First, open File Explorer directly with Windows logo key + E, from Start, or from its taskbar icon. If it opens but double-clicking a folder still produces an error or launches the wrong app, Explorer is probably still available; the failing action may be tied to an association or behavior left by the file manager you removed. Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps to inspect the relevant supported file or link association. There is no universal Windows setting that resets every third-party folder-opening behavior, so the right repair depends on exactly what fails and which app was uninstalled.

Check whether File Explorer itself opens

Before changing defaults, test Explorer independently of the folder or shortcut that is causing trouble. Press Windows logo key + E, search for File Explorer from Start, or select its taskbar icon. These are separate ways to launch the built-in Windows app and help establish whether Windows can start Explorer at all.

If Explorer opens this way, but opening a folder through another route produces an “app not found” message or starts the wrong program, that points to a problem with the former manager’s handling of that action rather than proof that File Explorer has been removed. Treat this as a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee: note exactly which action fails and the wording of any error before changing settings.

  • Explorer opens directly, but a folder shortcut fails: investigate the association or shortcut behavior involved in that route.
  • Explorer opens directly, but double-clicking folders fails: the former manager may have changed a folder-opening behavior that is not exposed as an ordinary file-type choice.
  • Explorer opens, but one document type uses the wrong program: that is the kind of file association Windows’ Default apps page is designed to change.
  • Explorer does not open by any of these methods: this is broader than simply choosing a default app. Continue with the default-app checks if relevant, but do not assume they will repair an Explorer launch problem.

Also test an ordinary navigation path. Open Explorer, select a known folder in the navigation pane, and then open a second folder from within that window. If navigation works while a desktop shortcut, taskbar jump-list item, or another application’s “open folder” command fails, the problem is probably tied to that particular route rather than to all folder access.

In Windows 11, File Explorer opens to Home by default. Home was called Quick access before Windows 11 version 22H2. Seeing Home rather than a particular drive or folder is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the wrong file manager is opening. The opening location and the application that handles a folder are separate questions.

Inspect Windows’ supported default-app settings

  1. Open Settings. Select Start > Settings, then go to Apps > Default apps.
  2. Search for the affected type or link. Use the search field on the Default apps page to look up the relevant file type or link type, if you know it.
  3. Review the current app. Select the result to see the app Windows has associated with it and the available alternatives.
  4. Choose an available app when the association is listed. Select the app you want for that specific type and follow the on-screen confirmation, if shown.
  5. Check app-level associations when useful. On the same page, select an app to review the file types or link types Windows lists for it. Change only the associations that match the behavior you are trying to restore.

Windows presents defaults by supported file type, link type, or app. Choosing File Explorer for one listed association does not necessarily restore every file, link, folder, or protocol behavior changed by another program. A folder is not simply another ordinary document extension, and Microsoft’s current consumer-facing instructions do not describe one universal folder-association reset for every replacement file manager or Windows build.

Use the page as an inspection tool as well as a repair tool. Write down what Windows currently shows before selecting a replacement. If several entries point to the uninstalled manager, change only entries that are clearly related to the symptom. This makes it easier to tell which change helped and avoids altering unrelated document or web-link defaults.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the exact folder-opening action is not listed, do not guess at an extension or assume that changing a nearby file type will fix it. The relevant setting may be specific to the removed manager or to the way that version of Windows handled folder opening. Check the former app’s own uninstall or reset instructions for that exact app and Windows version.

Match the repair to what is still broken

What you see What to try Scope and limitation
One supported file or link type opens in the wrong app Use Settings > Apps > Default apps and change that listed association. This changes the association you select; it does not promise to reset unrelated types or folder-opening behavior.
Explorer opens directly, but a folder-opening action fails Identify the failing route and consult the uninstalled manager’s guidance for that behavior. The appropriate fix can vary by manager and Windows build. There is no universal folder reset established for this situation.
A shortcut displays an app-not-found message Test the same location by navigating to it from a new Explorer window, then inspect the shortcut or application that launched it. The shortcut or calling application may be stale even when Explorer itself works.
The former app is still installed and has a repair or reset option Use its app-specific instructions only if they address the problem you have. Repairing or resetting an app is not a general replacement for changing a Windows default, and it may not apply after the app has been uninstalled.
Several apps or Windows features have installation or removal problems Use Microsoft’s broader app troubleshooting guidance, reserving more disruptive recovery for persistent, wider problems. System recovery is a broader response, not a routine first step for changing one default.

