Most “damaged” websites after playing a browser game are not permanently changed. They are usually covered by a temporary game effect, rendered incorrectly because an extension is still active, or confused with lost game data stored in the browser. Start with the game’s own exit or reset control, reload the page, and disable the game extension temporarily if the problem remains. Do not clear cookies or all site data until you know whether the game stores progress locally.
For Page Rage specifically, the publisher says the damage is a temporary visual overlay on your device: it does not delete the underlying website or send shots to it. The restart arrow or Shift+R clears the effect, while Escape or the power button exits the game. Other games can use different controls.
First identify what “damaged” means
Restoration depends on which layer changed. A browser game can alter what you see without changing the website’s server, leave an extension running after the game closes, or store its own progress in browser storage. These situations look similar but require different remedies.

Page Rage is an important example of the first category. Its publisher’s FAQ describes the effect as a temporary overlay and says the game does not delete the underlying website. That statement applies to Page Rage, not automatically to every browser game or extension.

Use this restoration sequence
- Keep the original tab and browser profile open. Do not immediately clear browsing data, uninstall the browser, or switch profiles. A local save may exist only in the original browser and profile.
- Exit the game normally. Look for an Exit, power, close, or menu control inside the game. If the game has no visible control, check its official help page rather than guessing a keyboard shortcut.
- Run the game’s reset command if the page is visually covered. In Page Rage, click the restart arrow or press Shift+R. Pressing Escape or the power button exits Page Rage; those keys should not be assumed to work in another game.
- Reload the website. A normal reload requests the page again and often removes a temporary canvas or overlay. Confirm that the page’s text, links, forms, and scrolling work before taking more disruptive steps.
- Temporarily disable the game’s browser extension or add-on. Open the browser’s Extensions or Add-ons manager, identify the extension associated with the game, switch it off, and reopen the page. Roblox Support includes disabling browser add-ons among its troubleshooting steps for display, loading, and interaction problems on Roblox’s website. That is product-specific guidance, but it is a useful diagnostic: if the page works with the extension disabled, the extension is part of the problem.
- Try a fresh page context. Open the same site in a private window or another browser without importing extensions. Spil Games recommends reopening the browser, refreshing, or trying another browser for a game-loading problem. Treat this as a test, not proof that the original browser is damaged.
- Use a hard refresh only after considering saved data. A browser’s hard-refresh command requests page resources again and can help when a display is stale. Browser menus and shortcuts vary by version. A hard refresh is different from deleting cookies or local storage, but you should still preserve any game export before clearing broader data.
- Verify the result. Test navigation, scrolling, buttons, forms, and sign-in. Then reopen the game separately and check whether its progress is present. This separates a restored website display from a restored game save.
A quick decision tree
Ask one question at a time rather than applying every browser remedy at once.
- Is the effect visible only while the game is active? Use the game’s reset or exit control. A temporary visual effect needs no cache cleaner or browser reinstall.
- Does the effect remain after exit? Reload, then disable the game extension and reload again. Test a private window or second browser to compare behavior.
- Is the page normal but the game run missing? Stop changing browser data. Return to the original browser, profile, device, and site origin, then look for an export, account, or cloud-save option.
- Did actual account content change? Contact the site or game publisher. A display reset cannot reverse a server-side change.
This order is deliberately conservative: it starts with reversible actions and postpones anything that might remove cookies or local storage.
Page Rage: the documented controls
If the browser game is Page Rage, use the controls documented by its publisher:
- The restart arrow clears the visual damage.
- Shift+R is the keyboard equivalent of the restart action.
- Escape or the power button exits the game.
- The publisher says the effect is temporary, remains on the player’s device, and does not delete the underlying website or send shots to it.
If the page returns to normal after the restart or exit control, no website restoration beyond that action is required. If it does not, continue with the extension and reload checks rather than repeating the game shortcut.
The wording matters. Page Rage’s FAQ is describing its own implementation, not establishing that every browser game is harmless or that every overlay is temporary. For another title, identify the publisher, read its controls, and determine whether the game is a standalone page, an injected extension, or both.
When an extension keeps affecting the page
Some browser games are delivered as extensions or use an extension to draw over ordinary pages. Closing the game window may not stop the extension’s content scripts or permissions. Disable it temporarily, reload the affected page, and test again.

How to isolate the extension
- Open the browser’s Extensions or Add-ons manager.
- Turn off only the extension associated with the game; leave unrelated security or accessibility extensions unchanged for the first test.
- Close and reopen the affected tab.
- Check the page in a private window or a second browser where the extension is not installed.
- If the page works normally, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict. Keep the game extension disabled until its publisher provides a fix.
Record what changed before and after disabling it: whether the page loaded, which controls failed, and whether the overlay returned. This gives the publisher useful information without requiring you to delete data. Check the extension’s permissions and update notes if available, but do not assume an update will preserve a local save or repair a server-side problem.

Protect game progress before clearing data
“Clear cache” and “clear site data” are not interchangeable. Cached files are replaceable copies of web resources. Cookies, local storage, and related site data can contain settings, login state, and game progress. Spil Games warns that clearing cache can lose progress in casual games, while Signals Games documents saves that are separate for each game and browser and are not synchronized to an account or device.
Export first when the game offers it
Signals Games’ save guide, updated September 27, 2026, recommends exporting a JSON backup before importing another run or confirming a restart. Use the game’s own export command and save the file somewhere outside the browser profile, such as a local folder or other storage you control. Do not delete the original save until you have verified that the exported file exists and can be imported according to the game’s instructions.
An export is not automatically universal. Keep the file associated with the exact game and version that created it, and do not edit the JSON unless the publisher documents that process. If importing requires a confirmation step, read it carefully: an import may replace the current run.

