To block mature games on a PS5, create a separate child account, then go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, choose the child, and set Age Level for Games and Apps to the child’s age or lower. There is no universal sexual-content-only switch: use the age restriction together with each game’s rating descriptors, and separately set Communication and User-Generated Content > Restrict if you also want to block chat and player-created material.
What PS5 parental controls can—and cannot—filter
PS5 parental controls work primarily through age levels and the rating categories assigned to games and apps. They are not a keyword filter and they do not provide one global slider labelled “sexual content.” In the United States, the age levels correspond to ESRB categories; selecting a younger age produces a tighter limit. Other countries use their own rating authority and may display different labels or offer different filtering features.
Sexual material therefore requires two decisions. First, choose an age level that blocks the mature rating categories you do not want the child to access. Second, read the individual title’s descriptors before buying or approving it. Descriptors can identify sexual themes, nudity, graphic sexual images, violence, bad language and other content that the broad rating category cannot explain by itself.
Game access and online exposure are separate controls. A child can be blocked from a mature-rated game while still being able to use chat or view player-created media in an age-appropriate game unless you restrict communication and user-generated content as well. Conversely, you can allow a game while disabling its social features.

Prepare the family and child accounts
Create a separate child account
Make the child a member of your PlayStation family rather than letting them use the family manager’s account. Sony’s controls are applied to children in the family, and each child should have a separate account. A shared adult account prevents the console from applying the child-specific age, communication and spending settings reliably.
- Sign in with the adult account that will act as family manager.
- Create or add the child’s PlayStation account to the family.
- Use the child account when the child plays; do not hand over the family manager profile.
- Protect the adult account and the console restriction passcode so the child cannot change the settings.
Parental controls are account-based. If a child signs in with another unrestricted profile, the restrictions on the child’s account do not automatically protect that other profile.
Set the age level that blocks mature games
Use the PS5 menu path
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Family and Parental Controls.
- Open Family Management and select the child.
- Choose Parental Controls.
- Set Age Level for Games and Apps to the child’s age or to a stricter level.
The selected level is the ceiling for games and apps on that child’s account. A lower age level creates a stricter result. The exact rating names depend on the storefront’s country. In the United States, the system uses ESRB categories; elsewhere, follow the rating authority shown for that region.
Understand the age-level effect
ESRB’s PS5 guidance illustrates how the numerical age choice maps to categories. Selecting age 9 automatically blocks games above E for Everyone. Selecting age 11 allows E and E10+ but blocks T for Teen and higher. These examples describe the US ESRB system; they are not a universal conversion for every country.
Choose the age level before a purchase whenever possible. If a title is already installed, the console can still display a block screen when the child tries to launch it. The rating control concerns access, not whether a game file remains on the storage drive.
Screen sexual content with ratings and descriptors
Why the age setting is not enough
Two games in the same broad rating category can contain very different material. A category tells you the general audience level; descriptors provide the specific warnings. For sexual-content screening, look for descriptors such as sexual themes, nudity and graphic sexual images. Also check other descriptors, such as violence or bad language, if those matter to your household.
Before buying a physical or digital PlayStation title, open its rating information in the store or on the product packaging and read every listed descriptor. Sony advises parents to check ratings and descriptors before purchasing PlayStation products. Do the same for downloadable expansions and substantial add-on content, because the add-on may carry its own rating information.

- Keep the child’s age level low enough to block the mature rating categories you have ruled out.
- For any game that remains eligible, inspect its rating descriptors for sexual themes, nudity or graphic sexual images before approving it.
This approach is more precise than trying to infer content from a game’s title, cover art or online comments. It also avoids assuming that every game with the same age category has the same type or intensity of sexual material.
Restrict chat, sharing and player-created content
Turn on the communication restriction
- Return to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child and open Parental Controls.
- Find Communication and User-Generated Content.
- Set it to Restrict.
With this setting restricted, the child cannot use text messaging or voice chat through PlayStation, share the child’s own creations, or view other players’ user-generated content. It can also prevent linking selected third-party communication services and block access to player-created screenshots, video clips, broadcasts and similar material. The exact behavior can depend on the service or game, so check the game’s own communication options after changing the account setting.

