Pixel phones do not have one documented master switch that turns every camera AI function off or back on. Google exposes separate controls for individual features, so the fix depends on what disappeared. Identify the missing feature, restore it in that feature’s own menu, then check its prerequisites. If the control is present but the Camera app is failing, use Google’s app-troubleshooting sequence instead of changing unrelated AI settings.
For Camera Coach, open Camera, tap Camera Coach, and select Turn on. Camera Coach requires a network connection, uses the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, and Night Sight modes, and can be unavailable when Guided Frame is enabled. Other functions, such as RAW + JPEG capture, have separate settings.
There is no universal “turn AI back on” switch
“AI” on a Pixel can refer to several unrelated capabilities: an in-camera coaching feature, computational capture and enhancement, file-format controls, or editing and scanning tools in Google Photos. Google’s support documentation describes these features individually rather than as one global AI setting. Turning one control off therefore does not create a single restoration sequence for every camera function.
Start by naming the feature that disappeared. A missing Camera Coach button, a RAW option that is no longer shown, and a Camera app that crashes are different problems. Re-enabling one will not repair the others.

Use the route that matches the symptom
| What you are trying to restore | Where the documented fix begins | Conditions or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Coach | Camera > Camera Coach > Turn on | Network connection; rear camera; Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight mode; Guided Frame may need to be off |
| RAW + JPEG capture | Enable RAW/JPEG control in Camera settings, then choose RAW + JPEG in photo mode | The settings instructions note that the control step is not required on Pixel 8 Pro |
| Camera app that is malfunctioning | Restart, clear the Camera cache, update Pixel Camera and Android, then test in safe mode | This is app diagnosis, not restoration of a particular feature setting |
| Persistent image-quality problem | Check light and lens condition, then use deeper Camera troubleshooting | Clearing Camera storage resets app configuration; Google says saved photos and videos are not deleted |
This comparison is useful because each route addresses a different layer. A feature-specific switch changes availability. A prerequisite check explains a disabled control. App troubleshooting addresses crashes or a broken preview. Physical checks address blur, haze, or darkness that can occur even when every setting is correct.
Restore Camera Coach
Camera Coach is the Pixel feature with a specific “turn on” instruction. Google says it is off by default. When the feature is eligible on your phone, use this sequence:
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Camera Coach.
- Choose Turn on.
After enabling it, use the rear camera in one of the supported modes: Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight. Camera Coach is not documented as a general overlay for every camera mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Test the feature immediately after turning it on. Stay in one of those three modes, point the rear camera at a subject, and confirm that the coaching control responds. Testing in a different mode can make a correctly enabled feature appear to be missing, because eligibility is tied to the documented modes rather than to every viewfinder screen.
When Camera Coach is greyed out
A disabled or grey Camera Coach control does not necessarily mean that the feature was permanently removed. Google identifies two common eligibility blockers:
- No internet connection. Camera Coach needs network access, so connect the phone and try again.
- Guided Frame is enabled. In Camera, open Settings > Advanced > Guided Frame and turn Guided Frame off if you want to use Camera Coach. Then return to the supported camera mode and check the Camera Coach control.
Check the order of those conditions rather than resetting the app first. Connect to a reliable network, select the rear camera, choose Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight, and then review Guided Frame. If the icon becomes active after one change, you have identified an eligibility issue, not a damaged installation.
If the icon remains unavailable, verify that you are using the rear camera and one of the three supported modes before treating it as an app failure. Availability can also vary by Pixel model, Android build, Pixel Camera version, and region; those details matter when a menu differs from Google’s instructions. A path shown in Google’s help page may not have exactly the same label or placement on every release.

Restore RAW + JPEG capture without assuming it disables AI
RAW/JPEG is a file-capture option, not a documented master switch for Pixel processing. Google’s Camera settings instructions describe enabling a RAW/JPEG control and then selecting RAW + JPEG in photo mode. On Pixel 8 Pro, the settings page notes that the control-enabling step is not required.
- Open the Camera settings and enable the documented RAW/JPEG control, unless you are using a Pixel 8 Pro and the control is already available.
- Return to photo mode.
- Select RAW + JPEG as the capture format.
- Take a test photo and confirm that both file types are being saved before relying on the setting for a shoot.
The test shot matters because the setting has two parts: exposing the control in settings and choosing the format in photo mode. Completing only the first step does not necessarily change the active capture format. If you change modes or reopen the app, check the format selector again before an important session.
Saving RAW + JPEG gives you an additional less-processed file alongside the JPEG, but Google’s settings documentation does not promise that RAW disables every computational operation in the camera. Do not use the RAW switch as proof that all AI-based processing has been turned off or restored. A Google Pixel Help Community response discusses RAW as a way to retain a less-processed file, but that is community guidance rather than a blanket Google guarantee about all processing.
RAW + JPEG also solves a different problem from Camera Coach. One controls what files are recorded; the other provides camera guidance. If your goal is to recover coaching prompts, changing file format will not restore them. If your goal is to preserve an additional file for later editing, turning on Camera Coach is unrelated.

