Start with Sony’s least-destructive recovery steps, then use an official USB update only if necessary. A full “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” is the last resort because it erases every item stored on the console. Sony’s instructions can restore normal operation after an update failure, but they do not promise that reinstalling official firmware will undo every jailbreak or alternate-operating-system modification. A modified console may still fail to install, boot, or qualify for service.

What restoration can—and cannot—guarantee

A failed jailbreak or alternate OS installation can leave a PS5 unable to boot normally, stuck in an update loop, or entering Safe Mode repeatedly. Sony’s public procedures address system-software updates, Safe Mode recovery, and complete reinstallation. They do not establish that an official reinstall reverses every unofficial modification. Sony warns that software obtained from unofficial sources or installed by methods outside its instructions can cause improper operation or prevent official update data from installing. See Sony’s PS5 system-software guidance.

Use only the official file and the documented menu path. Do not treat a successful reinstall as proof that a console altered with unofficial software has been returned to an unmodified state. If the documented recovery sequence fails, Sony directs users to its support or repair channel; the available guidance does not determine warranty or repair eligibility for a particular modified console.

Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Only after the preceding troubleshooting and update attempts fail Deletes all data on the PS5 A FAT32/exFAT USB drive with Sony’s reinstallation file

Sony describes the reinstall as a last troubleshooting step in its Safe Mode reinstallation instructions. Back up anything you can access before choosing it.

Before entering Safe Mode

Stop experimenting with unofficial files

Disconnect any device or storage containing an unofficial system image, payload, or alternate-OS installer. Do not attempt another jailbreak or combine files from different guides with Sony’s recovery process. Sony specifically says not to download or install an update using data other than the official update file supplied by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Back up accessible data

If the console still reaches the normal dashboard, copy or synchronize saved data and capture any screenshots or video you need. A full reinstall removes data stored on the console, so do not proceed while assuming that accounts, saves, captures, or installed games will remain. If the PS5 cannot boot far enough to perform a backup, proceed with the non-destructive Safe Mode options first; do not repeatedly force resets in the hope of preserving data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare a compatible USB drive

  • Use a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
  • Leave approximately 1.1 GB of free space for Sony’s update file or approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file. These are Sony’s procedural space requirements for the respective downloads, not performance measurements.
  • Use a computer to create the folders PS5 and, inside it, UPDATE. Folder names are case-sensitive in practice, so type them in uppercase exactly as shown.
  • Download the file from Sony’s current support page for the operation you are performing. Never rename a file supplied for one operation into the other operation’s filename.

Keep the drive connected directly to the console while using Safe Mode. If the PS5 does not recognize the file, check the drive format, folder spelling and capitalization, and filename before trying another drive.

Enter PS5 Safe Mode correctly

  1. Turn the console completely off. If it is on, press and hold the power button until the system shuts down.
  2. Press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear the second beep; the second beep occurs several seconds after the first.
  3. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button when Safe Mode appears.
  4. Read the menu labels carefully. “Update System Software” and “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” are separate choices with different consequences.

Sony lists the available Safe Mode functions and their purposes in its Safe Mode guide. If Safe Mode will not appear, shut the console down again and repeat the power-button timing rather than selecting a reset blindly.

Try the non-destructive Safe Mode options first

Repair Console Storage

Choose Repair Console Storage when the problem appears related to the console’s storage structure or when the system cannot proceed through normal startup. This option is separate from a system-software reinstall. Let the process finish and allow the PS5 to restart; do not remove power while it is working.

Restore Default Settings

Choose Restore Default Settings when a corrupted configuration is preventing startup or update recovery. Confirm that you are selecting the settings reset, not “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).” Read every confirmation screen because the similar wording can make the two operations easy to confuse.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear Cache and Rebuild Database

Use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for cache or database problems. The menu presents these as Safe Mode maintenance actions, distinct from reinstalling the operating system. Allow the database process to complete without turning off the console.

