The safest default is to remove the GPU server’s unnecessary public exposure and let authorized users reach it through a private mesh VPN, a private cloud subnet, an identity-aware forwarding service, or a site-to-site VPN. Then enforce separate rules for network reachability, cloud and host firewalls, SSH, and each GPU application. A private connection provides a path to the server; it does not by itself start SSH or an inference service, nor does it grant permission to use one.

What “restricted access” should mean

Restricting a GPU server is not one setting. It is a layered design that answers four different questions:

  • Exposure: Does the host have a public IP address or accept traffic from the public internet?
  • Reachability: Which users, devices, networks, or intermediary hosts can route traffic to it?
  • Network authorization: Which source identities may connect to which destination ports?
  • Service authorization: After a connection reaches a port, which SSH users, API clients, notebooks, schedulers, or administrators may use the service?

These layers are independent. Tailscale’s connection documentation states that its network creates connectivity between devices, but a specific service such as SSH or a web server must still be running on the destination. Its SSH documentation also separates general network access from SSH permission. The same distinction applies to Jupyter, inference APIs, monitoring agents, and cluster schedulers.

For AI infrastructure, private access is more than a convenience. NVIDIA’s Requirements for AI Clouds v2.2 says direct access from the public internet or general corporate networks must be blocked and that access should occur only through a hardened bastion (jumphost). That requirement is a useful baseline even when your deployment uses a private VPN instead of a bastion.

Choose the private-access architecture

Select the design that matches where the GPU host lives, how users connect, and how much infrastructure your team can operate. The following approaches are all valid; none is universally best.

Approach Appropriate when Advantages Limits and questions
Managed private mesh VPN Users and hosts span offices, cloud providers, laboratories, or home networks Identity and device policy can limit who reaches each server and port without exposing public SSH on the GPU host Every client or routed network needs setup; host firewall and SSH or application authorization remain necessary
Cloud private subnet plus bastion The GPU VM is in one cloud network and centralized ingress is acceptable The GPU VM can have no public IP; firewall rules can allow SSH only from the bastion The bastion becomes a high-value, externally reachable component that must be hardened, monitored, patched, and tightly restricted
Identity-aware TCP forwarding Cloud-native identity controls are preferred and supported by the provider Users reach an internal-only VM through an authenticated intermediary rather than a public address Cloud identity permissions and firewall rules must be configured correctly; the method is provider-specific
Site-to-site or client VPN into a private subnet An office, lab, or cloud network is already managed as a private network Private routing reaches GPU hosts without exposing public SSH VPN membership does not replace host or service authorization; confirm routes, DNS, allowed ports, and user or device policy

Compare designs using these practical questions: Is the GPU host publicly exposed? Can policy distinguish individual users, groups, and devices? Can it restrict individual ports? How quickly can access be revoked? Are connection and authorization events auditable? Must you operate a bastion or VPN gateway? Does the design fit the existing cloud or on-premises network? What operational work will updates, key rotation, monitoring, and incident response require?

  • Administration: SSH, remote console, configuration management, and emergency access.
  • Interactive development: Jupyter or another notebook service, shell environments, and development dashboards.
  • Inference: Model APIs, gateways, and internal health endpoints.
  • Training: Worker-to-controller traffic, cluster control planes, job submission, and distributed-training communication.
  • Operations: Monitoring, metrics, logs, alerting, and backup agents.
  • Storage and orchestration: Object-storage endpoints, schedulers, container orchestration APIs, and image registries.

For each item, record the destination host, protocol, port, expected source, user or service identity, and whether access is continuous or temporary. If a service is not required, do not expose it through the VPN, bastion, or firewall.

Option 1: Restrict a GPU host with a private mesh VPN

Use identity and device policy, not a shared network password

A private mesh can connect users and GPU servers across otherwise unrelated networks. The security value comes from policy: identify the user or device, restrict the destination, and grant only the ports needed for the task. Avoid treating “connected to the VPN” as equivalent to “trusted for every service.”

