Windows 8 does not include the compact Start menu found in earlier Windows versions. Its built-in Start button and Windows logo key open the full-screen Start screen instead. Press the Windows logo key to get there and search for apps; if you specifically want a classic-style menu, a legacy third-party option is Classic Shell, but its development stopped in 2017 and compatibility of current Open Shell releases with Windows 8 is not established.

The right fix depends on what you mean by “restore.” If you simply want to get to Start or open a program, Windows 8 already provides built-in ways to do that. If you want a smaller, older-style menu on the desktop, that requires third-party software rather than a Windows setting. This guide explains the difference and what to check before choosing either path.

Open Start in Windows 8

If you want to reach the Windows 8 Start area, rather than restore the old compact menu, use either of these built-in methods:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Press the Windows logo key on your keyboard.
  • From the desktop, click the Start area in the lower-left corner.

Both methods open the full-screen Start screen. The desktop corner is not a button that switches Windows 8 back to the Windows 7-style menu. Microsoft’s Windows 8 navigation guidance describes these ways to reach Start; it dates from the preview period, so treat its interface details as guidance for that era rather than a guarantee about every Windows 8 build.

This distinction is the key to solving the common “Where did the Start button go?” question. In Windows 8, Start remains the place to launch apps and find things, but its presentation changed. Pressing the Windows logo key is a direct way to open it from the keyboard; clicking the lower-left Start area is the desktop route. Neither action restores the compact list that appeared in older Windows versions.

If your goal is only to open a program, try the built-in Start screen before installing anything. It is the native Windows 8 interface, and using it does not require a separate utility or a replacement keyboard. You can search for a program or browse the Apps view rather than depend on a traditional menu.

Find an app from the Start screen

Windows 8 lets you search for apps from Start, so you do not need a classic menu just to launch a program. Press the Windows logo key to open Start, then begin typing the app’s name. Microsoft’s preview-era guide also describes opening the Search charm with Windows logo key + Q, or using the Apps view to browse available apps.

These are three ways to approach the same practical task: get to Start, locate the app, and launch it. Typing the app name is useful when you know what you want but do not see its tile. The Apps view is an alternative when you would rather browse the installed apps. The Search charm shortcut is a period-specific navigation detail from Microsoft’s Windows 8 preview guidance; if the shortcut or exact interface differs on your build, use the Windows logo key and the on-screen Start and Apps options instead.

Search is an alternative to scrolling through tiles, not a restoration of the old menu. It helps answer the everyday problem behind many requests to “get the Start menu back”: locating an application from the desktop. If you can reach Start and find the program through search or Apps view, the built-in route may be enough. If what you specifically want is a compact menu that stays in the familiar older style, see the third-party option below.

Pin an app to Start

  1. Open Start and locate the app. Use search or the Apps view if it is not already visible as a tile.
  2. Select the app’s tile to display its app-bar commands.
  3. Choose the command to pin the app to Start.

Pinning is useful when you want an app to be easier to find on the Start screen the next time you open it. It changes how the app is presented on Start; it does not change Windows 8 into a desktop menu or bring back the older compact layout. If an app is already shown as a tile, the search-and-browse step may not be necessary.

The precise wording and available commands can vary by build. These navigation and pinning details come from Microsoft’s Windows 8 preview-period guide, not a current support manual. Follow the commands presented by your own installation rather than assuming every preview-era screen or label appears unchanged.

Choose between built-in Start and a classic-style menu

There are two distinct paths. Use Windows 8’s built-in Start screen if your need is to reach Start, search for an app, browse Apps, or pin an app. Consider a classic-style third-party menu only if you specifically want the compact menu layout associated with earlier Windows versions and accept installing shell-modification software.

What you want Best-supported path Trade-off
Open Start or launch an app Windows logo key, lower-left Start area, then search or Apps view Opens the full-screen Start screen, not the old compact menu.
Keep an app easier to find on Start Use the app-bar command to pin it to Start The app is easier to locate on Start, but the interface remains the Start screen.
Use a menu resembling older Windows versions A compatible third-party shell replacement may be an option Requires installing additional software; compatibility must be checked for the exact release and Windows installation.

The built-in path is the least complicated choice when Start-screen access meets your need: it uses Windows features already described in Microsoft’s Windows 8 guidance. The classic-style path is different because it relies on separate software to alter the Start experience. There is no supported basis to promise that a particular current replacement will work on every Windows 8 computer, so do not treat the two options as interchangeable or assume the software route is a setting that can be toggled on.

