If a power plan seems to have disappeared in Windows 11, first determine whether you are looking for the newer Power mode control or a classic named scheme such as High performance. Open Settings > System > Power & battery for Power mode, or Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options for classic plans. Then use the documented powercfg commands to list schemes registered on your PC and activate one by its own GUID. This approach is safer than blindly running an undocumented reset, and it accounts for differences between hardware manufacturers and laptop models.
First decide which power control is missing
Windows 11 exposes two related but differently presented systems. Confusing them is the most common reason people ask, “How do I restore a missing power plan in Windows 11?”
| What you cannot find or change | Where to look | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Power mode | Settings > System > Power & battery | A current Windows control for choosing a balance between efficiency and performance. Microsoft lists Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance, although the choices shown can vary with the device and manufacturer. Microsoft’s Power mode instructions |
| Named plans such as Balanced or High performance | Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options | Classic power schemes. These are the schemes that powercfg /list reports and that powercfg /setactive can activate by GUID. Microsoft’s powercfg reference |
| Power mode is present but cannot be changed | Check the selected scheme in classic Power Options | Microsoft says a selected custom plan can prevent changing Power mode and suggests selecting Balanced in Power Options. Microsoft Support |
“Best performance” in Settings is not simply a renamed entry in the classic list. The labels and controls belong to different interfaces, so a laptop can show a Power mode selector without displaying every classic scheme, or show classic schemes that do not map one-for-one to the Settings labels.

You are viewing the newer Settings interface
Settings may show only the Power mode choices supported by the current Windows installation, firmware and manufacturer configuration. Microsoft documents the three common labels, but does not promise that every Windows 11 PC will expose all of them. A manufacturer can also supply its own policy or utility that changes which options are available. Seeing Balanced in Settings therefore does not prove that a classic High performance scheme is missing.

A custom scheme is selected
If a custom classic plan is active, Windows may prevent the Power mode selector from being changed. Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options, select Balanced, and then return to Settings > System > Power & battery. This is the specific situation Microsoft calls out; it is not a guarantee that every missing scheme will reappear.
The scheme is not registered on this installation
A plan can be absent from the Control Panel list because its scheme is no longer registered, because software or an OEM utility changed the available schemes, or because the device was configured with a narrower set of options. The built-in command-line tool can distinguish an undisplayed scheme from one that is genuinely not registered: powercfg /list reports the schemes Windows knows about.
The device exposes different capabilities
Power behavior depends on hardware, firmware, drivers and manufacturer settings. Two Windows 11 computers can therefore present different plans. Treat the output and labels on your own PC as authoritative instead of copying a plan GUID or assuming that another laptop’s list should match yours.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check Windows 11 Power mode first
Use this path when the missing item is the control in Settings rather than a named classic scheme.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Find Power mode and open its selection menu.
- Note which choices are offered: Microsoft documents Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance, but the available choices can depend on hardware and the manufacturer.
- If the menu is unavailable or will not change, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and select Balanced. Microsoft identifies a selected custom plan as one reason Power mode cannot be changed. See Microsoft’s documented Power mode guidance.
Do not treat the absence of a High performance label in this menu as proof of damage. High performance is a classic scheme name; Settings may instead expose Best performance, or may offer fewer choices on a particular device.

Open the classic Power Options list
When the reader’s question is “How do I get High performance back?” or another named plan has disappeared, use the classic interface.
- Open Control Panel. You can search for it from the Start menu.
- Select System and Security.
- Select Power Options.
- Expand Show additional plans if that link appears.
- Read the plan names and note which one has the selected radio button.
If High performance or another expected name is present, select it there. If only Balanced is visible, do not assume that a reset is required; inspect the registered schemes with powercfg before changing anything.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use powercfg to find and activate a registered scheme
powercfg is included with Windows. Microsoft documents commands for listing, inspecting, activating, duplicating, exporting and importing power schemes. Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell. Use an elevated window if Windows reports that administrator permission is required.
List every scheme Windows has registered
powercfg /list
The output includes a scheme name and a GUID for each registered plan. The line marked as active identifies the scheme currently in use. Copy the GUID exactly as it appears on your computer; a GUID from another PC may not identify anything on yours.
Activate a scheme that is already registered
powercfg /setactive <GUID>
Replace <GUID> with the identifier from your own powercfg /list output. For example, if the list shows a scheme with a particular GUID and the name High performance, use that GUID rather than inventing one. After the command completes, reopen Power Options and check which plan is selected.

Inspect a scheme before changing it
powercfg /query <GUID>
/query displays the settings associated with the specified scheme. This is useful when a plan is present but behaves differently from what you expect, or when you want to record its configuration before making changes. If you omit the GUID, Windows can display information for the active scheme; specifying the GUID avoids ambiguity when several plans are registered.
Duplicate an existing scheme
powercfg /duplicatescheme <GUID>
Microsoft documents /duplicatescheme for creating a copy of an existing scheme. It is useful when you need a separate variant but should not overwrite the original. Duplication does not prove that a missing OEM-specific plan can be recreated, and it does not automatically give the copy the same name you remember from another computer.
Export a scheme before experimenting
powercfg /export <filename> <GUID>
Exporting saves a scheme to a file. Use a clear local filename and the GUID shown by your own machine. This is a prudent safeguard if you have tuned processor, sleep or display settings and want a way to import that configuration later.
Import a saved scheme
powercfg /import <filename>
Microsoft also documents /import for bringing a previously exported scheme into Windows. The imported scheme receives an identifier on the current installation, so run powercfg /list afterward and use the newly displayed GUID with /setactive if you want to select it.
For the complete syntax and additional options, use the Microsoft Learn powercfg command-line reference. Keep the command window open until each command reports its result; a typographical error in a GUID can target no scheme or the wrong scheme.

