If your PS5 will not reach the home screen after a failed jailbreak or other modification, start with Sony’s official Safe Mode recovery path. Power the console off, enter Safe Mode, try Repair Console Storage first, and then attempt an official system-software update. Use a USB reinstall only after those non-erasing or less destructive steps fail, because Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all data on the console.

Sony’s documentation explains how to recover a PS5 that will not start, but it does not diagnose a particular jailbreak, identify the exploit or firmware problem involved, or promise that reinstalling will revive the console. The procedure below therefore stays within Sony’s documented recovery options and clearly separates data-preserving steps from destructive ones.

What this guide can—and cannot—establish

A failed jailbreak can leave a PS5 unable to boot, but the available official documentation does not establish why an individual modified console failed. It does not distinguish software corruption from a hardware fault, identify a particular firmware or exploit chain, or confirm that a reinstall will reverse a modification. Treat every outcome as conditional: official recovery may restore startup, or the console may still require repair.

Sony warns that a console altered or modified outside its described procedures might not operate properly or might be unable to install official update data. That is a general warning, not a jailbreak-specific diagnosis and not a guarantee that your console is permanently bricked. This guide does not make claims about warranty treatment, permanent damage, or a specific jailbreak method.

Choose the least destructive recovery step first

Safe Mode provides the controlled starting point when the PS5 cannot reach the normal interface. The options below are ordered from the least destructive practical action to the most consequential. Read the wording shown on the console before confirming any option; several Safe Mode choices can erase data.

Safe Mode action Data effect Purpose
Repair Console Storage Sony describes this option as not erasing data. Attempts to repair storage problems that prevent normal startup.
Update System Software Attempts to update the installed system software. Uses an internet update or an official update file on USB.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Deletes all data on the PS5. Erases the system and installs the reinstallation package from USB.

Restore Default Settings does not delete console storage content according to Sony, but it restores settings. Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, Restart PS5, and Change Video Output are also available in Safe Mode; the screen’s warning determines whether a selected operation can cause data loss. Do not select a reset simply because it appears near the top of the menu.

Prepare before entering Safe Mode

  • Use the PS5’s own power button. If the console is still running, turn it off completely rather than putting it into Rest Mode.
  • Have a data-capable USB cable ready for the controller. A cable that only charges may not let Safe Mode detect the controller.
  • If you will update or reinstall from USB, use a drive that can be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes files already on that drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
  • Download update files only from Sony’s official PlayStation support page. Do not rename a downloaded file casually or combine an ordinary update file with a reinstallation procedure.
  • If the console contains irreplaceable local saves or captures, understand that a reinstall will delete them. A reinstall is not a data-recovery method.

Enter PS5 Safe Mode

  1. Press and hold the PS5 power button until the console shuts down. Wait until the power indicator is fully off.
  2. Press and hold the power button again. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, then release. The first beep sounds when you initially press the button; the second follows several seconds later.
  3. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Press the controller’s PS button when the Safe Mode prompt appears.
  4. Read the list of Safe Mode options on screen before selecting one. Start with Repair Console Storage if it is offered and the console’s symptoms point to a storage-startup problem.

Safe Mode runs only basic functions, so its appearance does not prove that the jailbreak caused the failure or that the hardware is healthy. It simply gives you access to Sony’s recovery tools without loading the normal operating environment.

Work through the Safe Mode options

Restart PS5

Use Restart PS5 only after the console has entered Safe Mode normally and you have not changed anything. It exits Safe Mode and tries a standard boot. If the same failure returns, go back into Safe Mode rather than repeatedly cycling the power.

Change Video Output

If the console appears to power on but the television shows no usable picture, Change Video Output can help with resolution or display-mode problems. It addresses the video signal, not a failed system-software installation. Check the HDMI connection and television input as well; a blank screen is not by itself proof that the PS5 is bricked.