Tailscale’s GPU infrastructure guidance models separate groups of resources with tags, such as inference servers and training nodes. A team may be allowed to reach inference servers broadly while training-cluster access is limited to SSH and a monitoring port. Its policy model is deny-by-default: “Grants are deny-by-default: if no grant explicitly permits a source-destination pair, Tailscale blocks the traffic.”

Build the policy around roles and workloads

  • Administrators: Permit SSH to designated GPU hosts, preferably only from managed devices.
  • ML engineers: Permit notebook or job-submission services only on the hosts and ports they need.
  • Inference clients: Permit the inference API but not SSH or the training control plane.
  • Monitoring: Permit the monitoring system to reach metrics endpoints without granting interactive shell access.
  • Training workers: Permit only the east-west ports required by the distributed-training system.

Use separate resource groups or tags for these roles rather than one rule that exposes every GPU host to every VPN member. Keep the policy understandable enough that an administrator can determine why a connection is allowed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the host behind the mesh

  1. Install and enroll the VPN client on the GPU host and on approved user or administrative devices.
  2. Assign the host to the appropriate workload group, such as inference or training.
  3. Write deny-by-default grants for source identity, destination group, and port.
  4. Keep public ingress disabled unless a documented exception requires it.
  5. Set the host firewall to accept the same narrow set of VPN-originated ports; do not rely on the mesh policy alone.
  6. Configure SSH keys, users, or an SSH policy separately from the network grant.
  7. Authenticate each application independently, including notebooks, APIs, dashboards, and schedulers.

Test both sides of the policy. An authorized engineer should reach the approved service, while the same engineer should be denied from an unapproved port. An unauthorized device should fail even if it can discover the server’s private address.

Option 2: Put the GPU VM in a private subnet behind a bastion

Use a two-hop topology

In a cloud deployment, place the GPU VM in a private subnet without a public IP. Expose only the bastion’s required ingress, then allow the GPU VM’s firewall or security group to accept SSH only from the bastion’s private address or security-group identity. Google Cloud describes a bastion host as “an external facing point of entry into a network containing private network instances.”

The bastion should be an access broker, not a general-purpose workstation. Keep it small, patched, monitored, and limited to forwarding or controlled administration. Google Cloud guidance recommends restricting the bastion’s source CIDR ranges and using SSH forwarding rather than storing target private keys on the bastion.

Harden the bastion

  • Allow inbound access only from approved administrative networks or identities.
  • Permit only the forwarding or management protocols that are required.
  • Do not allow the bastion to become a transit point to every private subnet unless that is explicitly needed.
  • Use short-lived or centrally managed credentials and remove access promptly when a person, device, or project changes.
  • Log authentication, forwarding sessions, source addresses, destination hosts, and administrative changes.
  • Apply operating-system updates and continuously monitor the host as an internet-facing component.

Restrict the target separately

The private GPU VM still needs its own controls. Its cloud firewall or security group should allow SSH only from the bastion and permit application or monitoring ports only from their documented private sources. A private subnet is not a permission boundary by itself: another workload in that subnet may otherwise be able to probe the GPU host.

Avoid giving the bastion persistent target private keys merely for convenience. Use forwarding, an identity-aware mechanism, or another centrally controlled method that keeps credentials off the intermediary.

Option 3: Use identity-aware forwarding for an internal-only VM

Google Cloud documents Identity-Aware Proxy TCP forwarding as an intermediary for connecting to internal-only VMs. This model can be useful when your organization wants cloud identity, access policy, and audit records to govern administrative connections without assigning a public IP to the GPU VM.

Configure the cloud identity permissions and the VM firewall together. The forwarding service must be authorized to reach the target, and the target must allow the forwarded connection on the required port. If either layer is missing, the user may authenticate successfully but still fail to connect.