Keep this control separate from game ratings
Communication and user-generated content is an independent control. Lowering the game age level does not, by itself, guarantee that text, voice or player media is blocked. If your goal is both “no mature games” and “no unmoderated player material,” configure both settings.
Restricting communication can also remove useful social features, including cooperative voice chat with relatives or classmates. If you later decide to allow a particular feature, make that change deliberately and verify what the game permits rather than assuming that one global switch covers every service.
Choose a preset, then customize the individual controls
Sony supplies preset restriction levels such as Child, Early Teens and Late Teens or Older. A preset changes several areas together, including game age level, communication, online-content filtering, spending and related features. You can then adjust individual settings. As soon as one individual setting is changed, the profile is shown as Customize.
| Control area | Stricter setup | More permissive, selective setup | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game age level | Select a level below the child’s age to block more rating categories. | Select the child’s age-appropriate level, then inspect descriptors title by title. | Which rating authority and labels your storefront uses. |
| Communication and user-generated content | Set to Restrict to disable messaging, voice chat and player-created material. | Allow the feature only when you have reviewed the game and the child’s contacts. | Whether the game also has separate social controls. |
| Online-content filtering | Keep the preset’s stricter online filtering enabled. | Customize only after checking what online material the child can access. | Which online features the selected game exposes. |
| Spending | Set the child’s spending allowance to zero and require adult approval for purchases. | Use a deliberate allowance with purchase notifications and review. | That purchases are made from the child account, not the family manager’s profile. |
| Exceptions | Require approval for each blocked title. | Approve only named games after checking their descriptors. | That an approved title appears in Allowed Games. |
The preset is a starting point, not a substitute for reviewing the individual controls. For example, a family may choose a strict game age level but allow voice chat for a supervised game, or restrict all communication while permitting a higher age level for a particular child. The resulting profile will be labelled Customize.
Approve an appropriate game that was blocked
Use the child’s request
When a restricted title is launched, the child sees a block screen. The child can send a request for access. The family manager or an appointed guardian receives a notification and can approve or deny the title.
Add the title to Allowed Games
Review the game’s rating and descriptors first. If you decide it is appropriate, add it to Allowed Games. Sony supports managing this exception from the PS5, the PlayStation website or the PlayStation Family app. Approval is title-specific; it does not raise the child’s general age level for every other game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open the request notification as the family manager or guardian.
- Read the game’s rating category and descriptors, paying particular attention to sexual themes, nudity and graphic sexual images.
- Choose approve or deny.
- If approved, confirm that the game appears in the child’s Allowed Games list.
- Have the child sign in to the child account and try the title again.
If you later change your mind, remove the title from Allowed Games and test access again while signed in as the child.
Make sure a restriction is actually taking effect
Check the active account
Have the child sign in with the account whose settings you changed. A game launched from the family manager’s account will not demonstrate whether the child restriction works. Also check that the child cannot use a second adult profile or alter the console’s restriction passcode.
Restart the session after changing settings
If a game was already running when you changed a parental-control setting, the new rule may not be applied immediately. Sony advises having the child sign out and back in before testing again. Fully closing the game and starting it from the child account is a useful additional check.

Test each control separately
- Try a title above the selected age level and confirm that the block screen appears.
- Open a game with chat or player media and verify that the restricted functions are unavailable.
- Check a previously approved title in Allowed Games so you know the exception is intentional.
- Review purchase behavior from the child account if spending restrictions are part of your setup.
Testing one feature at a time helps identify whether an unexpected result comes from the game rating, an exception, the active account or a communication setting.
Region, storefront and rating-label differences
Rating bodies and exact age-filter labels vary by country. Sony notes that some age-filtering features are available only in certain countries or regions. The same game can therefore display a different rating symbol or descriptor set in another storefront.
Use the rating authority displayed for the child’s PlayStation account and storefront rather than importing an age number from a different country. If a menu item described in a US guide is missing, check the regional account settings and the local PlayStation support documentation. The core family-management path remains the place to begin, but the available options and wording may differ.
Region differences also matter when you evaluate sexual content. Read the descriptors attached to the local product listing; do not assume that a rating label from another country carries identical criteria.
Recommended setups for common family goals
Block mature games and all unmoderated social content
- Use a separate child account in the family.
- Set Age Level for Games and Apps to the child’s age or lower.
- Set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict.
- Review local rating descriptors before every purchase or approval.
- Set spending to zero if you do not want the child to buy content independently.
- Approve individual exceptions only through Allowed Games.
Allow selected games but keep social features off
Choose an age level that fits the child, leave communication and user-generated content restricted, and approve a suitable title individually when the age filter blocks it. This preserves the social restriction without changing the rating limit for the rest of the library.

Allow supervised communication
If you decide that a child may use chat in a particular game, first review the game’s communication tools and contacts. Change the communication setting deliberately, test the result from the child account, and remember that allowing communication can also expose the child to messages, voice chat, broadcasts or other player-created material depending on the service.
Troubleshoot unexpected access or an unwanted block
A mature game still launches
- Confirm that the child is not using an adult or family-manager account.
- Check whether the title was previously approved in Allowed Games.
- Verify the selected age level under the child’s profile, not another family member’s profile.
- Close the game and have the child sign out and back in after any change.
- Check the storefront region and the rating authority used for that account.
Chat or player media is still visible
- Confirm that Communication and User-Generated Content is set to Restrict.
- Check whether the child is signed in elsewhere or using a game-specific account.
- Review the game’s own social settings; the PS5 account rule may not describe every in-game feature.
- Restart the game after changing the setting.
An appropriate game is blocked
Read the title’s rating and descriptors, then use the request workflow and add the game to Allowed Games if you approve it. Do not raise the global age level solely to unlock one title unless you also accept access to every other title in the newly permitted categories.
Final checklist before handing over the controller
- The child has a separate account in the family.
- The family manager’s sign-in and restriction passcode are protected.
- Age Level for Games and Apps is set to the intended level.
- Rating descriptors have been checked for sexual themes, nudity and graphic sexual images.
- Communication and User-Generated Content is set to the intended value.
- Online-content filtering and spending settings match your household rules.
- Any exception is listed explicitly in Allowed Games.
- The child has signed out and back in after changes, and a test was performed from the child account.
The dependable way to limit mature and sexual content is layered control: use the PS5 age level to block rating categories, read each game’s descriptors for specific sexual-content warnings, and independently restrict communication and user-generated content when you do not want player messages or media. Review the settings whenever the child’s account, country storefront or game library changes.
