Firefox can bring back the familiar Menu bar, an always-visible Bookmarks Toolbar, the window Title bar, and an optional Bookmarks Menu button without installing an extension. Open Menu → More Tools → Customize Toolbar, use the Toolbars control to turn on the bars you need, choose Always Show for the Bookmarks Toolbar, and select Done. The same controls work on current Firefox desktop releases on Windows, macOS, and Linux, although exact window framing differs by operating system.
What “classic layout” can mean in Firefox
Firefox no longer has a single switch that recreates every pixel of an old release. Its supported customization controls can restore the named interface elements that people usually mean by “classic”: the traditional Menu bar, the Bookmarks Toolbar, the Title bar, and a toolbar button that opens bookmarks. Colors, tab shapes, spacing, and other theme details depend on the Firefox version, operating system, selected theme, and density setting.
- Menu bar: the row containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help (the exact menu names vary by platform).
- Bookmarks Toolbar: a horizontal row for bookmark buttons and folders below the navigation controls.
- Title bar: the operating-system window title area, when Firefox exposes that option for the platform.
- Bookmarks Menu: an optional toolbar item that opens bookmarks in a menu; it is not placed on the toolbar by default.
These elements are independent. You can show the Menu bar while leaving the Bookmarks Toolbar hidden, or display the Bookmarks Toolbar without the Menu bar. Configure only the parts that match your workflow.

No extension, add-on, hardware accessory, or separate utility is required. The controls are part of Firefox’s desktop interface. If you have spent time arranging buttons, note their current positions before using any reset command. Also decide whether you want a permanent bookmark row, a row that appears only on a new tab, or no row at all; that choice affects how much vertical space each browser window uses.

Restore the Menu bar and Bookmarks Toolbar together
The Customize Toolbar screen is the most complete route because it lets you enable several bars and rearrange controls in one session.
- Open the Firefox application menu by selecting the menu button at the right end of the navigation toolbar.
- Choose More Tools, then select Customize Toolbar.
- In the customization view, open the Toolbars control.
- Enable Menu Bar.
- Open the Toolbars control again and enable Bookmarks Toolbar.
- If you also want the operating-system window caption, enable Title Bar.
- Select Done to apply the layout and leave customization.
The Menu bar normally appears near the top of the window, while the Bookmarks Toolbar occupies a separate row. If the bookmark row appears only while viewing a new tab, change its display rule as described below.
Firefox saves the selections when you leave customization. You can return to the same screen later to move buttons, remove optional items, or change a bar’s visibility without rebuilding the rest of the layout. Turning on one bar does not automatically turn on the others, so check each item you want in the Toolbars control before selecting Done.
A quick right-click route
When you only need to reveal a hidden bar, right-click unused space on the tab strip or toolbar. The context menu can expose Menu Bar and Bookmarks Toolbar visibility choices directly, as well as a Customize Toolbar command. This is faster than opening the full customization view, but it is less useful when you also need to rearrange buttons or add the Bookmarks Menu item.
Make the Bookmarks Toolbar stay visible
Firefox provides three visibility choices for the Bookmarks Toolbar. The setting controls when the row is rendered; it does not delete bookmarks.

To select a rule, right-click an empty area of the tab strip or toolbar, point to Bookmarks Toolbar, and choose Always Show, Never Show, or Only Show on New Tab. You can also make the choice from the Toolbars control in Customize Toolbar. If the row is visible only on a new tab, Always Show is the setting that restores the permanently visible behavior.
Choose Always Show when bookmark folders are part of your daily navigation and you want them available while reading any site. Choose Only Show on New Tab when you want the folders while launching tabs but prefer more room once a page is open. Never Show leaves the saved data intact and is appropriate when you rely on the Sidebar or a menu instead. Changing between these choices is immediate and does not move or erase bookmark entries.

The Menu bar’s Bookmarks menu and the Bookmarks Toolbar are different features. If you want a single button that opens your bookmark folders, add the optional Bookmarks Menu item:
- Open the application menu, choose More Tools, and select Customize Toolbar.
- Locate Bookmarks Menu in the available toolbar items.
- Drag it to the navigation toolbar or another permitted toolbar position. A placement marker shows where it will be inserted.
- Select Done.
The item is not shown on a newly customized toolbar unless you place it yourself. Drag it near the address bar if you want a prominent replacement for an older bookmark-menu button, or place it beside other library controls. If you later decide that the button is unnecessary, reopen Customize Toolbar and drag it back to the available-items area, then select Done.
Three ways to reach the same controls
Choose the route that fits what is currently visible. The resulting settings are the same.