This is a provider-specific pattern. If your GPU host is outside that cloud, use the equivalent identity-aware service only after confirming its source identity, audit coverage, supported protocols, and private-routing behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 4: Connect through a site-to-site or client VPN

A site-to-site VPN can extend an existing office, laboratory, or cloud network to the GPU subnet. A client VPN can give individual managed devices private routes to the same subnet. Both approaches remove the need for a public SSH endpoint, but neither replaces authorization on the host.

Verify four things before declaring the connection complete:

  • Routes: The client or remote site has a route to the GPU subnet, and return traffic follows the correct path.
  • DNS: Internal names resolve to private addresses and do not accidentally return a public endpoint.
  • Port policy: The VPN gateway, cloud firewall, security group, and host firewall agree on the specific ports that are allowed.
  • Identity policy: Membership in the VPN is tied to an approved user or device and can be revoked independently of network routing.

Apply controls in separate layers

1. Public exposure and cloud perimeter

Remove an unnecessary public IP and delete broad public ingress rules. If a public address is required for a gateway or bastion, restrict its source ranges and exposed ports. AWS EC2 security guidance recommends security groups and private-subnet access patterns; Google Cloud likewise describes firewall rules that limit traffic to specified sources and ports.

2. Private-network authorization

Grant access by user, device, group, host, and port. Prefer deny-by-default rules. A user who may administer one training node should not automatically reach every inference node, storage system, or monitoring endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Host firewall

Mirror the intended policy on the operating system. Allow SSH only from the private-network range, bastion, or forwarding mechanism that should originate it. Permit application and monitoring ports only from their known sources. Keep an emergency recovery path documented and protected rather than leaving a broad rule permanently enabled.

4. SSH authorization

Use individual accounts or centrally managed identities, not a shared administrator login. Restrict which users may log in, require strong keys or the organization’s approved authentication method, and remove stale access. A private route does not authenticate an SSH user.

5. Application authentication

Protect Jupyter, inference APIs, dashboards, schedulers, and internal control planes with their own authentication and authorization. Bind services to private interfaces where practical. A service listening on a private address is still vulnerable to any private-network user who can reach it unless the application checks identity.

Implementation sequence

  1. Document entry points. List SSH, notebooks, inference APIs, monitoring, schedulers, storage paths, and administrative interfaces. Record required sources and ports.
  2. Choose one private path. Select a managed mesh, private subnet with bastion, identity-aware forwarding, or site-to-site or client VPN based on topology and operating capacity.
  3. Remove unnecessary public access. Delete the GPU VM’s public IP or public firewall rules where practical. If a bastion remains public, restrict its source CIDRs and ports.
  4. Create least-privilege network policy. Start with deny-by-default grants and add only the source-to-destination pairs required for each role and workload.
  5. Configure cloud controls. Update security groups, network firewalls, routes, and subnet rules. Permit target SSH only from the approved bastion or forwarding path.
  6. Configure the host firewall. Match the cloud and private-network policy, including monitoring and application ports.
  7. Configure SSH and applications. Apply user authorization, key or identity controls, notebook authentication, API credentials, and scheduler permissions independently.
  8. Test approved and denied paths. Test from an authorized device, an unauthorized device, an unapproved identity, and an unapproved port. Confirm that the expected service is actually running.
  9. Verify logging and revocation. Confirm that connection attempts, policy decisions, bastion sessions, and host logins are visible. Revoke a test user or device and verify that access stops at every relevant layer.
  10. Record recovery procedures. Document how to regain access if the VPN, bastion, identity provider, or firewall policy fails, without leaving a permanent public exception.

