If a PS5 became unstable, stopped booting, or failed an update after an attempted jailbreak, stop using unofficial files and identify the screen you can still reach. A console that reaches the home screen can use normal settings; one that reaches Safe Mode should be repaired there with the least-destructive option that matches the symptom; a console that reaches neither requires Sony’s repair path.

Sony documents ordinary system-software recovery, not a jailbreak-specific uninstall. Reinstalling from Sony’s official USB package may restore normal operation, but it is not guaranteed to reverse every modification or preserve data. The full reinstallation option erases the console, so try storage repair, an update, or other non-erasing actions first.

First, identify the PS5’s current state

Your next step depends on what appears when you press the power button. Do not repeatedly try random payloads, modified update files, or firmware from unofficial websites while diagnosing the console.

The PS5 reaches the home screen

Back up saved data and captures if the console is usable. Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and use Sony’s normal update route. If the system is unstable, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, restart once, and then use Safe Mode for a controlled repair rather than attempting another jailbreak method.

A normal boot does not prove that the installation is healthy. Test basic functions without launching any unofficial software: open several settings pages, start a game, check the network connection, and shut down from the menu. If errors recur, record the exact wording or code and the time it appeared. That information is more useful to support than a description such as “it just stopped working.”

The PS5 reaches Safe Mode

Use a wired USB data cable to connect the controller, press the PS button, and select an option that fits the symptom. Safe Mode is Sony’s built-in recovery menu; its choices have different effects on software and user data.

The PS5 reaches neither the home screen nor Safe Mode

Try the Safe Mode startup sequence once more with the console fully powered off. If there is still no Safe Mode menu, or the console immediately shuts down, do not keep experimenting with unofficial installers. Use PlayStation Support and the regional repair diagnostic.

How to enter Safe Mode correctly

  1. Turn the PS5 off completely. If it is frozen, hold the power button until the console shuts down.
  2. Press and hold the power button again. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep, then release.
  3. Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. A wireless connection is not available in Safe Mode.
  4. Press the PS button and wait for the Safe Mode menu.

Sony describes this sequence and the available recovery choices in its Safe Mode instructions. If the controller is not detected, try a different USB data cable and another USB port; a charge-only cable cannot transmit the controller input. Avoid hubs and adapters while troubleshooting, because a direct connection makes it easier to distinguish a cable problem from a console problem.

Safe Mode options: choose the least destructive match

The following comparison uses Sony’s listed options. “No” in the data column means Sony says the option does not erase user data; it does not mean the option can repair every jailbreak-related failure.

Safe Mode option What it does User-data impact USB drive or computer Console must reach Safe Mode?
Repair Console Storage Checks and repairs storage problems without rebuilding the entire system. Sony says it does not erase data. Not stated as required by Sony. Yes.
Update System Software Installs an official system-software update, either online or from USB storage. Designed as an update rather than a reset; back up first because Sony does not promise recovery from a modified or already-damaged installation. USB is needed for the manual method; online updating uses the console’s network connection. Yes for the Safe Mode path.
Restore Default Settings Returns settings to defaults. Sony says content on console storage is preserved. Not stated as required by Sony. Yes.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database Clears temporary data or rebuilds the content database when menus, icons, or loading behavior are corrupted. Sony lists it separately from reset options; it is not the full system-software reinstall. Not stated as required by Sony. Yes.
Reset PS5 Resets the console to its initial state. Erases user data; use only after non-erasing choices fail and you have accepted the loss. Not stated as required by Sony. Yes.
Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) Removes the installed system software and installs it again from Sony’s separate reinstallation package. Deletes all console data. FAT32 or exFAT USB drive and a PC or Mac are required. Yes.

The complete menu list and Sony’s descriptions are available on the official Safe Mode page. Select only the option named in the relevant procedure below; “Update System Software” and “Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software)” are not interchangeable.

How to decide between the non-erasing choices

Use Repair Console Storage when the symptom suggests a storage or boot problem and you want Sony’s explicitly non-erasing option. Use Clear Cache and Rebuild Database when the console reaches menus but icons, content lists, or loading behavior appear inconsistent. Use Restore Default Settings when settings themselves seem damaged and preserving content on console storage is important. None of these choices is a jailbreak detector, and none guarantees that an altered installation will become normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An online update is appropriate when the console can reach the home screen and download an official package. The Safe Mode USB update is useful when the normal updater fails or the system cannot stay stable long enough to complete it. A reset is a data-erasing decision, not simply a stronger update. Read the option name on screen twice before confirming.

