To restore the built-in iPhone app arrangement, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout, then tap Reset Home Screen. This returns Apple’s built-in apps to their original Home Screen positions, removes folders you created, and places downloaded apps alphabetically after the built-in apps. It does not erase your photos, messages, accounts, apps, or other iPhone content.
What the Home Screen reset actually changes
Reset Home Screen Layout is a focused arrangement command. Apple describes it as returning built-in apps to their original Home Screen layout. It changes where icons appear, rather than resetting the iPhone itself.
- Built-in Apple apps return to the arrangement supplied by iOS.
- Folders that you created are removed.
- Apps downloaded from the App Store are arranged alphabetically after the built-in apps.
- Widgets and pages may need to be arranged again if their positions were part of your customized layout.
- Your app data and personal content remain on the iPhone.
The command is different from Erase All Content and Settings. Erase All Content and Settings deletes the iPhone’s content and is intended for a full wipe, such as when selling or giving away the device. Do not select it when your goal is only to restore icon positions.

Confirm that placement—not appearance—is the problem
Use the layout reset when you want the original arrangement or need to undo extensive folder and page changes. If your icons are in the right places but look different, use the Home Screen customization controls instead. If only one or two apps are misplaced, moving them manually is less disruptive.

Record a layout you may want to rebuild
The reset removes folders you made and changes the order of downloaded apps. If you rely on a carefully organized work, travel, or family folder, take screenshots or write down its contents first. The reset does not provide a built-in undo command for your previous arrangement.
Check the iOS wording
The menu path in current iOS documentation is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. Older iOS releases may use slightly different wording or place reset commands in a different location. If you cannot find the option, use the Settings search field and search for Reset Home Screen Layout, then verify that the result is the layout command rather than a full-device erase.
How to restore the default iPhone Home Screen layout
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset. This opens a list of targeted reset commands; it does not immediately erase the phone.
- Choose Reset Home Screen Layout.
- Read the confirmation sheet and tap Reset Home Screen.
After confirmation, iOS rebuilds the Home Screen arrangement. The process normally returns you to the Home Screen without requiring a factory reset. If the change is not immediately visible, swipe through all Home Screen pages, wait a moment for icons to finish loading, and restart the iPhone once.

What you will see after the reset
Built-in apps
Apps that came with iOS are placed in Apple’s original arrangement. The exact set of built-in apps can differ by iPhone model, region, iOS version, and whether an app has been removed or restored, so the first page may not look identical on every device.

Downloaded apps
Apps you obtained from the App Store are placed alphabetically after the built-in apps. Alphabetization uses the app names shown by iOS, so abbreviations, punctuation, and localized names can affect the visible order.
Folders
Folders you created are removed as containers. The apps inside them are not deleted; they are placed into the post-built-in-app sequence and can be organized into new folders afterward.
Widgets and extra pages
The reset is intended to restore app placement, not preserve a custom dashboard. Check each Home Screen page and the Today View after the operation. Re-add or reposition widgets that are no longer where you want them, and remove empty pages if your preferred setup no longer needs them.

Restore the layout without changing icon appearance
The layout reset changes placement. It does not control whether icons appear light, dark, clear, tinted, or in a particular size. On iOS 26, those are separate Home Screen customization choices. You can therefore restore the standard arrangement first and adjust appearance afterward, or change appearance without moving any apps.

Open the iOS 26 customization panel
- Go to any Home Screen page.
- Touch and hold an empty area of the background until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Customize.
Change the available appearance controls
Apple’s iOS 26 controls include changing icon size and choosing dark, clear, or tinted appearances. Select the option you want, then tap outside the panel or use the on-screen dismissal control to finish. These choices affect visual presentation; they do not return apps to Apple’s original positions and do not remove folders.
If you do not see Customize, your iPhone may be running an earlier iOS version, the device may not support the documented iOS 26 controls, or the current menu wording may differ. Update only after checking compatibility and available storage, and do not treat an appearance control as a substitute for Reset Home Screen Layout.
Move individual apps and widgets instead
Manual movement is the better choice when your layout is mostly correct and only a few items need attention.

- Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until icons begin to jiggle.
- Touch and hold the app or widget you want to move.
- Drag it to another position on the current page, to the edge of the screen to move to another page, or into an existing folder.
- Release it in the desired location.
- Tap Done (or tap the Home Screen background) to stop editing.
When dragging between pages, keep the item at the screen edge until the next page appears, then place it in an open position. A widget occupies a defined grid area, so nearby icons may shift to make room. To move an app out of a folder, open the folder while the icons jiggle and drag the app onto the page; to create a new folder, drag one app onto another and let iOS group them.

Troubleshoot a missing or ineffective reset option
The command is not where expected
Open Settings and use its search field for Reset Home Screen Layout. Confirm that the result leads to the targeted Home Screen command. The location can vary by iOS release, and managed devices may hide or restrict some settings.
You selected the wrong reset command
Return to the reset list and choose Reset Home Screen Layout specifically. Other choices in the same list can reset network settings, keyboard settings, privacy settings, or other preferences. Erase All Content and Settings is not interchangeable with any of those targeted commands.
The Home Screen still looks unchanged
Make sure the confirmation button was tapped. Then leave Settings, swipe across every Home Screen page, and check the App Library. If icons appear to be loading, wait briefly and restart the iPhone. A reset cannot restore an app that has been uninstalled; reinstall a missing app from the App Store before arranging it.
An app seems to have disappeared
Swipe left past the last Home Screen page to open the App Library and search for the app. The layout reset changes placement, while the App Library remains the system-wide inventory of installed apps. If the app is not in the App Library, check the App Store purchase history or whether Screen Time, a work profile, or a regional restriction is hiding it.

Folders are gone and you need them back
The removal of user-created folders is an expected result. Recreate each folder by dragging one app onto another, then add the remaining apps manually. Use clear, distinct names and leave frequently used apps on a page rather than rebuilding every folder if a simpler layout is sufficient.
Widgets are not in the preferred places
Enter Home Screen editing mode, then drag each widget to the desired page and grid position. If a widget is no longer available, touch and hold an empty area, tap the add-widget control, select the app, choose a widget size, and add it again. Availability depends on the app and iOS version.
Safety, privacy, and data considerations
A Home Screen layout reset is not a data-erasure operation. It does not sign you out of iCloud, remove photos or messages, uninstall downloaded apps, or delete app documents. Nevertheless, the arrangement itself is not preserved as a reversible snapshot. Save screenshots or notes if recreating the old organization would be difficult.

If you are preparing an iPhone for another person, do not rely on the Home Screen reset to protect personal information. Use the separate erase process, confirm that you have a current backup, and follow Apple’s transfer and sign-out requirements. The layout command is appropriate for organization; it is not a privacy wipe.
Practical recovery plan after resetting
- Swipe through the restored pages and identify the apps you use most often.
- Place high-priority apps in reachable positions using the manual drag method.
- Create only the folders that solve a real grouping problem; every folder you recreate adds another navigation step.
- Add essential widgets and verify that their information is current.
- Use the App Library for rarely used apps instead of filling every Home Screen page.
- If you are on iOS 26, open Edit > Customize and set icon size or appearance after placement is complete.
This sequence separates structural changes from visual ones, making it easier to identify whether a problem is app placement, widget placement, or icon styling.
Key distinction to remember
Reset Home Screen Layout restores Apple’s built-in arrangement and reorganizes downloaded apps; it does not erase the iPhone. Customize on iOS 26 changes how icons look; it does not rearrange them. Manual dragging changes selected apps or widgets without dismantling the rest of your setup. Choose the narrowest control that matches the problem you are trying to solve.