Separate camera features from Google Photos tools
Pixel’s AI-related capabilities are not confined to the viewfinder. Google’s official Pixel feature overview includes tools such as Audio Magic Eraser and document scanning. Those functions belong to different workflows and may appear in Google Photos or another app rather than in the Camera settings.
If one of these tools disappeared after you changed an AI-related preference, identify the app and the exact tool first. Do not infer that the Camera Coach switch, RAW/JPEG control, or a Camera-app reset controls it. Google’s camera documentation reviewed for this issue does not define one universal setting that restores every camera and media feature, so use the individual tool’s own control and eligibility information.
This distinction prevents a common dead end: repeatedly changing camera settings while looking for an editing command. A scanning option, an audio-cleanup option, and a viewfinder coaching feature can have different menus, requirements, and release availability. Record where you last saw the tool and whether the problem affects capture, playback, or editing before choosing a fix.

When the Camera app itself is the problem
If the feature setting is correct but Camera freezes, closes, shows a black preview, or refuses to save a photo, treat the symptom as an app fault. Google recommends this progression:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Restart the phone. A restart clears temporary app and system states before you make more disruptive changes. After the phone starts, open Camera and test the same mode and feature again.
- Clear the Camera app cache. Open Android’s app controls for Camera and use the option to clear its cache. Cache clearing removes temporary files, not your saved photographs and videos. Reopen Camera and check whether the preview and feature menu behave normally.
- Install available updates. Check for updates to Pixel Camera and to Android. A menu or feature mismatch can result from a camera app and operating-system build being out of sync. Restart after updating if the phone requests it, then repeat the original test.
- Test in safe mode. Safe mode helps determine whether another installed app is interfering with Camera. If the problem disappears there, investigate recently installed or updated apps rather than repeatedly changing camera feature switches.
Perform these steps in order and retest the missing feature after each one. This gives you a useful stopping point: if a restart fixes the issue, no reset is needed; if cache clearing fixes it, the feature setting was probably not the root cause; if safe mode changes the behavior, look for an interfering app.
A working Camera app with a greyed-out Camera Coach control still needs the network, mode, and Guided Frame checks. Conversely, an app that crashes before its menus load needs app troubleshooting first. Do not interpret a black preview or a failure to save as evidence that an AI preference has disabled the camera.
For poor photos, follow the deeper quality checklist
Not every complaint after changing an AI setting is a software-toggle problem. If the camera opens but photos are blurry, hazy, dark, or unusually soft, Google’s quality guidance starts with the physical scene:
- Check the lighting and shooting conditions. Low light, motion, and difficult contrast can change the result without any feature being disabled.
- Make sure nothing covers the lens area, including a case edge, film, dirt, or a finger.
- Clean the lens area with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive materials that can scratch the cover.
Take another test image after each physical check. Compare the result in the same mode and lighting so that you do not mistake a different scene for an improvement. If only one mode looks poor, note that mode when seeking help; if every mode is affected, include that broader pattern.
If those checks do not help, Google’s deeper troubleshooting allows more disruptive app actions. Clearing Camera app storage resets the app’s configuration; Google’s guide says this does not delete saved photos or videos. You can also uninstall Camera updates and restart the phone when simpler steps fail. Because these actions remove preferences or roll back the app, record any custom camera settings you want to restore afterward.
Storage clearing is therefore not the first response to a greyed-out feature with a documented prerequisite. Use it when the app remains defective after restarting, cache clearing, updates, and physical checks, and understand that you may need to configure the app again.

Distinguish a setting problem from an eligibility problem
Use the symptom to choose the next action instead of cycling through every AI-related menu.
The feature is visible but switched off
Open that feature’s own control and turn it on. Camera Coach uses Camera > Camera Coach > Turn on; RAW + JPEG uses the RAW/JPEG control and the format selector in photo mode. Once enabled, repeat the feature in its supported workflow rather than assuming it applies globally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The feature is greyed out
Check documented prerequisites before resetting the app. For Camera Coach, confirm internet access, the rear camera, a supported mode, and the Guided Frame setting. A reset cannot substitute for an unmet prerequisite. If all conditions are satisfied and the control is still grey, document the device and software details before escalating.
The feature is missing because Camera will not load correctly
Use the restart, cache, update, and safe-mode sequence. Settings cannot be reached reliably while the app is crashing or the preview is failing. After each repair step, return to the same camera mode and check whether the control has returned.
The camera works but image quality changed
Check light, obstructions, and lens cleanliness first. Only then consider clearing Camera storage or uninstalling Camera updates, and understand that those steps reset configuration. A quality change alone does not prove that AI was disabled.
The feature appears on one Pixel but not another
Compare the exact model, Android build, Pixel Camera version, region, camera, and mode. Feature availability and menu labels can differ across those variables. Do not assume that a setting documented for one model, including the Pixel 8 Pro RAW/JPEG exception, follows the same path on another model.
What to record before asking for help
Pixel menus and feature availability can vary by device and software release. When a documented path does not match your phone, note:

