First, determine what happened: an app may only be hidden from the Home Screen, disabled in settings, or genuinely deleted. Those states use different recovery paths. On an iPhone or iPad, check App Library before downloading anything. On Android, use Google Play’s Manage apps & device screen and distinguish Install from Enable. On a Samsung Galaxy device, check both Google Play and Galaxy Store because availability depends on the device and store.
These are software procedures: ordinary restoration does not require a cable, repair kit, cleaner app, third-party recovery utility, or physical replacement part. Menu names can differ by iPhone/iPad version, Galaxy model, carrier, and software version.
Identify whether the app is hidden, disabled, or deleted
A missing icon does not prove that the app was uninstalled. Use this distinction before changing settings:

“Pre-installed” also does not mean every phone treats an app identically. Some system apps can be removed and reinstalled, some can only be disabled, and some cannot be uninstalled or disabled at all. The controls shown on your device are the best indication of which case applies.

Restore a pre-installed app on an iPhone or iPad
1. Check App Library before reinstalling
Apple separates removing an app from the Home Screen from choosing Delete App. If you removed only the icon, the app remains installed. Swipe left past the last Home Screen page to open App Library, browse the categories, or use the search field. Tap the app to open it. This is the quickest fix because no download is needed.
If you find it in App Library and want an icon again, press and hold the app, then use the Home Screen option offered by iOS or iPadOS. The exact wording and placement can vary by software release, but the important test is whether the app launches from App Library.
2. Redownload an app that was actually deleted
When the app is no longer in App Library, use Apple’s purchase-history list rather than relying only on a general App Store search:
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account photo or profile button.
- Choose Apps & Purchase History, then Your Apps.
- Select Not on this [device].
- Find the missing app and tap the download or redownload button.
Apple documents this process in Redownload apps from Apple. If the app was obtained by a family member and Family Sharing applies, check the family member’s purchases from the same area instead of assuming it must appear under your own account.
3. Understand the limits for built-in Apple apps
Apple allows some built-in apps to be deleted and downloaded again, but only while the app remains available in the App Store for that device. If it does not appear in the purchase list or store search, that is evidence of an availability or compatibility limit, not proof that the phone is damaged.
Deleting a built-in app can have consequences beyond removing its icon. Apple states: “When you remove a built-in app from your iPhone, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. Removing built-in apps from your iPhone can also affect other system functionality.” Read Apple’s explanation in Remove or delete apps from iPhone before deleting additional system apps. Reinstalling the app may not recreate data or configuration files that were removed with it.
4. If the App Store does not show the app
- Confirm that you are using the Apple Account that originally downloaded the app, particularly if the device changed owners.
- Check Not on this [device] rather than only the regular search results.
- Consider whether the app is no longer offered for your iPhone or iPad model, operating-system version, or region.
- If it was a built-in app and Apple’s store does not offer a compatible download, use Apple’s support guidance for the specific device. Do not treat an unofficial package or factory reset as a normal recovery step.
Restore a pre-installed app on Android
1. Open Google Play’s app-management list
Google Play can show both removed and disabled apps. Use the account menu:
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Open the Manage tab.
The list may initially show only apps currently associated with the device. To reveal an app that is no longer installed, tap the filter and select This device, then Not installed. Google’s instructions specifically say: “If you can’t find the app, at the top, tap This device and then Not installed.” The complete procedure is in Reinstall & re-enable apps – Android.

2. Choose Install or Enable deliberately
Read the action button next to the app:
- Install means the app is not currently installed. Tap it and wait for Google Play to complete the download.
- Enable means the app is present but turned off. Tap Enable; downloading it again is not the relevant action.
Google says apps that came with a device can be turned back on. If the app is disabled, it may not appear in the normal app drawer or respond to search until you enable it.
3. Use the correct Google Account
For an app previously bought on Google Play, Google requires the same Google Account used for that purchase. An account mismatch can make an app appear to be missing from the library even when the app itself is still available. Switch to the account shown in Google Play’s profile menu, then repeat Manage apps & device and the This device > Not installed filter.
4. Check the result in the app drawer
After installation or enabling finishes, open the Android app drawer and search for the app. If it launches there but no Home Screen icon is present, the recovery worked; only the shortcut was missing. Add the shortcut using your launcher’s normal press-and-hold controls. Launcher commands vary, so avoid treating a missing shortcut as another deletion.

