To restore a MySQL database in phpMyAdmin, obtain a compatible SQL dump, select the correct destination database, open Import (called SQL on some older installations), choose the dump, and click Go. After phpMyAdmin finishes, verify tables, data, views, triggers, and application connectivity. For dumps that exceed PHP limits, use the configured server-side UploadDir or the MySQL command-line client instead of a browser upload.
What a phpMyAdmin restore actually does
A restore replays statements stored in a dump file against a MySQL database. The dump may contain database objects such as tables, indexes, views, and triggers; row data; or both structure and data. A dump created by an export operation is normally the restore artifact, provided it includes the objects and records your application needs.
Recommended Free Tools
phpMyAdmin’s documentation describes the role of SQL this way: “SQL can be used to make any manipulation on data, it is also useful for restoring backed up data.” Importing is therefore not a file-copy operation. phpMyAdmin sends the statements in the dump to MySQL, and MySQL creates, alters, or populates objects as those statements require.
The database you select before importing determines where statements are executed when the dump does not explicitly name another database. Choosing the wrong database can put otherwise valid tables in the wrong place, so database selection is the first safety check.

What you need before starting
A usable dump file
Keep the original dump unchanged and work from a copy when possible. Confirm its extension and approximate size. Common inputs are plain .sql files and, when compression support is enabled, compressed dumps such as .sql.gz or .sql.bz2. A compressed file is still a SQL dump; compression only changes how it is transferred and read.
Do not assume that a file named “backup” contains everything. A structure-only export will create objects without restoring rows. A data-only export will not create missing tables. Open a copy in a text editor when practical and look for statements such as CREATE TABLE, INSERT INTO, CREATE VIEW, or trigger definitions. Very large files may be impractical to open in a desktop editor, so rely on the export settings or the person who produced the dump.
Access to the destination
- A working phpMyAdmin login connected to the MySQL server that should receive the data.
- Permission to select the destination database and create or modify its objects.
- The database name, server version, and credentials used by the application that will consume the restored data.
- A maintenance window if the application must be stopped while tables are replaced or populated.
Version information
Record the MySQL version that produced the dump and the version at the destination. Dumps moved between different MySQL generations can fail because syntax, defaults, reserved words, authentication behavior, or object definitions changed. phpMyAdmin’s documentation specifically calls out problems when importing dumps from versions before 5.7.6 into MySQL 5.7.7 and later. That example does not mean every cross-version import fails; it means version compatibility should be checked before a production restore.
Prepare the destination database safely
- Decide whether this is a new database or a replacement. Importing into an empty database is less risky than importing over live tables. If the goal is a replacement, document which existing tables will be dropped, truncated, or overwritten by statements in the dump.
- Take a fresh backup of the current destination. A restore can make irreversible changes. Keep a separate copy outside the database you are about to modify.
- Check application dependencies. Note the expected database name, table prefixes, character set, collation, views, stored routines, and triggers. A technically successful import can still leave an application broken if it points to a different database or expects objects that were not included.
- Check available space. The SQL file’s size is not a reliable measure of the final database size. Indexes, temporary tables, and expanded uncompressed data can require substantially more space than the dump file itself.
- Plan for locking and downtime. Large inserts and table changes can hold locks or consume server resources. Prevent writes to the old database during a replacement restore unless your migration plan explicitly handles concurrent changes.
Restore a dump through the phpMyAdmin browser interface
Step 1: Sign in and identify the server
Open phpMyAdmin and sign in. Confirm that the server shown by the interface is the intended MySQL instance, especially if you administer development, staging, and production servers from similar URLs. A successful import on the wrong server is still an operational failure.
Step 2: Select the destination database
In the navigation panel, click the database that should receive the dump. Do not open the import form from the server-wide home screen unless you intentionally want to use a database-qualified dump that controls its own destination. The normal workflow is to select the database first, then open its import controls.
Step 3: Open Import
With the database selected, click the Import tab. Older phpMyAdmin installations may label the corresponding area SQL. The wording and layout vary by version, but the purpose is the same: submit a file containing SQL statements to the selected database.

