Start in the messaging app where the conversation was deleted: Samsung Messages has a Trash folder, while Google Messages lets you recover archived conversations but treats deleted ones as permanent. If the message is no longer in Trash or Archive, recovery depends on a Samsung Cloud, Google account, or Smart Switch backup made before it was deleted.
First identify the app and what happened to the conversation
Samsung Messages and Google Messages handle missing conversations differently. Check which app you used before trying a backup restore: restoring a backup can replace or affect data currently on the phone.
- Samsung Messages: Check Trash first. Samsung’s US support guidance says deleted messages can be restored there within 30 days, if Trash was enabled.
- Google Messages: Check Archived. Samsung’s recovery guidance says conversations deleted in Google Messages are permanently deleted in the app; archiving is a separate, reversible action.
Restore a message from Samsung Messages Trash
Samsung’s US support page, accessed October 7, 2026, states that messages can be recovered from Trash within 30 days. This is Samsung’s stated retention window for Samsung Messages, not a guarantee that every deleted message will still be present.

- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then tap Trash.
- Touch and hold the message you want to recover.
- Tap Restore.
If Trash is missing, the feature may have been disabled in Samsung Messages settings, or the app/version may present different options. Samsung says Trash can be disabled; if it was off when the message was deleted, this recovery route may not be available.

Unarchive a conversation in Google Messages
An archived conversation is hidden from the main list, not deleted. Samsung’s recovery guide says deleted texts in Google Messages are permanently deleted through that app, so do not treat Archive as a deleted-message folder.
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile icon, then tap Archived.
- Touch and hold the conversation.
- Tap the Unarchive icon to return it to the conversation list.
Restore messages from a backup
If the conversation is absent from Trash and Archive, look for a backup made before deletion. A backup only helps if it includes the messages; none of the restore routes can establish in advance that a particular conversation is present in your backup.

Samsung Cloud
- On the Galaxy, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Restore data.
- Select the relevant backed-up device.
- Choose Messages, tap Restore, and follow the prompts.
Samsung Cloud restores backed-up messages rather than retrieving messages that were never included. Availability varies by country and carrier, and Samsung notes that some large files may not be backed up. See Samsung’s Samsung Cloud backup and restore guidance.

Samsung’s US recovery guide describes restoring Google-backed data while setting up a new phone or after a factory reset; it does not describe browsing a Google Drive backup as a message archive. Samsung says the receiving phone must run the same Android version or a newer one than the version associated with the backup. A factory reset can erase current local data, so do not use it casually: first understand the reset’s effect and back up current data you need to keep. Follow Samsung’s Google backup restore guidance and the on-screen setup prompts.

Smart Switch from a phone or existing backup
Smart Switch can transfer data from an old phone or restore a prior backup from a PC/Mac or external storage. Use the Smart Switch prompts, choose Messages where available, grant any requested permissions, and complete the transfer to the receiving Galaxy. Device and operating-system compatibility can restrict transfers, and third-party messenger data may not transfer. Samsung says backup contents cannot be read as messages on a computer; messages become readable after transfer to a phone. For an existing external-storage backup, Samsung documents restoring from an SD card, USB flash drive, or SSD. USB storage connects to the phone’s charging port; an OTG adapter may be needed. Some Galaxy phones lack an SD card slot and may require a compatible cable and SD card adapter. Samsung’s external-storage Smart Switch instructions explain the connection options. Buying storage or an adapter now will not recreate messages that were never backed up.

Choose the least disruptive recovery route

Start with Trash or Archive because these checks do not require resetting the phone. Before restoring a backup, check its date and consider what current data could be affected; eligibility and menu labels can vary by region, carrier, device, operating system, and app version. Follow the current prompts on your Galaxy.