Test the design before relying on it

Test Expected result If it fails
Approved user to approved SSH port Connection reaches the host and SSH authenticates the user Check private route, network grant, cloud firewall, host firewall, and SSH authorization in that order
Approved user to an unapproved port Network policy or firewall blocks the connection Look for an overly broad grant, security-group rule, or host-firewall rule
Unauthorized device to the GPU host No route or no authorized connection Check device enrollment, VPN identity policy, subnet routes, and public ingress
Authorized user to a stopped service Network path works but the application connection fails Start or repair the destination service; VPN connectivity cannot start it automatically
Revoked user or device Previously allowed connections are denied Check cached sessions, identity-provider revocation, VPN policy, bastion credentials, and local accounts
Monitoring source to metrics port Metrics work without interactive SSH access Separate the monitoring grant from administrative grants and inspect both firewall layers

Perform tests from outside the approved network as well as inside it. Review logs while testing so you can associate a denial with the layer that enforced it. The documented access-control models support this layered test plan, but the sources do not report a hands-on deployment or benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design around GPU workload differences

Inference servers

Inference clients usually need an API and health endpoint, not shell access. Put the API behind the private network or identity-aware path, restrict callers to the application’s source group, and keep administrative ports available only to operators.

Training clusters

Training can require more than SSH: job submission, worker coordination, monitoring, and distributed-training traffic may use separate channels. Tailscale’s GPU example distinguishes training-cluster access from broader inference access and limits training users to SSH and a monitoring port in its sample policy. Adapt that principle to the actual scheduler and framework rather than opening an entire subnet.

Interactive notebooks

Notebooks are powerful administrative surfaces because they can execute code with GPU-host permissions. Keep them on private interfaces, restrict access to the engineers who need them, require notebook-level authentication, and avoid exposing notebook ports directly to the public internet.

Monitoring and operations

Monitoring should be a separate source identity. Give the monitoring system access to metrics and health endpoints without granting SSH. Alert on new public firewall rules, unexpected listeners, failed authentication, bastion changes, and policy edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and corrective actions

  • “The VPN makes the server secure.” It only supplies a network path. Add network grants, firewalls, SSH policy, and application authentication.
  • Leaving a public IP “temporarily.” Remove it or restrict ingress as soon as private access works; temporary exceptions tend to become permanent.
  • Allowing an entire VPN subnet. Replace broad subnet trust with user, device, host, and port-specific grants.
  • Opening only port 22. Inventory notebooks, inference, schedulers, monitoring, and storage-related services before deciding the minimum set.
  • Putting target keys on the bastion. Use controlled forwarding or centrally managed credentials instead of copying long-lived private keys to an intermediary.
  • Assuming a reachable port means a working service. Confirm that SSH, the API, notebook server, or monitoring agent is installed, listening, and authorized.
  • Forgetting east-west traffic. A private subnet can still permit unwanted host-to-host probing unless security groups and host firewalls restrict lateral movement.
  • Failing to test revocation. Access control is incomplete until a removed user or device actually loses access and existing sessions are handled according to policy.

Ongoing operations

Review the access model whenever a GPU host, workload, team, cloud network, or monitoring system changes. Remove unused grants and public rules, rotate or revoke credentials, patch bastions and VPN gateways, and inspect logs for unexpected sources or ports. Keep a current diagram showing the private route, intermediary hosts, firewall boundaries, and service owners.

For regulated or high-value workloads, retain evidence of who approved each grant, when it expires, which device was used, and which destination port was reached. Short-lived access for incident response or maintenance is safer than a standing administrator rule. Oracle’s private-subnet bastion guidance similarly describes restricted, time-limited access to instances without public IPs.

Security decision checklist

  • The GPU host has no unnecessary public IP or public ingress.
  • Every required service and port has a named owner and documented source.
  • Private-network policy is deny-by-default and scoped by identity, device, destination, and port.
  • Cloud firewalls or security groups and host firewalls enforce the same intent.
  • SSH and application authentication are configured independently of VPN membership.
  • Bastions, VPN gateways, or forwarding services are hardened, patched, monitored, and restricted.
  • Approved, denied, stopped-service, and revoked-access tests have all been performed.
  • Logs show connection attempts, policy decisions, authentication, and administrative changes.
  • A documented recovery path exists without a permanent public-access exception.
