To roll a Conan Exiles server back, stop the server, download a copy of the current world, move the live database out of the way, rename the selected backup to the database name the server expects, and restart. The exact filename depends on the server build: Legacy uses game.db, while Enhanced (UE5) uses game_0.db.
Many game-server control panels expose the same operation as Restore Backup. If that option is unavailable or you need to choose files yourself, use the FTP procedure below. A database rollback restores the world state, not your server configuration, so preserve the Config folder separately.

Do not rename a file until you know which database name your installation uses. Open the server’s Saved folder in your host’s file manager or FTP client and inspect the filenames. Conan Exiles installations generally fall into these two patterns:

Case and punctuation matter. A file called game_0_backup_2.db is not the same as game_backup_2.db; the replacement must end up with the exact live name expected by your build.

Prepare a safe rollback
A rollback discards every world change made after the chosen backup. Protect yourself from an incorrect choice or a damaged backup before replacing anything.
- Schedule downtime. Players must be out of the game, and the server must be fully stopped before database files are renamed, deleted, or uploaded.
- Download the current world. Use FTP or the panel’s file manager to copy the present live database to your computer. Keep the original filename and add a clear date to your local copy, for example
game_0-before-rollback-2026-10-14.db. This gives you a way back if the rollback is wrong. - Copy the configuration. Download the entire
Configfolder, especiallyServerSettings.ini. The database contains world data, but configuration files are not stored ingame.dborgame_0.db. - Record the intended restore point. Note the backup filename, timestamp, and file size shown by your host. If several files have similar names, this record prevents you from promoting the wrong one.
- Check available storage. Keep enough remote and local space for the existing world, the backup, and a safety copy. Uploading over the only copy makes recovery harder if the selected file is corrupt.
Do not open and resave a SQLite database in a desktop editor as part of this process. Treat the files as binary save data and change only their names or locations.
Use a hosting-panel restore when available
Some providers automate the file operation. The labels vary, but the workflow is usually:
- Open the server control panel and stop the Conan Exiles instance.
- Open Backups, Restore Backup, or the equivalent page.
- Select the archive or snapshot that predates the unwanted changes. Check its date and, if the panel shows them, the database files included.
- Confirm the warning that current data will be replaced. Do not skip the local download of the current world merely because the panel offers an automatic backup; retention and naming differ by provider.
- Wait for the restore job to finish, then start the server.
- Join the server and inspect a known location, character, clan, building, and thralls to confirm that the expected state returned.
A panel restore is the practical equivalent of stopping the server, moving the live database aside, and promoting a backup. If the panel’s restore fails or selects the wrong snapshot, stop the server again and use the manual method so you can see the individual files.

Restore a save manually over FTP or the file manager
The following procedure applies to both builds after you substitute the correct live filename. Work inside the folder that contains the active save; do not rename files in a local download and assume the remote server changed.
- Stop the server completely. Use the panel’s stop control and wait until its status says stopped. Never rename or replace a save while the game process is still running; the process can write over your change or leave an incomplete database.
- Open the Saved folder. Navigate through the host’s file manager or connect by FTP/SFTP. Locate the live file:
game.dbon Legacy orgame_0.dbon Enhanced. Also list the backup files in that same directory. - Preserve the live database remotely. Rename it rather than deleting it. Examples are
game.dbtogame-pre-rollback.dborgame_0.dbtogame_0-pre-rollback.db. A rename is reversible and leaves the current world available if you need to undo the operation. - Select the backup. Choose the file whose timestamp represents the desired point in time. On a Legacy installation this may be a name such as
game_backup_1.db; on Enhanced it may begame_0_backup_1.db. The number is not a universal date code, so rely on the timestamps and the retention behavior shown by your host. - Promote the backup. Rename the selected backup to the exact live name for the build:
game.dbfor Legacy orgame_0.dbfor Enhanced. If your file manager asks whether to overwrite an existing file, the old live file should already have been renamed; cancel if both files still have the live name. - Handle sidecar files deliberately. Look for files ending in
-waland-shm, such asgame_0.db-walandgame_0.db-shm. These are SQLite write-ahead-log and shared-memory sidecars. One hosting procedure advises deleting stalegame_0.db-shmandgame_0.db-walbefore starting, because files left from a different database can prevent a clean load. Another advises keeping the-waland-shmfiles together with the database when copying a backup. The safe choice depends on where the sidecars came from: keep a matching set supplied with the same backup, but do not attach sidecars from the old live database to an unrelated backup. If you cannot establish that they match, preserve them in a separate remote folder and let the server create fresh sidecars after the old pair has been moved out of the way. - Check names and locations. Confirm that only one file has the active database name, that the extension remains
.db, and that the promoted file is in the server’s originalSaveddirectory. Do not leave a name such asgame_0_backup_1.dband expect the server to discover it automatically. - Start the server. Watch the panel console or log for a normal startup. The first launch after a swap can take longer while the database is opened, but stop the server if it repeatedly crashes or loops instead of completing startup.
- Join and verify. Connect with a character that existed at the backup date. Check the map, player inventory, buildings, storage containers, thralls, pets, clan membership, and other changes you deliberately use as landmarks. The visible state should match the selected restore point, not the world you just moved aside.
Choose the right backup when several exist
Backup numbering is a host convention, not a promise that a higher number is newer. In one Legacy setup, game_backup_1.db is described as the most recent file, while other systems may rotate names differently. Enhanced backups commonly follow the game_0_backup_*.db pattern. Sort by the modification date shown by the panel or FTP client, then compare file sizes and any snapshot description.
When you need the latest usable world
Start with the newest backup that predates the incident. If it loads and contains the desired structures and characters, there is no reason to roll back farther. Remember that all progress after that file’s creation will disappear from the active world.
When the newest backup is damaged
A backup can be corrupt even when the server accepted it as a scheduled copy. If the promoted file causes startup failure, an immediate crash, or an obviously incomplete map, stop the server, move that file aside, and repeat the procedure with the next older backup. Keep each failed candidate so you can identify it later rather than overwriting it.

