If Android Auto lost apps, stopped connecting, or no longer shows a familiar feature after a phone update, fix it in this order: identify exactly what disappeared, check Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher, re-enable any app disabled by Samsung battery management, restart both phone and car, clear Android Auto’s cache, replace a suspect USB cable, then verify vehicle compatibility, firmware, Android-version requirements, and feature rollout limits. A hidden launcher tile, a disabled app, a failed wired connection, and a feature that has not reached your account require different fixes.
First identify what actually disappeared
An Android Auto update can expose several unrelated problems at once. The fastest recovery comes from matching the symptom to the right layer instead of repeatedly reinstalling apps.
| What you see | Most likely layer | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| The app or tile is absent from the Android Auto launcher, but it remains on the phone | Launcher customization or an app disabled by battery management | Open Customize launcher; on Samsung, open the app and review unused-app settings |
| The phone charges but Android Auto does not start over USB | Cable, USB data path, phone cache, or head-unit setting | Restart both systems, then try a short direct data cable |
| Wireless Android Auto will not connect, or calls and messages do not work | Bluetooth pairing or wireless requirements | Check the car’s Bluetooth Calls and Audio switches and pair again if necessary |
| The connection works, but a newly announced assistant feature is missing | Server-side rollout or regional, vehicle, device, or language eligibility | Check requirements and rollout limits; an app update alone may not activate it |
| Nothing connects in one car but it works in another | Vehicle, receiver firmware, compatibility, or infotainment configuration | Check Android Auto is enabled in the head unit and update receiver firmware |
Do not assume that a missing launcher icon means Android Auto was uninstalled. Android Auto is built into phones running Android 10 and later, so the service can be present even when its icon is not visible in the app drawer.
Restore a hidden app in the Android Auto launcher
Android Auto maintains its own launcher list. Changing the phone’s normal app-drawer layout does not necessarily change this list.

- On the phone, open Settings.
- Tap Connected Devices.
- Open Connection Preferences, then Android Auto. Menu names can vary slightly by phone software; searching Settings for Android Auto is a reliable shortcut.
- Tap Customize launcher.
- Find the missing app and remove its hidden or unchecked state. Restore the order of icons if the update rearranged them.
- Exit Settings. Disconnect and reconnect the car, or stop and restart Android Auto, so the launcher refreshes.
This change affects visibility, not whether the underlying app is installed. If the app is not listed at all, continue to the Samsung and phone-side checks below rather than repeatedly rearranging the launcher.
Re-enable apps disabled by Samsung battery management
Samsung phones can temporarily disable apps that have not been used. A disabled app may still appear in the phone’s app list, yet Android Auto will remove it from the in-car launcher until it is enabled again.
- Open the missing app once from the phone. This can be enough to mark it as active.
- Open the phone’s battery or device-care settings and look for Auto-disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep.
- Turn off the relevant automatic-disable option, or remove the app from the unused or sleeping list.
- Return to Android Auto’s Customize launcher screen and confirm the app is visible.
- Restart the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system before testing again.
Samsung uses different labels across One UI versions and regions. If you cannot find the exact wording, search Settings for unused apps, sleeping apps, or auto-disable. The important distinction is that this is an operating-system battery action, not an Android Auto launcher preference.
Restart and clear Android Auto’s cache
A restart clears temporary connection state in both devices. Perform a complete restart rather than merely locking the phone or turning the car’s screen off.

- Restart the phone.
- Restart the head unit or turn the vehicle fully off and allow the infotainment system to power down.
- Reconnect only after both devices have finished booting.
On a Galaxy phone, Samsung documents this cache path: Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache. Clearing the cache removes temporary files; it does not remove your phone’s personal files. After clearing it, install any available phone, Android Auto, and receiver software updates, then restart once more.
If the problem is only a launcher tile, clear-cache work is usually unnecessary until the launcher customization and Samsung battery checks fail. For a connection that worked before the update and now fails, cache clearing is a reasonable phone-side step before resetting every pairing.
Fix a wired Android Auto connection
A USB cable can provide power while its data lines are damaged, poorly fitted, or incompatible. That is why a phone may charge normally even though Android Auto does not launch.
Use the cable Google recommends
- Choose a high-quality USB data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter).
- Use a cable that fits the phone and the vehicle’s USB port directly.
- Do not use a USB hub, extension, adapter chain, or loose intermediate connector.
- Try the cable supplied with the phone, or a USB-IF-certified data cable.
- Inspect both ends for bent contacts, debris, looseness, or visible damage.
Google’s Android Auto Help states: "If Android Auto had worked properly before and no longer works now, replace your USB cable and that will likely fix the issue." Treat that as a first-line diagnostic for a previously working wired setup, not as a guarantee that every failure is cable-related.

Test the complete USB path
- Disconnect other USB accessories from the vehicle.
- Plug the phone directly into the port marked for smartphone projection or Android Auto, if the vehicle labels one.
- Unlock the phone and accept any connection prompts.
- Try a second known-good short data cable.
- If the second cable works, retire the original cable even if it still charges the phone.
- If neither cable works, test the phone in another compatible vehicle or test another compatible phone in the same vehicle. This separates a phone fault from a head-unit or port fault.
A USB-C cable’s connector shape does not prove that it supports reliable data. Length, shielding, connector fit, and actual data wiring all matter for Android Auto.
Repair wireless Android Auto and Bluetooth pairing
Wireless Android Auto depends on the initial Bluetooth relationship and on the vehicle’s wireless projection support. A phone update can leave an old pairing partially intact: the phone may show as paired, while calls, audio, or Android Auto negotiation fails.
- Open the vehicle’s Bluetooth device list and select the paired phone.
- Confirm that Calls and Audio are enabled for that pairing.
- On the phone, verify Bluetooth is on and that the car is the selected device.
- If either vehicle switch cannot be enabled, remove the pairing on both sides.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system.
- Pair the phone with the car again, then accept the Android Auto prompts.
Do not judge wireless compatibility by Bluetooth alone. A car can support hands-free calls but not wireless Android Auto projection. The head unit must support Android Auto, and the phone must meet the wireless Android-version requirement.
Check the vehicle and receiver, not just the phone
Android Auto is a two-device system. A phone update cannot correct an incompatible car, disabled projection setting, or outdated aftermarket receiver firmware.

