If an Android app is archived, tap its faded icon on the home screen or in the app list. Android downloads the app again while keeping the archived app data. You can also open the app’s App info page in Settings or its details page in the installed app store and choose the available restore or unarchive option.
The result depends on what actually happened to the app. Archiving, uninstalling, disabling, and clearing storage are different operations. The sections below identify the state first, then give the safest recovery path without deleting any remaining local data.
First determine what happened to the app
A missing app does not always mean its data is gone. Android uses several different states, and each has a different recovery outlook.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| What you see | Likely state | Best first action | Data outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| A dimmed or faded icon remains, often with a download symbol | Archived | Tap the icon to reinstall the app | Android is designed to retain the app’s data during archiving |
| No icon is present, but the app appears under Play Store’s “Not installed” list | Uninstalled or deleted | Reinstall it from the store while signed in to the correct Google Account | Local data may or may not return; cloud sync or backup is required for a dependable recovery |
| The icon is present, but the app is disabled | Disabled | Open App info and select Enable | Disabling normally does not equal clearing the app’s storage |
| The app opens like a first-time install, or its settings and saves have disappeared | App storage was cleared, or the app’s data was deleted | Check the app’s account, sync, export, or restore feature before doing anything else | Android cannot recreate data that was cleared unless a compatible backup or app-managed copy exists |
Google describes archiving this way: “When an app is archived, your device removes its software, permissions, temporary files, and stops notifications, but retains the app icon and data.” That retained icon is the most useful clue. If the icon has vanished entirely, use the deleted-app procedure instead of assuming the archive workflow will work.

Restore an archived app from its faded icon
This is the least destructive recovery method because it reinstalls the missing software without asking you to remove the retained archived data.
- Find the faded icon. Check the home screen, the complete app list, and any folder where the app was previously placed. Archived icons usually look dimmer than installed apps.
- Tap the icon once. Android should begin downloading and reinstalling the app. Leave the icon in place while the process runs.
- Keep the phone online. Use a reliable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection and avoid switching accounts during the download.
- Make enough storage available. If there is insufficient free space, Android will prompt you to manage storage before it can reinstall the app. Remove only files or apps you have verified are safe to delete; do not clear the target app’s storage.
- Wait for installation to finish. The icon should return to its normal appearance. Open it and check whether the expected account, settings, and local content are present.
Do not use Clear storage or uninstall the app while trying to recover an archive. Clearing storage is a separate operation that deletes app data; it is not a more complete form of unarchiving.
Use App info when tapping the icon does nothing
Android and manufacturer interfaces use slightly different labels, but the route is generally:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps, Applications, or a similarly named menu.
- Select the affected app.
- On its App info page, look for an Unarchive, Restore, or install-related control.
Another route is to open the app’s details page in the installed app store and use the available install or unarchive control there. The store must be installed on the phone, and the app must still have a listing that the store can fetch. If the app’s listing was withdrawn, the normal archive restore cannot download its software.
Android-version and device limitations
Google notes that some archive operations require Android 15 or later and that certain functions need supporting device hardware. Settings labels also vary by manufacturer and Android release. If you cannot find an “Archive” command, search Settings for the app by name, open App info, and then check the installed app store for the app’s details page. The absence of a visible Archive button does not by itself prove that the app was deleted.

If the app has no faded icon: reinstall a deleted app
A deleted app must be downloaded again. Reinstalling restores the program, but it does not guarantee that every local file, game save, setting, or login will return.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & device, then open Manage.
- Change the filter from installed apps to Not installed.
- Select the missing app and tap Install. If it is a built-in or previously disabled app, the available control may say Enable instead.
- After installation, open the app and sign in to the account that previously held your data.
For a paid app or paid in-app content, Play Store must be signed in to the same Google Account used for the purchase. Google says compatible app and content purchases can be used again on another Android device with that account without paying a second time. A different account can make a purchased app appear unavailable even when the app itself is still listed.

Check that you are viewing the correct Google Account, then search the store directly by the app’s exact name. A developer may have unpublished the listing, limited it to particular Android versions or regions, or replaced it with a different package. If the store cannot offer the app for your device, contact the app developer or the device manufacturer for an official compatibility or account-recovery route.
Do not treat an unverified APK website as a data-recovery solution. An APK may be modified, incompatible with your device, or unrelated to the package that created your original data. It can also introduce security and account risks while leaving the underlying data problem unresolved.
If the app reinstalls but your data is missing
Separate the software problem from the data problem. A successful installation only proves that the app’s current package was downloaded; it does not prove that the old data was backed up or that the app knows where to find it.