If a right-click lands on a button, tab, page, or text field instead of an empty area, the expected toolbar menu may not appear. Move the pointer to unused space between controls, or use Customize Toolbar from the application menu.

Once the Menu bar is visible, View → Toolbars is a convenient maintenance path. It is especially useful when you want to toggle a bar temporarily and do not need to change button positions. If the Menu bar is hidden, use the application-menu or right-click route first; View cannot be used until that row is available.
Show the Title bar when you need window identification
The Title bar is separate from the Menu bar. Enable it in Customize Toolbar → Toolbars → Title Bar, then choose Done. On some operating systems, Firefox integrates the window title into the tab or system frame, so the exact position and typography are controlled by the desktop environment. Enabling the option restores the available title area; it does not force Windows, macOS, or a Linux desktop to render an identical frame.
If you compare Firefox with screenshots from another computer, differences in window borders do not necessarily indicate a failed setting. The Title bar option controls whether Firefox requests that title area; the operating system and its window theme determine how the area is drawn. Test it with Firefox in a normal, non-full-screen window.
Adjust density for a tighter, older-style arrangement
Firefox’s density setting changes the vertical spacing around controls. A compact setting can make the interface occupy less room, but it is not a historical-theme switch and does not recreate every previous toolbar design.
Firefox 157 and later
Mozilla Support states that starting with Firefox version 157, Compact mode can be enabled directly in Firefox Settings. Open Firefox Settings, find the browser appearance or density controls, choose Compact when it is offered, and then return to Customize Toolbar to verify the result. The label and location can vary slightly as Firefox reorganizes Settings, so use the Settings search field for “density” or “compact” if necessary.
Use this supported Settings route first. It changes spacing without requiring hidden preferences, and you can switch back to the normal density from the same control if the tighter arrangement makes controls harder to use. Density is independent of whether Menu Bar or Bookmarks Toolbar is enabled, so changing it will not by itself reveal a missing row.
Earlier versions
Older releases may hide Compact from the normal interface. Mozilla documents an about:config workaround: enter about:config in the address bar, accept the warning, search for browser.compactmode.show, and set the preference to true. Compact can then appear in Customize Toolbar. Mozilla labels this earlier method unsupported and warns that Configuration Editor changes can affect browser stability, security, and performance. Treat it as an advanced, reversible experiment rather than a first-line fix. Use the built-in Settings control whenever your installed version provides it.
When the toolbar or Menu bar is missing entirely
Exit full-screen mode
Full-screen mode can hide the tab strip, toolbar, and application controls. Exit full screen using your operating system’s full-screen command or Firefox’s full-screen toggle, then open Customize Toolbar again. A hidden toolbar is often a display state rather than a lost configuration.

macOS places the application menu in the system menu bar for whichever application is active. Click the Firefox window before looking for Firefox’s menus. If another application is selected, its File, Edit, and View menus will be shown instead, which can make Firefox’s controls seem absent.

Use the context menu when the application menu is hard to find
Right-click an empty part of the tab strip or toolbar and select Customize Toolbar. From there, open Toolbars and enable the missing bar. This route is useful when the application menu button is off-screen or when a toolbar row has been collapsed.
Check whether the row is set to New Tab only
If you can see the Bookmarks Toolbar on a new tab but not on websites, it is set to Only Show on New Tab. Choose Always Show from the toolbar’s context menu or Customize Toolbar. No bookmark data needs to be imported or repaired.
Check the click location before assuming the toolbar is gone
The context menu is sensitive to where you click. A right-click on a tab opens tab commands, while a right-click on a button or page opens a different menu. Move to a genuinely blank section of the tab strip or toolbar. If no blank area is available, the application-menu route to Customize Toolbar is the more reliable option.

When buttons have disappeared, rows overlap, or customization no longer behaves normally, Customize Toolbar includes Restore Defaults. Use it only after recording any deliberate placements you want to recreate.
- Open Menu → More Tools → Customize Toolbar.
- Select Restore Defaults.
- Read the confirmation and accept the reset.
- Re-enable Menu Bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, or Title Bar if your preferred layout requires them, then select Done.
This is a broad reset, not a targeted repair. Mozilla warns that it also changes vertical tabs back to horizontal tabs and resets the default theme. Any custom button positions and density choices may need to be set again. Do not use Restore Defaults merely to make the Bookmarks Toolbar visible; change its visibility setting instead.
Think of Restore Defaults as a last resort for a damaged arrangement. It can resolve several related layout problems at once, but it also removes intentional customizations. Afterward, work through the Toolbars list one item at a time, set the Bookmarks Toolbar visibility rule, choose your density, and drag only the buttons you actually use. This makes it easier to identify which change fixed the problem and avoids repeating a broad reset unnecessarily.
Where bookmarks remain available
Hiding a toolbar does not remove saved bookmarks. The Sidebar provides a persistent or on-demand bookmarks view, and the Menu bar’s Bookmarks menu is available once the Menu bar is enabled. The optional Bookmarks Menu button gives you a compact, one-click menu without displaying a full-width bookmark row. These alternatives are useful on small screens or when you want the classic controls without dedicating another horizontal line to bookmarks.

