If Windows 11 shows a grey or blank screen after an update, first press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. If a cursor is visible, restart Windows Explorer next. If the screen stays blank, use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to start Safe Mode and roll back the display driver; consider removing a recent update only if the timing supports it.
Before troubleshooting, identify what the screen shows
“Grey screen” is a description of the symptom, not a diagnosis. Microsoft’s guidance covers blank screens, which may appear grey, black, or otherwise empty. Incompatible drivers and incomplete updates are possible causes, but the color alone does not establish what went wrong. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide does not tie this symptom to a specific Windows 11 update.
- Blank screen with a cursor: Try restarting Windows Explorer.
- Blank screen without a cursor: Try the graphics reset shortcut, then recovery steps if needed.
- Sign-in screen appears: Sign in if possible and use the Windows settings or Device Manager steps below.
- A stop code appears: Treat it as a stop-code error, not a plain blank-screen problem; use Microsoft’s separate blue-screen error guidance.
Try the least disruptive fixes first
1. Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft documents this shortcut as a way to wake the screen by resetting the graphics driver. The display may flicker or you may hear a short beep. If the screen remains blank, continue to the next applicable step.

2. Restart Windows Explorer if you can see a cursor
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- If Windows Explorer appears in the process list, select it and choose Restart.
- If it is not listed, choose File > Run new task, enter
explorer.exe, and select OK.
This step is for a blank screen with a cursor. If Task Manager does not open or the screen remains blank, move to Windows RE.

Use Windows RE to start Safe Mode
If Windows will not display normally, Windows Recovery Environment can provide access to Safe Mode. Microsoft’s documented method uses repeated interrupted starts; use it only when normal sign-in is not available.
- Hold the computer’s power button until it shuts down.
- Turn it on. When Windows begins to start, hold the power button again to shut it down.
- Repeat the interrupted start two or three times, until Windows Recovery Environment appears.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking.
Windows RE menus can vary by device and Windows configuration. If the recovery screen does not appear, consult Microsoft’s blank-screen recovery instructions.

Roll back the display driver if the problem followed a driver update
In Safe Mode, check whether Windows can restore the previous display driver. This is most relevant when the screen problem began after a driver change; the option may not be available if Windows has no earlier driver to restore.

Consider uninstalling a recent Windows update
Removing an update is a later step, especially when the display problem began immediately after that update. It is not a guaranteed fix. Microsoft warns that uninstalling a security update has risks, and some updates cannot be removed. Review Microsoft’s update recovery guidance before proceeding.
If Windows is accessible
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, then select the relevant update if Windows offers it for removal.

If Windows is not accessible
In Windows RE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and follow the prompts. If you are unsure which update preceded the failure, check the update history when you regain access rather than guessing.
Use System Restore or other recovery options only if needed
If the driver and update steps fail, Windows RE also offers System Restore and other recovery choices. Microsoft recommends choosing the least disruptive option appropriate to the situation because some recovery actions can cause data loss. Reinstalling Windows from installation media is a more drastic option and can remove files; it is not an appropriate first response to a blank screen after an update. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the potential effects of each choice.

When the screen is still blank
If the display remains blank after these software recovery steps, the cause is not established by the symptom alone. Record whether a cursor or sign-in screen appears, whether Windows RE opens, and which update or driver change preceded the issue. Those details can help narrow the next step without assuming that a particular Windows update or hardware component is responsible.