This comparison is important because the least disruptive fix is usually the one that matches the scope of the failure. A single document association calls for a single association change. A broken Explorer launch, multiple damaged applications, or repeated installation errors point to a different class of problem and should not be treated as a missing default alone.

If a folder still opens incorrectly

1. Pin down the exact action

Try the same folder in more than one way: open Explorer directly and navigate to it, use the folder’s shortcut if that is where the failure occurs, and test the action that previously launched the replacement. Record whether Explorer opens, which app appears, and the complete error message. This separates a broken direct launch from a failure tied to a particular route.

For example, compare these observations:

  • Pressing Windows logo key + E opens Explorer, and browsing to the folder works.
  • Double-clicking that folder from the desktop produces an app-not-found message.
  • A program’s Open or Browse button launches a different application.

Those are not necessarily the same defect. The first test confirms that the built-in app is present and launchable. The second may involve a folder-opening handler or stale shortcut. The third may be controlled by the program making the request. Keep the observations separate instead of applying one setting to all three.

2. Look for a matching supported association

Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and search for the file or link type involved, if there is one. If Windows displays a relevant association and offers File Explorer as an available app, select it for that association. If there is no relevant entry, or the behavior is specifically opening folders, do not create a workaround based on a guessed type. The visible Default apps controls do not necessarily expose every app-specific folder behavior.

Windows may show an app-centric view as well. Selecting an application lets you review the file and link types registered for it. This can reveal that a replacement manager claimed several document types even though the symptom was first noticed while opening a folder. Review each listed type and decide whether it actually belongs to the behavior you want to restore. Do not assume that selecting Explorer in an app list automatically claims every possible association.

3. Use instructions for the removed manager

Different file managers can register or handle defaults differently. Look for that app’s own uninstall, reset, or support instructions, matching them to the version you used and your Windows version. Instructions for one manager are not proof that another leaves the same settings behind. Microsoft’s general instructions for changing supported defaults explain the Windows settings page, but do not promise that it repairs every remnant of every third-party manager.

If the manager was removed recently, check whether its documentation describes restoring defaults before uninstalling or repairing the application. If the manager remains installed, its own reset or repair command may be relevant; if it is already gone, that option may no longer be available. Avoid reinstalling an application solely to follow an unverified cleanup recipe unless the publisher’s instructions specifically require that sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Restart only when the symptom justifies it

A restart can be reasonable after an installation or removal operation if Windows or the app’s instructions request one. It is not, by itself, a guaranteed way to recreate a missing folder association. If Explorer launches normally and only one route fails, restart after documenting the symptom, then retest the same route. If nothing changes, return to the association and app-specific checks instead of repeating restarts indefinitely.

5. Avoid broad fixes for a narrow default problem

Do not start by editing registry association keys or importing a registry file. Those are not established as the supported first-line consumer repair for this scenario. Registry changes can also affect more than the one action being tested, making it harder to identify the original cause or reverse an unintended change.

Likewise, resetting Windows is disproportionate when the only symptom is one default-app or folder-opening behavior. Microsoft’s broader app installation and removal guidance discusses measures such as restarting, repairing or resetting an app when those options exist, contacting the publisher, and Reset this PC for persistent installation or removal failures. Those steps address wider or persistent problems; they are not a guaranteed folder-association reset.

Costs, downloads, and tools you do not need

Returning to the built-in Explorer experience normally requires no purchase. The relevant Windows Settings page is already part of the operating system, and the direct-launch tests use Start, the taskbar, or the keyboard shortcut. A paid “PC repair” utility, a replacement accessory, or a new file manager is not required to change a supported default.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be cautious with downloadable registry files or utilities that promise to restore every folder association in one click. The supported Windows workflow is to inspect the association that is actually exposed and use the former manager’s instructions for app-specific behavior. Do not treat an advertisement’s claim of a universal reset as evidence that it matches your Windows version or the manager you removed.

