The icon may be missing even though the app is still installed. On Android, YouTube may have been removed from the Home screen while remaining in the app list. On iPhone, it may be in App Library, on a hidden Home Screen page, or—on iOS 18—in the Hidden folder. Find and open the existing app first; reinstall only when YouTube is genuinely absent.
Identify what happened before changing anything
A missing shortcut and a missing app are different problems. Searching for YouTube is the quickest way to tell which one you have. If the search result opens YouTube, the installation is intact and you only need to restore its shortcut or visibility. If it appears in an app list or App Library but not on a Home Screen page, it is installed but not currently placed where you expect. If no search, app-list, or App Library result exists, check the official store before assuming a system problem.

Open the complete app list
- From the Android Home screen, swipe up from the bottom edge to open the app list. Depending on the phone maker and launcher, this may be called the app drawer or Apps screen and may use a different gesture.
- Scroll through the installed apps or use the app-list search field to look for YouTube.
- Tap YouTube. If it opens, the app is installed and you can restore its shortcut without downloading anything.
Android launchers do not all use identical labels or layouts. The generic Google Android Help procedure applies to the standard app-list gesture, but a manufacturer’s launcher can present the list differently. Look for the screen that contains every installed app rather than only the icons currently pinned to Home.

Drag YouTube onto the Home screen
- Open the app list again and locate YouTube.
- Touch and hold the YouTube icon.
- Keep holding while you drag it toward the edge of the screen. The Home screen should appear.
- Move the icon to the desired page and position, then lift your finger.
The result is a new Home screen shortcut; it does not download a second copy of the application. If you have several Home screen pages, move the icon to the page where you want it before releasing it.
Understand Remove versus Uninstall
When you long-press an Android icon, the launcher can show commands such as Remove and Uninstall. Google’s Android guidance states that Remove takes an app off the Home screen only. It leaves YouTube installed in the app list, so dragging it back is enough. Uninstall removes the application from the device, which means you must download it again from Google Play.
If you are unsure which command was used, check the app list before opening Google Play. Finding YouTube there confirms that a shortcut was removed rather than the app itself. This distinction avoids an unnecessary reinstall.

- Open Google Play.
- Search for the official YouTube app listing.
- Read the button shown for the listing. An Open button indicates that YouTube is already installed; an Install button indicates that it is not currently installed.
- If the listing offers Install, start the installation and wait for it to finish. The icon can then be opened from the app list and dragged to Home.
Use the official store listing for the app rather than an installer file from an unknown website. Store availability and the wording of buttons can vary by device and account, but the key test is whether the phone can find an installed YouTube package or offers an installation action.
Check Android compatibility when installation or updating fails
YouTube’s surfaced Android installation guidance lists Android 9.0 or later as the requirement for that app guidance. The minimum can change as newer releases replace older ones, so treat Android 9.0 as a time-sensitive compatibility point rather than a permanent guarantee for every future version.
- Open the phone’s Settings and find the screen that reports the Android version. The exact menu name differs by manufacturer.
- If the phone is eligible for a system update, install the available Android update and restart the device if prompted.
- Return to Google Play and check the YouTube listing again.
- If the phone cannot run the current application, use m.youtube.com in a mobile browser as the fallback described by YouTube Help.
Compatibility is separate from a missing shortcut. A phone can have a perfectly valid YouTube installation whose icon was removed, while an older phone can also fail to install a current release even though the launcher is working normally.

