If your TV picture works but the sound has stopped, check mute and volume on both the TV and the connected device, then confirm the TV is sending audio to the right speakers. Headphones, Bluetooth audio, or a soundbar setting can redirect sound away from the TV speakers. Work through the checks below before assuming the TV needs repair; menu names vary by model, region, and software version.
1. Check mute and volume on the TV and source device

Raise the TV volume and press the remote’s Mute button once. Check whether a mute icon appears or disappears.

If the picture comes from a set-top box, game console, or another HDMI device, check that device’s mute and volume controls too. Its audio can be muted even when the TV volume is up.

If convenient, try a different app or input. Sound on another source can help narrow the issue to the original app, input, or connected device; it does not by itself prove which one is at fault.

LG’s guidance also identifies muted or zero volume on either the TV or an external device as a cause of no sound: What to check if your LG TV has no sound and LG TV troubleshooting: no audio from TV.
2. Select the audio output you intend to use
Open the TV’s sound or audio settings and look for an option such as Sound Out, Speaker, or Audio Output. If you are testing the built-in speakers, select the TV speakers. If you use a soundbar or receiver, select the connection for that device.

A TV can remain set to an external speaker that is disconnected or switched off. Headphones or a paired Bluetooth device can also take over audio output. Temporarily disconnect them, or change the output back to the speakers you want. On some Sony models, connected headphones or Bluetooth audio prevent sound from coming through the TV speakers or an ARC/eARC audio system; the exact behavior depends on the model. If an HDMI-connected source has no sound, turn off the TV and source device, then check that the HDMI cable is firmly connected at both ends. Restart both devices and test again. If a plug feels loose, or the cable looks damaged, try another cable as a diagnostic check; replacing a cable is not the default fix for every audio problem.

LG recommends checking the HDMI connection and restarting the TV and connected device in its no-sound troubleshooting guidance.
4. Check ARC/eARC when using a soundbar or receiver
For audio over HDMI ARC or eARC, the TV and sound system both need to support the feature. Connect the cable to the ports labeled ARC or eARC on both devices, then check that the TV’s audio output and ARC/eARC settings are enabled or set for the connected system. Some menus also offer HDMI-CEC settings; labels and setup requirements vary by brand and model.

If the connection and settings look right but only certain content is silent, the audio format may not be supported by the sound system. Where the devices allow it, check the format or digital-audio-output setting and try a compatible option. Sony’s ARC/eARC troubleshooting guide covers compatibility, port, settings, and format checks. Roku’s HDMI-CEC and ARC setup guidance also notes that setting names and steps can differ across TV brands and software.
5. Run the TV’s sound test
Look in the TV’s support, diagnosis, or sound settings for a built-in Sound Test or Sound Self-Diagnosis. Availability and the menu path depend on the model. LG describes using Sound Self-Diagnosis to help check whether the issue is with the TV’s sound or its setup: LG sound self-diagnosis instructions.

Compare the test with the affected app or input and, if possible, another source. Also compare the output path: TV speakers, headphones or Bluetooth, and a soundbar or receiver. If the built-in speakers work but the soundbar does not, focus on the soundbar’s power, the selected output, ARC/eARC ports and settings, and format compatibility. A failed test is a reason to follow the manufacturer’s model-specific support steps; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
When to contact the manufacturer
If the sound test is abnormal, or the checks above leave the TV silent, use the support page or service channel for your exact TV model. Have the model number and a clear description of which outputs and sources you tested. Persistent silence alone is not enough to diagnose a failed speaker or other hardware fault.
