If Mac desktop icons seem to have disappeared, first check whether macOS is hiding them rather than deleting them. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Desktop & Stage Manager > Show Items, turn on On Desktop, and, if you use Stage Manager, turn on In Stage Manager as well. Then check Finder’s separate desktop setting for external disks and other connected hardware. If the icons still do not appear, search for the files and verify the Desktop folder and any iCloud Desktop & Documents configuration.
First, determine what “missing” means
Mac desktop problems usually fall into one of three categories:
- Desktop items are hidden. Files still exist, but macOS is not displaying their icons.
- Connected hardware is hidden. An external drive, USB device, or other storage volume is present but excluded from the desktop.
- The files moved, were grouped, or are no longer in the expected folder. A visibility setting cannot restore an item that was moved, deleted, or affected by a synchronization problem.
Use the setting that matches the symptom. The Show Items controls govern ordinary files and folders on the desktop. Finder’s Show these items on the desktop checkboxes govern connected hardware. Finder sidebar settings affect Finder windows, not desktop icons.

Turn desktop item visibility back on
Enable “On Desktop”
- Choose the Apple menu in the upper-left corner.
- Open System Settings.
- Select Desktop & Dock in the sidebar.
- Scroll to Desktop & Stage Manager.
- Under Show Items, turn on On Desktop.
When this option is off, macOS hides desktop items while leaving the files in their original locations. Apple’s Mac User Guide describes the behavior this way: “If this option is turned off, items on the desktop are hidden—click the desktop to show the items when you want to access them.” Turning the option on should make the files and folders visible without moving them.

Enable “In Stage Manager” when applicable
Stage Manager has a second visibility choice. If Stage Manager is active and In Stage Manager is off, desktop items can remain hidden even after On Desktop is enabled.
- Stay in System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Desktop & Stage Manager.
- Find Show Items.
- Turn on In Stage Manager.
This setting matters only when Stage Manager is being used. If you do not use Stage Manager, enabling On Desktop is the relevant change.
Make the desktop appear when you click the wallpaper
Sometimes the icons are available, but open windows cover the desktop. macOS has a separate Show Desktop behavior that controls what happens when you click the wallpaper.

Check the Show Desktop choice
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Choose Desktop & Dock.
- Review the Show Desktop option in the desktop and Stage Manager settings.
Depending on the selected behavior, clicking the wallpaper can always move windows aside, or can do so only while Stage Manager is active. Choose the behavior that fits how you work, then click an unobstructed area of the wallpaper to test it.
Temporarily turn off Stage Manager
If the desktop remains difficult to reach, disable Stage Manager temporarily from System Settings or Control Center. This removes Stage Manager’s window arrangement while you check the desktop. It does not delete files or change their folder locations.

Show external disks and connected hardware
An external drive missing from the desktop is a different issue from ordinary files being hidden. Finder controls whether storage devices, removable media, and other connected hardware appear as desktop icons.
- Open Finder.
- Choose Finder > Settings from the menu bar.
- Select the General tab.
- Under Show these items on the desktop, select the categories you want visible, such as connected servers, external disks, removable media, or CDs, DVDs, and iOS devices when those categories are available.
Reconnect the device after changing the checkbox. If it still does not appear, check whether it is listed in a Finder window under Locations. A device that is not listed there may have a cable, power, mount, or hardware problem rather than a desktop-visibility problem.

macOS can synchronize the Desktop and Documents folders through iCloud. This can make those folders available on multiple Apple devices, but it also means the folder shown on one Mac may not match the location you expect if synchronization has been changed.
Verify the files’ actual location
- Open a Finder window.
- Choose Go > Home, then open the Desktop folder.
- Look for the files that should be on the desktop.
- Also check iCloud Drive and its Desktop and Documents folders if synchronization is enabled.
If the files are in the Desktop folder but their icons are absent, return to Desktop & Dock > Desktop & Stage Manager > Show Items. If the files are elsewhere, move or copy them only after confirming which folder should be the active desktop location.
Review the sync setting before moving large groups of files
In System Settings, open your Apple Account settings, select iCloud, and review the settings for iCloud Drive and Desktop and Documents synchronization. The exact labels can vary by macOS release. Do not turn synchronization off impulsively if files are still uploading or downloading; first allow the Mac to finish and verify that the needed copies are present.

