To restore a Minecraft server safely, stop it completely, make a second copy of the current server directory, identify the backup’s actual world folder, and make that folder match level-name in server.properties. Replace the live world without deleting it, restore every required dimension and plugin or mod file from the same backup point, then start the server with the compatible software and version and test before reopening it to players.

The exact files differ between Java and Bedrock, and Paper 26.1 introduced a different world layout. Follow the branch that matches your edition, server software and backup format.

Identify your server before restoring anything

A backup is usable only when its files match the server you are repairing. Record these details first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Edition: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
  • Server software: Vanilla, Paper, Fabric, Forge or another platform.
  • Minecraft and server-software version: especially whether Paper is older than 26.1 or 26.1 and newer.
  • Backup format: a complete directory copy, a host-panel snapshot, an archive, or a single world file.
  • Configured world name: the value of level-name in server.properties.

Do not begin by copying level.dat alone. A world also contains region files, player data, advancements, statistics, data-pack information and dimension data. A partial copy can produce a new-looking world, missing inventories or inaccessible Nether and End worlds.

Make two safety copies

Stop the server cleanly

Use the server console’s normal stop command or the hosting panel’s stop control. Wait until the process has exited and the panel shows the server as stopped. Paper’s migration guidance explicitly says to stop a running Vanilla server and create a full backup; the same discipline prevents files from changing while you copy them.

Preserve the current state

Before replacing anything, copy the entire live server directory to a separate location. Give it a dated name such as server-before-restore-2026-10-13. Keep this copy separate from both the live directory and the incoming backup. If the restore is incomplete, you can put the original files back instead of trying to reconstruct them.

Protect the incoming backup

Work from a duplicate of the downloaded archive or snapshot. Never rename, extract over, or delete the only copy. If the backup is on a hosting panel, download it or create a second snapshot before starting.

Choose the right restore scope

Restore choice Use it when Files that must travel together Main risk
Full-server restore The server configuration, plugins, mods and world all need to return to one known point. The complete server directory, including configuration, libraries or launch files supplied by the host, world data and plugin or mod data. It can roll back permissions, allowlists and newer configuration changes that you wanted to keep.
World-only restore The world is damaged but you intentionally want to retain current server settings. The complete matching world set, including all dimensions and the player, advancement, statistic and data files used by that software. Current plugins, mods or datapacks may expect data from a different world state.
Hosting-panel snapshot Your provider exposes a restore button or snapshot browser. Whatever the snapshot says it contains; verify whether it covers only the world or the whole instance. A panel may restore to a new path or restart automatically, leaving an old directory active.
Java single-player ZIP You are restoring a client world, not a dedicated server. The extracted world folder and any server-side configuration you create for it. A single-player backup does not include a dedicated server’s plugins, launch settings or permissions.

When in doubt, use a complete same-point server backup. A world-only operation is safe only when you understand which non-world files your software requires.

Restore a Java server: the complete procedure

1. Inspect the backup without changing the live server

Extract the archive into a temporary location, or open the snapshot’s file browser. Find the directory that contains the world’s level.dat and region data. The directory may be named world, but it could have a custom name. If the archive contains an extra top-level folder, do not copy that wrapper as the world; copy the folder that actually contains the world files.

2. Read level-name

Open server.properties in the live server directory and read level-name. Paper’s reference defines this value as the name of the folder in which the world is saved. The restored folder name and this value must match exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.

You can resolve a mismatch in either direction: rename the incoming world folder to the configured name, or change level-name to the incoming folder’s name. Changing the property is useful when you want to keep a descriptive world name; renaming the folder is less disruptive when scripts and plugins already refer to the configured name. Do not do both inconsistently.

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

3. Quarantine the live world

In the stopped server directory, rename the existing configured world folder to a dated quarantine name instead of deleting it. For example, a live folder named world can become world-before-restore-2026-10-13. Keep it until players have confirmed the restore and you have completed a fresh backup.

4. Copy the complete matching world set

Copy the backup’s world folder into the server directory, preserving its internal structure, file permissions and timestamps where the operating system supports that. Do not merge an old and new world tree file by file unless you are deliberately recovering individual files; a merge can leave regions and metadata from different points in time.

For a full-server restore, copy the rest of the backed-up server files as well, while retaining a separate copy of any host-specific launch script or credentials that must not be overwritten. For a world-only restore, leave current configuration in place but restore the dimensions and world-related plugin or mod data that belong to the same backup point.

