If a Pixel feature vanished after an Android update or a settings change, do not assume Google removed it. The cause may be a changed setting, a revoked permission, an app problem, model-specific availability, a battery mode, or a software fault. Restore it by identifying whether the feature belongs to one app or to Android itself, checking the matching setting and permissions, restarting and updating, and only then escalating to app or Pixel support. A factory reset is a last resort because it erases the phone.
Why did a feature disappear after my Pixel updated?
The word “feature” can describe several different things: a control in Android’s Settings app, a capability of the Pixel hardware, or a button or workflow inside a single app. Those categories fail differently, so the first useful action is to define exactly what changed.

Google’s Pixel guidance also warns that menu names, available steps, and supported capabilities vary by phone and Android version. Record your exact Pixel model, Android version, the feature’s name, and the last time it worked before changing anything. That information prevents a model limitation from being mistaken for an update bug and makes a later support request much easier to answer.
Step 1: Establish whether the feature is app-specific or built into Android
Signs that the problem belongs to one app
If the missing control exists only inside one application—for example, a camera mode, location-based action, microphone button, or document-sharing option—treat it as an app issue first. Open another app that uses the same phone capability. If other apps can use it, the phone-level permission is probably not the only factor; the affected app may have its own account, subscription, configuration, or update problem.

Write down the app’s name and version if the app exposes that information. Do not start by resetting the whole phone for a single-app symptom. Google’s app troubleshooting path is designed to isolate the app, and it directs users to the app developer when the app remains defective after the standard fixes.
Signs that the problem belongs to Android or the phone
A missing option in Settings, a display behavior that changes everywhere, or a capability unavailable across multiple apps points to Android, a device-level permission, a battery mode, or model support. Use the Pixel model and Android version you recorded to look up the feature’s specific Google instructions when the general checks below do not identify it.
Step 2: Restore an app feature by checking permissions and privacy controls
Use the app’s permission page
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the affected app. If it is not visible, tap See all apps and choose it from the full list.
- Tap Permissions.
- Review the permission type the feature needs, such as camera, microphone, location, photos and videos, or nearby devices.
- Choose an access level that permits the feature while granting no broader access than necessary.
Permission labels and choices can differ by Android release. If a permission is already allowed, do not repeatedly toggle it without checking the phone-wide privacy controls; a global block can override an app-level choice.
Check Android’s permission manager
Android provides a second route that groups apps by permission:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & Privacy.
- Under Privacy, tap Permission manager.
- Choose the relevant permission category and inspect the affected app.
The same privacy area includes Privacy Dashboard, Camera access, and Microphone access. Privacy Dashboard can show recent permission use; the camera and microphone switches can block every app even when an individual app’s permission page says access is allowed. Turn on only the system access required for the feature, then reopen the app and test it.

Account for an older unused-app behavior
Google documents a version-limited Play Protect behavior for Android 6.0 through Android 10: permissions for apps that have not been used for three months may be reset. This is a possible explanation only on those Android versions and is not evidence that newer Pixel releases routinely remove permissions. If your phone is in that version range, check the app’s permissions again after launching it.
Step 3: Restore a built-in feature through the relevant Settings category
Start with Display & touch for display controls
For a display-related option, open Settings > Display & touch. Look for the named control there or under an Advanced section. Google’s display documentation is model-specific: an option can be present on one Pixel generation and absent on another without an installation fault. Compare the feature with the support information for your exact model before treating a missing control as corruption.
Check battery modes before blaming an update
Battery modes can intentionally change how a feature operates. Google specifically states that Battery Saver disables Smooth Display. If Smooth Display is the missing or inactive behavior, inspect the current battery mode and test again after leaving Battery Saver. Do not generalize that rule to every Pixel feature; it is a documented interaction for Smooth Display.
Inspect the feature’s own prerequisites
Some controls appear only when another setting, permission, account state, or hardware condition is satisfied. Read the explanatory text beside the control instead of enabling unrelated options at random. If the control is absent from the expected category, note the exact Android version and model and move to feature-specific Pixel help. A settings search can locate a moved control, but a search result does not prove that the phone supports the capability.
Step 4: Restart, then install available updates
Restart before making deeper changes
Once the setting and permission look correct, restart the Pixel and test the feature immediately after the phone comes back. A restart can clear a temporary service or app state without deleting personal data. If the feature returns, record which change preceded the recovery; that detail can help identify whether the original problem was transient.

Check Android and app updates
Use the phone’s system software-update control in Settings and install any update offered for your model. Then open the app’s page in the Play Store and check for an app update. Availability and menu wording differ by Android version, carrier, and app, so follow the labels shown on your phone rather than a screenshot from another Pixel release.