How to get High performance back
High performance appears in powercfg /list
This is the least invasive case. Copy the GUID on the High performance line, run powercfg /setactive <GUID>, and verify the selected plan in Control Panel. If Settings still says Balanced or shows a different label, remember that Settings Power mode and classic scheme names are separate presentations.
High performance is in the list but not visible in Control Panel
First expand Show additional plans. If the scheme is still absent from the graphical list, use its GUID with /setactive and then reopen the window. The command output is the more direct evidence that the scheme is registered.
High performance is not in the list
There is no documented command in the supplied Microsoft reference that guarantees creation of a missing manufacturer plan. You can duplicate a scheme that does exist with /duplicatescheme, but that creates a copy of its settings, not necessarily the original High performance plan or its OEM-specific behavior. Export any customized scheme before experimenting, and avoid copying a GUID found online.
Settings shows only Balanced
Check the classic Power Options list and then run powercfg /list. If another scheme is registered, activate it by GUID. If neither interface lists it, the device may simply expose a narrower set of plans. Hardware and manufacturer differences mean that a plan available on one Windows 11 model is not guaranteed on another.

Be cautious with the commonly suggested reset command
Many online guides recommend:
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
The Microsoft Learn command reference used for the documented steps here lists options such as /list, /query, /duplicatescheme, /setactive, /export and /import, but does not document -restoredefaultschemes. Its exact scope, effect on custom plans and suitability across Windows 11 devices therefore cannot be verified from that reference.

Do not describe this switch as an official, guaranteed or harmless repair. If you encounter it elsewhere and are considering it, preserve customized schemes with /export first, understand that online instructions may use syntax not covered by Microsoft’s current reference, and avoid running it merely because Settings displays Balanced. The documented list, query and activation commands provide a lower-risk way to establish what is actually present.
When System Restore is an appropriate escalation
System Restore is a broader rollback, not a targeted power-plan repair. Consider it only when the problem began after a recent driver, application or system change, the command and Control Panel checks did not resolve it, and a suitable restore point exists.
Microsoft says System Restore can revert system files and settings to an earlier restore point while leaving personal files unaffected. It also lets you scan for programs and drivers that would be affected before applying the point. Read the Microsoft System Restore guidance for the available recovery steps in your Windows edition.

- Confirm that the date of the point predates the disappearance or behavior change.
- Use the option to scan for affected programs when it is offered.
- Save open work and understand that applications, drivers and system settings installed after the point may be removed or rolled back.
- Do not describe the operation as a power-plan reset; it changes a wider set of Windows files and settings.
For future recovery, Microsoft’s System Protection documentation explains how protection works and how to create a restore point manually. A restore point created before a configuration change gives you a defined rollback option, but it does not make every OEM power scheme available.
Common symptoms and the safest next action
| Symptom | What it usually tells you | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Power mode is missing from Settings | You may be dealing with a device-specific interface or policy rather than a missing classic scheme. | Check Settings > System > Power & battery, then inspect classic Power Options and powercfg /list. |
| Only Balanced appears in Settings | Settings is not displaying every classic scheme, or the device exposes only that mode. | Look for named plans in Control Panel and use the registered GUID list before attempting any reset. |
| A custom plan prevents changing Power mode | Microsoft identifies the selected custom plan as a possible blocker. | Select Balanced in Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options, then try Power mode again. |
High performance appears in /list but is not active |
The scheme is registered and can be selected directly. | Run powercfg /setactive <GUID> with the GUID shown on your PC. |
No expected scheme appears in /list |
Windows has no registered copy of that scheme on this installation. | Export existing custom plans, consider duplicating an available scheme, and avoid claiming that an undocumented reset will restore the missing plan. |
| The issue started immediately after a system change | A broader rollback may be relevant if a suitable restore point exists. | Evaluate System Restore and scan for affected programs before applying a point. |
Final verification checklist
- Identify whether the missing control is Settings Power mode or a classic Control Panel scheme.
- Check Settings > System > Power & battery and record the choices actually offered.
- Check Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options, including Show additional plans.
- Run
powercfg /listand keep the GUID from your own output. - Use
powercfg /query <GUID>to inspect a plan andpowercfg /setactive <GUID>only when you have confirmed the target. - Use
/exportbefore changing a carefully customized scheme; use/importif you need to bring it back. - Escalate to System Restore only for a change-related problem with an appropriate restore point.
The practical answer to “How do I restore a missing power plan in Windows 11?” is therefore to identify the interface, inspect the schemes Windows actually registers, and activate an existing scheme by its own GUID. If the plan is not registered, Windows 11 and the hardware may simply expose a different set of choices; no single reset command is documented here as a guaranteed repair.