Try the ordinary update path when available

If the PS5 can reach its update screen or dashboard, allow it to obtain the official update through the console first. Sony recommends trying applicable update and Safe Mode troubleshooting before treating a complete reinstallation as the first move. A failed download is a reason to use the manual USB update procedure below, not a reason to jump directly to a destructive reset.

Match the symptom to the least destructive action

When the console still reaches a menu, an update failure generally points first to Update System Software, not to the reset command. A console that repeatedly returns to Safe Mode can still be given the maintenance options in the table before any data-erasing choice. Storage or database symptoms support trying the corresponding repair or rebuild option. These labels are not interchangeable: choosing the reinstall entry changes the data outcome even when the screen looks similar.

If you are unsure which symptom applies, record what happens immediately after pressing the power button: whether the dashboard appears, whether Safe Mode appears, whether an update starts, and the exact wording of any error. That record lets you make a deliberate choice and gives Sony support useful information if the documented sequence fails.

Install an official update from USB

Use this route when repeated downloads fail or the console cannot complete its normal update process. It updates the system software without selecting the full reinstall command.

  1. On a computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
  2. Create a top-level folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download Sony’s official update file from the PS5 system-software page.
  5. Save the file inside PS5/UPDATE with the exact filename PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add a second extension such as .PUP.pup.
  6. Safely eject the drive from the computer.
  7. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
  8. Connect the controller by USB and select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device.
  9. Follow the on-screen confirmation and leave the console powered on until the update completes.

Sony’s procedure calls for approximately 1.1 GB of free space for this update file. If the console reports that no file was found, verify that the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP, that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, and that you downloaded the update file rather than the reinstallation file.

The USB drive is only a delivery medium; it does not make an unofficial image acceptable. Download a fresh file from Sony for each attempt rather than recycling a file whose origin or purpose is uncertain. Keep the console connected to power and do not remove the drive while the update is being applied. An interruption can leave the installation incomplete and may damage the console.

Perform a full PS5 system-software reinstallation only as a last resort

A reinstallation replaces the console’s system software and deletes all data on the PS5. Sony’s support page states: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Treat the confirmation as irreversible for practical purposes unless you already have the data backed up elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT and ensure approximately 1.2 GB of free space.
  2. Create the folders PS5 and UPDATE in that order.
  3. Download Sony’s official reinstallation file from the PS5/PS4 Safe Mode reinstallation page.
  4. Place the file in PS5/UPDATE and name it exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  5. Safely eject the USB drive and connect it directly to the PS5.
  6. Enter Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, then connect the controller with a USB cable.
  7. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), not Update System Software.
  8. Read the warning, confirm only when you accept the complete data loss, and wait for the process to finish. Do not turn off the console, unplug it, or remove the USB drive during installation.

Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console. Do not use a system image from another site, an altered filename, or a method outside Sony’s instructions. A successful installation may return the PS5 to the official software path, but Sony does not guarantee that it will undo every effect of a jailbreak or alternate OS installation.

Reinstallation is not a data-recovery tool. It should be chosen because you accept losing the console’s local data and have already tried the applicable maintenance and update procedures, not because it is a quicker version of the USB update. The approximately 1.2 GB figure describes free space needed for Sony’s reinstallation download; it does not describe the console’s total storage or the amount of data that will be erased.

What to do after a successful reinstall

The PS5 will start as a newly initialized console. Complete the on-screen setup, connect it to the internet when prompted, sign in to the appropriate PlayStation account, and install updates through the official system-software process. Restore saved data only from backups you trust. Do not copy an unofficial system image or modification back onto the console while diagnosing whether the official installation solved the boot problem.

If the console boots but shows a recurring update prompt, first confirm that no USB drive containing an old update or reinstallation file is still attached. Then use the ordinary update process or the documented Safe Mode update path, rather than selecting the reinstall command again.

Check the console through a normal restart after setup. If it reaches the dashboard and accepts the official update path, continue using only Sony’s files and documented menus. If the same boot or update failure returns immediately, note whether it happens before or after the update and stop repeating destructive attempts; that pattern is information for support, not evidence that another unofficial installer is needed.