Repair Console Storage

Repair Console Storage is Sony’s documented non-erasing repair option. Select it before a reset when Safe Mode is available. The operation can take time; do not disconnect power while the console is working. Sony describes this option as not deleting data, but no storage repair can guarantee that an unreadable or physically failing drive will recover every file.

Update System Software

Use Update System Software when Safe Mode is stable and the console can obtain an official package. If an internet update fails, use the manual USB procedure in the next section. The update file is not the same thing as the full reinstallation file, and choosing the wrong Safe Mode option can turn an attempted update into a data-erasing reset.

Restore Default Settings

Restore Default Settings returns settings to their defaults. Sony says it does not delete content stored on the console. It can nevertheless require you to configure display, network, and other preferences again. Use it for a settings-related startup problem, not as a substitute for the system-software update or reinstall procedure.

Clear Cache and Rebuild Database

This menu contains maintenance functions that can address cache or database inconsistencies. Read the individual confirmation screen because Safe Mode actions differ in their data effects. Allow the process to finish without removing power. If the console still cannot boot, proceed to the official update path instead of repeating the same maintenance operation indefinitely.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)

This is the destructive option. Sony states: Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console. Do not choose it until you have accepted the loss of local data and tried the less destructive options that apply.

Manual system-software update from USB

Sony’s manual update procedure requires a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive, a precise folder structure, and the ordinary official update file. A basic USB flash drive with enough free space is sufficient; Sony’s current support page lists approximately 1.1 GB for the update file, but file sizes and requirements can change.

  1. Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases the drive.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s PlayStation support page.
  5. Save the file in the UPDATE folder and name it exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  6. Safely eject the drive from the computer, connect it to the PS5, and enter Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
  7. Choose Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device.
  8. Follow the on-screen confirmation and leave the console connected to power until the process finishes and restarts.

The folder and file names must use uppercase letters exactly as shown. If Safe Mode says it cannot find the update file, check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, that the path is PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, and that the filename has not gained an extra extension such as .PUP.PUP. Download the file again from Sony if its integrity is uncertain.

Do not use a reinstallation file for the ordinary update option, and do not obtain update data from unofficial mirrors. Sony specifically warns that data from a different source or method may prevent the console from operating properly or installing official update data—especially on a console that has been altered.

Full USB reinstallation: the last resort

A reinstallation wipes the PS5 and lays down the system software again. It is materially different from an update. Sony’s instructions require the reinstallation file, not the ordinary update file, and the Safe Mode command Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

  • All of jump drives have been rigorously tested and formatted before leaving the factory; The default format of the usb stick is exFAT
  1. Back up anything you can still access. A console that will not boot may offer no practical way to copy local saves, so assume that inaccessible data cannot be rescued by the reinstall itself.
  2. Prepare a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive. Keep the same folder structure: PS5, then UPDATE.
  3. Download Sony’s current PS5 reinstallation file, not the smaller routine update file.
  4. Place it in PS5/UPDATE and name it exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  5. Connect the drive to the console and enter Safe Mode by releasing the power button after the second beep.
  6. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), confirm the data-deletion warning, and follow the prompts.
  7. Leave the PS5 powered and connected while it erases, installs, and restarts. Interrupting the process can create another failed installation.

Sony’s UK instructions list approximately 1.2 GB of free USB space for the reinstallation file. That is an approximate, page-specific requirement and can change, so check the live Sony support page immediately before preparing the drive. The file must be the reinstallation package even though the filename remains PS5UPDATE.PUP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinstallation may restore a damaged official installation, but Sony’s documentation does not promise recovery for a modified console. It also does not establish whether a failed jailbreak changed hardware, storage, or firmware behavior in a way the official installer cannot repair.

If Safe Mode will not appear

A PS5 that never displays Safe Mode needs a different branch of troubleshooting. Sony recommends checking the physical connections before assuming a software brick.