Step 4: Choose the dump
Use the file selector to choose the .sql dump. If the installation supports compressed imports, you may be able to select .sql.gz or .sql.bz2 directly. Do not rename a non-SQL file merely to make its extension look correct; phpMyAdmin still needs valid SQL content or a supported compressed SQL format.
Some installations also let you drag a dump file into the browser window. Drag-and-drop does not remove the server’s upload, memory, or execution limits; it is only another way to supply the same file to the import form.
Step 5: Submit the import
Review the selected filename and destination, then click Go. Keep the browser window open while phpMyAdmin submits and processes the file. Depending on the dump and server, the interface may show progress, a success message, warnings, or an error containing the SQL statement that failed.
Step 6: Record the result
Save the completion message or error text before navigating away. A green or successful-looking response only confirms what phpMyAdmin reported; it does not prove that every expected table, row, view, trigger, or application feature is present. Verification is a separate operational step.
What file formats can be imported?
| File | When it works | What to check |
|---|---|---|
.sql |
Standard plain-text SQL dump | Statements must match the destination MySQL version and the selected database must be correct. |
.sql.gz |
Supported when the phpMyAdmin/PHP installation enables compressed import handling | Confirm that the server accepts gzip-compressed SQL rather than requiring you to decompress it first. |
.sql.bz2 |
Supported when the installation enables bzip2-compressed import handling | Confirm bzip2 support; otherwise decompress the file before importing. |
Support for compressed formats is an installation capability, not a guarantee shared by every hosting account. If a compressed file is rejected, decompress a copy and import the resulting SQL file, or use a server-side or command-line method that supports the compression format.
Why large SQL dumps fail in a browser
Browser imports pass through PHP and the web server before MySQL receives all statements. Four PHP settings commonly restrict submitted dumps:

| Setting | What it limits | Typical symptom | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
upload_max_filesize |
Maximum size of an uploaded file | The file selector accepts the file, but submission reports that it is too large or the request contains no usable file. | The limit applies to an individual uploaded file. |
post_max_size |
Maximum size of the complete HTTP POST request | A large upload fails unexpectedly, sometimes without a useful import error. | post_max_size must be larger than upload_max_filesize, because the request also contains form fields and overhead. |
memory_limit |
PHP memory available while processing the request | Processing stops with a memory-related error or the request terminates before completion. | Higher upload limits do not guarantee enough memory to parse and process the dump. |
max_execution_time |
How long PHP may execute the request | The import times out during a long parse or a large series of statements. | Web-server and proxy timeouts can impose additional limits even when this value is high. |
These values are server configuration, not phpMyAdmin preferences. On managed hosting, you may not have permission to change them. If you do control PHP, increase limits conservatively, ensure the web server and proxy allow the longer request, and restore the original policy after the operation if your hosting standards require it. Raising a limit does not solve an incompatible dump or a MySQL permission error.
Recognize a PHP limit before retrying
- The file is rejected immediately based on size, before any SQL statement appears in the result.
- The request returns a generic web-server error or a blank response rather than a MySQL error.
- The import consistently stops after roughly the same elapsed time, suggesting an execution timeout.
- Small dumps work but the same procedure fails with a larger dump.
Repeatedly retrying a timed-out import can leave a partial database. Before trying again, determine whether statements already ran and whether the dump is safe to replay. For a clean replacement, restore the pre-import backup or use a fresh empty database rather than stacking repeated attempts onto a partially populated one.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Use the server-side UploadDir for a large dump
phpMyAdmin can be configured with a server-side $cfg['UploadDir'] directory. The administrator places the dump in that directory, after which phpMyAdmin can offer it in the import file selector. This avoids sending the entire file through the browser upload request and is useful when the browser cannot handle the file size.
- Ask the server administrator for the configured
$cfg['UploadDir']path and the permitted file format. - Copy the dump into that directory using the approved server transfer method.
- Protect the directory and file permissions according to the server’s security policy; the dump may contain credentials or personal data.
- Open the destination database in phpMyAdmin and select Import.
- Choose the server-side file shown by phpMyAdmin and click Go.
- Remove the dump from
UploadDirafter confirming that the restore and verification are complete, unless retention is required.
The exact directory path and upload-list behavior depend on the phpMyAdmin configuration. If the file does not appear, check the configured path, ownership, permissions, filename, and whether the administrator has enabled UploadDir support.
Use the MySQL command line when shell access is available
The command-line client avoids the browser’s HTTP upload path and is generally easier to automate and log for very large files. A basic import of a plain SQL dump is:
mysql -u USER -p DATABASE_NAME < dump.sql
Replace USER, DATABASE_NAME, and dump.sql with the account, destination database, and actual file path. The client prompts for the password after -p; putting a password directly in a command can expose it through shell history or process listings, so avoid that unless your environment has a specific secure mechanism.

Run the command from a host that can reach the MySQL server. The account must have the privileges required by the statements in the dump. Capture standard output and errors, and check the client’s exit status. A command that returns to the shell is not, by itself, proof that the application is fully restored; perform the same database and application checks described below.
For a compressed dump, either decompress it according to your operating system’s approved process and pipe the SQL to the client, or use a compression-aware workflow supported by your environment. Do not delete the original compressed backup until the restored database has been verified.
Choose the right import method
| Method | Best fit | Advantages | Constraints and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser upload | Small or moderate dumps and routine one-off restores | Available wherever phpMyAdmin is available; no shell client required; straightforward for less technical operators. | Constrained by upload_max_filesize, post_max_size, memory_limit, execution timeouts, web-server limits, and browser stability. |
Server-side UploadDir |
Large dumps when you have server file-transfer access but want to keep the phpMyAdmin interface | Avoids the browser’s file-upload transfer; keeps the import operation visible in phpMyAdmin. | Requires administrator configuration, secure file placement, correct permissions, and cleanup of sensitive files. |
| MySQL command line | Very large or repeatable restores when shell access is available | Bypasses PHP upload limits; works well with scripts, logs, and controlled maintenance procedures. | Requires shell access, a compatible client, network access, database privileges, and careful credential handling. |
The official documentation describes these mechanisms but does not publish benchmark timings or failure-rate comparisons. Select based on dump size, available access, timeout risk, privileges, and whether you need a repeatable, auditable procedure rather than on an assumed speed ranking.

