The fix depends on what changed. If you are simply in Desktop Mode, select Return to Gaming Mode; that restores the normal Steam Deck interface without removing anything. If a Decky plugin changed Gaming Mode, remove that plugin from Decky. If you want Decky Loader gone, switch to Desktop Mode, run the Decky installer again, and choose uninstall decky loader. Use SteamOS recovery only when the problem continues after plugin cleanup or involves wider system damage.
These are separate operations: returning to Gaming Mode changes your current session, removing a plugin changes one customization, uninstalling Decky removes the loader, and recovery repairs SteamOS files. Start with the least disruptive option that matches the symptom.
Choose the right fix before changing anything
A customized interface can have several causes. The table below keeps a simple mode switch from turning into an unnecessary system reset.

Do not treat the first row as an uninstall problem. The Desktop Mode shortcut does not remove plugins; it only returns you to the console-oriented Steam interface.

What you need before starting
The ordinary workflow is software-only. You do not need to buy a new Steam Deck, recovery hardware, a printed guide, a USB-C hub, or a keyboard simply to leave Desktop Mode or remove a normal Decky plugin. A keyboard can make terminal work easier, but the supported installer path does not require one. Keep the Deck powered and let an uninstall finish before switching modes again.
First note whether the unwanted change is limited to colors, fonts, artwork, spacing, menus, an overlay, or another visual element. Also note whether games launch and whether Gaming Mode itself starts. Those observations determine whether this is a narrow customization problem or a system failure.
Return from Desktop Mode to the standard Steam Deck interface
If the screen looks like a Linux desktop with windows, a panel, and a mouse pointer, you probably have not damaged Gaming Mode at all. Steam Support documents a desktop shortcut labeled Return to Gaming Mode for this exact transition. The support page describes it as a link on the desktop that returns the device to its standard Steam Deck UI: Steam Deck and Steam Machine Desktop: FAQ.
- Move the pointer to an empty area of the Desktop Mode screen.
- Open the shortcut labeled Return to Gaming Mode.
- Wait for Steam to close the desktop session and load the normal full-screen Steam Deck interface.
Logging off is also a documented route back. Use the desktop environment’s log-off command if the shortcut is missing or does not open. After logging off, Steam should present the regular Gaming Mode interface when the session starts again.
What this step does not do
- It does not uninstall Decky Loader.
- It does not remove a theme or reset a plugin’s settings.
- It does not restore files that a plugin may have modified.
If Gaming Mode looks normal after the transition, stop here. There is no reason to remove software merely because Desktop Mode was open.
Remove one plugin while keeping Decky Loader
Use this path when Decky is useful but one extension is responsible for the unwanted appearance or behavior. The Decky project describes plugin updating, uninstalling, and reloading through its plugin-management interface. Its project documentation is maintained in the Decky Loader repository and the project README.
- Start or return to Gaming Mode.
- Open Decky’s plugin management menu.
- Find the plugin that supplied the theme, layout change, animation, overlay, or other customization.
- Choose the menu option to uninstall or remove that plugin, then confirm the action if Decky asks.
- Use Decky’s reload function when the interface offers it, or return to the main Steam Deck screen and check whether the change has disappeared.
Remove only the plugin you have identified first. Uninstalling the loader is a broader change and is unnecessary when the rest of Decky is working as intended.

A theme can affect colors, fonts, backgrounds, spacing, or other visual elements while leaving the underlying Steam client functional. Treat it like any other Decky plugin: locate the theme-related entry in the management menu and remove it. Returning to Gaming Mode alone will not undo an active theme because it changes modes rather than plugin state.
If the theme remains after removal, the available documentation does not establish that every plugin automatically reverses every file or setting it touched. Avoid assuming that deleting Decky will guarantee a perfect visual rollback. Check whether the plugin provides its own reset or cleanup control before escalating to system recovery.

If you cannot identify the offending plugin
List the changes you made immediately before the interface changed. Start with the newest appearance, theme, animation, or layout plugin and remove it first. If several customizations were installed together and you cannot separate their effects, uninstalling Decky is the documented all-loader option; it is more disruptive because it removes the platform used to manage the plugins.
Make one change at a time and check Gaming Mode after each removal. That gives you a clearer indication of which extension caused the symptom and avoids deleting working customizations unnecessarily. If the plugin menu still opens, updating or reloading a plugin may also be available there, but use removal when your goal is a stock interface.
Uninstall Decky Loader completely
Choose this route when you want a stock Steam Deck without Decky’s loader, or when Decky itself is the source of the problem. The project’s documented workflow is to return to Desktop Mode, run the installer again, and select the uninstall option. Running the installer for this purpose does not mean you are reinstalling the loader; it exposes the documented uninstall choice.
- Press the Steam button.
- Open Power.
- Select Switch to Desktop.
- In Desktop Mode, run the Decky installer again.
- Choose
uninstall decky loaderin the installer. - Allow the installer to finish, then return to Gaming Mode with the desktop shortcut.
The Decky README also documents an uninstall script for users who prefer to work in Konsole. Use the script and instructions shown in the current README rather than copying an unverified command from another page; the project’s instructions are the authoritative procedure for that route.
What a loader uninstall means
Removing Decky removes the loader and the management layer through which its plugins are installed and controlled. It is not the same as simply leaving Desktop Mode, and it is not a promise that every plugin-created file, preference, or visual side effect will be rewritten. The project documentation does not guarantee complete reversal of every change made by every plugin.
For that reason, uninstalling Decky should be a deliberate choice. If you want to keep other plugins, remove only the offending entry instead. If you want an unmodified interface and are comfortable giving up all Decky plugins, use the full uninstall procedure.

