To restore the Action Button to silent mode, open Settings > Action Button, swipe through the actions until Silent Mode is selected, then press and hold the Action Button. Hold it again to switch back to Ring mode. Apple documents this assignment and press-and-hold behavior in its Action button guide.
What restoring Silent Mode actually changes
On supported iPhone models, the Action Button takes the place of the physical Ring/Silent switch. Its assignment determines what happens when you press and hold it. Selecting Silent Mode makes that hold gesture switch the phone between Ring and Silent modes.
There are two separate tasks that are easy to confuse:

The Action Button is available only on supported iPhone models, so an iPhone without an Action Button will not show this setting. Apple’s documentation identifies the feature and its available actions; the exact model range can change, so check your model against the current Apple Action button guide rather than assuming every iPhone has it.

Restore Silent Mode as the Action Button action
- Open Settings. Find and open the gray gear-shaped Settings app.
- Open Action Button. Scroll to and tap Action Button. This page controls the function assigned to the button.
- Swipe through the actions. On the Action Button screen, swipe across the available choices until Silent Mode is displayed. Leave Silent Mode selected. Apple describes this option as switching the iPhone between Silent and Ring for calls and alerts.
- Test the assignment. Press and hold the physical Action Button. A hold switches Silent Mode on; holding it again switches Silent Mode off. The required gesture is a press and hold, not a brief tap.
The assignment is saved from the Action Button screen. You do not need to install an app, buy an accessory, or connect the iPhone to a computer.
Turn Silent Mode on when the button has another assignment
If the Action Button is intentionally assigned to another function—such as a shortcut or another available action—you can still change the sound state without replacing that assignment:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Use the Silent Mode control to turn Silent Mode on or off.
This route changes whether the iPhone is currently silent; it does not make Silent Mode the Action Button’s assigned function. Apple documents this alternative in its Silence iPhone guide.

A hold is required
With Silent Mode selected, the Action Button performs its assigned action when you press and hold it. A quick press is not the documented trigger for this setting. Keep the button depressed until the iPhone accepts the gesture, then release it.

Each successful hold toggles the state
One successful hold turns Silent Mode on. A later successful hold turns it off and returns the phone to Ring mode. The button is a toggle, not a one-way “mute” command.
Changing the assignment does not necessarily change the current state
Choosing Silent Mode on the Action Button page determines what the button controls. If you need to know or change the present sound state, use the control under Settings > Sounds & Haptics. This distinction is useful when you have just restored the assignment but the phone is still in the state it was previously using.
What Silent Mode silences—and what it does not
Apple states that Silent Mode prevents the iPhone from ringing or playing alerts and other sound effects, although the phone may still vibrate. Silent Mode is therefore not a universal speaker mute.

- Vibration: The iPhone may still vibrate, depending on its haptic and vibration settings.
- Alarms: Alarms can continue to play through the speaker.
- Audio apps: Music and other media playback can continue to produce sound.
- Games: Many games can still play audio through the speaker.
These exceptions explain why a phone can be in Silent Mode and still make noise. If you need to stop media or game audio, pause it in the app or adjust the volume separately; restoring the Action Button assignment alone does not silence every audio source. Troubleshooting the Action Button assignment
“Action Button” is not listed in Settings
The setting appears only on iPhone models that have an Action Button. Apple describes the button as replacing the Ring/Silent switch on supported models. If your iPhone has a traditional Ring/Silent switch, there is no Action Button assignment to restore; use that switch or the sound controls in Settings instead.
Do not infer compatibility from the phone’s software version alone. Check the hardware model and Apple’s current supported-model documentation.
Silent Mode does not appear while you swipe
Return to Settings > Action Button and swipe across the action choices again. The goal is to leave the choice labeled Silent Mode selected, not merely to open the Action Button page. If the page still does not offer that choice, verify that the iPhone is a supported model and consult Apple’s current list of Action Button actions.
The button performs another action
That means another action is still selected. Open Settings > Action Button, swipe to Silent Mode, and leave it selected. Then press and hold the button to test it. If you prefer the existing assignment, do not change it; use Settings > Sounds & Haptics whenever you need to switch Silent Mode.

A short press appears to do nothing
Silent Mode uses a press-and-hold gesture. Press the Action Button and keep holding it rather than releasing immediately. A brief tap is not the documented way to invoke the assigned action.
The phone still vibrates
Vibration is compatible with Silent Mode. Apple specifically notes that the iPhone may still vibrate even when it does not ring or play alerts. If your objective is a completely quiet phone, review the available vibration and haptic controls in Settings > Sounds & Haptics in addition to enabling Silent Mode.
Music, a game, or an alarm still makes sound
Silent Mode does not silence every sound source. Media apps, many games, and alarms may continue through the speaker. Pause the media, lower the relevant volume, or adjust the app’s own sound settings when appropriate. Do not treat continued media or alarm audio as proof that the Action Button assignment failed.

Shortcuts and other Action Button functions
The Action Button can be assigned to different functions on supported iPhone models. Apple also documents running shortcuts with the Action Button in a separate guide, whose supported-model context includes iPhone 15 Pro or later. That context should not be treated as a complete compatibility list for every Action Button feature; check the exact model and the current Apple documentation before relying on a particular option.

If a shortcut or another function is currently selected, restoring Silent Mode simply means replacing that assignment on the Action Button page. You can switch back later by returning to the same page and selecting the other action.
Verification checklist
- Confirm that Settings > Action Button exists on the iPhone.
- Confirm that the Action Button page visibly shows Silent Mode as the selected action.
- Press and hold the button rather than tapping it briefly.
- Use Settings > Sounds & Haptics if you only need to change the current Silent Mode state.
- Remember that vibration, alarms, music, and many games can remain audible or active.

Apple’s Use and customize the Action button on iPhone guide is the authoritative reference for the assignment path, available actions, and press-and-hold behavior. The Silence iPhone guide explains Silent Mode’s effects and exceptions. Apple’s Run shortcuts with the Action button guide provides additional supported-model context for shortcut use.
Use those pages if the labels on your iPhone differ, a software update changes the available actions, or you need to verify compatibility for a specific model. The setting itself remains a straightforward choice: assign Silent Mode under Settings > Action Button, then press and hold the button whenever you want to toggle between Silent and Ring.