Because visibility is separate from storage, changing from Always Show to Never Show is safe for the bookmark records themselves. The choice only changes which interface surface exposes them. If a folder or bookmark is missing from a particular surface, check another enabled surface, such as the Sidebar or Bookmarks menu, before attempting a toolbar reset.
What this restoration cannot guarantee
Firefox’s built-in controls restore functions and named interface regions, not every visual detail from a particular historical release. A previous version may have used different tab geometry, icon artwork, spacing, colors, or window decorations. Themes and operating-system conventions also affect the final appearance. If your goal is the old arrangement of controls, use Customize Toolbar to drag available items into the closest practical order; do not assume that enabling Menu Bar and Bookmarks Toolbar activates a universal “classic theme.”
The documented controls also cannot make an unavailable historical button reappear if that button is no longer part of the current toolbar inventory. They expose the bars and items Firefox currently supports. This is why restoring the classic functions is realistic, while promising an exact pixel-for-pixel copy of a much older release is not.

Verification checklist
After selecting Done, verify the result in the order below:
- The Menu bar is visible and its File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, and related menus open normally.
- The Bookmarks Toolbar follows your chosen rule: Always Show, Never Show, or Only Show on New Tab.
- Bookmark folders and buttons open the expected saved items.
- The optional Bookmarks Menu button appears where you dropped it, if you added one.
- The Title bar is visible if you enabled it and your operating system supports that window option.
- Full-screen mode is off when you are testing whether bars are present.
- Your density choice has taken effect without changing unrelated controls.
If one check fails, change only that setting first. For example, a bookmark row that appears on New Tab has a visibility-rule issue, not a bookmark-storage issue; a missing Menu bar can be addressed from Toolbars without resetting every button.
Frequently asked questions
Can I restore the Menu bar without showing the Bookmarks Toolbar?
Yes. In Customize Toolbar, enable Menu Bar and leave Bookmarks Toolbar set to Never Show. Each bar has its own visibility control.
Why does the Bookmarks Toolbar appear on a new tab but vanish on every website?
That behavior indicates the Only Show on New Tab setting. Change the toolbar’s visibility to Always Show from the right-click menu or Customize Toolbar.
Will Restore Defaults delete my bookmarks?
No. It resets toolbar arrangement, related appearance choices, vertical-tab placement, and the default theme; it does not erase saved bookmark records. Export or back up important custom settings if you need to reproduce them later.
Is the about:config compact-mode method recommended?
Only when your Firefox version lacks the supported Settings control and you understand the risk. Mozilla describes the preference change as an unsupported workaround and warns that Configuration Editor changes can affect stability, security, and performance.
Can I make the current Firefox look exactly like a very old release?
Not through the documented toolbar controls alone. They restore the Menu bar, Bookmarks Toolbar, Title bar, and available buttons, but they do not provide a universal pixel-for-pixel historical design switch.
Is the Menu bar hidden by default?
Yes. Firefox normally hides it, so use the application-menu Customize Toolbar route or right-click an empty toolbar area and select Menu Bar. Once it is enabled, you can also use View → Toolbars for quick visibility changes.
Do I need to install an extension or buy anything?
No. Firefox’s built-in customization controls perform this restoration. A physical accessory, repair item, or printed manual is not needed.
Why can’t I find the Bookmarks Menu button in the toolbar?

What if the controls disappear only in full-screen mode?
Exit full-screen mode and test again. Full screen can hide the tab strip, toolbar, and application controls even though your saved toolbar configuration is unchanged.
Why does macOS show another application’s menus?
The macOS menu bar belongs to the active application. Click the Firefox window so Firefox is selected, then look for its File, Edit, View, and other menus.
Does enabling the Title bar make every operating system look the same?
No. It enables the title-area option that Firefox exposes, but the desktop environment controls the exact position, typography, borders, and other window-frame details.