Restore YouTube on iPhone
Search from the Home Screen
- From the middle of a Home Screen page, swipe down to open iPhone Search.
- Type YouTube.
- Tap the result. If YouTube opens, the app is installed and the problem is visibility, not installation.
Apple notes that an app on a hidden Home Screen page still appears in App Library. Therefore, a missing icon does not by itself prove that YouTube was deleted.
Move YouTube from App Library to a Home Screen page
- Swipe left past your Home Screen pages until App Library appears.
- Browse the categories or use the App Library search field to find YouTube.
- Touch and hold the YouTube icon until it can be moved.
- Drag it left toward the Home Screen pages, place it on the desired page, and release.
- Tap Done when Home Screen editing is complete.
This operation restores a Home Screen shortcut while keeping the existing app and its data on the phone. If YouTube is visible in App Library but not on Home, use this path instead of reinstalling.
Reveal a hidden Home Screen page
A whole Home Screen page can be hidden while its apps remain installed. To make the page visible again:
- Touch and hold an empty area of any Home Screen page until the icons begin to jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then choose Edit Pages. On some iPhone versions, you can tap the page-dot indicator directly.
- Look for a page whose circle is unchecked.
- Tap the unchecked circle to select that page, then finish editing.
Once the page is selected, its YouTube icon and other shortcuts become visible again. If YouTube still is not there, return to App Library and drag the app to the page you want.
Unhide YouTube in iOS 18
iOS 18 adds a separate Hidden folder. An app placed there does not appear on the Home Screen, in App Library, or in Search, so ordinary searching cannot find it.
- Swipe left through the Home Screen pages to open App Library.
- Scroll to the Hidden folder and open it.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode when requested.
- Touch and hold YouTube.
- Tap Don’t Require Face ID (or the equivalent authentication wording shown on the device).
After authentication is removed from the app’s hidden state, YouTube can be located normally and placed on a Home Screen page. Apple also lists hidden apps under Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps, which is useful when you need to review which apps are hidden.

The Hidden folder is an iOS 18 feature. Do not expect to see it on an iPhone running an earlier iOS release; use Search, App Library, and hidden-page checks instead.
If YouTube is absent from the iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Search for the official YouTube app listing.
- Use the listing’s download control to install it if the app is not already on the phone.
- After installation, locate YouTube in App Library and drag it to the desired Home Screen page.
If the App Store shows an open action rather than a download action, YouTube is already installed and the App Library or hidden-state procedures are the correct solution.
Additional checks before reinstalling
Look through every Home Screen page before concluding that the icon vanished. A shortcut can be moved to a different page without changing the installation. On Android, the app list is the authoritative place to check whether the package remains available. On iPhone, Search, App Library, hidden pages, and the iOS 18 Hidden folder represent different visibility states, so check them in that order when possible.

Use the action offered by the store as a second confirmation. On Android, Open means the listing recognizes an installed app, while Install means the phone does not currently have it installed. On iPhone, an open control similarly points to an existing installation; a download control indicates that installation is needed. These checks prevent downloading an app that is already present.
If YouTube opens but the icon will not stay where you drop it, repeat the drag from the complete app list or App Library rather than from a recent-apps view. The recovery operation is specifically a shortcut placement action. It should not require changing launcher settings, erasing the phone, or resetting unrelated preferences.
A single decision path for either platform
- Search first. Use the Android app list or iPhone Search. Try opening YouTube from the result.
- If it opens, restore the shortcut. Drag it from the Android app list or iPhone App Library to Home.
- On iPhone, check visibility controls. Reveal any unchecked Home Screen page and, on iOS 18, inspect the Hidden folder.
- If there is no result, check the official store. Google Play is the Android source; the App Store is the iPhone source.
- Install only when the store indicates that YouTube is absent. After installation, place the new icon on Home.
- If Android installation is blocked, verify the operating system. Update Android when supported; otherwise use m.youtube.com in a mobile browser.
This sequence separates the three states that look similar on the screen: an installed app with a removed shortcut, an installed app hidden by launcher or page settings, and an app that is no longer installed.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reinstalling immediately: An icon removed with Android’s Remove command or an iPhone app left in App Library does not require a new download.
- Confusing a hidden page with a hidden app: On iPhone, an unchecked Home Screen page is different from iOS 18’s Hidden folder. The latter also removes the app from Search and App Library.
- Assuming every Android phone has the same labels: The app-list gesture and launcher wording can vary, even though the underlying distinction between Home shortcut and installed app remains.
- Ignoring operating-system age: If an older Android phone cannot install the current YouTube app, repeatedly searching for an icon will not solve the compatibility issue.

You have restored the icon when YouTube launches from the desired Home Screen location without requiring a fresh installation. On Android, that normally means the app was found in the app list and dragged to Home. On iPhone, it means the app was found through Search or App Library, a hidden page or iOS 18 Hidden-folder state was corrected when necessary, and the icon was placed on a Home Screen page. Does every iPhone have the Hidden folder?
No. The separate Hidden folder is an iOS 18 feature. Earlier iOS versions use Search, App Library, and hidden-page controls instead. On iOS 18, authenticate in Hidden, touch and hold YouTube, and choose Don’t Require Face ID or the equivalent command.