5. Start with compatible software

Use the same server software and Minecraft version that created the backup whenever possible. Start the server while watching the console. Confirm that it reports the expected level name and look for conversion notices, missing datapacks, incompatible plugins or mods, and file-permission errors. A conversion can be one-way, so do not let a newer version open your only untouched backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test privately before opening the server

Join with an administrator or test account while the server is still restricted. Check a known build, the spawn area, an existing player’s inventory and position, advancements and statistics, and any important containers. Travel through a Nether portal and an End portal, then check plugin or mod features such as claims, economies, maps or permissions. Only after these checks pass should you allow normal players to connect.

Paper storage layouts: pre-26.1 versus 26.1 and newer

Paper changed world storage in 26.1. A restore that worked on an older Paper server can place files in the wrong location on a current server, and a current layout should not be treated as an old one.

Modern Paper 26.1+ layout

Paper’s 26.1 announcement describes a layout with level.dat at the world root, player advancements, data and statistics under world/players, and overworld, Nether and End data under world/dimensions/minecraft/. The exact world name replaces world when level-name uses a custom value.

Data Where it belongs in the modern layout
World metadata At the configured world folder root, including level.dat.
Player advancements, data and statistics The world folder’s players directory.
Overworld The overworld directory below dimensions/minecraft.
Nether and End The corresponding dimension directories below dimensions/minecraft.

Restore this structure as a unit. Copying only the root or only the overworld can make the server appear to load while silently losing dimension or player state.

Older Paper layout

Before 26.1, Paper commonly stored the Nether and End in sibling directories such as world_nether and world_the_end. Paper’s current migration documentation labels those instructions as pre-26.1. Identify the version that produced the backup before deciding which directories to copy.

Paper-to-Vanilla migration detail

Paper documents a manual move when switching a 26.1 world to Vanilla. For a world named world, move these files from world/dimensions/minecraft/overworld/data/minecraft/ into world/data/minecraft/:

  • game_rules.dat
  • scheduled_events.dat
  • wandering_trader.dat
  • weather.dat
  • world_gen_settings.dat

That is a migration operation, not a normal backup restore. Do not apply it to a same-software Paper restore, and do not assume an older Paper backup has these directories.

Vanilla, Fabric and Forge: what changes

Server type Safe default What to verify before starting
Vanilla Java Restore the complete configured world folder and use the same Minecraft version. level-name, datapacks, dimensions and any server properties that players depend on.
Paper or another plugin server Restore the software-specific world layout plus plugin configuration and plugin data from the same point. Paper generation, dimension directories, plugin compatibility and any migration instructions.
Fabric Use the same loader, game version and mod set, then restore the full world and mod-managed data. Whether a mod stores data outside the world folder and whether a loader update requires migration.
Forge Use the same Forge version and modpack, restoring the complete world and configuration set. Mod-generated dimensions, configuration files and registry changes that must match the backup.

Fabric and Forge can place important data in mod-specific directories. A world-only copy that omits those files may load with missing blocks, entities or gameplay systems even when level.dat is present.

Restoring from a hosting panel

  1. Stop the instance using the panel, and wait for the status to show that the process has exited.
  2. Read the snapshot description. Confirm whether it covers the entire server directory, only a world, or only selected files.
  3. Create a new snapshot or download the current files before selecting Restore.
  4. If the panel offers a destination, restore to a new directory first. Compare its world name and version with the active installation.
  5. Check server.properties and the startup profile so the panel launches the restored directory, not the old one.
  6. Start privately, inspect the console and complete the in-game verification checklist before making the instance public.

Panel labels differ by provider, so an apparent successful restore is not proof that the active startup profile changed. Confirm the path and level name in the running console.

If you would rather not manage backups by hand, Godlike.Host’s Minecraft Java server hosting takes up to three free backups a day and lets you restore them from its Pterodactyl-based game panel, with SFTP access when you want to inspect the files yourself.

Restoring a Bedrock server world

Bedrock restoration is not a Java directory swap. Minecraft’s official Bedrock help describes a manual restore as moving the backup file to the current world’s file location for the relevant platform. The location and file-management steps therefore depend on whether the world is on Windows, a mobile device, a console or a dedicated Bedrock host.