Installer versus Konsole
The installer-based route is the clearest choice for most owners because it is reached from Desktop Mode and presents the documented uninstall option. Konsole is an alternative for users who deliberately prefer a terminal and can follow the current README. Do not substitute a command from an old forum post: plugin and SteamOS compatibility can change, and the current project instructions are the safer reference.
Check the result without making the problem larger
After either a plugin removal or a loader uninstall, verify the result in Gaming Mode before attempting recovery.
- The device opens to the normal Steam Deck library and navigation layout.
- The plugin-specific control, panel, theme, or artwork is no longer present.
- Menus and game launching work normally.
- You are not still viewing Desktop Mode.
- Decky appears only if you intentionally kept it installed.
If these checks pass, stop. Installing more utilities or resetting SteamOS adds risk without improving a cosmetic issue that is already resolved. If a visual residue remains but the system is otherwise stable, identify the plugin that supplied it and look for that plugin’s own reset or cleanup control.

When ordinary plugin cleanup is not enough
Escalate when symptoms extend beyond a changed appearance or when the Deck remains broken after the relevant plugin and, if necessary, Decky Loader have been removed. Examples include persistent system errors, a Gaming Mode session that will not start, or evidence that system files were modified outside normal plugin behavior.
Steam’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting documentation covers recovery choices, including restoring modified system files to an unmodified state. Follow that guide for the exact recovery option that matches the failure. Recovery is a system-level operation, so it belongs after the less disruptive Desktop Mode and plugin-management steps, not before them.
Why recovery is a last resort here
A mode switch does not alter installed software, and removing one Decky plugin is narrower than repairing SteamOS. Sending every theme problem through recovery can create unnecessary downtime and may affect more of the system than the customization did. Use the recovery instructions when the evidence points to SteamOS trouble rather than an isolated plugin appearance change.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Return to Gaming Mode shortcut is not visible
Use the documented alternative: log off from Desktop Mode. If neither route returns you to the standard interface, treat the issue as more than a normal mode switch and consult Steam’s Desktop FAQ before changing installed software.
Gaming Mode returns, but the custom interface is still there
You have solved the mode problem, not the plugin problem. Open Decky’s plugin management menu and remove the plugin that supplied the customization. If you do not want Decky at all, follow the full uninstall procedure instead.

Do not repeatedly reinstall random plugin files. Switch to Desktop Mode and use the project’s documented installer-based uninstall option. This removes the loader through the project’s supported workflow. If broader system symptoms remain afterward, move to SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting.
The interface is partly restored but a visual setting remains
Decky removal is not documented as a guarantee that every plugin side effect is reversed. Identify which plugin supplied the remaining setting and look for that plugin’s own reset or cleanup control. If the remaining change is accompanied by system instability, use Steam’s recovery guidance rather than assuming the cosmetic residue is the entire problem.
The Deck works, but you are unsure whether Decky was removed
Return to Gaming Mode and check whether Decky’s management controls are still available. A normal Steam Deck interface by itself does not prove that the loader was uninstalled; it may simply mean you left Desktop Mode. Confirm the loader state separately before deleting or reinstalling anything else.
The problem returns after a SteamOS or Steam client update
Plugin compatibility can change as SteamOS and the Steam client change. A previously harmless plugin may need an update, removal, or replacement after an update. Reapply the same scope rule: manage the individual plugin if you want to keep Decky, uninstall Decky if you want the loader gone, and use system recovery only for wider failures.

You removed a plugin but cannot tell whether it worked
Reload the interface if Decky offers that control, then leave and re-enter the affected menu in Gaming Mode. Compare the specific element that changed rather than relying only on the general appearance. If the element remains, the wrong plugin may have been removed, another plugin may provide the same feature, or the plugin may have left a setting that requires its own cleanup control.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Desktop Mode with a modified Gaming Mode: the desktop shortcut is a mode switch, not a cleanup tool.
- Removing Decky when one plugin is at fault: this discards the entire loader and all of its managed customizations.
- Assuming uninstall means perfect rollback: the available project documentation does not promise reversal of every file or setting a plugin may have changed.
- Starting recovery for a cosmetic issue: recovery is intended for broader SteamOS problems that persist beyond normal cleanup.