- Exact Pixel model, including the Pro designation where relevant.
- Android version and build.
- Pixel Camera app version.
- Country or region.
- The camera mode, front or rear camera, and whether the phone is online.
- The exact symptom: missing control, greyed-out control, crash, black preview, or poor image quality.
Also record what changed immediately before the problem: whether you changed Guided Frame, selected a different camera mode, installed an update, or altered RAW/JPEG settings. These details let support distinguish an availability difference from a local configuration problem. They also prevent a RAW/JPEG instruction from being incorrectly applied to Camera Coach or to a Google Photos tool.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for one AI master switch. Pixel camera and media capabilities have separate controls.
- Assuming RAW means “no processing.” Google documents RAW + JPEG capture, not the elimination of every computational operation.
- Ignoring connectivity. Camera Coach needs a network connection even when the Camera app itself opens normally.
- Leaving Guided Frame on while diagnosing Camera Coach. Google identifies Guided Frame as a reason the Camera Coach control may be greyed out.
- Testing the wrong camera or mode. Camera Coach is documented for the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, and Night Sight modes, not as a universal control for every mode.
- Resetting the app before checking eligibility. Restarting or clearing storage will not make an unsupported mode, missing network connection, or conflicting Guided Frame setting eligible.
- Assuming a camera fault is an AI setting. A black preview, repeated crash, or failure to save needs app troubleshooting and, if unresolved, device support rather than repeated feature toggles.
- Forgetting the Pixel 8 Pro exception. The RAW/JPEG control-enabling step is not required there according to Google’s settings instructions.
- Clearing storage without noting preferences. Storage clearing resets app configuration even though saved photos and videos remain.
A compact restoration checklist
- Name the missing feature and the app where it belongs.
- Open that feature’s documented control rather than searching for a global AI switch.
- For Camera Coach, turn it on from Camera, confirm internet access, use the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight, and disable Guided Frame if necessary.
- For RAW + JPEG, enable the RAW/JPEG control where required and select RAW + JPEG in photo mode; remember the Pixel 8 Pro exception.
- If Camera is unstable, restart, clear its cache, update Pixel Camera and Android, and test safe mode.
- For persistent quality problems, inspect lighting and lens condition before clearing storage or uninstalling Camera updates.
- If the path still differs, provide the exact Pixel model, Android and Camera versions, region, mode, and symptom when seeking support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn Camera Coach back on after disabling it?
Open Camera, tap Camera Coach, and choose Turn on. Use the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight mode. If the control is grey, connect to the internet and turn off Guided Frame under Settings > Advanced > Guided Frame.
Why is Camera Coach greyed out?
Google identifies no network connection and Guided Frame being enabled as common blockers. Also verify that you are using the rear camera in Default Camera, Portrait, or Night Sight.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes RAW + JPEG turn off all Pixel AI processing?
No. Google documents RAW + JPEG as a capture-format option and does not promise that it disables every computational operation. It saves an additional less-processed file alongside the JPEG.
Do I need to enable a RAW/JPEG control on every Pixel?
Google’s settings instructions describe enabling the control before selecting RAW + JPEG, but note that this enabling step is not required on Pixel 8 Pro.
What should I do if the Camera app crashes after changing settings?
Restart the phone, clear the Camera app cache, install available Pixel Camera and Android updates, and test in safe mode. This sequence diagnoses app interference separately from feature eligibility.
Will clearing Camera storage delete my photos?
Google’s deeper Camera troubleshooting says clearing Camera storage resets app configuration but does not delete saved photos and videos. Record custom preferences first because they may need to be set again.
Why are my photos poor even though the camera opens?
Check lighting and shooting conditions, make sure nothing covers the lens area, and clean it with a soft lint-free cloth. If the problem persists, follow the deeper app troubleshooting steps.
The Bottom Line
Restore the specific Pixel feature you lost instead of searching for a universal AI switch. Camera Coach is turned on from Camera and depends on internet access, the rear camera, a supported mode, and Guided Frame being off. RAW + JPEG is a separate file-format control and does not guarantee that all computational processing is disabled. If Camera itself is unstable, restart, clear the cache, update Pixel Camera and Android, and test safe mode; reserve storage clearing or uninstalling updates for persistent problems.
