To recover a deleted photo for free, restore it from the bin where it was deleted: Windows Recycle Bin for a local file, OneDrive Recycle bin for a cloud file, Google Photos Trash, or iCloud Photos Recently Deleted. Open the relevant bin, select the photo, and choose its restore option before the service’s retention period expires. If the bin was emptied or its retention period ended, recovery depends on whether another account, device, or backup contains a separate copy.
First identify where the photo was deleted
“Recycle Bin” can mean different places. A photo stored on a Windows computer may go to the Windows Recycle Bin; a file deleted from OneDrive may be in OneDrive’s cloud Recycle bin; photos deleted in Google Photos go to its Trash; and iCloud Photos has a Recently Deleted area. A phone or computer that syncs with a cloud library is not necessarily an independent backup: deleting an item in one place can remove it from synced devices too.
- Deleted a file from a Windows folder: check Windows Recycle Bin.
- Deleted a file stored in OneDrive: check OneDrive’s online Recycle bin, and also check the computer’s Recycle Bin or Mac Trash if you deleted it through a synced folder.
- Deleted it in Google Photos: check Google Photos Trash.
- Used iCloud Photos: check Recently Deleted in the iCloud Photos service.
If you are unsure, check each account and library you actually used. Use the same account that held the photo before deletion.
Restore a photo from Windows Recycle Bin
- Open Recycle Bin on the Windows computer where the photo was deleted.
- Find and select the photo or photos. You can select multiple files if needed.
- Right-click a selected item and choose Restore.
Windows returns restored items to their original locations. If you cannot find the file, it may have been deleted from a location or in a way that bypassed the local Recycle Bin, or the bin may already have been emptied. For OneDrive files, also check the cloud bin: online-only files do not appear in the computer’s local Recycle Bin. Microsoft’s OneDrive restore guidance explains the distinction.

Restore a photo from OneDrive
- Sign in to OneDrive on the web using the account that contained the photo.
- Open Recycle bin.
- Select the photo or files, then choose Restore.
Microsoft’s mobile guidance says deleted OneDrive files stay in the cloud Recycle Bin for 30 days. Retention and restore options can differ for work or school accounts, including because of administrator policies. If you deleted a file through the OneDrive folder on a computer, check that computer’s Recycle Bin or Mac Trash as well; online-only files are not stored in the local bin. Microsoft’s OneDrive instructions cover restoring files from the cloud bin.
If a file was permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, Microsoft says OneDrive’s restore feature cannot recover it. Microsoft 365’s “Restore your OneDrive” option is for eligible subscribers and does not recover a file permanently deleted from the Recycle Bin; it is not a free universal recovery method. See Microsoft’s recovery limitations.

Google’s reviewed desktop help guidance says items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, and permanently deleted items cannot be restored through Google Photos. If the photo is missing from the main library, check Archive and confirm the backup settings for the account and device. Google Photos Help explains how to find and restore photos.
Google says deleting an item in Google Photos can also remove it from Android or iOS devices where the app is installed and backup is turned on. Do not assume a synced phone has a separate copy. Google says this deletion does not automatically remove items from services such as Drive, Gmail, or YouTube, so check another service only if you had separately stored the photo there. Google describes what happens when you delete photos and videos.

Check whether another copy existed before the deletion. A backup only helps if it contains the photo from before it was deleted.

- Check another device or an external backup that may contain a separately saved copy.
- For Google Photos, check Archive and the account’s backup settings.
- Confirm you are looking in the service and account where the photo was originally stored.
If no bin or separate copy contains the photo, the official restore paths described here do not provide a way to recover it after permanent deletion. Avoid treating a recovery app’s success as guaranteed; the available official guidance does not establish a free utility that reliably restores permanently deleted photos.
