There is no single switch that blocks every AI chatbot on every account, browser, app and device. The reliable approach is layered: identify every route your child uses, apply each service’s own controls, supervise the child’s account and device where supported, and agree clear family rules. Settings, age eligibility and regional availability change, so verify the current instructions before relying on them.
Start with an access inventory
A child can reach an AI chatbot through more than a dedicated app. Before changing settings, list the accounts, devices and entry points involved. Ask your child to show you how they use chatbots rather than assuming the only route is an app on their phone.
- Standalone mobile apps, including services used for homework, writing, images or companionship.
- Mobile and desktop browsers, where an app block may have no effect.
- School, work or other managed accounts that have different age rules and administrators.
- A shared family tablet, phone, computer, smart speaker or game console.
- Chatbots embedded in social, messaging or search apps.
- A second personal account, guest profile or another device.
Google’s documentation distinguishes Gemini app access for supervised accounts from other devices and functions. That distinction is a useful warning: a control in one account or app should not be described as a universal block.

Restrict ChatGPT access
Link the parent and teen accounts
- The parent or guardian sends an invitation to link accounts.
- The teen accepts the invitation from their ChatGPT account.
- On the parent account, open Settings > Parental controls and review the settings shown for that linked account.
OpenAI’s “Managing parental controls in ChatGPT” help guidance describes controls for reducing sensitive content and managing certain features and data use. The exact choices can change as the service updates them.

Use Quiet hours when you need a scheduled block
Quiet hours prevents ChatGPT use during the schedule you set. This is the ChatGPT control that functions as a time-based access block. Pick a schedule that matches your household routine, check the time zone and save it on the parent account. Test it on the teen’s account during a short period before relying on it for an important boundary.
Do not confuse Study hours with blocking
Study hours is different. During its schedule, eligible new conversations start in study mode, but ChatGPT remains accessible. The setting does not apply to GPT and Project conversations. Use it when you want a learning-oriented starting experience, not when you need to prevent use.
Understand privacy and unlinking
Linking does not give a parent a transcript, a live view of activity or a way to inspect the teen’s chats. Either the parent or teen can unlink the accounts. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and the linked controls and safety notifications end. OpenAI notes that changes may not take effect immediately and that some changes apply only to new conversations, so allow time and verify the result.

What “ChatGPT for Teens” means
OpenAI says eligible accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 are automatically placed in a teen experience with learning-focused tools, reminders and age-appropriate protections. This is not a perfect age check and is not a parent-controlled master block. Treat the teen experience as an additional safety layer, not proof that every account or route is covered.

Turn Gemini Apps on or off with Family Link
Check eligibility first
Google’s “Guide your child’s Gemini Apps experience” applies to eligible supervised child accounts. Eligibility and rollout vary by country and feature. The reviewed English guidance says Gemini Apps are unavailable for supervised accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Separate functions can have their own minimum-age requirements, and the child’s device and language can affect availability.
Use the current Family Link path
- Open Family Link and select the child.
- Choose Controls > Gemini > Gemini Apps.
- Switch Gemini Apps access on or off.
Older Family Link versions may place the option under Content restrictions instead. Google says a change can take several hours to take effect. After saving, check the child’s device and any browser session rather than assuming the change was immediate.
Account supervision is broader than the Gemini switch
Google account supervision can include parental-consent and age requirements that depend on the child’s country and minimum age. Those account-level controls and the Gemini Apps setting are related but not interchangeable: turning Gemini Apps off does not automatically block every other chatbot, and supervising an account does not guarantee that an independently signed-in service is disabled.

Character.AI’s Safety Center describes a more conservative response classifier for under-18 users, input filtering and a narrower set of searchable characters. A separate announcement, “Important Changes for Teens on Character.ai,” updated October 29, 2025, describes work on age assurance and a changed under-18 experience.

Those materials do not establish a parent-operated master shutoff. Because the under-18 design and age-assurance measures are evolving, open the service’s current help and account settings with your child and verify what is active in your region. Do not promise that the teen filters block every unsafe response or that they prevent access through another account.
Check other apps, accounts and embedded bots
The Children’s Commissioner for England’s guide for parents and carers, current at its December 2025 publication, lists examples including ChatGPT, Copilot, Snapchat MyAI, Gauth, Gemini, Character AI and Sora. It warns that the list can change and that some services do not verify the age a user enters. Use it as a conversation and inventory checklist, not as a current universal directory or a guarantee that an age gate works.
For every additional service, identify whether it offers an account-level pause, a supervised-account setting, a time schedule, content filtering or no meaningful parent control. Check both the app and the website. If the chatbot is embedded in another product, apply that product’s account and family settings as well as the chatbot’s own settings.
Add device and account supervision without overpromising
Device controls can reduce casual access, but the reviewed guidance does not establish one iOS, Android, computer or router configuration that reliably blocks every chatbot. An app limit may leave the website available; a browser restriction may not cover a second browser or a school-managed account.

