To restrict YouTube on an iPhone, set an App Limit for the YouTube app, use Downtime with Block at Downtime for scheduled hours, and add YouTube’s website separately if you also want to restrict browser access. These controls cover different paths: an app limit is a time allowance, while a website restriction does not block the app.
Choose the Screen Time control that fits your goal

Set a time limit for the YouTube app
- Open Settings > Screen Time. If Screen Time is not enabled, follow the on-screen prompts to turn it on. For a child managed through Family Sharing, select the child’s name in Screen Time.
- If prompted, turn on App & Website Activity.
- Tap App Limits > Add Limit. Choose the relevant category, open its app list, and select YouTube. Set the daily time allowance and tap to save.
- If you are configuring a child’s iPhone, set a Screen Time passcode and keep it private from the child if the goal is to prevent changes to the restrictions.
An App Limit is a usage allowance, not automatically a permanent block. Apple notes that limits can be ignored when reached, so don’t assume the limit alone will make YouTube inaccessible after the allowance runs out. See Apple’s guidance on Screen Time limits.
Schedule a block during specific hours
- Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime.
- Choose a schedule, such as a recurring set of hours or a custom schedule.
- Turn on Block at Downtime.
With blocking enabled, restricted apps cannot be opened during the scheduled downtime. This is suited to recurring periods such as bedtime; it does not replace a daily usage allowance or create an all-day block. Menu names may vary slightly by iOS version, language, and account setup. Restrict YouTube in Safari separately
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn on the restrictions.
- Tap App Store, Media, Web, & Games > Web Content.
- Choose Limit Adult Websites.
- Under Never Allow, add
youtube.com. Add other relevant YouTube web addresses you want to restrict, if needed.
This setting addresses website access, not the YouTube app. Check the restriction in the browser the user actually uses. Apple documents URL blocking separately from app restrictions in Block apps, app downloads, websites, and purchases on iPhone.

When YouTube’s supervised-account controls help
For an eligible child account, a parent can use YouTube Family Center or Family Link to manage content settings, block specific channels, and disable autoplay. YouTube describes supervised accounts as intended for children under 13 or the applicable age in their country or region; eligibility and available features can vary. Consult YouTube’s parental controls information, its supervised-account FAQs, and instructions for setting up supervised child accounts.
These Google account controls shape YouTube use within that supervised account. They do not replace Screen Time restrictions on the iPhone, particularly for app access or viewing YouTube while signed out.

If YouTube remains accessible
- The app still opens after its daily allowance: An App Limit may be ignorable when reached. Review the Screen Time blocking and passcode settings rather than treating the allowance as an absolute block.
- YouTube works in Safari: Check that Web Content is set to Limit Adult Websites and that
youtube.comis listed under Never Allow. - YouTube works in the app during the intended hours: Check the Downtime schedule and confirm Block at Downtime is on.
- The menu labels differ: Apple and YouTube interfaces may change with iOS version, language, region, or account configuration. Use the linked support instructions for the relevant device and account setup.
