If Excel shows numbers across the column headings instead of letters, it is using R1C1 reference style. Turn that option off to restore the usual A1 headings: A, B, C, and so on. The setting is in a different place on Windows and Mac.
Change numbered column headings back to letters
Excel for Windows
- Select File > Options > Formulas.
- Under Working with formulas, clear R1C1 reference style.
- Select OK if prompted. The column headings should display letters again.

Excel for Mac
- Select Excel > Preferences.
- Under Formulas and Lists, choose Calculation.
- Clear Use R1C1 reference style.

What R1C1 means—and why the headings changed
Excel has two ways to label cell locations. Its default, A1 style, uses letters for columns and numbers for rows. R1C1 style numbers both dimensions, so the cell in row 2 and column 2 is written R2C2. R1C1 references can also describe a position relative to the current cell: R[-2]C means two rows above in the same column.

The setting affects how Excel displays references; it does not mean the worksheet has lost its columns or that the data has been converted. Microsoft notes that R1C1 can be useful in macros when calculating row and column positions. Microsoft’s overview of Excel formulas and references

What if the headings are still numbers?
- Check that you cleared the R1C1 option in the correct Excel installation: Windows and Mac use different menus.
- Reopen the relevant Formulas or Calculation settings and verify the checkbox is off.
- Once the setting is off, A1-style headings use letters through XFD, with rows numbered through 1,048,576. Microsoft’s Excel specifications and limits
