Use a child Microsoft account in your family group, set an age ceiling under Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members, and add individual game blocks in the Xbox Family Settings app. For sexual content on the web, enable Microsoft Family Safety web and search filters and require Microsoft Edge on the console. Protect the adult account with a passkey, then add communication, purchase, activity, and screen-time limits as a second layer.
These controls are rating- and account-based: they can restrict games, apps, and websites above your chosen threshold, but they cannot reliably identify every mature scene, user-created item, or message. Configure social and communication permissions as well as content filters.
What Xbox family settings can and cannot block
Xbox Series X|S family settings combine Microsoft Family Safety, the Xbox Family Settings app, and console privacy controls. A family organizer can apply an age-based ceiling to games and apps, block a specific title, filter web and search results, approve purchases, limit play time, and control multiplayer and messaging.
Microsoft describes content filters as an effective way to prevent access to mature web content, apps, and games. The filter is not a scene-by-scene content scanner. A game rated below your ceiling can still contain themes you consider unsuitable, and user-generated chat or shared content can bypass a simple game-rating rule. Treat ratings as the first barrier and communication controls as the second.

Age ratings are the broad filter
The age setting limits games and apps above the selected rating. Microsoft’s console example shows how the threshold works: an age setting of 11 permits E10+ games but does not permit Teen (T) or Mature (M) games. The exact available ratings depend on the child’s region and the rating system applied to the account.
Individual blocks handle exceptions
The Xbox Family Settings app can block one title even when its rating would otherwise be allowed. It can also allow a particular title without raising the child’s overall age ceiling. This is the practical way to handle a single game that you have reviewed—or a single game you do not want available—without changing every other game.
Web filtering is separate
Game and app restrictions do not automatically make the web safe. Microsoft Family Safety web and search filters apply when the child uses Microsoft Edge on Xbox. Microsoft states that other commonly used browsers are blocked for this filtering to work, so the browser requirement is part of the setup, not an optional preference.

Before you start: accounts and responsibilities
Use a child Microsoft account
Family controls are applied to an account, not merely to a console. Create or verify a separate Microsoft account for the child and add it to your family group. Do not let the child play through the adult organizer profile; restrictions attached to the child account will not protect an unrestricted adult profile.

Make the adult an organizer
Go to account.microsoft.com/family, sign in with the adult Microsoft account, and confirm that the adult is the family organizer. Microsoft defines a family group as people connected through Family Safety on Windows, Xbox, or mobile devices. Organizers can add or remove members and manage limits and permissions.
Protect the organizer account
Set an adult-account passkey or PIN and sign out of the adult profile after changing settings. ESRB recommends a six-digit passkey to protect the chosen restrictions. If the child knows the adult account password or can use an unlocked organizer profile, any console restriction can be undone.
Set an age limit on Xbox Series X|S
- Open the family controls. On the Xbox console, open Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members.
- Select the child. Choose the child’s Microsoft account, not the adult organizer account.
- Open the restriction page. Select Privacy & online safety or Content restrictions. Microsoft and ESRB note that wording can vary by console software version.
- Set the content ceiling. Turn on the inappropriate-content filter and choose Allow content suitable for age, or the equivalent age control. Set it to the child’s actual age or to a lower threshold if you want a stricter rule.
- Test the result. Sign in as the child and try a game above the selected rating. The title should be unavailable or require adult approval. Then test an allowed title to confirm that the account is being restricted rather than the entire console.
The setting follows the child account across supported Xbox and Windows devices. If the child uses another console, verify that the same account is signed in and that the family group remains intact.

Block an individual title
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app with the organizer account.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Open the child’s activity or app-and-game list.
- Choose the game and select the block option.
- Have the child sign out and back in, or restart the game, so the new permission is refreshed.
ESRB states that the app can individually allow or block titles regardless of their rating. That means you can keep a lower age ceiling while approving one game you have checked, or block a game whose themes, online features, or community content do not fit your household rules.

When an exception is appropriate
- Approve one title: Use an individual allow decision rather than raising the whole age ceiling.
- Block one title: Use an individual block when the rating is technically acceptable but the content or online behavior is not.
- Review updates: Recheck an exception after major game updates, downloadable expansions, or changes to multiplayer features.
Filter sexual and mature web content
- Open Microsoft Family Safety for the child’s account.
- Turn on web and search filters.
- Require Microsoft Edge for browsing on Xbox.
- Confirm that other commonly used browsers are blocked or unavailable to the child account.
- Test searches and direct website addresses while signed in as the child.
The web filter is aimed at mature web content and search results; it is not a replacement for supervision. Shared links in messages, images uploaded by users, and newly published pages may not be classified immediately. Keep communication controls enabled and explain what the child should do when a blocked page or unexpected message appears.
Add the controls that ratings do not cover
Screen time and schedules
Family Safety supports daily schedules and per-app or per-game limits across Xbox and Windows. Use a schedule for the hours when the child may play, then use a per-game limit when one title is taking too much of the available time. These are separate from content ratings: a permitted game can still be limited by time.
Purchases and downloadable content
Turn on Needs adult approval to buy things, also called Ask a Parent. The organizer can approve or deny requests for games, add-ons, subscriptions, and other Microsoft Store purchases. This prevents a child from obtaining a new mature title or expansion simply because it was not present when you configured the age ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVoice, text, and invitations
In Privacy & online safety, set voice chat, text messages, game invites, clubs, broadcasting, and friend controls to Everyone, Friends, or Block according to the child’s age and your family’s rules. A mature game filter does not stop an otherwise permitted player from receiving explicit language, sexual messages, or unwanted invitations from other users.

