To restore apps you bought on an older Android phone, sign in to the new phone with the same Google Account that paid for them, then reinstall the apps from Google Play. Google Play Help states: “If you buy apps or content on Google Play, you can use it on any compatible Android device without the need to pay again.”

Restoring the purchase gives you the right to install the app again; it does not automatically guarantee that the app is compatible with the new phone or that the app’s local data, settings, and signed-in state will return. Follow the account and compatibility checks below before attempting to pay a second time.

What happens to a purchased app when you change phones?

A Google Play purchase is recognized through the Google Account used at checkout. The entitlement is associated with that account rather than with the old handset. After you add that account to another compatible Android device, Google Play should identify the app as already owned and offer an installation instead of a new purchase.

What you are restoring What Google Play does What may require a separate process
Purchase entitlement Recognizes the original purchase when the purchasing Google Account is active. Nothing, provided you use the same account.
App installation Downloads the app again to a compatible device. Compatibility or availability can prevent installation.
App data and settings Not established by the Play Store reinstall process. Use the app publisher’s account recovery, cloud-sync, or backup instructions.
Content tied to another Google Account Cannot be transferred between Google Accounts. Switch to the account that made the purchase; for a purchase made on the wrong account, ask the developer about its refund options.

Ownership also does not override technical limits. An app can be unavailable for a particular Android device, and a previously purchased app is not guaranteed to remain installable if Google Play or its developer no longer offers it for that device.

Check these details before you begin

  • Identify the purchasing account. If you use several Google Accounts, determine which one was active when the app was bought. The account currently shown in Play Store is the one Google Play will check.
  • Add that account to the new phone. You can select it during the phone’s initial setup or add it later through the phone’s account settings. Account-menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version.
  • Finish basic phone setup. The phone needs access to Google Play and an internet connection so the store can check ownership and download the app.
  • Expect a compatibility check. The new phone may not meet the app’s device requirements even though the account owns the purchase.
  • Separate app recovery from data recovery. If information inside the old app matters, locate that app’s own backup or sign-in procedure before assuming a reinstall will restore it.

How do I restore purchased apps on my new Android phone?

  1. Add or select the Google Account used for the purchase. On the new phone, complete setup with that account, or use the phone’s account settings to add it. If multiple accounts are present, remember which one actually paid for the app.
  2. Open Google Play Store. Launch the Play Store app on the new phone and tap the profile icon.
  3. Open the app-management list. Tap Manage apps & device, then tap Manage.
  4. Show apps that are not on this phone. If the app is not in the visible list, change the device filter to Not installed. This filter is where previously owned apps normally appear when they are absent from the current installation.
  5. Select the app. Tap the app’s entry to open its listing. Check that it is the expected title and that Google Play is showing the account you intend to use.
  6. Install or enable it. Tap Install to download the app. A built-in app that is present but disabled may show Enable instead; tap that button rather than installing a second copy.
  7. Wait for installation to finish. Open the app from the Play Store or the phone’s app list. If it requests a sign-in, use the app’s own account rather than assuming your Google Play purchase account is also the app account.

The Not installed filter is important because the default list can emphasize apps already present on the new phone. If you use the wrong Google Account, the app may be absent from this list or appear to require payment even though you own it under another account.

How to verify the account when several are on the phone

Android phones commonly contain more than one Google Account. Play Store checks the account shown under its profile icon, not simply the first account added during setup. Open that profile menu and switch accounts one at a time. For each account, revisit Manage apps & device, choose Manage, and set the filter to Not installed. Stop when the purchased app appears with an installation option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not expect Google Play to merge libraries. A purchase made under one account remains attached to that account, and signing in with a different account does not create a second entitlement. If you cannot identify the purchasing account, check which account you normally used for Play purchases before contacting the app publisher; repeatedly buying the app under another account will not move the original purchase.

Install a purchased app from a computer

You can send an installation to the new phone from a browser instead of searching on the handset.

  1. On a computer, go to play.google.com and sign in with the Google Account that made the purchase.
  2. Find the app’s Google Play listing.
  3. Choose Install.
  4. If Google Play displays more than one eligible device, select the new phone as the destination.
  5. Confirm by choosing Install again.

The phone must be associated with the selected Google Account and must be eligible for the app. A computer-initiated installation does not bypass device compatibility, account ownership, or availability restrictions. If the new phone is not offered as a destination, verify that it has been set up with that account and that the app supports it.

Why is a purchased app missing from Google Play?

The Play Store is using the wrong Google Account

This is the first check when a paid app does not appear. Tap the Play Store profile icon and inspect the active account. If it is not the account used at checkout, switch to the correct account, return to Manage apps & device > Manage, and select Not installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When several accounts are signed in, repeat the check for each account you legitimately use. Google Play cannot combine purchases from separate accounts into one library.

The app is hidden by the current filter

In the management screen, the visible list may be limited to apps installed on the new phone. Change the filter to Not installed before concluding that the purchase is gone. Then search the list for the app and open its listing.

The new phone is not an eligible device

Google Play can restrict an app by device. Hardware, Android version, or other requirements set by the developer may make the listing unavailable or remove the Install button on the new phone. Ownership remains associated with the account, but it does not force Google Play to install an app on a device that is not supported.

The app is no longer offered for that device

Google’s reinstall guidance does not promise restoration when a developer or Google Play no longer makes an app available for the target device. If the listing cannot be installed after the account and Not installed checks, look for an official statement from the app publisher about supported devices or discontinued versions. Do not assume that an old purchase can override the current listing’s availability rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is Google Play asking me to buy the app again?