An app may be excluded because it is incompatible with the phone, unavailable in the account’s region, or no longer distributed. Google Play’s management list and store page are the official availability checks. If neither offers Install or Enable, do not infer that installing an APK from an unknown website is safe or supported. Consult the phone maker’s instructions for the exact model and Android version first.
Restore a pre-installed app on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet
Check both official stores
Galaxy devices can receive apps through Google Play and Galaxy Store. Search both when a pre-installed app is missing. Samsung explains that only apps compatible with the device are available for download. A Google Account is required for Google Play, while a Samsung account is required for Galaxy Store.
- Open Google Play Store and follow Profile icon > Manage apps & device > Manage. Use the This device > Not installed filter and choose Install or Enable when offered.
- Open Galaxy Store, sign in to the Samsung account associated with the device, and search for the app. Install it only if Galaxy Store presents it as compatible.
- Use the Galaxy device’s app-management controls to check whether the app is disabled or whether only its Home Screen icon was removed.
Know what Samsung may not allow
Some pre-installed Galaxy apps cannot be uninstalled, and Samsung states, “Not all pre-installed apps can be disabled.” In those cases, an absent icon may reflect a hidden shortcut or a different app-list setting rather than deletion. The available controls depend on the specific app.
Samsung warns that app-management screens vary by wireless carrier, software version, and model. Therefore, a path shown on one Galaxy phone may use different labels or placement on another. Samsung’s model-specific guidance is at Manage apps on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
What you need before starting
Have the device’s exact model and operating-system version available if you need manufacturer support. Also identify the account used on the device: an Apple Account for App Store history, a Google Account for Google Play purchases and management, or a Samsung account for Galaxy Store. On a shared device, check whether Family Sharing or another household account originally obtained the app.

Start with the least disruptive check. Open the app library or drawer, then inspect the official management list, and only then attempt a store download. This order prevents a second installation attempt when the app is merely hidden or disabled. It also keeps you from deleting related data while trying to fix a shortcut.

Data, account, and compatibility pitfalls
Reinstalling an app is not the same as restoring its previous data. Apple specifically warns that deleting a built-in app removes related user data and configuration files and can affect other system functionality. A redownload may therefore return the app without recreating local settings. If the app uses a supported account-sync or backup feature, sign in to that service after installation, but do not assume that every local file is recoverable.
An account mismatch is another common reason a legitimate app seems absent. On Apple devices, review the Apple Account’s purchase history and Family Sharing relationships. On Android, switch to the Google Account that originally obtained a paid app. On Galaxy, remember that Galaxy Store requires a Samsung account while Google Play uses a Google Account. Store listings and purchase histories are account-specific.

An app that was present on an older phone may no longer be offered for a newer or modified system image. Do not bypass such a message with an unknown APK simply because the app name appears in a web search.
When to contact the device maker
Contact Apple, Google, Samsung, or the carrier when the exact model still cannot show the app in its official library, management list, or store. Provide the model number, operating-system version, account type, and the exact button or error displayed. This information lets support distinguish a disabled component from a discontinued or incompatible listing.
Manufacturer guidance is especially important after a carrier change, system-image modification, or major software update. Menu paths can move, and a model-specific support page may document a control that is absent from a generic tutorial. Escalate before attempting a factory reset: a reset erases personal content and does not guarantee that an unavailable app will return.
What to do when the normal restore button is missing
The app is visible only in search or an app library
Open it from that location first. If it launches, no reinstallation is needed. Restore the Home Screen shortcut through the launcher or Home Screen menu for your platform. A shortcut problem should not be treated as data loss.
The app appears with Enable, not Install
Tap Enable and wait for the app to return to the app drawer. Searching for a fresh download can waste time because a disabled system component is already stored on the device.

The app appears in neither the store nor management list
Check the signed-in account, then check the other official store used by the device. On Galaxy hardware, that means both Google Play and Galaxy Store. If the app remains absent, compatibility, regional distribution, carrier customization, or a changed system image may be involved. No universal manufacturer procedure covers every modified Android build, so use the maker’s support instructions for the exact model.
The store says the app is incompatible
Do not bypass the compatibility message as a routine step. An app may depend on an operating-system version, hardware feature, certification status, or regional listing. Installing an unofficial package can introduce security and update problems and is not part of the documented Apple, Google, or Samsung recovery procedures.
The app returns but its old data is missing
Deleting a built-in iPhone app removes related user data and configuration files, according to Apple. A successful redownload therefore does not guarantee that locally stored settings or data will reappear. Check any platform-supported account sync or backup associated with the app, but do not assume that reinstalling alone restores deleted data.

You are considering a factory reset
A reset is not a first-line solution for a missing pre-installed app. It erases device content and does not guarantee that an app absent from the official store will become available. Complete the App Library, app-management, account, and official-store checks first, then contact the device maker if the exact model still cannot restore the app.

Why the exact device matters
There is no single “restore pre-installed app” button shared by all phones and tablets. Apple’s App Library and purchase-history flow differs from Google Play’s Install/Enable controls. Samsung adds Galaxy Store and account requirements, while carriers and software versions can change the labels and available actions. Even two devices from the same product family may expose different controls when their Android, One UI, or carrier software differs.
The safest recovery method is consequently the narrowest one: use the built-in library to find a hidden app, use Enable for a disabled app, and use the official store tied to the device and account for a deleted app. If that official route does not exist, treat the absence as an availability question and obtain model-specific support rather than forcing an unsupported installation.

Why does Google Play not show my deleted app?
Tap your profile icon, open Manage apps & device > Manage, and change the filter to This device > Not installed. Also verify the Google Account that originally obtained the app.
Do I need both a Google Account and a Samsung account on a Galaxy device?