Troubleshoot a USB file that is not recognized

  • Wrong folder level: The required path is PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP at the root of the USB drive, not inside an additional folder created by the computer.
  • Incorrect capitalization: Use uppercase PS5, UPDATE, and PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  • Wrong file type: The update and reinstallation downloads are distinct. Use the file that matches the Safe Mode option you selected.
  • Unsupported formatting: Reformat the drive as FAT32 or exFAT, then recreate the folders and copy a fresh official download.
  • Insufficient free space: Keep about 1.1 GB free for the update file or about 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file, as specified by Sony.
  • Interrupted installation: If power was removed during installation, repeat the official procedure only after checking the drive and file. Do not repeatedly cut power while the console is processing.

Sony’s manual-update instructions specifically tell users to check uppercase folder and file names when the file is not recognized. Follow the current labels and downloads on its support pages because menu wording and download links can change.

Do not infer that a recognized file means the correct file was selected. The update and reinstallation downloads use the same final filename inside the USB folders, so the distinction is made by which official download you obtained and which Safe Mode menu option you choose. Keep only the file needed for the current operation on the drive to reduce the chance of selecting the wrong procedure.

When official recovery does not work

If Repair Console Storage, the other applicable Safe Mode maintenance actions, the official USB update, and—only when justified—the official reinstallation all fail, stop escalating through unofficial methods. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance directs users to PlayStation support and repair. Explain that the console was modified or that an alternate operating system was attempted; do not assume in advance whether service or warranty coverage will be accepted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The published instructions do not provide a guaranteed repair price, turnaround time, or eligibility decision for a modified console. Ask Sony or its authorized repair channel about those practical details for your region instead of relying on a promise from a third-party guide. Keep the console’s serial and purchase information available if support requests them, but do not conceal the modification history.

Record the exact symptom, the Safe Mode option selected, any on-screen error wording, and whether the console can enter Safe Mode. This information helps support identify whether the failure is a storage, update, or hardware issue without requiring you to repeat destructive steps unnecessarily.

Recovery checklist

  • Remove unofficial installers and use only Sony’s current files.
  • Back up accessible data before any reset.
  • Try the relevant Safe Mode maintenance option before a reinstall.
  • Use FAT32 or exFAT and the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP path.
  • Choose Update System Software for an update; reserve Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) for the last resort.
  • Keep the console powered and the USB drive connected until installation finishes.
  • Escalate to Sony support or repair when the documented process fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will reinstalling official PS5 software definitely remove a jailbreak or alternate OS?

No. Sony documents the reinstall as a way to replace system software, but it does not guarantee that every unofficial modification or its effects will be reversed.

Does a PS5 system-software reinstall erase my data?

Yes. Sony states that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the PS5. Back up anything accessible before selecting “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Update System Software and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)?

An update installs official system software without choosing the full reset command. The reset is a destructive reinstall that deletes console data and should be reserved for the last troubleshooting step.

What USB format and folders does Sony require?

Use a FAT32 or exFAT drive with a top-level PS5 folder and an UPDATE folder inside it. Put the applicable official file at PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.

How much free USB space is needed?

Sony’s procedures call for approximately 1.1 GB for the update file and approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file.

Why does Safe Mode say it cannot find my update file?

Check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, the folders are uppercase and at the root, the filename is exactly PS5UPDATE.PUP, and you downloaded the file that matches the selected Safe Mode operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I turn off the PS5 during an update or reinstall?

No. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console. Leave power connected and do not remove the USB drive until the process finishes.

What if the official steps still leave the PS5 unusable?

Stop trying unofficial installers and contact PlayStation support or repair. Sony’s public instructions do not predetermine warranty, service eligibility, cost, or outcome for a modified console.

The Bottom Line

Use Sony’s Safe Mode maintenance tools and official USB update first. If a full reinstall is unavoidable, use the exact FAT32/exFAT folder layout and official reinstallation file, understand that it deletes all PS5 data, and never interrupt the process. Because Sony does not guarantee that reinstalling official software reverses every jailbreak or alternate OS change, contact PlayStation support or repair when the documented recovery path fails.
