Short answer: there is no documented software command that rebuilds or re-enables an AirTag speaker after it has been physically disabled. If the modification is reversible and the original speaker, contacts, cover, and clips are undamaged, carefully returning those parts to their original positions may restore sound. If the speaker was cut, removed, crushed, or the enclosure was drilled, replacing the AirTag or asking Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider about service is the dependable path.
What “disabled” means on an AirTag
An AirTag can continue to report its location over Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband even when its sound hardware no longer works. A successful location update therefore does not prove that the speaker is intact.
The AirTag does not contain a simple plug-in buzzer. iFixit describes a built-in voice-coil speaker whose operation depends on the AirTag’s plastic body acting as the diaphragm. The coil, electrical contacts, enclosure and cover must all be in the correct relationship for the tracker to make sound. A displaced cover, broken contact, damaged coil, incorrectly seated part or physical removal can leave tracking operational while silencing the alert.
Recommended Free Tools
- The tracker is about 1.26 inches (31.9 mm) in diameter.
- Apple’s ordinary-use battery life is approximately one year, as reported in iFixit’s device reference.
- The speaker is part of the AirTag’s mechanical and electrical design rather than a user-swappable module.
That construction is why a setting change cannot repair a cut coil, missing diaphragm or bent contact.

First determine whether the problem is software or hardware
Run the normal Find My sound test
- Open Find My on the paired iPhone or iPad.
- Tap Items, select the AirTag, and choose Play Sound.
- Keep the AirTag nearby while the command runs and listen for the alert.
If the command succeeds and the AirTag sounds, there is no speaker-restoration problem to solve. If the command fails, first confirm that the battery is seated correctly and that the AirTag is connected to the account. If location updates work but repeated sound commands produce no sound, treat the issue as probable hardware damage, especially if the tracker was opened, drilled or modified.
There is no documented mute switch or re-enable command
The available technical descriptions do not identify a supported Find My setting that permanently mutes an AirTag or a software command that re-enables a physically disabled speaker. Resetting, re-pairing or updating a phone cannot reconstruct missing hardware. You can still perform ordinary connection and battery checks, but do not expect software troubleshooting to restore a speaker that was altered inside the tracker.
How the AirTag speaker produces sound
Understanding the mechanism prevents a common mistake: looking for a separate buzzer that can simply be plugged back in. The AirTag uses a voice-coil speaker. Its coil responds to the audio signal, while the tracker’s plastic body functions as the sound-producing diaphragm. The cover and internal contact arrangement are therefore part of the acoustic system.

Several kinds of modification can silence it:
- Speaker removal: the coil and associated structure are no longer present.
- Cut or crushed speaker: electrical continuity or mechanical movement may be lost.
- Displaced cover or clips: the diaphragm may not move as designed.
- Broken or bent contacts: the speaker may no longer receive a reliable electrical connection.
- Drilled or damaged enclosure: the acoustic path and the tracker’s sealing can both be compromised.
A tracker can remain visible in Find My because its radio and battery circuits are still working. Sound is a separate function with separate physical failure modes.
Restoration decision table
| What happened | Most realistic action | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Only a Find My or software setting was suspected | Run Play Sound, verify the battery and connection, and test again | No documented software mute or re-enable command has been identified |
| Speaker or cover was moved but all original parts appear intact | With the battery removed, carefully return the original parts, contacts and clips to their previous positions | Sound may return, but opening the tracker carries damage and sealing risks |
| Speaker was cut, removed, crushed or its contacts are broken | Use Apple support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or replace the AirTag | There is no cited Apple speaker-replacement procedure for consumers |
| Enclosure was drilled or heavily altered | Replacement is generally the most predictable consumer fix | IP67 protection may already be lost; further repair can make the tracker unusable |
Attempting to reverse an intact modification
Only attempt this route when the original speaker and enclosure parts are still present and you accept that opening the AirTag can permanently damage it. iFixit’s teardown is descriptive, not an Apple service procedure, so it should not be treated as a guarantee or official repair manual.
Before opening the tracker
- Work on a clean, well-lit surface where small clips and contacts cannot disappear.
- Have the original parts available. Do not improvise a replacement diaphragm, wire bridge or metal shim.
- Remove the CR2032 battery before touching internal components.
- Assume that opening the enclosure can compromise its water and dust sealing.
Safe restoration sequence
- Remove the CR2032 battery. Do not handle the internal speaker structure with the battery installed. Battery removal is the first safety step whenever the tracker is opened.
- Document the current arrangement. Before moving anything, take clear photos of the speaker, cover, contacts and clips. These photos are for your own reference and do not replace a service manual.
- Inspect the speaker. Look for a visibly cut, crushed or missing coil, torn material, displaced component or contamination. If the coil or speaker structure is damaged, stop; repositioning cannot recreate it.
- Check the contacts. Contacts should meet their intended surfaces without being forced. Do not bridge contacts with foil, solder, wire or another improvised conductor.
- Return the speaker and cover to their original positions. The voice-coil speaker and plastic body must align as they did before the modification. Do not press hard on the diaphragm, bend the body or force clips into place.
- Close the enclosure without pinching parts. A cover that sits unevenly, leaves a gap or requires excessive pressure indicates that something is misaligned. Reopen and inspect rather than forcing it.
- Reinstall the battery. Once every part is seated and the enclosure is closed, reinstall the CR2032.
- Test nearby. In Find My, select the AirTag and use Play Sound. Test more than once and listen for a normal alert rather than relying only on the phone’s confirmation.
If the AirTag still tracks but remains silent after an intact reassembly, the speaker, contact path or enclosure may be damaged. Repeated opening increases the chance of making the problem worse.