Apply that rule to the troubleshooting sequence: after changing a permission, installing an app update, or completing an app-specific repair step, restart and test before stacking on another change. Otherwise, you cannot tell which action restored—or altered—the feature.
Step 5: Isolate an app fault from a phone-wide fault
When only one app is affected
Continue with Google’s app-specific troubleshooting for the affected application. Where appropriate, force-stop the app, reopen it, and follow the remaining steps in Google’s Pixel app-fix guidance. The exact sequence can vary with the Android release and the app’s behavior. If the function still fails after the documented steps, contact the app’s developer; the developer controls app code, account rules, and app-side service availability that Pixel support cannot change.

A single-app problem is not a good reason to erase the phone. Keep the scope narrow until evidence shows that other apps or system controls are failing too.
When several apps or system controls are affected
If the same capability fails across multiple apps, or unrelated built-in functions changed at the same time, use Pixel-specific device troubleshooting for the symptom. Google’s Pixel support center is the appropriate escalation point when the phone-wide steps do not restore the capability. Provide the model, Android version, feature name, exact symptom, and the steps already completed.
Use a controlled retest
- Test the feature immediately after a restart.
- Test the same capability in a second app when possible.
- Check whether the failure occurs only on cellular data, Wi-Fi, or a particular account; record the condition rather than changing several settings at once.
- Capture the exact error text or the location where the control disappeared.
This record distinguishes a missing user-interface control from a feature that is visible but blocked, and it gives support a reproducible symptom instead of a general report that “the update broke it.”

An Android update can move a control, rename a category, or expose different options for different Pixel models. Treat a changed layout as a navigation problem until you have checked model support and the relevant prerequisites. Search Settings for the feature’s name, then verify the result’s surrounding category and explanatory text. If the search finds nothing, compare the feature’s documented availability with your exact model and Android version.
Do not infer removal from a single screenshot or from instructions written for another release. Google’s support pages explicitly note that steps can apply only to particular Android versions. A path that works on one Pixel may be absent or labeled differently on another.

Factory reset: the last resort, not the first fix
Why a reset is disproportionate for a missing permission
A factory data reset removes all data from the phone and uninstalls apps together with their associated data. It is therefore inappropriate as the first response to one missing setting, one revoked permission, or one malfunctioning app. A reset also creates a recovery task: you must restore accounts, reinstall apps, and recreate settings after the phone restarts.
Verify your backup before considering it
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google services.
- Tap Backup.
- Review what the backup screen says is backed up.
Google says this screen shows the items included in the phone’s backup. Confirm that the information you need is represented there and make any additional copies required by individual apps before erasing the device. A backup indicator is not a guarantee that every app’s private data, downloads, or local files will return automatically.
Decide whether the evidence justifies erasing the phone
Consider a reset only after the relevant setting and permissions are correct, the phone and apps are updated, restarts have not helped, and Pixel-specific troubleshooting points to a persistent system fault. If the symptom is confined to one third-party app, contact its developer instead of resetting the entire device. If the problem remains broad and reproducible, contact Google Pixel support before erasing the phone so you can preserve useful diagnostic information and confirm that a reset is warranted.
A practical decision tree for a missing Pixel feature
- Name the feature. Record the Pixel model, Android version, affected app if any, and the last known working time.
- Classify the scope. One app means an app-permission path; several apps or Settings means a system/device path.
- Check permissions. Use Settings > Apps > app > Permissions, then Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager and the global camera or microphone controls when relevant.
- Check the built-in setting. For display behavior, inspect Settings > Display & touch and Advanced options, and verify model support.
- Check interactions. Look for a battery mode or privacy switch that intentionally suppresses the feature; Smooth Display is specifically disabled by Battery Saver.
- Restart and update. Restart after each meaningful change, then check Android and app updates.
- Escalate by scope. Use app troubleshooting and the app developer for one-app failures; use Pixel device troubleshooting and Google Pixel support for phone-wide failures.
- Protect data. Review Settings > Google services > Backup before any factory reset, and treat erasure as an advanced final step.
When the general sequence does not restore the feature
The exact feature still matters. A general permissions check cannot establish whether a particular camera mode, display option, connectivity function, or accessibility control is supported on your model. At that point, use the feature-specific Google Pixel help page for your Android version and hardware. Keep the diagnostic record: the original symptom, the setting path you checked, the permission state, battery mode, update status, restart results, and any error message.
For support, describe what changed rather than only saying that the phone was updated. “The Smooth Display control is absent on my model while Battery Saver is on” is actionable; “the update removed my display feature” is an unverified conclusion. If support confirms that the capability is not available for your model or release, no setting change can restore it; if it identifies a software defect, follow the version-specific remediation it provides.