1. Verify the app and account
- Confirm that the package is the same app, not a similarly named replacement or a regional edition.
- Sign in with the account previously used by the app. Many apps keep saves, notes, subscriptions, or settings on their own server rather than in Android’s device storage.
- Look inside the app for Sync, Cloud save, Restore, Import, or Export. Follow the app developer’s instructions for that feature.
Do not create a new profile or overwrite an empty cloud account until you have checked whether the original account is available. App-specific recovery rules are controlled by the developer, not by the Play Store installation process.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Check Android backup status
On many phones, the relevant path is Settings > Google > Backup. The exact wording and location can differ by Android release and manufacturer. Review the most recent backup account and date, but do not interpret a visible backup as proof that this particular app’s files are recoverable.
Google states that an Android device backup can include apps and app data, while also warning: “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” Apps can opt out, exclude particular files, use their own servers, or require a restore only during supported device setup. A backup may therefore restore some settings but not a game save, downloaded media, local database, or login token.
3. Allow time for a recent backup to finish
Google’s Android help says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to complete. That is a possible backup-completion window, not a typical app-restoration time and not a promise that the target app’s data will be included. If the data loss happened before the last successful backup, a newly triggered backup cannot recreate the earlier files.

Android’s Auto Backup is useful context, but it is not a universal undelete tool.

- It applies to eligible apps targeting and running on Android 6.0 (API level 23) or later.
- An app can customize its backup rules or disable backup entirely.
- The allocation is 25 MB per app user. This is a developer-side Auto Backup limit, not a promise that a user has 25 MB of recoverable data.
- Cache directories and no-backup directories are excluded by default.
- Restoration depends on a supported backup dataset and the install or device-setup conditions under which that dataset is restored.
These rules explain why two apps can behave differently after the same reinstall. One may repopulate its settings from a cloud account, another may restore a small preferences file, and a third may start empty because it opted out or stored its important data outside Auto Backup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot the restore by symptom
The faded icon is visible, but tapping it does not start a download
- Open the installed app store and search for the app. The store must be present and able to reach the app’s current listing.
- Check the connection and available storage.
- Open Settings > Apps > the app and inspect App info for an unarchive or install control.
- Restart the phone and try the icon again if the store is temporarily unavailable.
If the listing has been removed or the device is no longer compatible, the standard archive route may not be possible. Contact the developer or device manufacturer rather than deleting the retained app entry.
The app is listed, but Install is unavailable
Confirm that the phone is online, that the Play Store is updated enough to load the listing, and that sufficient storage is free. For paid software, switch to the Google Account that made the purchase. If the store identifies the app as incompatible, the developer or manufacturer must clarify whether an official supported version exists.
The app opens, but asks you to sign in again
Archiving removes the app’s software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications. It can therefore require permissions or authentication again even when retained app data is available. Grant only the permissions the app needs, then use the original account. If the service uses server-side data, a successful sign-in may be what repopulates the content.
The app opens with an empty profile or new save
Stop before creating new content that could overwrite a cloud profile. Check the account, the app’s own restore or import controls, and the Android backup account. If no compatible backup or cloud copy exists, reinstalling cannot reconstruct data that was stored only in deleted local files.

You accidentally cleared storage
Clearing storage is different from clearing cache and removes the app’s local data. Reinstalling the app will only recover that information if the app’s server, an Android backup, or an exported file contains a copy. Check those sources promptly and avoid repeatedly resetting the app while investigating.
A practical decision checklist
- Icon still faded? Tap it, then use App info or the app store details page if necessary.
- No icon? Look in Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & device > Manage > Not installed.
- Purchase missing? Sign in to the Google Account that bought the app or content.
- App reinstalls without data? Verify the app account, cloud sync, export/import options, and Android backup status.
- Store listing unavailable? Contact the developer or device manufacturer; do not use an unverified APK source.
- Was storage cleared? Treat local recovery as uncertain and look for an app-managed or backed-up copy.
Prevent the next app-data loss
- Keep the phone’s Google backup enabled and periodically check the account and most recent backup date.
- Use an app’s own sync or cloud-save feature when it offers one.
- Export important notes, documents, projects, or game saves when the app supports export.
- Keep enough free storage for reinstalls and backup jobs.
- Before clearing storage or uninstalling an app, confirm where its data is stored and how the developer says to restore it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore an archived app without Wi-Fi?
The phone needs an internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data to download the removed app software. A connection alone does not help if the app listing is no longer available.
Does archiving remove my login and permissions?
Archiving removes the app software, permissions, temporary files, and notifications while retaining the icon and app data. The app may therefore request permissions or a sign-in again after it is restored.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is 25 MB the amount of data I can always recover?
No. The 25 MB figure is the Android Auto Backup allocation per app user for eligible apps. Apps can customize or disable backup, and cache and no-backup directories are excluded by default.
Why does a backup appear successful but restore nothing from one app?
Android backup does not guarantee that every app backs up or restores every setting and file. The app may opt out, exclude data, require its own cloud account, or support restoration only during particular setup conditions.
Should I uninstall an app again if the first reinstall is empty?
No. Repeated uninstalling can remove remaining local data. First check the correct account, the app’s sync or restore tools, Android backup status, and any exported copy.