Recovery path when the PS5 still starts normally

1. Preserve what you can

If the home screen remains usable, synchronize saved data with your subscription cloud storage if you use that service, copy captures to USB, and record any error code. Do this before selecting a reset or reinstall. A failed jailbreak attempt can leave the operating system unreliable, so treat a successful boot as an opportunity to make a backup rather than proof that the console is fixed.

Back up while the console is cool, connected directly to power, and free of unnecessary accessories. Do not interrupt a copy by removing the drive or forcing a shutdown. If a particular game or application causes crashes, note its name instead of repeatedly opening it; selective restoration later is safer than immediately putting every item back.

2. Remove unofficial software and peripherals

Shut down the console and remove USB devices that were used for payloads, installers, or modified files. Do not launch an unofficial updater to “clean” the system. Sony warns that update data from another source, an outside method, or an altered console can prevent normal operation or installation of official update data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use Sony’s normal update screen

Return to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If an official update is offered, install it through the console. If the update repeatedly fails, move to Safe Mode and use the manual USB procedure rather than repeatedly retrying a damaged download.

Manual PS5 system-software update from a USB drive

This procedure updates the existing installation; it is different from the full reinstallation procedure. Use only the official update file from Sony’s PS5 system-software page.

Prepare the drive on a PC or Mac

  1. Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting erases that drive, so copy any files you need elsewhere first.
  2. At the top level of the drive, create a folder named PS5.
  3. Inside PS5, create a folder named UPDATE.
  4. Download Sony’s official PS5 update file and save it inside the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP.
  5. Check the spelling and capitalization. The complete path must be PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; do not leave the file inside an extra folder created by the browser.

Use a drive intended for data transfer rather than one containing other installers. The important specification is the FAT32 or exFAT file system, not a particular brand, capacity, color, or advertised speed. A USB data cable for the controller is likewise a task-enabling item; neither the drive nor the cable repairs the console by itself.

Install the update in Safe Mode

  1. Safely eject the USB drive from the computer.
  2. Turn the PS5 off and start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
  3. Connect the controller by USB and press the PS button.
  4. Select Update System Software.
  5. Select Update from USB Storage Device and follow the prompts.

If the PS5 says it cannot find the update file, Sony’s troubleshooting advice is to check that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, confirm the PS5 and UPDATE folder names, verify PS5UPDATE.PUP, and use uppercase letters. Re-download the file from Sony if its download was interrupted. Do not rename a jailbreak package to make it appear to be Sony’s file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the path from the drive’s root, not from a shortcut or a folder with a similar name. If the file is detected but installation fails, repeat the download from Sony and, if available, try another correctly formatted drive. Repeatedly changing files, extensions, or folder names beyond Sony’s instructions makes diagnosis harder and can introduce another failure.

Full system-software reinstallation: the last resort

Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only when less-destructive recovery has failed and you accept a complete wipe. Sony’s exact warning is: “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” This includes local user data, installed games, captures, and settings. A cloud backup or previous USB backup is required to restore anything afterward.

Use the separate reinstallation download

Sony supplies a system-software reinstallation file separately from the ordinary update file. The file still belongs at PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP on a FAT32 or exFAT drive, but downloading the wrong package can make the console reject it. Start from Sony’s official system-software instructions and follow the link labeled for reinstallation, not the regular update download.

Run the wipe and reinstall

  1. Prepare the USB drive and file exactly as Sony specifies.
  2. Power off the PS5 and enter Safe Mode using the second-beep procedure.
  3. Connect the controller with USB and press the PS button.
  4. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
  5. Confirm the warnings and leave the console connected to power until the process finishes.
  6. Complete the first-run setup, install official updates if prompted, and restore backed-up saves or captures.

This is an official restoration of PS5 system software, not a guaranteed jailbreak uninstaller. Sony does not publish a jailbreak-specific success rate, data-recovery guarantee, or diagnosis for an individually modified console. If the reinstallation stops, loops, or reports that the file cannot be used, stop trying alternative firmware and proceed to repair support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for the practical consequences before confirming: local accounts, settings, installed games, captures, and other console data must be set up or downloaded again. A reinstall may leave you with a working official installation, but it cannot promise that every hardware fault, storage fault, or prior alteration has been removed. There is also no general Sony cost estimate in these instructions; any repair or shipping charge depends on region and warranty assessment.

When the PS5 is stuck in Safe Mode

Safe Mode appears every time but the menu works

Start with Repair Console Storage. If the console then boots, check for an official update. If storage repair does not resolve the loop, try Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Use Restore Default Settings when settings appear corrupted but you need to preserve console storage content. These actions do not replace the installed system software.