  1. Turn the console off completely and reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends. Select the television input that actually carries the PS5 signal.
  2. Try a different HDMI cable and, if possible, another television or display input.
  3. Try another USB cable for the controller. The controller must be connected by USB before pressing the PS button in Safe Mode.
  4. Try a different power cable if one is available and compatible. Do not use a damaged cable or a loose power strip connection.
  5. Power the PS5 off, disconnect its power cable, wait 20 minutes, reconnect it, and attempt Safe Mode again by holding the power button until the second beep.

If the indicator behaves abnormally, the display remains blank, or Safe Mode still never appears after those checks, the official next step is repair support. Repeatedly forcing power off while the console is writing to storage can worsen corruption, so stop cycling it once the documented checks have been exhausted.

Error-code branch: SU-101337-5

Sony’s guidance for error SU-101337-5 includes a specific power reset: unplug the power cable, wait five minutes, reconnect it, and try again before using the Safe Mode reinstall procedure. That five-minute interval belongs to this cited error-code instruction; it is not a universal rule for every PS5 that failed a jailbreak. If your console shows a different code, follow the instructions for that code rather than borrowing this timing.

What a failed jailbreak changes about the decision

The modification matters because Sony’s update documentation warns that a console altered outside its official procedures might not operate properly or might be unable to install official update data. That warning justifies using only Sony’s files and documented Safe Mode commands. It does not tell you whether the jailbreak left a recoverable software state, whether a particular firmware is supported, or whether the console is permanently damaged.

A successful reinstall would give you a clean official system-software installation, but it would not prove what caused the original failure. Conversely, an installer error does not by itself prove permanent hardware damage. Keep notes of the exact on-screen message, error code, indicator behavior, and the Safe Mode steps you attempted; those details help a repair technician without requiring you to repeat risky experiments.

When to stop troubleshooting and request repair

  • Safe Mode never appears after checking HDMI, USB, and power connections and performing the 20-minute power disconnect.
  • The console cannot recognize a correctly named FAT32 or exFAT USB drive containing the official file.
  • An update or reinstall repeatedly fails at the same point, displays an error code, or leaves the console unable to start.
  • The PS5 shuts down unexpectedly, shows signs of overheating, produces unusual sounds, or will not maintain power.
  • You have reached the reinstall step but cannot accept losing local console data or cannot verify that you have the correct official file.

Use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs and support guidance when these conditions apply. The documented support route is the appropriate escalation; this guide cannot diagnose a board, storage, power, or display fault remotely.

After the PS5 starts again

Complete the initial setup

After an update, confirm that the console reaches the home screen and remains stable through a normal restart. After a reinstall, complete the first-run setup, sign in, reconnect storage devices one at a time, and check whether the original symptom returns. A clean boot does not restore data erased by the reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use only official update paths

Keep future system-software updates within the official PlayStation instructions. Do not reuse modified packages, unofficial update sources, or scripts that the support documentation does not describe. The warning about altered consoles is broad, so treat unsupported modification as an ongoing compatibility risk rather than assuming one successful boot removes it.

Record what worked

Write down whether Repair Console Storage, an online update, a USB update, or a full reinstall solved the startup problem. Include the file type used, the Safe Mode option selected, and any error code. This record makes later support conversations more precise and helps you avoid repeating a destructive step unnecessarily.

Questions that remain unresolved

Does reinstalling officially undo a jailbreak?

Official Sony documentation does not answer that jailbreak-specific question. It documents erasing the console and installing system software; it does not identify how a particular modification behaves or guarantee that every altered console will accept the installer.

Can local saves be recovered after a reinstall?

The reinstall procedure deletes all console data. The official instructions do not promise recovery of local saves afterward. If the console cannot boot and you have no separate backup, treat those files as at risk before confirming the reset.

No. The approximately 1.1 GB update and approximately 1.2 GB reinstallation figures are current page-specific guidance and can change as Sony publishes new system-software files. Check the live support page before formatting the drive.