Optional shortcut to the Default apps page

Windows documents ms-settings:defaultapps as a shortcut that opens the Default Apps settings page. You can paste that URI into the Run dialog or another Windows location that accepts Settings links, but ordinary readers usually find Settings > Apps > Default apps clearer.

App-specific query parameters depend on Windows version and on how the app registered. Microsoft documents those parameters for Windows 11 version 21H2 with the April 2023 cumulative update, version 22H2 with that update, and version 23H2 or later. A deep link intended for a named application may therefore fail to open the expected view on another build or with an app that registered differently. This version-specific detail is mainly relevant to IT or app-support instructions, not necessary for the ordinary settings workflow.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations

The central route—Settings > Apps > Default apps—is the supported starting point on current Windows versions, but the wording and layout can differ. Follow the labels shown on your device rather than expecting a particular button position from an older guide. Microsoft’s older Default Programs documentation describes registration and association concepts, but examples from legacy Windows should not be treated as proof that the same control exists in a current Windows 11 build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 11’s Home view is another potential source of confusion. File Explorer opening to Home does not mean a third-party manager has regained control. Home replaced the Quick access name in version 22H2; it describes Explorer’s starting view, not a separate file manager.

What the fix can—and cannot—do

File Explorer is a built-in Windows feature, and installing a third-party file manager does not necessarily remove it. For example, reporting about the Files app describes it becoming the default while File Explorer remains available; that example should not be generalized to every manager. The direct launch test is the practical way to check your own PC.

The supported Default apps page is the right starting point when Windows exposes the affected file or link association. When the failed action is specifically opening a folder and no matching control appears, there is no single documented setting that restores it across all managers and Windows builds. In that case, the exact replacement app and the way the failure occurs determine the next step; broad system recovery should wait until there is evidence of a broader Windows or installation problem.

Success should mean more than seeing Explorer open once. Repeat the original action that exposed the problem, test a second folder, and verify that unrelated file and link types still use their intended applications. If only the original route remains broken, preserve the exact error and the app/version details when contacting the former publisher or Microsoft support. Those details are more useful than a general statement that “folders do not open.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make folders open in File Explorer again after uninstalling a file manager?

First confirm that File Explorer opens with Windows logo key + E, Start, or its taskbar icon. Then inspect Settings > Apps > Default apps for a matching supported association. If no folder-specific entry is shown, use the uninstalled manager’s instructions for restoring its folder-opening behavior; Windows does not provide one universal reset for every manager and build.

Does uninstalling a third-party file manager remove File Explorer?

No. File Explorer is built into Windows, and a third-party manager can become the default without removing Explorer. Test Explorer directly to determine whether the built-in app is still available.

Why does Win+E work while double-clicking a folder fails?

Those actions can use different handlers. A working Win+E launch shows that Explorer can start, while the double-click route may retain a folder-opening behavior or shortcut tied to the removed manager.

Can I fix this by selecting File Explorer once in Default apps?

Only for the specific file or link association Windows exposes and you select. One app-level choice does not necessarily reset every document type, protocol, shortcut, or folder-opening behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change a .folder or another guessed extension?

No. Microsoft’s current consumer guidance does not establish one guaranteed extension for every folder-opening scenario. Change only a matching association that Windows actually displays, and avoid guessed types.

Is ms-settings:defaultapps required?

No. It is an optional shortcut to the Default Apps page. Navigating through Settings > Apps > Default apps is usually clearer, especially because app-specific deep links depend on Windows version and app registration.

Should I edit the registry or import a .reg file?

Not as a routine first step. Registry edits and downloaded files are not established as the supported consumer repair for this situation. Use Default apps and app-specific support guidance first.

When should I consider Reset this PC?

Only when there are persistent, broader installation or removal failures or other evidence of a system-wide problem. Resetting Windows is not a proportionate first response to one folder-opening default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy repair software or another file manager?

No. The supported settings change and Explorer launch tests use Windows features already on the PC. A purchase is not required to restore a supported association.

The Bottom Line

Open Explorer directly first. If it works, use Settings > Apps > Default apps for any matching file or link association, then follow the removed manager’s guidance for folder-specific behavior that Windows does not expose. Do not guess at extensions, edit the registry, or reset Windows for a narrow default problem; escalate only when the failure is broader or persists beyond the supported checks.