The console enters Safe Mode but rejects the update

Use the manual USB update checklist: FAT32 or exFAT formatting, exact uppercase folder names, the correct official file, and the path PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Try another compatible USB port or drive if the file is not detected. If an official update still fails, do not substitute a file from a forum or a package intended for another model or purpose.

Only a destructive reset remains

Before selecting Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), verify that you have copied everything recoverable and understand which option you are choosing. The plain reset and the reinstall reset both remove user data; the reinstall additionally removes the current system software before installing Sony’s package.

When Safe Mode will not open

Confirm that the console is fully off, not in Rest Mode, and hold the power button through the second beep. Connect the controller only after the Safe Mode screen appears. If the screen remains blank, the power indicator behaves abnormally, or the console powers off before the menu, repeated button cycles are unlikely to repair a system-level fault.

Use Sony’s PlayStation 5 Support troubleshooting and repair flow. Sony’s Safe Mode guidance directs users to repair assistance when the recovery process does not work. Availability of repair, warranty assessment, and shipping options depends on your country.

Official warnings about altered consoles

Sony Interactive Entertainment states on its system-software page: “If you download or install the update data from a different source, by a different method, or on a console that has been altered or modified in any way, the console might not operate properly and might not be able to install the official update data.” It also warns: “Any of these actions can void the system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Interactive Entertainment.” Read the complete notice at Sony’s PS5 system-software support page.

Those warnings are why this guide does not recommend unofficial firmware, patched update files, downgrade tools, or payloads. An official reinstall can be the correct recovery attempt, but neither Sony’s instructions nor the available support pages promise that it will undo every alteration or make a modified console eligible for warranty repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the console boots again

  1. Finish setup with an official Sony account sign-in and install updates only from the console or Sony’s published download.
  2. Check that games launch, the controller pairs, network settings work, and Rest Mode can be entered and exited normally.
  3. Restore saved data selectively. If a particular save or application triggers the instability, remove that item and test the system before restoring everything.
  4. Keep the USB drive containing Sony’s installer separate from any drive used for unofficial files, and delete obsolete installers from the computer.
  5. Record the error code, date, Safe Mode option used, and whether data was erased. This information helps support staff diagnose the remaining fault.

What this recovery process can and cannot establish

  • It can provide an orderly path through Sony’s documented storage repair, update, reset, and reinstallation choices.
  • It cannot identify which modification caused a particular failure without examining the console.
  • It cannot guarantee that local data will survive a reset, reinstall, storage failure, or hardware fault.
  • It cannot establish a success rate: Sony’s support pages provide no jailbreak-specific statistics or cost estimate.
  • It cannot make unofficial update sources safe or confirm that a modified console remains covered by warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I restore a PS5 after a failed jailbreak attempt?

Identify whether it reaches the home screen, Safe Mode, or neither. Back up data if possible, remove unofficial files, try Sony’s non-erasing Safe Mode options, then use the official USB update. Use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only as a last resort because it deletes all console data.

Can I reinstall PS5 system software from USB?

Yes. Use a PC or Mac and a USB drive formatted FAT32 or exFAT. Create PS5/UPDATE, save Sony’s correctly named PS5UPDATE.PUP there, enter Safe Mode, and choose the matching update or reinstallation option. The ordinary update file and the separate reinstallation file are not interchangeable.

Will reinstalling PS5 system software delete my data?

Yes. Sony says the full reinstallation deletes all data on the PS5, including local settings, installed games, captures, and user data. Back up anything recoverable before selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).

What do I do if my PS5 is stuck in Safe Mode?

Connect the controller by USB and start with Repair Console Storage. If that does not resolve the loop, try Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then Restore Default Settings when appropriate. If an official update or reinstall fails, stop using unofficial files and contact PlayStation Repairs.

Why does my PS5 not recognize the USB update?

Confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT and that the exact uppercase path is PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Re-download the official file, ensure it is not inside an extra folder, and try another compatible drive or port. Do not rename an unofficial package.

Will Sony repair a PS5 that was modified?

Sony warns that installing data from another source or using an outside method on an altered console can affect warranty and repair services. Contact the regional PlayStation support route for an individual assessment; eligibility and any cost vary by country.

The Bottom Line

Use Sony’s recovery sequence, not another jailbreak package: back up what you can, choose the least-destructive Safe Mode option, and verify every USB folder and filename. Treat Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a last resort because it erases all data. If Safe Mode or Sony’s official installation fails, stop experimenting and use PlayStation Repairs.