If synchronization was recently disabled, the files may remain in iCloud Drive or in a local archive location rather than appearing on the current desktop. Apple’s settings explain how synchronization works, but they cannot establish whether an individual file was moved, deleted, or affected by a sync conflict. Use Finder search and file locations to establish that for your Mac.
Expand Stacks when files are grouped
Stacks can make a busy desktop look empty because macOS groups files into a single stack instead of showing every icon separately.
- Click the desktop to make Finder active.
- Control-click an empty area of the desktop.
- If Use Stacks is selected, click a stack to expand it and inspect its contents.
- To show individual icons again, Control-click the desktop and select Use Stacks to turn it off.
Stacks group items by rules such as kind, date, or tags. Turning stacks off changes the presentation, not the files’ locations.
Make icons easier to see
Icons may be present but too small, tightly spaced, or difficult to read against the wallpaper. Finder’s desktop view options adjust the appearance without changing file contents.
- Control-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Choose Show View Options.
- Adjust Icon size, Grid spacing, and Text size until the items are readable.
- Close the view-options panel and check the desktop again.
If only a few icons seem absent, enlarge the icons first. A crowded arrangement can place items outside the area you are looking at, especially after changing display resolution or connecting another monitor.

Do not confuse desktop icons with the Finder sidebar
The Finder sidebar is the column inside Finder windows that can contain Favorites, iCloud, Locations, and Tags. A missing sidebar entry does not indicate that a desktop icon is hidden.
Restore a hidden sidebar
- Open a Finder window.
- Choose View > Show Sidebar if the sidebar is not visible.
- Open Finder > Settings > Sidebar.
- Select the Favorites, Locations, or Tags categories you want listed.
These choices affect Finder windows only. They do not control whether files, folders, or disks appear on the desktop.
Search for files that are not on the desktop
When the visibility settings are correct and an item is still absent, locate the file before assuming it was deleted.
Search from Finder
- Open Finder.
- Use the search field in the Finder window.
- Enter the file or folder name, or a distinctive part of it.
- Use the search controls to narrow the results by kind, date, or location when needed.
- Open the result’s containing folder and note its path.
Check the Mac’s local storage as well as iCloud Drive. A search result can reveal that the file was saved in Downloads, a project folder, a removable disk, or an iCloud location rather than on the desktop.

Spotlight can locate files by name and metadata across indexed locations. Search for a distinctive filename, then inspect the result’s location. If a file does not appear in either Finder or Spotlight, check the Trash and any external or network volume where it may have been saved.

Check the Trash before taking recovery action
If you find the item in the Trash, Control-click it and choose Put Back. If it is not there, a visibility change will not recover it. The available next step depends on whether another copy exists in iCloud, a backup, or the original external device; the desktop settings themselves provide no deleted-file recovery.

If the standard fixes do not work
Confirm which desktop you are viewing
With multiple displays or Spaces, each desktop can show a different arrangement. Move the pointer to the desktop where the files were originally saved and click the wallpaper before checking the icons. If the windows are covering that desktop, use the Show Desktop behavior described above.
Check the Desktop folder directly
Opening the Desktop folder in Finder separates a display problem from a location problem. If the files are listed there, focus on Show Items, Stage Manager, stacks, and view options. If the folder is empty, search other locations and review synchronization before changing files.
Verify external volumes in Finder
For an external disk, look under Finder’s Locations section. If the volume is listed there but not on the desktop, correct the General-tab checkbox. If it is not listed at all, reconnect it and investigate the connection or the device rather than repeatedly changing desktop settings.
Allow synchronization to settle
After a Mac signs in, changes Apple Account settings, or reconnects to a network, iCloud Drive may need time to update. Keep the Mac connected to power and a reliable network while checking whether the files appear in iCloud Drive. Do not create duplicate copies in several folders until you know which copy is current.
Differences between macOS versions
Apple’s current Mac User Guide pages use the labels Desktop & Dock, Desktop & Stage Manager, Show Items, and In Stage Manager. Older macOS releases may place similar controls in different sections or use slightly different wording. If a label is not present, search System Settings for Desktop, Stage Manager, or Show Items, and use Finder’s General and Sidebar tabs for Finder-specific controls.
The guide pages cited by Apple are identified as Mac User Guide version 27, but that guide-version number is not a guarantee that every installed macOS release displays identical labels. Follow the setting names shown on your Mac.
How to avoid mistaking a display change for data loss
- When all icons disappear together, check Show Items before moving or restoring files.
- When only disks disappear, check Finder’s General desktop checkboxes.
- When one file is absent, search by name and inspect its containing folder.
- When a file appears in a stack, expand the stack before changing storage settings.
- When Finder navigation entries disappear, restore the sidebar rather than changing desktop visibility.
- When iCloud Desktop and Documents is involved, verify the synchronized location before creating another copy.
These checks restore visibility when macOS is hiding the items. They also identify the point at which the problem is no longer a desktop-display issue and requires locating the file, checking synchronization, or examining the storage device.