Multiplayer and cross-network play
Review multiplayer and cross-network play separately. Set them to allow only the level of contact you are comfortable supervising. Cross-network play can expose a child to players and moderation systems outside Xbox, so a stricter setting may be appropriate for younger children.
Activity reporting
Enable activity reporting so the organizer can see the child’s Xbox and Windows app and game activity. Reports help you spot a title that was not expected, repeated attempts to open blocked content, or play outside the agreed schedule. Activity reporting is visibility, not a content filter; it does not replace the age ceiling or individual blocks.
Which configuration fits your household?
| Configuration | Coverage | Scope | Exceptions | Social exposure | Operational burden |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Age ceiling only | Broad rating-based restriction | Games and apps | Does not identify a particular title unless you add a block | Unchanged unless privacy settings are edited | Low; configure on the console |
| Age ceiling plus individual title rules | Broad filter plus precise exceptions | Games and apps | Approve or block individual titles in the Family Settings app | Unchanged unless communication settings are edited | Moderate; review the app-and-game list |
| Web and search filtering | Mature websites and searches | Microsoft Edge on Xbox | Browser requirement; other commonly used browsers are blocked for filtering to work | Does not control game chat or messages | Moderate; manage in Family Safety and test as the child |
| Full family configuration | Games, apps, web, purchases, time, activity, and social features | Xbox and supported Windows activity | Per-title decisions plus organizer approvals | Voice, text, invites, multiplayer, clubs, broadcasting, and friends can be limited | Highest; review reports and requests regularly |
Troubleshooting common failures
A mature game still launches
- Check that the child is signed into the restricted account, not an adult profile.
- Confirm the adult account is the family organizer and that the child account appears in the family group.
- Reopen Settings > Account > Family settings > Manage family members and verify the age ceiling.
- Sign out of the child account, restart the console, and test again.
- Look for an individual allow rule in the Family Settings app; an explicit exception can override the broad rating decision.
Web filters do not block sexual content
- Verify that Microsoft Family Safety web and search filters are on for the child account.
- Make sure the child is using Microsoft Edge on Xbox.
- Check whether another browser is installed or accessible; Microsoft’s filtering requires Edge and blocks other commonly used browsers for this purpose.
- Test while signed in as the child, because an organizer account is not subject to the child’s web restrictions.
The child changes the settings
- Remove the child’s access to the adult organizer account.
- Set or change the adult passkey/PIN, using a code the child cannot guess.
- Sign out of the organizer profile after every configuration change.
- Do not share the adult Microsoft account password or leave the account signed in on the console.
A blocked child cannot use an approved game
- Confirm the title was allowed for the correct child profile in the Family Settings app.
- Check whether the game is being launched through a different account.
- Review the game’s rating and any new downloadable content; an exception may need to be renewed after a change.
- Restart the console and sign in again to refresh permissions.
Review the setup as your child grows
Family controls are not a one-time installation. Revisit the age ceiling when the child reaches a new age category, review individual exceptions after updates, and inspect activity reports and purchase requests. Recheck voice, text, multiplayer, cross-network play, clubs, broadcasting, and friend settings whenever the child joins a new game or starts communicating with new players.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a short family rule alongside the technical settings: which ratings are allowed, whether chat is limited to known friends, who approves purchases, and how the child reports an unexpected message or page. The settings reduce exposure; the rule and ongoing review address content that ratings and automated filters cannot classify perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I block only Mature-rated games while allowing Teen games?
Yes. Set the child’s allowed age to the level that includes Teen titles but excludes Mature titles, then test the child account. Rating names and thresholds can vary by region.
Can I approve one game without unlocking every mature game?
Yes. Keep the lower age ceiling and use the Xbox Family Settings app to allow that individual title for the child.
Will Xbox family settings block sexual messages from other players?
Not by themselves. Configure voice, text, invites, multiplayer, clubs, broadcasting, and friend permissions under Privacy & online safety.

Microsoft Family Safety web and search filtering on Xbox requires Microsoft Edge; Microsoft says other commonly used browsers are blocked for this filtering to work.
Do these settings apply to Windows as well as Xbox?
Family Safety app and game filters, schedules, per-app limits, and activity reporting can cover supported Windows and Xbox activity when the child uses the same Microsoft family account.
The Bottom Line
For the strongest practical setup, combine an age ceiling with individual title rules, Microsoft Edge web filtering, purchase approval, communication limits, activity reporting, and a protected adult passkey. This layered approach restricts mature games and sexual web content without requiring you to open every other game or app.