  1. Stop the Bedrock server or close the world and make a separate copy of the current world file.
  2. Identify the backup file and confirm that it belongs to the same Bedrock world and edition.
  3. Use the platform’s documented world-file location and replace or import the current world according to that platform’s procedure.
  4. Keep the old file under a dated name until the restored world has loaded successfully.
  5. Open the world privately and verify recent builds, player inventories, spawn, entities and any behavior packs or add-ons.

Realm backups follow a separate restore article and workflow. Do not use a local Bedrock file procedure for a Realm, and do not expect a Java world folder to open as a Bedrock world without a separate conversion process.

What to do when the server loads a new world

The folder name does not match

Recheck level-name, including capitalization. If it says survival but the restored directory is named world, the server may generate a new survival folder. Stop the server, quarantine that newly generated folder, and correct the name before restarting.

The backup was copied one directory too deep

Open the path the server is using and look for level.dat. If the real world is at server/world-backup/world/level.dat while the server expects server/world/level.dat, move the inner world folder into the configured location.

The wrong installation is running

Check the startup profile, working directory and panel-selected instance. A correct restore in an unused directory has no effect on a process launched from another directory.

Missing Nether, End or player data

  • Modern Paper: verify the complete dimensions/minecraft tree and the world’s players directory.
  • Older Paper: look for the matching sibling directories, commonly world_nether and world_the_end.
  • World-only restore: restore plugin or mod data that tracks portals, claims, inventories or custom dimensions.
  • Version change: stop and return to the untouched backup if the server performed an unexpected conversion; investigate the documented migration path first.

Do not create fresh dimensions and copy random region files into them as a first fix. That can mix terrain generated under different seeds, versions or generator settings.

Other common restore failures

Plugins or mods fail during startup

Return to the software and mod or plugin versions used to create the backup. Read the first error in the console, not just the final shutdown message. If a plugin stores data outside the world, restore its configuration and data directory from the same point or remove the plugin only after confirming what data it owns.

Datapacks are missing or rejected

Check the world’s datapack directory and the console’s validation message. A newer or older game version can reject a datapack even when the world itself is intact. Use the compatible server version or restore the datapack set that accompanied the backup.

Files cannot be read or written

Check ownership and permissions on the copied directory. The account that launches the server must be able to read the world and write region, player and log files. Correct permissions while the server is stopped, then retry with a fresh copy rather than continuing with a partially written restore.

The world opens but recent work is absent

Confirm the backup timestamp and time zone, then inspect whether the host captured a complete snapshot or only selected files. A successful boot proves only that the files are structurally readable; it does not prove that the snapshot contains the desired point in time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Java single-player backup archives

For a Java client world, Minecraft’s official single-player help says a backup appears as a dated .zip file. In the Edit World screen, use Open Backups Folder to locate it. Extract the archive and use the contained world folder when importing or creating a dedicated server world. This workflow does not include the server plugins, mods, permissions or launch configuration of a dedicated instance.

Version changes and migration decisions

A same-version restore is the least risky path. If you must change Minecraft versions, change one variable at a time: first restore and validate with the original software and version, then make a new backup, then perform the documented upgrade. Keep the untouched original archive so you can return to it.

Switching between Vanilla and Paper is also a migration, not merely a file copy. Paper 26.1’s storage change makes the exact source and destination versions especially important. Follow the relevant migration instructions and make the manual data moves only when the destination software requires them.

Verification checklist before reopening the server

  • The console shows the intended level name and no unresolved conversion or permission error.
  • The restored seed, spawn and several known builds are present.
  • A test account has the expected inventory, location, advancements and statistics.
  • Overworld, Nether and End portals lead to the expected terrain.
  • Important containers, villagers, entities, maps and redstone systems behave normally.
  • Plugins, mods, datapacks, claims, permissions and scheduled systems load without errors.
  • The server writes a new save or log entry after the test, proving that the active process can write to the restored directory.
  • A fresh backup is created from the verified state before normal players return.

Prevent the next emergency

Keep at least one copy that is not on the same disk as the server. An external drive is suitable when its capacity exceeds the complete server directory and its interface works with the host hardware. Date each backup, record the Minecraft and server-software versions, and note whether it is a full-server or world-only snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a rotation that retains several restore points rather than overwriting one archive. Periodically perform a test restore into a separate directory. A backup that has never been opened is only an assumption; a test confirms that the archive is complete, readable and compatible with the software you intend to run.