- Use the child’s operating-system family settings to review installed apps, browser access, account changes and new-app approvals.
- Keep the child’s primary account supervised where the platform supports it, and review signed-in accounts on shared devices.
- Check browser profiles, private browsing availability and saved sessions.
- Review smart speakers, tablets and other shared devices that may accept voice requests.
- Ask the school or employer which managed accounts and AI services are available, because those administrators may control access separately.
Verify instructions against the exact device model and operating-system version. Do not claim that a particular limit blocks web access unless the current operating-system documentation explicitly says so.
Set family rules that technology controls cannot provide
Technical settings work better when everyone understands the boundaries. Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, said in OpenAI’s September 29, 2025 parental-controls announcement: “Parental controls are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to keeping teens safe online, though—they work best when combined with ongoing conversations about responsible AI use, clear family rules about technology, and active involvement in understanding what their teen is doing online.”
Agree on permitted uses
- List which services may be used and whether schoolwork, coding, translation, creative writing or entertainment is allowed.
- Decide when use is acceptable, including homework periods, overnight hours and family time.
- Set a rule that a child asks before creating a new account or using a new chatbot.
- Explain whether AI-generated work must be disclosed to a teacher and how the child should check answers.
Protect personal information
- Do not enter a full name with identifying details, home address, phone number, passwords, school records, medical information or private family disputes.
- Remove photos, recordings and documents that contain another person’s information unless there is a clear, approved reason to upload them.
- Use privacy and data-use settings available in the service, but do not treat a setting as a promise that an AI system is a confidential professional.
Plan for disturbing or manipulative replies
Tell the child to stop the conversation and show an adult if a chatbot gives frightening advice, asks for secrecy, pressures them to move to another app, requests intimate material or presents itself as a friend or therapist. Explain that chatbots generate responses; they are not people and are not confidential mental-health or medical professionals. Google’s Gemini parent guidance specifically encourages parents to explain that Gemini is an AI tool, not a person to confide in, and acknowledges that its filters are imperfect.

Age gates, supervised accounts and content filters reduce some exposure but are not universal guarantees. Common Sense Media’s 2026 assessment says its testers found that safeguards could be circumvented and recommends that minors not use AI for companionship or mental-health support. The Associated Press reported on October 7, 2026 that OpenAI disputed the assessment and summarized the company’s criticism of the testing and its ChatGPT for Teens conclusions. These are competing positions: present Common Sense Media’s findings as its assessment and OpenAI’s response as the company’s stated objection, not as an undisputed test result for every chatbot.

In practical terms, assume that a determined child may encounter another account, device, browser or service. Keep the conversation open, review the inventory periodically and update settings when a provider changes its age rules or product design.
Troubleshoot when a restriction does not work
The child can still open the chatbot
- Confirm you changed the setting on the correct child account, not a parent, school or guest account.
- Check whether the setting covers the app only, the website only or both.
- Wait for the provider’s stated propagation period. Gemini changes can take hours; ChatGPT changes may not apply immediately.
- Sign out of other accounts and inspect every browser profile and device.
- Look for a second chatbot embedded in another app.
A ChatGPT control behaves differently than expected
- If use continues during the schedule, check that you set Quiet hours rather than Study hours.
- Remember that Study hours affects eligible new conversations and excludes GPT and Project conversations.
- If parental controls disappeared, check whether either account was unlinked; the teen’s unlinking generates a parent notification.
- Do not expect the linked account to display chat history or real-time activity.
Gemini’s option is missing
Confirm that the child account is supervised and eligible, then check country, language, device and Family Link version. Google’s documented path may appear under Content restrictions in an older Family Link release. The option may not be available during a regional rollout or in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the United Kingdom.
A filter allowed something inappropriate
Save the relevant date, service and account details, use the provider’s reporting tools and tell a trusted adult. Revisit the family rule and consider removing that service rather than trying to tune a filter that the provider does not let parents control. If there is an immediate safety concern, contact the appropriate emergency or safeguarding service in your country.

- Monthly: ask which chatbots and accounts are being used and repeat the device-and-browser inventory.
- After updates: reopen each provider’s help page and Family Link or account settings because labels, age rules and rollout status can change.
- At transitions: review settings when a child gets a new phone, starts a new school year, turns an age threshold or begins using a shared device.
- After an incident: document what happened, report it to the service, change account access and discuss the event without blaming the child for seeking help.
What about Meta AI?
A U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce memorandum dated November 18, 2025 described Meta features as planned for early 2026. That prospective statement does not verify a current rollout, settings path or regional availability. Do not rely on it for instructions; check a current official account or family-control page before attempting to restrict that service.