- The exact browser family and version.
- The browser profile in which the game was played.
- The site’s origin, including its domain and protocol.
- The device on which the save was created.
- The individual game, even when several games come from the same publisher.
Signals Games says its saves are separate per game and browser, with no account or device sync. Therefore, opening the game in a different browser or profile can appear to erase progress even when the original local data still exists. Check the original context before concluding that the save is gone.
What recovery options are actually available?

Playit-Online says it cannot restore a save held only in browser storage. Arkadium Player Support likewise explains that many of its games use local storage and that support cannot restore lost progress; its article was modified October 8, 2026. These statements set a practical limit: if the sole local copy was deleted and there is no export, account, or cloud backup, there may be no restore button.
Support can still help identify where a game saves data or whether an account feature exists. When contacting support, include the game title, page URL, browser and profile, device, approximate time of loss, whether cookies or site data were cleared, and whether you have an export. Do not send passwords or private account tokens.

Cache, cookies, and local storage: choose the least destructive fix
Reload or hard refresh
Use these for a page that appears stale, incomplete, or visually corrupted after the game closes. They request the page again without intentionally removing the game’s stored progress. A hard refresh may download current scripts and styles again, but exact shortcuts and behavior vary by browser.
Clear a site’s cached files
This can help when a site is serving an outdated resource or a page display remains broken. Rockstar Games’ PC support guidance, last updated June 17, 2024, recommends clearing cache for certain problems involving current information or performance on Rockstar websites. That recommendation is for its stated website context, not a guarantee for every browser game. Prefer a site-specific cache option when your browser provides one.
Clear cookies or site data
Use this only after checking the game’s save and export instructions. Cookies may contain sign-in state, and local storage may contain a game run. Sign out may occur, settings may reset, and locally stored progress may be lost. If you must clear data, note the site address, confirm that an export or account backup exists, and clear only the affected site rather than every website.

Reset the entire browser
Reserve a browser reset or reinstall for a confirmed browser-wide fault after preserving exports and documenting account details. It is excessive for a temporary overlay and can destroy local saves that a less disruptive step would have preserved. A reset also removes unrelated extensions and settings, making it harder to identify the original cause.
Troubleshooting branches
The game is closed, but the overlay remains
- Use the game’s documented reset control.
- Reload the page.
- Disable the game extension and reload again.
- Test the page in a private window or another browser.
If the overlay appears only when the extension is enabled, leave the extension disabled and contact its publisher. If it appears in every browser, document the exact URL and timing and ask the site owner whether the effect is part of the page itself.
The page loads but buttons or scrolling do not work
- Reload the page.
- Disable the game add-on and other recently installed extensions one at a time.
- Try a second browser to distinguish a site problem from a local browser conflict.
- Only after protecting game data, use the browser’s cache-clearing or hard-refresh option.
Test a simple page on the same site as well as the affected page. If only one page fails, the problem may be page-specific. If many unrelated sites fail, investigate browser extensions or browser settings rather than treating it as game damage.
The website is normal, but game progress disappeared
- Return to the original browser profile and device.
- Confirm that you are on the same game and site origin.
- Look for an export/import function, account sign-in, cloud-save option, or official backup instructions.
- Do not clear additional site data while investigating.
- If the local save was deleted, contact the game’s official support channel, but do not assume recovery is possible.
The site’s server-side content or account data changed
A browser overlay cannot by itself prove that the website’s server data changed. Check the website or game account directly, review its official support route, and describe the exact page, account, browser, and time of the incident. Browser cleanup tools cannot restore data that was changed on the server.

- Using a shortcut from another game. Page Rage uses Shift+R, but another title may map that key to a different action.
- Clearing everything first. “Clear browsing data” can include cookies and local storage, not just replaceable cache files.
- Switching profiles during diagnosis. A different profile can have an empty local save even when the original remains intact.
- Assuming support can reconstruct local data. Playit-Online and Arkadium explain that local-only saves may be unrecoverable.
- Installing a cleaner or repair utility. No such tool is required by the documented fixes, and an automated cleaner may remove the very storage you need.
- Confusing a normal page with a restored game. Website rendering and game progress are separate checks.
Prevent the next incident
- Learn the game’s exit and reset controls before using its page effects.
- Export saves whenever the game provides an export function.
- Keep the export outside the browser profile.
- Record which browser, profile, device, and game contain the save.
- Disable a troublesome extension instead of immediately deleting all browser data.
- Read the game’s storage and recovery instructions before clearing cache, cookies, or local storage.
- Use official support pages for product-specific controls; browser menus and extension behavior vary by browser and version.
How to decide whether restoration succeeded
Check the website and the game separately. The website is restored when its normal content renders, links and controls respond, and the problem does not return with the game extension disabled. The game is restored only when its own progress, settings, or imported run is present. A normal website does not prove that a deleted local save can be recovered, and a missing game save does not prove that the website was damaged.