- Install current firmware for the receiver using the manufacturer’s documented procedure.
- Restart the infotainment system after changing its settings or firmware.
- Try the vehicle’s other compatible USB port if one is provided; some ports are charge-only.
Forget old cars when switching vehicles
If the phone has accumulated stale pairings, Android Auto provides a reset option. Open Android Auto settings and go to Previously connected cars > Forget all cars. Pair the intended vehicle again from scratch. Use this step when several cars appear, when the phone repeatedly connects to the wrong vehicle, or when a formerly trusted pairing survives an update but no longer completes.
Forgetting cars removes saved vehicle relationships; it does not erase your phone’s general Bluetooth history or uninstall Android Auto. You will need to approve pairing and projection prompts again.
Verify Android and Android Auto requirements
| Connection or feature | Requirement stated by Google | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Most wired Android Auto connections | Android 9 or later | A phone below Android 9 cannot meet the current requirement even if its USB port and cable work |
| Wireless Android Auto and select newer vehicles | Android 11 or later | Wireless support has a stricter version requirement than most wired setups |
| Android Auto installation on the phone | Built into Android 10 and later | No launcher icon does not necessarily mean the service was removed |
Also verify that the specific vehicle or receiver supports the connection type you are attempting. Meeting the phone-version requirement does not make an incompatible head unit compatible.

Understand features that have not rolled out yet
Not every missing feature is broken. Google says the transition to Gemini on Android Auto is a server-side update rolling out over time. Server-side delivery means the feature can remain absent after a phone or Android Auto update has installed successfully.

Availability can vary by country, original-equipment manufacturer, device, and language. Two phones on the same Android release may therefore show different assistant capabilities, and the same phone may show different behavior in different vehicles or regions. Do not factory-reset the phone or replace a working cable solely because a staged assistant feature is not visible.
Separate a rollout delay from a local fault
- If existing navigation, media, calls, and messaging still work, but only a newly announced assistant feature is absent, rollout eligibility is more likely than a connection failure.
- If the entire Android Auto launcher is missing, the phone never connects, or every app disappears, use the launcher, cache, cable, Bluetooth, and vehicle checks in this guide.
- If the feature appears on the phone but not in the car, confirm that the vehicle and language are supported before changing phone settings.
Google’s feature availability can change without a corresponding app-store installation. Treat current behavior as potentially time- and region-dependent rather than assuming an update failed.
Use this recovery order when several symptoms overlap
- Classify the symptom: launcher tile, disabled app, wired connection, wireless pairing, vehicle compatibility, or staged feature.
- Open Android Auto settings: restore visibility and order under Customize launcher.
- Check Samsung battery controls: open the missing app and disable automatic unused-app management if applicable.
- Restart both sides: reboot the phone and infotainment system.
- Clear cache: on Galaxy, use Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear cache.
- For wired use: replace the cable with a short, direct, high-quality USB data cable under 1 meter.
- For wireless use: verify Bluetooth Calls and Audio, then unpair and pair again if a switch cannot be enabled.
- Check the car: confirm compatibility, Android Auto activation, receiver firmware, and a data-capable USB port.
- Reset vehicle pairings if needed: use Previously connected cars > Forget all cars, then pair the intended vehicle.
- Check requirements and rollout status: compare Android versions, connection type, vehicle support, country, device, and language eligibility.
Wired versus wireless: choose the diagnostic path
| Aspect | Wired | Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Main dependency | Short, reliable USB data cable and a data-capable vehicle port | Bluetooth pairing plus a vehicle and phone that support wireless projection |
| Typical first fix | Replace the cable; remove hubs and extensions | Check Calls and Audio, then unpair and pair again |
| Android requirement | Android 9+ for most connections | Android 11+ for wireless Android Auto and select newer vehicles |
| Trade-off | More predictable data path and charging, but dependent on cable condition | No cable during driving, but more dependent on pairing, wireless support, and vehicle firmware |
When troubleshooting, test one variable at a time. Changing the phone, cable, vehicle, and Bluetooth pairing simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which action solved the problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen the feature is still missing
After completing the relevant branch, record what works: whether the phone charges, whether the car appears in Bluetooth, whether Android Auto opens over USB, which launcher apps are visible, and whether another vehicle or phone succeeds. That information identifies the remaining boundary.
- Only one app is absent: revisit Customize launcher and Samsung unused-app controls.
- All wired connections fail: test another short data cable and another compatible phone or vehicle to isolate the USB port, head unit, or phone.
- Wireless calls work but projection does not: check wireless Android Auto support and Android 11-or-later eligibility.
- One vehicle fails while another works: focus on head-unit settings, receiver firmware, compatibility, and saved-car reset.
- Core Android Auto works but a new assistant feature does not: treat it as a server-side, country, OEM, device, or language rollout issue unless Google lists your setup as eligible.
There is no dated independent prevalence study establishing how often each cause occurs. The practical order above follows the official troubleshooting guidance: fix the least invasive phone and cable conditions first, then reset pairings and investigate the vehicle, while recognizing that staged features may not be locally repairable.