Do not immediately purchase it a second time. A renewed payment prompt usually means Google Play is not seeing the original entitlement in the account or device context currently being used.

  1. Tap the Play Store profile icon and verify the active Google Account.
  2. Switch to the account that originally paid for the app, if necessary.
  3. Return to Manage apps & device > Manage and set the filter to Not installed.
  4. Open the app’s listing from that account and check whether Install is available.
  5. Only consider another payment after confirming that the original purchase was not made under a different account and that the listing is genuinely available to the current device.

If the purchase was made under the wrong Google Account, Google Play cannot transfer it to another account. Google’s guidance is to use the purchasing account; you can also contact the app developer to ask whether its policy allows a refund for a purchase made on the wrong account. A refund, if offered, is determined by the developer’s policy and is not a transfer of ownership.

The app installed, but my old data is missing

Installation and data restoration are different operations. The Play Store instructions establish that an owned app can be reinstalled; they do not establish that every app’s local database, preferences, saved files, or sign-in session is backed up.

Sign in to the app’s own account

Many apps keep data under a separate account. After installation, use the same in-app sign-in you used on the old phone and look for the app’s restore, sync, or account-recovery option. Your Google Play purchase proves the right to install the app; it does not necessarily identify the account that stores your content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the publisher’s backup method

Use the app publisher’s documented instructions for cloud sync, exported files, device-to-device transfer, or backup restoration. The correct method differs by app, so do not infer that one app’s behavior applies to another.

Keep the old phone available when possible

If the old phone still works, open the app there and verify that synchronization or backup has completed before relying on the new installation. If the old phone is unavailable, use the publisher’s account-recovery process rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app; reinstalling alone does not create missing data.

What reinstalling does not do

  • It does not move a purchase from one Google Account to another.
  • It does not make an incompatible phone eligible.
  • It does not guarantee access to an app that is no longer offered for the target device.
  • It does not prove that local files, preferences, saved progress, or an in-app login were backed up.
  • It does not replace the app publisher’s own recovery procedure.

These limits explain why a successful installation can still leave an app looking new. Treat the Play Store step as entitlement and installation recovery; treat everything inside the app as a separate recovery task.

Restoring apps across several Android devices

Google Play offers optional app synchronization for devices signed in to the same Google Account. With sync enabled, apps can be installed automatically on selected devices. This is a convenience feature, not a replacement for verifying the purchasing account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also choose a destination device during an installation started from a phone or from play.google.com. Review the selected device carefully when several phones or tablets are listed. Sync and remote installation still follow the same ownership and compatibility rules: the account must own the app, and the destination must be eligible to receive it.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see Most useful next action What the result means
The app is absent from the list. Verify the purchasing Google Account, then choose Not installed under Manage apps & device > Manage. If it appears, select it and install. If it remains absent, investigate device availability or account ownership.
The listing shows a price. Stop before paying and switch the Play Store to the account used at checkout. If the correct account still shows a price, the purchase may belong to another account or the current listing may not recognize the entitlement.
The listing says the app is incompatible. Check whether the developer supports the new phone. Ownership does not remove a device-compatibility restriction.
The app has an Enable button. Tap Enable rather than looking for a second installation. The app is already on the phone but was disabled.
The app opens as if it were new. Use the app’s own sign-in and documented backup or sync recovery. The installation succeeded; the missing information concerns app data, not Play Store ownership.
The computer offers several devices. Select the new phone explicitly before confirming installation. The chosen device receives the installation if it is signed in and compatible.

When to stop troubleshooting in the Play Store

Play Store steps can resolve account recognition and installation, but they cannot repair an app’s private database, recover credentials that were never backed up, or make an unsupported device eligible. Once you have confirmed the purchasing account, checked Not installed, and reviewed compatibility, move to the app publisher’s support and recovery instructions for data-specific problems.

For a purchase that was made on the wrong Google Account, ask the developer about its refund policy rather than trying to move the entitlement yourself. Google Play does not provide an account-to-account transfer mechanism for purchased content.

A short recovery checklist

  1. Identify the Google Account that paid for the app.
  2. Add or select that account on the new Android phone.
  3. Open Play Store and tap the profile icon.
  4. Go to Manage apps & device > Manage.
  5. Set the filter to Not installed.
  6. Choose the app and tap Install, or tap Enable if it was disabled.
  7. If the app is missing, check the account again and then check device availability.
  8. If the app installs without old information, follow the publisher’s separate data-recovery process.

Why does Google Play show a price instead of Install?

The Play Store may be using a different Google Account from the one that made the purchase. Switch accounts and check the Not installed list before buying again.

Can Google Play move a purchase to another Google Account?

No. Purchases cannot be transferred between Google Accounts. Use the account that made the purchase; for an accidental purchase under the wrong account, ask the developer whether a refund is possible.

Why is my purchased app incompatible with my new phone?

Ownership does not override device requirements. The developer or Google Play may restrict the app by hardware, Android version, or other compatibility rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling restore my old app data?

Not necessarily. Installation restores the app entitlement and software, but data, settings, saved files, and sign-in state depend on the app publisher’s backup, sync, or account-recovery system.

Can I install the app from a computer?

Yes. Sign in at play.google.com with the purchasing account, open the app listing, choose Install, select the eligible destination phone, and confirm.

What does an Enable button mean?

It usually means the app is already on the phone but disabled. Tap Enable instead of attempting to install another copy.

The Bottom Line

Use the Google Account that originally bought the app, open Play Store’s Not installed list, and choose Install or Enable. If the app is unavailable or your old information is missing, check device compatibility and follow the publisher’s separate data-recovery instructions rather than paying again.