Get a classic-style Start menu

If you need a compact menu that resembles the one from older Windows versions, Windows 8’s built-in Start screen does not provide it. Classic Shell is a historical third-party option: its official project page listed Windows 8 compatibility and described multiple menu styles and skins, along with a Start button.

That historical listing matters, but it has a limit: it describes Classic Shell, not a guarantee about all later software carrying on its work. Classic Shell’s own project page said active development stopped. A past compatibility statement should therefore not be read as confirmation that a currently available alternative, installer, or release is suitable for your precise Windows 8 setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is an important maintenance caveat. On December 3, 2017, the Classic Shell project announced that its original development had stopped after eight years. Volunteers continued the work under the name Open Shell, but compatibility of current Open Shell releases with Windows 8 is not established. Do not assume that a download described as a continuation of Classic Shell is compatible with your particular system.

The project’s “eight years” statement is a description of its own development history, not a measure of how long Windows 8 has been supported or how likely the software is to work on a particular computer. The decision point is practical: do you need the old menu enough to install legacy shell-modification software, and can you confirm that the exact version you are considering supports your Windows installation?

Before installing a shell replacement

  • Confirm whether the software release explicitly supports your Windows version and installation.
  • Use the project’s own documentation to check what the installer changes and how to undo or uninstall it.
  • If compatibility is unclear, use Windows 8’s built-in Start screen and search rather than installing a shell modification on the assumption that it will work.

Check compatibility for the specific release you intend to use, not only for the name of an earlier project. A continuation may have its own release history and support statements. If its documentation does not clearly cover Windows 8, treat compatibility as uncertain rather than inferring it from Classic Shell’s old Windows 8 listing.

Also make the installation decision based on the trade-off you actually care about. The built-in Start screen avoids adding a shell replacement, but it does not look like the compact menu from older Windows. A third-party menu may offer familiar styles and skins, as Classic Shell’s project page described, but using it means taking responsibility for verifying the software and understanding how to remove it. The sources available do not establish a current Open Shell Windows 8 compatibility guarantee, a price for a given release, or a reason to buy hardware for this task.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the built-in route, no special purchase is needed: use the Windows logo key or the desktop Start area, then search or browse. A physical product is not demonstrated to be necessary for restoring access to Start. If you want additional software, evaluate that software directly rather than buying a product on the assumption that it is required to use Windows 8 Start.

Classic Shell’s historical Windows 8 compatibility statement is not proof that a current Open Shell release is supported on Windows 8. The distinction matters because the original project is no longer actively maintained, while compatibility of the continuation with Windows 8 has not been established.

Windows 8.1 has a Start button, not the old menu

Windows 8.1 brought back a visible Start button on the desktop, but that button opens the Start screen rather than restoring the compact classic menu. Microsoft community guidance and a Microsoft Press sample both make this distinction. If you are following instructions for Windows 8.1, seeing a Start button does not mean the old menu is present.

This version difference can make instructions seem contradictory. A Windows 8 user may be told to use the lower-left Start area; a Windows 8.1 user may see a visible button there. In both cases, the important distinction in the cited Microsoft material is between reaching Start and having the earlier compact menu. The 8.1 button takes you to the Start screen; its presence does not mean that Windows has restored the Windows 7-style menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are unsure which version is installed, check the Windows version before following instructions written specifically for 8.1. Do not interpret a missing visible button in Windows 8 as proof that Start is unavailable: the Windows logo key and the lower-left Start area are the built-in ways described for accessing it. Likewise, do not interpret the 8.1 button as a classic menu.

Windows 8.1 support status

Microsoft says support for Windows 8.1 ended on January 10, 2023. The company says the operating system no longer receives security or software updates and recommends moving to a supported Windows release. That date applies to Windows 8.1; it should not be treated as Windows 8’s support-end date.

Keep this support notice scoped to the version Microsoft names. The cited notice establishes the Windows 8.1 date and recommendation, but it does not settle Windows 8’s lifecycle date. Do not transfer the January 10, 2023 date to Windows 8 simply because the version names are similar. If your computer runs Windows 8.1, the end of updates is relevant context when deciding how to use it; restoring a Start menu does not change that support status.

No. In Windows 8, the lower-left Start area opens the full-screen Start screen. It is a way to get to Start, not a built-in switch to the compact menu found in earlier Windows versions.

Can I find and launch apps without a classic menu?

Yes. Open Start with the Windows logo key and begin typing the app name. Microsoft’s preview-period guidance also describes the Search charm shortcut, Windows logo key + Q, and using the Apps view to browse. Microsoft says Windows 8.1 support ended January 10, 2023, and that it no longer receives security or software updates. This date is for Windows 8.1, not a verified support-end date for Windows 8.
