempotent” without checking the mechanics. For the exact scheme, network, and implementation version in use, establish:
- Identity: Is one operation identified by a stable logical-operation ID, the exact signed payload, a canonical payment or transaction ID, or a combination?
- Request binding: Which payment requirements and request fields are covered—such as resource, method, path, query, body, asset, network, amount, and payee?
- Atomicity: Where is the one-time claim made: before resource execution, during settlement, or at both points? Is the state shared across every serving process?
- Duplicate behavior: Does a repeat return a cached result, wait for an in-flight attempt, fail with a conflict, or trigger another settlement attempt?
- Retention: How long is the identifier, replay record, or deduplication key kept? Does that cover the authorization’s validity and the entire period in which the payment could still land?
- Finality and failure recovery: When is settlement considered final, can work occur before then, and what happens after verification, execution, or settlement failure? Do not assume a refund or a cached response is automatic.
Keep version and scheme in view
x402 V2 materials and scheme documents are maintained on a moving branch, and behavior can change. Confirm the exact scheme, network, service, and implementation version before relying on a retry guarantee. The available protocol materials do not establish a stable statistic for losses caused by signing twice, so no loss figure can be inferred from this guidance.