When dates are ambiguous
Make a temporary local inventory of every candidate: filename, remote timestamp, byte size, and the in-game landmark you expect to see. Do not infer a date from the number in the filename alone. If the host’s displayed timezone is unclear, use the relative order and known player reports to choose a point conservatively.
What a database rollback restores—and what it does not
The Conan Exiles database holds the server’s world state, including players, buildings, thralls, and clans. Promoting an older database therefore rewinds those objects together. It does not restore the server’s configuration files.

Settings such as rates, rules, and other options in ServerSettings.ini remain in the Config folder. If you changed configuration after the backup and want those changes to remain, leave the current Config folder in place. If the configuration was also damaged and you need the older settings, stop the server and replace the relevant files from the dated Config copy you made before the rollback. Treat that as a separate change: restoring a database does not automatically synchronize configuration and world dates.
Do not expect a database restore to recover files outside the save and configuration areas, such as custom server scripts or unrelated host-panel settings. Those must be backed up and restored according to the host’s own file layout.

Troubleshoot a server that will not load the restored save
The server crashes immediately
Stop it and confirm the promoted filename exactly matches the build. A Legacy server looking for game.db will not use a file left as game_0.db, and Enhanced expects game_0.db. Move any sidecar files that came from a different database out of the folder, then retry with the matching set supplied by the selected backup. If the same backup fails again, test an older one.

Check that the file was placed in the active Saved directory and that the old live file was actually renamed. A common mistake is uploading a correctly named database into a similarly named subfolder while the service reads another path. Stop the service, inspect the folder used by the running instance, and repeat the promotion there.
The world loads but recent settings are missing
This is expected if you replaced the Config folder or restored an older ServerSettings.ini. Database and configuration have separate lifecycles. Copy back the configuration version you intend, restart, and test one setting at a time.
No backup will start
Return the newest failed file and its sidecars to a safe holding folder, then test each older backup without deleting your downloaded current world. If every candidate fails, preserve the files for your host’s support team. A community save-recovery browser tool called Supercraft save recovery is described as checking databases without modifying the originals, but its effectiveness is not independently established; use it only on copies, never on the sole remote save.

Verify the rollback from inside the game
A successful process is more than a server that reaches “running” status. Join with an account that existed before the selected backup and perform a short, repeatable inspection:

- Visit a recognizable base and check foundations, doors, containers, crafting stations, and permissions.
- Inspect a clan member or thrall that should have changed around the incident date.
- Ask another trusted player to confirm that the same world state is visible from a second account.
- Make a harmless test change, leave the server, reconnect, and confirm that the new change persists. This verifies that the active database is writable after the restore.
Once the state is confirmed, keep the moved-aside live database and the selected backup offline for a while instead of deleting them immediately. They are your fastest recovery options if a player reports that an important item or structure is still missing.
Prevent the next rollback from becoming a crisis
Keep dated copies of both the database and the Config folder outside the server host. Before updates, mod changes, major construction, or administrative edits, create an additional manual copy so the point you may need is not dependent on the host’s rotation schedule.
Document the filename pattern used by your build, the FTP path to the active Saved folder, and the panel’s restore steps. A short runbook should state who can stop the server, where current-world copies are stored, and how to verify a restore with known landmarks. Periodically test that a downloaded backup can be identified and promoted on a non-production instance or during a planned maintenance window; a backup that has never been checked is only an assumption.