Compare source and destination versions
Find the version that created the dump and the version that will execute it. A dump produced by an older server can contain syntax or definitions that a newer server interprets differently; a dump from a newer server can use features unavailable on an older destination. The documented pre-5.7.6 to 5.7.7-and-later transition is one known compatibility boundary.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Inspect the first failing statement
When phpMyAdmin reports an error, record the statement or object named in the message. Check whether it is a reserved-word conflict, unsupported clause, character-set or collation definition, storage-engine requirement, view dependency, trigger delimiter issue, or permission failure. Do not remove statements blindly: deleting a failed CREATE TABLE can make every later INSERT for that table fail as well.
Test on a non-production copy
Import the dump into an empty test database on the destination version first. This reveals compatibility problems without changing live data and lets you identify required edits. Keep a record of any edits made to a working copy of the dump so the production procedure is reproducible.

Verify the restore after phpMyAdmin reports success
Verification should be treated as an operational step, not as an assumed outcome. Use the export manifest, application schema documentation, or the pre-restore backup to define what “complete” means.
Check database objects
- Confirm that every expected table appears in the selected database.
- Check views and make sure they reference objects that exist on the destination.
- Check triggers and stored routines if the application depends on them.
- Confirm indexes and primary or foreign keys where the application requires them.
Check data
- Compare row counts for critical tables with the source system’s counts or the backup manifest.
- Open representative records, including the newest and oldest records that should be present.
- Check date, time-zone, character-set, and binary columns for obvious conversion or truncation problems.
- Look for import errors or warnings that may have skipped individual rows while allowing later statements to run.
Check the application
- Confirm that the application configuration points to the restored server and database name.
- Test login, a read operation, a write operation if safe, and a representative feature that uses views or triggers.
- Review application and MySQL logs for connection, permission, missing-table, and collation errors.
- Keep the old database or backup available until the business owner accepts the restored system.
Troubleshoot common restore failures
“No file was uploaded” or the file is too large
Check upload_max_filesize and post_max_size, remembering that the latter must be larger. If you cannot change PHP configuration, use UploadDir or the command-line client. Confirm that the file selector points to the intended dump and that the browser request is reaching the same phpMyAdmin server you inspected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe import times out
A timeout can come from max_execution_time, the web server, a proxy, or the database operation itself. Do not immediately rerun the full file. Determine whether tables or rows were already created, then restore into a clean database or revert to the pre-import backup before choosing UploadDir or the command line.
Memory is exhausted
Large or complex dumps can exceed PHP’s memory_limit while phpMyAdmin processes them. Increasing upload size alone will not fix this. Use a server-side or command-line import, or have the administrator adjust memory within the server’s capacity and policy.
SQL syntax or unknown-object errors appear
Compare MySQL versions, inspect the first failing statement, and test the dump on a non-production database. Confirm that required databases, users, engines, character sets, and referenced tables exist. A dump created for a different MySQL generation may need a controlled conversion rather than repeated retries.
The import completes but the application fails
Check that you selected the correct database, that the application credentials have privileges on it, and that all required tables, views, triggers, routines, and rows were included. Also check table prefixes, character sets, and the application’s configured server hostname. A successful SQL submission does not guarantee an application-level restore.
A compressed file is rejected
Compressed import support may not be enabled on the installation. Decompress a copy and import the plain SQL, place the file in the configured UploadDir if that method accepts it, or use a compression-aware command-line workflow.
A repeatable production restore workflow
- Identify the source dump, its creation date, its source MySQL version, and whether it contains structure, data, or both.
- Record the destination server version, database name, maintenance window, and operator responsible for approval.
- Back up the current destination and preserve the original dump.
- Test the dump on an empty database using the same destination version when possible.
- Select browser upload, UploadDir, or command line based on size, access, timeout risk, and logging needs.
- Import into the intended database, watching for errors rather than assuming a completed request is complete.
- Verify objects, row counts, representative records, and application behavior.
- Document the result, including errors, warnings, configuration changes, and the location of retained backups.
- Remove temporary copies from UploadDir or other shared locations when retention is not required.
This sequence separates transport problems from SQL compatibility problems and separates SQL completion from application verification. That distinction is what makes a restore dependable rather than merely successful-looking.