What not to do
- Do not search for a hidden mute command. No documented AirTag setting restores a physically disabled speaker.
- Do not bridge contacts. Improvised conductive material can short or damage the tracker.
- Do not force the cover or clips. The plastic body is part of the speaker system and the enclosure’s fit matters.
- Do not drill additional holes. iFixit reports that a drilled test unit no longer retained IP67 capability and warns that a mistake can turn the tracker into a paperweight.
- Do not assume location proves audio health. Bluetooth or Ultra Wideband operation can continue after speaker failure.
- Do not treat a teardown as an Apple repair procedure. It explains construction but does not establish an approved consumer speaker replacement.
Water and dust protection after opening or drilling
AirTag enclosures are designed with an IP67 water and dust rating. Opening the tracker can disturb the sealing surfaces; drilling removes the enclosure’s original protection. Once the case has been opened or modified, do not rely on its former IP67 rating unless an authorized service provider confirms the condition and serviceability.

When replacement is the better answer
Replacement is the most predictable consumer solution when the speaker has been removed, cut, crushed or lost, or when the enclosure has been drilled. A replacement avoids guessing at the voice-coil geometry, contact pressure and acoustic alignment. It also avoids investing time in a tracker whose sealing may already be compromised.

Answers to common questions
How do I restore an AirTag speaker after removing it?
You cannot restore a speaker that was physically removed with a software command. If the original speaker and all associated parts are still intact, remove the CR2032, return the speaker, contacts, cover and clips to their original positions, close the case without force, reinstall the battery and test Play Sound. If any speaker structure is missing or damaged, use Apple service or replace the AirTag.
Can I re-enable a muted AirTag?
There is no documented AirTag mute setting or software re-enable command in the available technical descriptions. Run the normal Find My sound test and verify the battery, but treat silence after a physical alteration as a hardware problem.
Will an AirTag still work if the speaker was disabled?
It may still report location because Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband tracking can continue independently of the sound hardware. It will not provide the intended audible locating alert until the speaker system is restored or the tracker is replaced.
Practical decision checklist
- Did you test Find My > Items > AirTag > Play Sound more than once?
- Is the CR2032 correctly seated?
- Was the AirTag physically opened, drilled or altered?
- Are the original voice-coil speaker, contacts, cover and clips all present?
- Is any part cut, crushed, bent or missing?
- Are you prepared to lose the original IP67 protection after opening or drilling?
- Would Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider be a safer option for the damage involved?
If the answers show missing or damaged speaker hardware, replacement or professional service is safer than repeated disassembly.
