You can often restore a Mac even when its built-in Recovery tools are unavailable: use Internet Recovery on an Intel Mac, or start macOS Recovery from startup options on an Apple silicon Mac. First identify which kind of Mac you have, then try a reinstall before considering an erase. A reinstall normally keeps apps and personal data; erasing deletes information.
Identify your Mac before choosing a recovery method
Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs use different steps to enter macOS Recovery. On Intel models, the startup-key combination also affects which macOS version the installer may offer. If your Mac still starts normally, back it up before troubleshooting.

If you are unsure which processor your Mac uses and it can start, check the Apple menu’s About This Mac screen. Apple silicon models identify a chip; Intel models identify a processor.

Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Select Options, then select Continue.
- If prompted, choose a volume and authenticate with a known user password.
Intel
Restart and immediately hold the shortcut that matches the version you want to try:

- Command-R: Reinstalls the current macOS or the most recently installed version.
- Option-Command-R: Uses Internet Recovery and may offer the latest macOS compatible with the Mac.
- Shift-Option-Command-R: Uses Internet Recovery and may offer the macOS version that came with the Mac, or the closest version still available.
If an Intel Mac cannot start from built-in Recovery, it may show a spinning globe while attempting Internet Recovery. You can also try either Internet Recovery shortcut directly.
Reinstall macOS without erasing your files
In Recovery, choose Reinstall macOS and follow the onscreen instructions. Apple says reinstalling macOS does not remove apps or personal data, but recommends backing up first. If the installer shows both Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD – Data, select Macintosh HD.

- Do not close the lid, force a shutdown, or interrupt the process while progress bars or blank screens appear.
- Do not choose an erase option unless you have a backup or accept losing the information on the disk.
If the installer cannot see the startup disk, open Disk Utility from Recovery and inspect the disk before deciding what to do next.
When Internet Recovery cannot connect
Recovery installation needs broadband over Wi-Fi or Ethernet using DHCP. Captive login pages, 802.1X networks, and some PPPoE configurations may prevent installation. A hotel, school, workplace, or public network is not guaranteed to work.

- Check that the Mac is connected to the internet and retry.
- Try Ethernet or a different Wi-Fi network, if available.
- On an Intel Mac, try the appropriate Internet Recovery key combination.
- If the globe displays a warning or a network error appears, retry later in case the issue is temporary.
Use a bootable installer only when it helps
Apple Support says, “You don’t need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS.” A USB installer is an optional fallback when ordinary installation methods fail, or when installing macOS on multiple Macs. It is not a routine requirement.
Creating one requires a compatible full macOS installer and a USB flash drive or other secondary volume; the creation process erases that volume. Apple’s instructions do not specify a universal capacity requirement, so check the requirements for the macOS installer you intend to use. The Mac also needs internet access to obtain firmware and other information specific to its model.

- Other Macs: Hold Option during startup and choose the installer.
- T2-equipped Intel Macs: External boot may need to be allowed in Startup Security Utility.
Check the startup disk before erasing
A flashing question-mark folder means the Mac cannot find a usable startup disk or macOS. Start in Recovery and use Disk Utility to check and repair the startup disk. If Disk Utility cannot repair errors, erasing and reinstalling may be an option only if you understand that erasing deletes information and your backup situation is clear.
Apple’s cited erase procedure for an Intel Mac without a T2 chip does not apply to Apple silicon or Intel Macs with a T2 chip; those models have separate erase guidance. If Disk Utility cannot see the disk or erase fails, Apple says the Mac may need service.
